    What a walk down memory lane. I remember spending countless hours bashing my head against SOCOM I, II, and Combined Assault. Ever since that style of game is died off, there has been a void I've been unable to fill. Tarkov is the only thing that has come close, despite how different of a game it is.

    Great video J Dog. Hard agree on all points. I grew up on the Tom Clancy series of games and they're unrecognizable to where they originated from. I have so many amazing memories that live rent free in my brain from those years, especially from my first clan I joined in GR. We ran coop missions with the difficulty ramped up and mods for uniforms and weapons. We'd hardly ever finish a mission without losing some or all of us, but damn if it wasn't the most fun ever. It's been pretty awesome to see indie studios bringing milsim tactical gaming back from the dead and I'm optimistic for the future as well.

    Please make more videos like this! I loved the original ghost recon and R6 games, you actually inspired me to reinstall them. I play R6 Siege more than EFT these days and have a lot of fun with it, but it's definitely a departure for the series. A Rainbow 6 retrospective video from you would be amazing to watch.

    This video feels like an amazing direction to take your channel. Your greatest assets are your insight and level-headedness, and those can easily be applied to topics other than Tarkov, too.

    I'm glad you're doing stuff outside of Tarkov now. While I've always enjoyed your insights on the game, it's good to become more diverse. That out of the way, this video is fantastic, and really sums up not only how I've felt about the genre, but also hits me in the gut with how much I miss the golden age. It's an argument I make a decent amount with people I know about how today we have some great production values and things can look and control better than before, but nothing quite captures the feeling that those older games of GR or R6 had. I have touched all of those early access games listed in the video, and while I love what they do, you're spot on with how they just don't nail it yet because of still being developed. Hopefully in time we'll get the love as fans of these kinds of games, but it definitely won't come from major publishers. Again, I love that you're making content outside of Tarkov, and if we get more videos of tactical shooters in general, I'm all in. That out of the way, I think I need to install Ghost Recon again since you've tickled that area of my brain

    I do miss those days. I remember the first time I picked up Socom and Rainbow Six when I was 10 or 11. They were my first introduction into immersive milsim and I've been hooked ever since. The concept of making one wrong mistake could get your team killed. Made the games that much more exciting when you completed them with all your squad mates alive.

    A friend and I played Ghost Recon on PS2. We'd set each other solo soldier challenges, like doing the prison break with a sniper and requiring a one shot one kill policy, or the UN rescue mission using only pistols. "Your mission, should you choose to accept it..." Great fun.

    Maybe it isn't the same as it was in my brain but I have been still kind of waiting for a game like this to come again. I would love to play an updated version of it. I have great memories playing all those old Rainbow Six games and Splinter Cell, Vietcong. So many good games back then. Never could get into Wildlands. It felt like a really dead version of Far Cry or something.

    I play Arma 3 every Sunday with a group, and I can tell you that while on one hand it's the most buggy, jank, broken, UI unfriendly game I have EVER played, we also use a mod for the medical system which, and I'm not kidding, over a 2 hour game you could spend an hour of it doing nothing but twiddling your thumbs if you go down multiple times because it takes that long for the medics to patch you up.
    It is so unfun that it has pretty much been one of the main reasons I've stopped enjoying Arma. Yet they insist on continuing to use it, because it's "milsim realistic"...

    A really nice video I think you managed to capture why many "older" gamer like me are so reminiscent about the older games. I feel like it was somewhere around the early 2000s when developers realised that there are more "stupid" (its not an attack) people who can buy games than the people with common sense so they just started degrading the game experience so it will be more accessible. Thats how I feel about a lot of games I used to play like the Battlefield series or Word of Warcraft just to give 2 example. Only indie or really dedicated developers have the guts now to tell people, that the game I'm making is not for you no matter how much you cry that its hard or too complex.

