As my husband was dying he played this song every day....a smile is good medicine...now he gone for 3 years I play this in his honor......still grieving here...but this song helps bring a smile...to remind me of all the joys......
The Brilliance of Harry Nilsson, most underrated singer/songwriter. The Beatles favorite American singer. Partied together often. Paul said when you went out to party with Harry you never came home for at least 3 days.
I love this song. My Daddy used to sing this song when I was a little girl. I buried him on December 12, 2020. I will always have happy thoughts when I hear this song and sing tears of joy because I really love and will miss my Daddy.
Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of your dad . I would probably be similar age and I played it to my son he’s almost 50 an so affected by the the music I brought him up with , god bless.
This song used to make people feel like monkeying around. My 8 year old brother once sang this song over and over again on a 400 mile car trip in 1971 when we were all little kids. He went overboard on it. 5 kids, 1 adult , 400 miles and no end to "Put the lime in the coconut and call me in the morning. DOCTOR! Is there nothing I can take? I said DOCTOR!" RIP, Mark. I miss you!
My dad took us on a trip to Oklahoma from California and that's the first time we heard this song back in 1971. The same as you, there was five of us and one adult all I can say is my dad sure had a lot of guts. It was one of the best trips we ever took . 😂😂😂❤
Love this song good memories. My brother and couple of his were hanging at or home . Coconut played on the radio and they got up and started dancing the nutty nutty Coconut. IT was so funny. Zee
Harry Nillson is one of my favorite song writers of all time. We danced to this record as kids on my dad's stereo. Should be in the song writers hall of fame. I love Harry Nillson.
Nilsson (as it's spelled) is one of Sweden's most common family names (his parents were poor, Swedish immigrants and "aerial ballet artists"...Nilsson = "Nils' son. /J, Sweden
A testament to Harry's sweet, velvet voice - Over a million hits Harry! Even after all these years your still bringin' it home! JEEEZE We sure miss you and your music!
Harry Nilsson was a genius and deserves a better legacy. one of the greatest songwriters in history. a reporter asked Paul McCartney in 1966," who's your favorite American singer?" he replied," Harry Nilsson". the same reporter asked John Lennon," who's your favorite American band"? and John replied," Harry Nilsson".
"Coconut" is a song written and first recorded by Harry Nilsson. The third single from his 1971 album, Nilsson Schmilsson, it reached #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and it features three distinct characters (the narrator, the sister, and the doctor), all sung in different voices by Nilsson. The song is perhaps best remembered for its chorus lyric, "She put the lime in the coconut, she drank 'em both up." There are no chord changes; the only chord in the song is an arpeggiated C-7th." Wiki :)
I used to play this song all the time when it first came out. I actually put some lime in the coconut one day and it had a nice taste but later added some Vodka to it. Made a big difference! The icing on the cake was drinking that tasty drink while listening to Nilsson Schmilsson!! A good time indeed.
I did exactly that around 2004 or 2005 (I put the lime in the coconut while listening to this song high AF, and drank them both up). Surprisingly, it was disgusting. Incidentally, the coconut was probably rancid. 🤷🏻♂️😂
I can’t stop crying while listening this song... RIP our dear Nigel Murray and Lance Sweets. Bones is serial that can make this song sad and you’ll never think it’s funny
Harry Nilsson did all the voices on that track. A truly strange and gifted person who played now and then at Troubadour open mic nights with anyone who wandered in. Even me. Cool dude.
This song brings me back so far. I remember being a little kid and sitting by my uncle as he played his guitar and sang this song. He had an extremely deep voice and he poured his soul into howling certain portions of the song. There was so much emotion behind every time he would play this song. Hearing this brings back such great memories. :D
Such a wonderful gifted talented musician and vocalist - left us too soon So sad!! He WAS a genius and his music lives on - as good now as it was then. Thank you Harry :)
It's too bad they don't make novelty tunes like this anymore. I loved hearing this on the radio back in The 70's, and i still laugh when I hear it today.
Oh! So that's what The Nairobi Trio is doing these days. (Sorry, couldn't resist. Long-time fan of both geniuses, Ernie Kovacs and Harry Nilsson.) Nice cover, and video! Thanx so much for sharing!
I just turned 21 about the time this song came out...I spent a lot of time in bars drinking not lime and coconut...but THIS song was a VERY popular song on the jukebox in the bars, played all the time...along with Brandy (the song). I can remember every single bar I heard this in though I was drunk out of my mind... lol
I was taught this song when I was little by my parents. It made me laugh at elementary school and i was proud to know it. Now I smile when it comes to my mind often into adulthood. Sometimes it turns on at work on my Spotify and I sing along without turning it off. Such a goofy fun song as kid , i enjoy singing it now and for years to come . It always is a nice surprise when i run into it again.
I only just now realized who wrote and performed this song. Better late than never I guess. Why I never discovered Harry Nilsson until now is a real mystery. Always good to have a "new" artist to discover.
I haven't heard this song forever! Although l catch myself singing it from time to time. One time my cousin played it on his stereo and fell asleep. That blasted song played all afternoon!
I used to play this song over and over when I was a kid. Haven't herd it for nearly 40 years but still know all the words WOW still cool after all those years
Balls Tanuki hahaha😂😂😂😂😂that was hilarious,I think this was the 70s LSD stage or too much wacky weed when they wrote this. The video probably both & huge $$$$ shortage lol 😂😂😂 made my day. 😂🤙😂🤙🤙🤙
Bones brought me here. To be honest I basically cried when Lance sweets and Vincent Murray died. I'm not even gonna lie, I'm starting to get into this song❤️😂

