I haven't made these recipes yet and I don't remember where I got them but here they are: Homemade Gesso 1/4 cup plaster of paris or baby powder 1/4 cup water 1/2 cup white acrylic paint 1/4 cup white craft glue Heavy = more plaster or powder Light = more paint Homemade Texture Paste 1/2 cup gesso (above recipe) 1/4 cup mod podge or white glue 1 cup plaster of Paris or baby powder Homemade Clear Gesso 1 cup white glue 1/4 cup water 4-5 heaping tablespoons powdered marble (marble dust or marble flour) OR calcium carbonate(white) If you don't like the baby powder smell in your craft work use plaster of paris. I personally like the smell of baby powder. 😊
I have been using this recipe for the past year and it's been great. I also use colored acrylic paint instead of white and get colored texture paste to match my projects. It's been a lot of fun making different colors. I love your channel, you are so supportive and positive.
I've been using this for years. By now, I just add a bunch of powder, a little glue, a little paint, and a dab of water. Stir, stir, stir. Add more water or powder if needed. I've actually never used store bought texture paste.
I have been using this same recipe for the past year and it's been great, sometimes I will use colored acrylic paint instead of white and get a colored texture paste to match my projects. I love your channel and how positive and supportive you are.
Hi Marta, the texture paste you have shown here is awesome... I have been using this from the past 2-3 years... It lasts for a long time.. If you feel it has hardened, just add a bit of glue n powder n mix it up again.. I also have the normal branded texture paste, but I feel both give the same result but the handmade one smells better.. All my friends say that my work smells too good.. The smell on the projects lasts for like months... :D
Your enthusiasm for creating art is delightful and makes me want to do it also. Thank you, Martha, for assuring us that it's ok to create for our own pleasure. No need to explain or apologize why we do what we do. It's just fun and heart warming. You are such a gift to me with your beautiful and generous soul! God bless always.
What a great recipe. I'm new to mixed media, so I'm trying a few products at a time and will certainly try this myself. I'm so glad I found you on TH-cam. I feel like I have found a new friend. You have such talent, and the best personality. I could watch you over and over. Lou vou...
You're very smart girl!!! and the awesomest part is I can see how fellow crafters get together to share their knowledge with you and that is amazing that is what I love about all of us 💜💜💜
I never thought about homemade gesso or texture paste. Wow! Gotta try it. Thank you for your fun videos. I like yours the most. You have a kind, encouraging style for us beginners.
Ive been making my own pastes forever... the baby powder will give you a nice smooth consistency and if you use marble dust which is what real modeling paste is made from (you can get it for about 7 dollars at dickblick.com), you get a more accurate texture paste, slightly less smooth with just a bit more texture. Either will work great. You can also use the Marble dust to make clear gesso, white gesso, and any color gesso. Its what is used in real store bought gessos, pastes and clear gesso. But I do love using baby powder for a nice stencil paste since it is nice and smooth. :)
I bought some from Amazon about 4lbs for a little over $10 I really like this it is very fine. www.amazon.com/Fredrix-Powdered-Marble-Sizing-Priming/dp/B000YQK52S/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1487647848&sr=1-1&keywords=marble+dust
Maremi, You mentioned in your video, that there are so many videos and ways to make this that you did not think you had to do a video on it. I am so glad that you did. I would not have even thought of making my own. Thank you for sharing. i really enjoy listening to how you passionate you are about all the things you create. Thanks from the States.
That's really cool! I'm glad you made this video. There may already be many videos about it, but I wasn't aware you could make your own so I wouldn't have thought to look it up. Thank you! I just came across your channel a couple weeks ago and I've been really loving your videos and your personality.
Oh Danielle... You have NO idea. You have hit the mother lode of WONDERFUL, inspiring, informative, videos... the bonus? This is THE sweetest lady you could ever hope to meet. So glad you found her!!
Thank you Marta for this video. I’ve been watching you for about 3 years, and love your talent man Emily ! She is very talented like her Mom. I enjoy your videos. I tend to watch you when I climb into bed and relax and drink up your talents. I find your voice to be calming and soothing. I do go back and rewatch and try to craft along with you Thank you for what you teach me. Hugs to the beautiful family. Barb Baylis. South Carolina USA
Thank you.👍 💜 it's always nice to see someone else's perspectives on old videos you also use this as a gesso you'd add more paint or water or glue to get it to the consistency you like give it a try!