    • @warlordwossman5722
      @warlordwossman5722 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah and you can rationally explain why, this is not your typical nostalgia "back in the day everything was better" take.
      Prior to esp. 2007 there was so much experimentation, and not everything was hyper focused on trends and chasing "the larger crowd" - just look at all the games the ps2 library has, sure not every game is great but why does it feel like there was at least 10x the amount of fresh ideas back then?
      Sure we got indie games on steam but even those often follow trends like copying souls, copying hollow knight (or anything with recent success).
      And you are also right about Battlefield and WoW, everything gets watered down because the wider gaming audience has been brainwashed by subconscious "dog treats" games like CoD give you for each kill with the medals or the little guitar riff even CoD4 had. People play games because they want to unlock the battlepass and/or the 25 000 attachments and camos while simultaneously complaining every year that the game sucks.

    • @MortalMilka
      @MortalMilka ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warlordwossman5722 And the other thing came to mind is the ability to easily "patch" things nowadays. Back in the day you got the CD and a key if it was a single player and thats it. I had to be good from the ground up. And I don't talk about the bug fixes because its a good thing now, what I mean is that you had to had a set in stone idea for the game, not like many games nowadays, they just realease it in a "state" with like A,B,C options to play and they check which has the most players and just patch for that option from then on.

    • @JDogth3Wise
      @JDogth3Wise  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, there was a time when every game sort of stood apart. It still happens, but you have to dig through a lot more

    @warlordwossman5722 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video.
    And sadly I feel like Tarkov is closer to CoD than the first ghost recon - I would like to hear your take on that personally.
    Anyways I am pessimist since my other favorite genre of shooters (arena shooters) died off as well, I miss products that push one idea to the limit but every shooter right now is a weird bastard child of arcade and tactical, made up and realism inspired. It feels like the bland movies that claim to be made "for the entire family", they have a little bit of everything but to somebody who wants a specific experience they feel like a whole lot of nothing.

    The original Ghost Recon was such an immersive and fun game to play. I'd love for them to release an updated version that can run on modern hardware with no other changes, but this is Ubisoft we're talking about.
    EDIT: Okay maybe some changes like having a better loadout selection menu. Having preset loadouts that you had to scroll through was a huge pain in the ass even back in 2001.

    I think you won't get around open world with AAA devs - this is needed to have long term player engagement (not always done well) but that doesn't mean you cannot still retain the tactical element. And I also think that GHost Recon being a little bit more arcady is ok - after all it isn't able to compete with ARMA for full milsim but rather a mil experience. Breakpoint did a great job of visuals and outfits but its gear score and enemies were just ridiculous - if you place its movements and customisation in a realistic scenario, with more "traditional" enemy elements and you add to that the difficulty of 1-2 shot deaths, injury without instant heal, ammo shortages for non local weapons, etc. and then mix it with the freedom of open world and some (not all) auto generating missions for replayability you actually have a great game outlined already.

  • @Mate-vg2ft
    @Mate-vg2ft ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really, I think the way video games are monetized has evolved to be very parasitic. And this new form of monetization doesn’t mesh well with more hardcore tactical shooters, mainly as the player bases are smaller and monetization options much more heavily limited, which is why we see more and more half-baked PVP shooters with micro-transactions and battle passes.

    I think COD's arcadey style was so strong when it came out at the time of modern warfare 1 & 2 that it took over and other studios tried to copy it. I would argue this is what caused the end of battlefield (which I know isn't a milsim but still).

    as a zoomer born after this game, my goodness you are harsh on the graphics lol, i don't mind lower end graphics especially after seeing hundreds of "4k ultra graphics", something like GR in 2001 is pretty refreshing.
    my first experience with this franchise was Wildlands and it was a good if lacking game, but it made me hungry for more and when i get a gaming pc this game, along with the other classic tactical shooters will be some of the first games i play, unmodified first to get the classic experience youw got before me :) may the tactical shooter space rise to glory again!

      Gangsta, capitalism created video games and these genres. What killed it is corporatism and global market focuses. You know what markets make Bank? The Asian markets. You know what's an easy sell? Multi-player, microtransaction, cookie cutter games. In the same light as these proto milsim games, smaller studios are still making these type of games. This genre hasn't died contrary to the video, it's still being produced by small studios. It's just changed mainly to multi-player focused milsims competing with aaa title arcade shooters. Modding as stated in the video aids in refurbishing these old game styles and inspires the next generation of products. Nostalgia loops In the market cycle every 20 to 30 years, so we may see something similar in the near future if modding doesn't do it first. But don't expect a large studio to make it. They're catering to a global market