Rip your daddy

400 miles of that sounds like the fast lane to insanity xD

Between the flouride and septic water. What can you do?
This is hysterical. Also very catchy. And for us older guys - Ernie Kovacs fans..how great to see the 'Nairobi trio" working again!!!
Little High at the Time
omg Ernie Kovacs is a dark horse these days. I thank PBS for introducing me to his genius in the 1970's.
I was ten when this hit the radio. Didn't know what to make of it, but liked it. Here, almost fifty years later, I'm listening to it again.

I love that memory. Love, love him.
Absolutely
"You can't write a hit song with only 1 chord."
Harry Nilsson: "Hold my coconut."
😂
@@windsordawn whats so funny
There is a G cord, C minot and A
@@davidweiss9891 There are no chord changes in the song: an arpeggiated C7th accompanies the song.
I wonder what key this is in
This guy is a flippin’ musical genius.

I have been listening to Harry Nilsson radio on Pandora, awesome
Bill Grubb forgot bout that
Then Harry Nilsson pulled John Lennon off when he was choking his girlfriend to death.
@@ross311 Yeah I know, it was usually Paul pulling him off.
This never fails to lift my mood.
Thumbs up those that remember being a pre teen and tuning in to the AM radio when this song was on the top 40 list.
🙋♀️🎵🎶
Yep. Pretty sure there’s a NSFK subtext going on but at the time, we didn’t care. Take that, Tipper Gore.
Never thought I'd shed tears of happiness & joy to this song. Oh, Bones. I love you.
Real genius, talent & a crazy sense of musical style. Thanks Nilsson.

Thanks so much for the info, much appreciated 👍
it is insane that harry nilsson actually wrote this song. seems like the kind of song that has existed forever and has no author. like a folk song
I used to play this song all the time when it first came out. I actually put some lime in the coconut one day and it had a nice taste but later added some Vodka to it. Made a big difference! Lime and coconut will cock THC!
Supposed to use rum :)
Sounds like a plan

To me the genius of it is, the whole song is played using just one chord (C7). Yet 40 years on it's still being enjoyed.
Yup you can call Harry a one chord wonder.
Make that 50!
52-years now! Hello, I'm from 12-years the future.
Ingenious!! I’m 79 years old woman and this is mind blowing, like Dadaism love you ❤❤❤❤

I want to hear about the strange.
I've heard that giftedness only lasts for so long, but with Harry Nilsson it took him all the way..in a good way

Beautiful display of his voice in that.
Without you and Jump into the Fire wow

Ernie Kovaks skit from his TV show. Pure genius!

Harry Nilsson was one of the greatest and voices of all time. John Lennon even had his record deal renewed for biggest amount tip this date.

Nor me. Its well documented that the Beatles were big fans.
do not know just HOWmany times id hafto hear this great, - in consecutive order- before i tire of it!!!!👍👍🤩
One of the most dynamic novelty hits of The 70's. Probably the most funnest tune Nilsson ever recorded. They don't make them like this anymore. Very sad.
They do make them like that

The "Nairobi Trio" Ernie Kovacs, creator supreme!
My crazy beloved brother Steven (RIP) had the 45 of this song. I miss both!
