    hi, you can set up groups in third party home kit apps, for example in your home bar lights could be set up as a group, or whole rooms, its pretty cool,

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Theo Murray hey theo, thanks man. yep, i guess i just meant you can't control those groups of lights from siri (actually you might be able to if the app itself is homekit enabled). but i definitely do have group of lights setup for my rooms with other apps and with widgets.

    • @TheoMurray
      @TheoMurray 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +techfreshness yeah siri works too! along with event triggers, haven't quite figured out remote access for siri yet

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      well awesome man, so you are using a homekit enabled app to do this? for remote access you just have to have your phone plugged in. anyways, to me siri is a bit fickle, the 1 out of 4 times she doesn't understand what i'm saying is a deal breaker, ha.

      +techfreshness yeah, try the elgato eve app, you lights, room and group setting can edit there,

    like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

    Thanks for the detailed review. Think I'll stick with the older bulbs as they will no doubt be lowering the price to clear them out. Lightstrip plus is def the option to go for though!

      +Beiderbeck I got the base kit. With three it was decently lit. I got the light strip and put it under my bed and that helped a lot because it is very bright. Later on I got two accent lights to put in corners and behind my monitor and it is perfect. All in all my bedroom has 3 a19 bulbs, 2 x par16 bulbs and the new lightstrip 2.0 for best lighting

    When the new lightbulbs er turned off in the app, do they make a high pitch noice, like the first gen bulbs do ?

    • @techfreshness

      +Brian Reedtz Battrup i have not experienced that with either gen actually

    • @BrianSPC
      @BrianSPC 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I have 10 bulbs and they all make the sound when off, soo when I go to sleep, I have do turn the ones in the bedroom off at the switch. Maybe its because I live i Europe where they run on 230v, maybe its not a problem on 110v.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      dang thats kind of a bummer. you could try a dimmer maybe? mine make a slight buzz on the dimmer unless they are set right at the perfect level of the dimmer switch, then it goes away. so i just set it on that level and forget it.

    This was helpful to me before I bought and when I installed the starter kit. Thank you for that. My question is, does the starter kit with the 3 bulbs connect to the lightstrip or I have to buy another starter kit just for the lightstrip?

    • @xtianocubano
      @xtianocubano 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you need only one hub (it came in the starter kit) and them you can add as many bulb or strips as you want ( up to 50)

    The Lightstrips are cuttable, right? What happens when you cut the Lightstrip Plus? Are both ends usable, or do you loose 1 of the 2? Nice review buy the way.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kingsley Justine thanks kingley. yes they are cuttable, and yes you lose whatever you end up cutting off, so very expensive proposition!

      +techfreshness Hi, remember that question I asked you? I made some research, bought a starting kit and 2 lightstrips. Bought 2 of them cause I wanted to have 2, in the case I wreck one. I wanted to run an experiment.
      In your video I noticed that you can actually see the number of connectors. I also noticed that the old strip version has less (4).
      I was able to buy the needed connectors/adapters. Some wires, electronic soldering equipment and I was actually able to reuse the left over piece.
      It works fine. It's worth the pain even if I paid them half price.
      Just wanted you to know. If you need more details feel free to contact me.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh nice, i do remember yes. ha nice work with the soldering, my bad i thought you just meant are they resuable easily after cutting (as they are), with no extra work.glad they are workign out for you though!

    • @kingsleyjustine8904
      @kingsleyjustine8904 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed it's not possible to reuse as is. But I was curious to see if there was a way to accomplish that. As you said with little work however.

    Hey, i saw that you have the BR30 can/recess lights. Do yours get to a true green color? I love setting my light strips to like a teal color but i noticed with the BR30 bulb it goes from blue to yellow and not really a green in the middle.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scullie Smith hey sculie, not it does not, the led strips are different in some way (i remember some commenter explaining why). so unfortunately its not an issue with your bulb, its just the way it is

    Quick question, I see you have LED bulbs installed in recessed/enclosed ceiling fixtures. I thought LED wouldn't work well in enclosed setting? which model did you use for that?

