    LSV just found out multitasking

  • @bigwig8657
    @bigwig8657 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Skyway sniper is a 1 drop in gw which means in takes counters amazingly, and in stalled games just shoots down x/2 or even x/3's as a mana sink. It's fairly easy to get it to 2/3 and able to shoot twice meaning a 4/4 flier dies to it straight up. But it's more a gw or gb(to trigger dying) 1 drop. And there are a ton of x/1 x/2 and x/3 fliers that it can kill or trade with fairly easily. And fliers will have to use removal on it as a 1 drop, pairs great with the 2 drop spider to double block any flier in the format generally with 1 living. Minimum a sideboard combo for fliers, him on 1, spider on 2, 1/4 spider on 3 just beats both aggro and fliers.
    And there are like 5 or 6 common and 5 uncommon ways to add counters to any creature and another 5 or so at rare. It into signpost into cat and you have a 3/4 that pings fliers on 3 or feat, and then either another 2 drop and solidarity is a common with 1 or 2 uncommons with multiple peices each turn.

    I am extremely down on new Magic sets these days, so for the first time in years I haven't looked at any of the spoilers.
    Of course, I'd still never miss these set reviews. Love the content, thank you loads for keeping me interested in looking at new sets!
    Short update: I'm three drafts in, trophied twice and the format seems really fun so far (I might be biased because winning is fun). The rares are cool, but few of them are instantly game ending, the planeswalkers are fun to play with and against (unlike many in the previous sets), and the archetypes are quite diverse. I'm a bit worried aggro might be too strong, but you can definitely do some 4c shrine nonsense as well, so it feels fairly well balanced.

    1:12:20 i kinda wish they gave me some guidance on how highly i should be rating the "bounce a spell on the stack" part of Unsubstantiate. it's such an unusual effect taht i'm not sure how useful (or useless!) it is?

    • @lovelylemonfactory
      @lovelylemonfactory 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's basically useless. If you are doing it to a creature it's almost always the exact same as just bouncing it. If you are bouncing a removal spell they still have their removal spell, so they will either just recast it that turn or the next.
      It's good when you are ahead but pretty bad when you are behind. If you want an unsummon its worth it but I wouldn't put too much stock on the bounce a spell part It never did much the last time it was printed.

    • @teagancombest6049
      @teagancombest6049 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remand this is not. Remand was great because it slowed your opponent down at no card cost to you, Unsubstantiate puts you down a card so it's a worse unsummon and a worse remand. But it's a common so I would still play it in any deck that got value out of casting instants/ sorceries. I'm not unhappy if I bounce my opponents turn 2 play, especially if I can get something down on the board first, and then get some later value out of with the UR uncommon Weird token maker. I would say it fits into a UR aggro-control tempo style deck which is where bounce and tap spells usually shine. Also this gets better if you have hard counters, because you can either use this to buy you a turn to get Cancel mana up, or bounce soemthing that slipped through your counter wall to get a second shot at countering it. But you really need to get some ulterior value out of it for it to not just be card disadvantage.

    • @qazzaqstan
      @qazzaqstan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The last time it was in limited I felt the bounce a spell part over performed when I wanted it but was definitely not the main mode (something like 0-1 times per draft assuming 3 matches). It is mostly a 2 mana unsummon which tends to be reasonable in decks that want the effect and then once in a while things line up where the other mode just works.

    I like Furor a bit more tbh. If you want to block with the creature, you simply play it post-combat and enjoy a beefy blocker, ready to attack next turn after you play another thing to block with, and it's only 1/1 less than Impending Doom for 2 less, while also lacking the burn downside. The rate at which you let a creature gains stats is worth it for the most aggressive of strategies.

    Really enjoyed watching the review. After playing about a dozen limited events i'd say my two biggest points of contention with the review retrospectively is 1) Removal is generally underrated in this review. I've found that while creatures like that gold uncommons rated at b+ are good, i'd almost always want grasp of darkness or dragonfire which should have been in the A's. Also i'd argue the 5 mana removal spells (exit the scene and finishing blow) are severely underrated. Some of the planeswalkers and rare creatures demand immediate response or you just lose, and white/black doesnt have many ways to deal with them outside of uncommons/rares. 2) Teferi's Tutelage is completely busted at uncommon, it should honesly be rare. It's even better than LSV predicted here.

    • @lukep692
      @lukep692 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very infrequently. You’re gonna be battling for enough playables quite often and that doesn’t mesh well with picking up tons of duals. Based on all the test drafts I’ve fired, 5 color shrines (or just 5 color at all) is a very rare beast indeed.

