    My guess is that the reason the Sarkhan doesn't take loyalty damage while being a dragon is because it's different from walkers with similar abilities. For example, on Gideon, Battle-Forged, Gideon's 0 ability says "Until end of turn, Gideon, Battle-Forged becomes a 4/4 Human Soldier creature with indestructible that's still a planeswalker" whereas this Sarkhan has no such "still a planeswalker" part on his +1. I guess since he isn't a planeswalker anymore, he can't take that hit to his loyalty counters, whereas a creature with the "still a planeswalker" would have to remove loyalty counters (assuming they don't have any "prevent all damage that would be dealt to it" abilities like the Gideons usually do).

    • @Divock
      @Divock 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So that means that if the sarkhan hits a chandra, the chandra can't target him with her passive, for example, I guess.

    • @Derael
      @Derael 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Really have been surprised it somehow slipped by. It's actually a huge difference, and is very relevant.
      People tend to overrate this card a lot, because they think he can target himself, but in the end it's a 4/4 for 3 that can't block. Sure, you can attack with it every turn, but opponent will likely kill it with damage, and it dies to Ob-Nixilus cruelty. A lot of removal in the set can actually kill him pretty easily, and he doesn't really snowball like some other planeswalkers. So I wouldn't give him anything above A-, maybe even B+.

    • @TheXasti
      @TheXasti 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He snowballs if you have a proliferate deck. He keeps any +1/+1 counters and proliferate will hit his loyalty and his counters. So you drop Gideon, give him a counter, then proliferating twice gives you an indestructible 5/5. One more and it gets past Cruelty, leaving only exile effects. He is really only good in the W/G go wide deck. When you have the ability to put blockers down and proliferate a lot. And in that scenario, he shines very brightly. Keep in mind you don't have to drop Gideon on curve. Treat him as a planeswalker first and an attacker second. Giving something lifelink, indestructible, or vigilance is very strong. The fact you can slam him into anything your opponent is trying to block with is just gravy.
      If you are lucky enough to get Gideon and a God Eternal, drop the God first to eat most of the removal then use Gideon to drive the win home.

    About the Bola's Citadel and Command the Dredhorde: they are similar to showcase how Bolas and Liliana do their job when they have power. Bolas will sacrifice things (in this case life points) to cast really all sort of spells (you can cast from library), using all his knowledge to do so (you can look at the top card of your library), and we know it is not above him to sacrifice his minions to do win the battle (the tap text), while Liliana is capable of sacrifice too (life points), but as a necromancer she will be casting resurrection spells (bring from graveyard), but even better, she is powered up by the Chain Veil, thus able to cast from both graveyards. They really nailed the flavor in this set.

  • @Derael
    @Derael 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi is actually super powerful, since it can't be bounces by the most common bounce spell (as it is still a LAND, and bounce spells specifically say non-land usually). I lost to this card because I didn't know it, and was going to happily bounce it just to learn that I can't. And in blue I don't have any other removal that can reliably deal with it (Kasmina's Transmutation doesn't works, since those are freaking counters).
    This card is without a shadow of doubt A.

    • @TheXasti
      @TheXasti 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fortunately, any splash can deal with it easily. Destroy target creature does a good job. So does Wanderer Strike and the Wanderer. Casualties of War is a nightmare for it as well. Really, you need either Nissa's emblem or Tomik to protect it. And getting both Vitu/Nissa along with Tomik is an insanely good combo. You turn all your land into untargetable, unkillable nightmares with proliferate.

    • @reeferreview9230
      @reeferreview9230 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The card is pretty easily removed in this set sadly :/ especially since a lot of people play white in sealed. Maybe in draft it will be a little better?