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey charlie, hmm i'm not sure why that would be the case, i have never heard that. those are the br30 bulbs

    • @CharlieShay
      @CharlieShay 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember reading that it's got something to do with heat dissipation. But I just looked, seems like BR30 was designed for recessed sockets, but I'm guessing it's not enclosed (with a lid covering the bulb)?

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats correct, although i wouldn't imagine even in a truly enclosed space it would be a problem, these things don't get that hot

    Whats the difference between the br 30 and the a 19 hue lights?

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MIAtown09 basically the shape of the bulb, one is more like a flood light, and the br30 also is 630 lumens, but you can't tell

    • @MIAtown09
      @MIAtown09 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +techfreshness So there's not a better one to get? I was looking at buying the br 30 today for black friday

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey miatown, if you just want bulbs for a regular socket, then just get the a19, they are more your 'standard' type bulb, more versatile to use in different lamps and what not. that make sense? also, if you would like to support the channel please don't forget to use my amazon link ;p

    Is it a smart idea to buy just the bridge off eBay
    Because I only want one Bulb for my room and I don't want to drop 200$ for 3 or does the hue lighting system only work if you buy the bridge in the starting pack

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +spacejam327 hey spacejam (good movie, ha). you can buy the bridge no problem. any hue bulb can be controlled by any bridge. you only have one light bulb in your whole room? is it because you want different colors or you just want to control your light from your phone?

    • @spacejam327
      @spacejam327 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @techfreshness

    hello there... I know for a fact that the first generation 110V-rated hue bulbs work on 220V just fine (I have 6 of those working for 2 years now). Do you have any idea if these new 2.0 "american" bulbs (rated 100-130V) will work on a 220V supply too?.

    My v1 bulbs and bridge glitch (eg turn off and on again to white) and lag (don't respond or take a whole to respond) sometimes. Does the v2 fix these bugs? Or is this something only I experience? :P

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lawrence Job hmm, i would imagine v2 is better, but unfort i can't say due to not experiencing those things you mention myself. you mean they just randomly turn off and on? if you turn them off by a switch (when they are on a color) they are designed to do that as they dont' retain the color. as far as the lag, i definitely get some of that sometimes, especially with multiple bulbs on the system, i did notice a slight improvement with the lag on v2, but overall the lag wasn't anything that quite ever bothered me.

    • @lawrencejob
      @lawrencejob 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, thanks for your response! Great videos by the way.
      Some of my lights (especially when dim or showing a saturated blue or red) just flicker briefly, go to black, then fade back on to their default white light. It does seem like someone flicked the switch on/off, actually (although I'd know about that, haha).

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rounak dutta that kinda depends on how the bulbs are (like 4 recessed lights or are they all in lamps, etc), if all overhead i would say yes. it also depends how much light you like, but even if spread out between 4 lamps i do think its enough. they are eseentially 60 watt equivalents tho, so if you are not ok with 4 60 watt bulbs then no.

    Great Review!... I'm a little confused about a couple of things... Can anyone clear this up for me? I have the 1st version starter kit with the round bridge. I think I bought it last October... I then added another bulb... I wanted to but another starter kit just to get 3 more bulbs (and i would have a spare bridge) I heard somewhere that I couldn't do that because the bulbs are associated to the bridge they come with. Does anyone know if that's true? Also, can i buy 2.0 bulbs and hang them off of my current 1.0 bridge? Thanks!!!

    could you please tell me, is there going to be a android version of the bridge, for voice commands,
    The new light strip plus is a big improvement, it's very sad pillips did not improve the colours of the new bulbs ,the colour Blue was always very disappointing .. very good video keep up the good work ....

      +Paul Shakeshaft thanks a lot paul. unfortunately, i don't know about android though. there are some specific apps that allow voice control using, such as hue control, and there are some other ways to do it tooi with hacking some stuff together using ifttt, but as for just native voice support with android, i haven not heard of any.