    • @labineboy2876
      @labineboy2876 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      3 color is pretty good
      Jund is great for aristocrats because rakdos and golgari compliment each other really well
      Grixis has good control
      Naya is pretty strong for midrange because +1/+1 counters can make things get to 4 power easier
      Bant pumping your flyers is never bad
      Esper is meh because you can play a grindy game with the Lifelink draining you opponents but you aren’t getting much to reanimate and you are only picking counters

    Interesting thing about combat tricks. They rated Sure Strike as a C- and Titanic Growth as a D. No explanation on the reasoning. Both are 2 CMC combat tricks, T Growth being the better one in almost every way; it does more damage and has way more defensive potential like saving a creature from a burn spell or grasp of darkness. Im guessing they gave Sure Strike the better rating because aggressive red decks will want a cheap combat trick more than midrangey green decks, even if the trick is inferior, although T Growth is the better card in a Red/Green deck where you can choose between the two. Good example of card evaluation in a vacuum not equating to how the cards will play in actual decks.

    • @MaimedFern
      @MaimedFern 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I just thought the way you talked about b/g like it wasn't a real archetype was kind of weird (when you talked about the signpost ucs in the beginning). It seems like there are enough payoffs and little things going on to make it real. You also kind of hinted at the fact that a lot of creatures die anyway in a usual draft match.
    I guess in b/g morbid and w/g +1-counters, the Fierce Empath goes up a little bit.

    Almost 4 hour video taping warrants short break in betweens. Hard to fault LSV for itchy bugers that he just need to pick while on the air or something. They can totally take a break every 45 min, I mean it's hard enough just to hold your bladder, can't imagine an itchy nostril w/buger balls 😅

    Track down by hueristics draws 2.5 cards for 2 mana. Also scry 3 lets you keep and stack any keepable other cards unlike anticipate, see garruk land you don't need and creature and bottom the land put creature on top and you don't have to bottom garruk, same with good spells. Or see 3 lands on turn 2 after keeping a 2 lander and top all 3 instead of bottoming 2 making you likely to miss the next land drop. And it's hard to imagine missing a land or creature going 4 cards deep in green, or late game not seeing a creature card or even just setting up the next turn with 3 lands on bottom or your garruk on top and 2 lands to bottom is fairly playable in top deck wars even if you miss. Also mirraris guile and heroic intervention, basri, white add counters spells, feat of resistance, removal, shrines not having to bottom cards like these is massive and still likely drawing something, especially with scry lands. Bottoming 2 and drawing a scry has dug you 5 deep for your next turn while drawing a dual. 1 mana scry 3 by itself is limited playable. And green does have draw synergies especially simic with say coatl. I think c to c+ is fair on curve but top decking turn 7 that card is a B maybe higher, and toss in ug draw 2 synergies and spell synergies and it's potentially better than opt and helps you dig for your low creature count, as 17 lands 7 creatures and you are overwhelmingly likely to hit going 4 deep with at least a land and dig 2 to 4 deep for one of your creatures. At like 12 ish creatures you fairly consistentlt will hit a creature and almost cannot miss. And at 0 creatures it scrys 3 and still hits a land a huge majority of the time while setting up your draws or bottoming 2 to 3 cards you do not want which is 10% of a limited deck at that point. So build around its maybe b-

    Don't really get LSV's argument on Secure the Scene. It is definitely not a 5-mana Kazmina's Transmutation. Transmutation was an aura that could be removed via enchantment hate or blink effects. Moreover, when the creature died, it went to the graveyard and could be reanimated. Secure the Scene exiles the target creature and replaces it with a token. That's a huge difference. It also hits key Planeswalkers, enchantments, and shrines. Yes, it's better to NOT give the opponent a free 1/1, so I'm not saying this card is amazing. But you will run the first copy of this card in nearly every GW or UW deck. You will probably run 2 copies in this decks if you can get them.

    Regarding Goremand and Marshall's comment about it being better with ETB "each player sacrifices a creature"... I disagree, cause then you open yourelf to the opponent responding with a situational removal that kills your other a creature and havin to sacrifice your 5/5 Flyer...

      @@smolensk83 If I EVER have to put that card into my deck I feel like something went wrong in the draft...even the most defensive decks will not want the card as it can never trade for an opponents card, where stuff like a walking corpse can at least trade with a random cat or dog against boros and can, theoretically at least, win the game...the wall does none of those things...the one place I can see it being MAYBE ok is in a blue/black deck that has Pestilent Haze as the wall encourages your aggressive opponents to overcommit to the board...but in that scenario it does nothing against the midrange and control decks you're going to face...so yes it is an easy F

    I think Liliana's Devotee is a bit under-rated here. The ability to make aggressive attacks/trades in combat, and create value for a mere 2 mana is pretty significant. You are paying 2 mana for a 3/2 creature, which is already decent in itself. Giving that tag line of text to your attacking creatures, even in a limited capacity, appears to be quite powerful. I would Probably pick these pretty highly. They can be quite powerful in aggro or midrange decks. Even control decks with a great deal of removal can benefit from these. So, on that note, I believe this card is a bit better than what it is rated here. We will know more after getting a chance to play it in limited though.