    • @Derael
      @Derael 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reeferreview9230 Don't know about that, there isn't too much removal at common that can kill a 9/9 land.
      In white it's only Wanderer's strike, in blue nothing (both bonuces only work on nonland permanents), in black only Spark Harvest (and Vraska finisher, if they block with it), in red nothing, in green possibly Band Together (if they have 2 creatures with total 9 power) and Kraul Stinger.
      There are a few uncommon removals that hit it, but uncommon removals is uncommon, there is no guarantee they will draw it in time.

  • @weebikarp1806
    @weebikarp1806 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The difference between this Sarkhan's ability and other similar abilities is this:
    Sarkhan doesn't say "and is still a Planeswalker".
    Because of this, it doesn't lose Loyalty to damage and won't die if it loses all Loyalty (since those are Planeswalker rules and its no longer a Planeswalker).
    It keeps its Loyalty abilities bc those are just considered activated abilities

    • @Improbabilities
      @Improbabilities 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So what you're saying is that a slow RB superfriends deck could activate Sarkhan's +1, making at least 3 dragons with menace (hello Angrath), and then remove all Loyalty from Liliana to make sure that the opponent only has one creature left to not block the menace zombies the Plainswalker dragons are now soaring over? Seems like a neat Timmy moment.

I know that Spark Double cots 1 more and gives you a counter and can copy Planeswalkers, but the downside given for Mirror Image, that it only copies your own stuff, is the same here with Spark Double. Tons of cards that are Stealth themed don't have evasion. There are tons of Thief cards without evasion that have the same ability as the Submarine, so no, it's not a flavor fail anymore than those. There's also low power creatures with Trample, a hint that what you want to do with them, and this is the same, you want to use other cards to give the submarine evasion.

      @@Mordalon I don't disagree with you there, those creatures are definitely intended to get bigger. The submarine has no trample, and no indication that you should make it bigger. It is also a definite flavor fail, as in real life submarines are one of the most evasive vehicles we have created. No innate evasion, while probably the correct choice to avoid firing mono blue's card draw into space, makes little sense. This thing is as blockable as a rhinocerous or soldier of some kind. Card sucks.

    • @Mordalon
      @Mordalon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonmcdougal7831 Again, the whole point is that you are meant to GIVE it evasion, something Blue has no problem doing. And it's not a flavor fail. Subs may be hard to detect from land, but even they aren't stealthy all the time. Watch/read ANY story about subs, they still need to make specific maneuvers to become stealthy. I'll again point you to the countless "stealth" themed cards that also lack evasion, like the numerous Scroll Thief/Ophidian variants.

  • @JohnSmith-ty9cr
    @JohnSmith-ty9cr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting...I had a Dreadhorde Invasion on curve in my first game at the prerelease and it procreesed to slowly kill me while my opponent dealt with the army every four turns or so XD I took it out after that but perhaps I should have given it the benefit of the doubt. Also I had a Command the Dreadhorde I didn't play because it looked atrocious to me...

    Parhellion destroyed in 2 of my 7 sealed games. Why 2 angels? So much if the power in this set feels like overkill

      It’s an 8 mana rare, it’s supposed to end the game.

    • @kmaru80
      @kmaru80 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GorillaRadio88 I'm not complaining that it was able to close the game out. My point is it could have done that just as easily with one angel or if those angels left the battlefield. It just feels like pointless overkill

    • @Mordalon

      8 mana rare, doesn't have haste, and needs other creatures out just to attack in the first place.

      All the cards are indeed powerful in this set, however most of the power requires certain situations and timing

    • @kmaru80
      @kmaru80 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheeKrix yes, I also common removal-ed it once and won the game accordingly. Again, I'm not saying it is overpowered in relation to the set or even standard. I just thing that it is unnecessarily powerful. It is a strong closer with 1 angel.

    I think you undersell Feather. I didn't have a Prerelease game which I didn't win once I got him out.
    There are so many amazing interactions with noncreature spell triggers. I had several creatures that had gain +1s or proliferate on noncreature spell and then something like Sahili pushing servos and the value from those spells were amazing.
    You can have a land destroy every single turn. It's absurd.