    Hey +techfreshness thanks for the review. I also bought the new gen and cant tell a big difference on the A19 Gen1 and A19 Gen2. I also bought the new BR 30 and again they are the same. The new BR 30 are still the same Lumens at 630. I called Philips hue support and they confirmed that the A19 bulb went from 600 Lumens to 800 Lumens and the BR 30 stayed at 630 lumens. Strange.
    They also said they did not upgrade the color spectrum so we cannot achieve the color green accurately. Sad.
    Anyway, I did get the new light strips and they are awesome. I use them for under cabinet lights so the new Soft white and day light white enhancements are helpful.
    By the way I love your bar stools at your kitchen countertop. I am looking to purchase a few. What brand are yours and how do you like them? Are they sturdy? hold heavier people? Scratch the floor? Your opinions and feedback are highly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GoldDustRules hey golddust, thanks for the comments. yeah i really do wish there was a bigger difference, ah well maybe gen 3, ha. but yeh the new light strips having that functional white range is a very useful and welcome upgrade.
      regarding the bar stools, i honestly wouldn't recommend them. they look cool and are sturdy, which is why i bought them as they match the cabinets. they dont' scratch the floor as i put some soft feet on them, but they are really heavy, which makes using them a bit of a pain. since with bar stools you tend to want to adjust and move them around in my experience (and there is no easy way to grab them). but i believe i got them from overstock. but yeah, do not recommend, ha.

    I have a mixture of twenty six 1st Gen Hue Bulbs and a pair of 1st Gen Light Strips. I'm not sold on the 2nd Gen products. But I do like the Siri integration, so I may upgrade to a 2nd Gen Bridge.

  • @willderousse

    +30% increase in light is probably real but the human eye response is not linear so you'd probably not perceive it as 30% brighter. You shouldn't make judgments like that without measuring light output with a light meter.
    It's mostly specsmanship since it was a bit of a stretch to call a 600lm bulb a 60W incandescent equivalent.
    It's a bummer they did not improve the dimming, as I find 5% much too bright in some circumstances or correct the green gap.

    • @robertocampos6867
      @robertocampos6867 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Will DeRousse considering that the people seeing this review are using human eyes vs a light spectrometer to measure the actual light output...I welcomed his honest review of the lights. I didn't notice any difference in my new A19's vs the old...except on the white spectrum...other than that...not much to talk about. (dimming was a little better too)

    Nice review! I just noticed Philips upgraded the Lightstrip to Plus. I am wondering though, in your setup of the lightstrips behind your bed, is it possible to read something when laying in bed? I am thinking of using them as reading light since they can produce white light, but I'm not sure if its comfortable.

    Thanks for the videos-very helpful? I am building a new house and will have 10 recessed cans in my office/photography studio. I'm trying to decide between purchasing the new style A19 (just released), the BR30 or the PAR16. I can buy any bulbs and will decide on the housing next. I feel like the PAR16 will look the best. I feel like the BR30 has the look of the older style recessed lights and the PAR30 has a nicer/stylish glass look. But not sure about the A19 and if these will look good in recessed cans. Also, are the PAR16 bulbs the "older/original" style and will likely be replaced with new style soon? Anyone have any input on this? TYIA!!

  • @richard1113

    I too found the new A19 bulbs a bit of a disappointment. I'm not a lighting expert so I guess my understanding of lumens is not that great. I presumed it was similar to watts. Anyone can clearly see the difference between a 75 and 100 watt bulb but apparently there's little difference between 600 and 800 lumens. Glad to see the light strips have more visible improvement. I'm not sure what to do at the moment. I have the new kit but since there's no real difference in the bulbs I may return it. On the other hand I have new bulbs that I could use in the future and I'm getting the new bridge for $20 in kit form. The other option is getting it from Philips next month for $40. Also, not sure if Siri is really useful here as I can start a scene by tapping an icon on my phone just as easily.

    Great video dude! Thanks for sharing. I saw this product at best buy while shopping for something totally diff so I googled when I got home, happened upon your vid. Had no idea it could do so much, especially with siri. Thumbs up man, good job.
    One note for improvement, the variety of video/angles/comparisons was stellar but constant appealing audio tone is subconsciously preferred by the viewer. You know what I mean. Buy one of those furry mic things. 8)