I haven't tried my own texture paste I'm new to texture paste and like products I have tried my own clear gesso (I don't use the paint.) and love it .a tip that I heard was to use distilled water not plain tap water, because first of all bacteria that could be in the water also different things that they use in water treatment if you have city water and different minerals especially from ground or well water so distilled water seems to make sense if storing it.
learned a lot making my owner's. brands purchased helped me with consistency and some were smoother, and mine morphed from coarser gesso using baking soda instead of baby powder; lighter texture paste to firm molding paste adding more cornstarch.
Hi, Marta! Love, love, love your tutorials! Just got into mixed media and this was my first recipe :). When I was watching, I thought why not make this with colored paint...so I did. I'm working on some mini bird houses for Christmas gifts and thought this would be perfect. Tested my first ever heat gun on my first ever texture on my first ever birdhouse craft~ L O V E it! Thank you for all your inspiration and incredible talent! We can all make beautiful things! xoxo Monica
Hello Maremi. I'm happy to say that I've made many of your projects and absolutely love them. I've been using a handmade gesso consisting of 1 part white acrylic or latex paint, 1 part flour and 1/2 part of white glue. It works beautifully and I've made some really beautiful textures with it.
Thank you for this video , have most of the stuff here but just need the paint, oh and baby powder or maybe baking powder or soda might work that's what I have here. Saves me on buying texture paste, thank you
I've made my paste for years by mixing glue paint and good Ole corn starch works great. there is a "perfect" mixture to use so it don't crack but once you find it I personally life using it better than any expensive stuff
I already bought the ingredients for textured paste Marta. I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I was abit afraid. but seeing ur video it gave me to confidence to go and make it. thanks again Marta for your awesome informative video.
I made Gabrielle's recipe and added metallic paints instead of white paint. Gave me a beautiful shimmery paste. Since we use the paste at school it was budget friendly and the kids loved it.
Hi Marta, another lovely video, thanks !! I first came across this receipe on Gabrielle Pollacco's blog and tried it !! works wonderfully for me , have been using it for years!! it is better to keep in a tight Jar, you can add a few drops of white vinegar and I like to use well boiled and then cooled water to the mix if required. never had a problem of keeping it in room temperature for months !! then I experimented with corn flour+ same ingredients, paste gets a little translucent on drying so one can add white paint to the mix. Tried wall putty for coarser texture , works very well on canvas and wood. one can add sand to the baby powder mix for a coarse texture as well. am sure more people will try this awesome receipe of yours and explore the wonder-fulled world of Mix media hugs
Was researching homemade texture paste and came across your video. All the other recipes I've come across are for large batches. I truly liked yours because it was in a smaller amount. I want to try it before making a large batch. Your tutorial was great. Your comments were super helpful. I will be back to your site again. Thank you, thank you.
Hi June, I tried with cornstarch, but I didn't like it, I may have had too much of something (glue or paint) would love to know if you tried it again and how you liked it?
Hi Marta, I have a few questions about this video. 1) How long roughly could I expect an item using this homemade paste last? 2) Would it go off or mouldy? 3) What is the difference between Gesso & Texture Paste? 4) What is the difference & what would you use Heavy & Light Gesso for? 5) What stencil did you use? It's lovely :) Sorry for all the questions, you can never have too much info :) Thanks for an honest opinion for it. Nona x
I MADE A BATCH OF IT LAST YEAR AND STILL IS GOOD. LIKE YOU SAID BEFORE, THE ONLY THING IS THAT IT GETS WATERY BUT IF YOU MOVE IT AROUND IT GETS BACK ITS CONSISTENCY. HAVE A GREAT WEEK.
This is a really good video. Sometimes it's good to make a video on you make it. It gives something new to the group of videos that has already been made.
I've never used texture paste before, but have wanted to. I will be making this soon. Thanks for showing that it can be done on a budget. Hope to see more of these kinds of videos. Thanks! ☺✌💚
Hi Marta, I made a big batch over a year ago, same recipe as yours, and it is still good! Only, it separates, but I just stir it and it works perfectly.
I been using this paste always! And I really love the texture, I live in Mexico and is too expensive to bring stuffs from US, so I made my own paste, my own embellishments, and sometimes my own paper 😉 tfs
Wow Wow WOW! So helpful! New to mixed media--never even gave it a thought until I 'met' you, Marta! Now I try new things, and this will really help the budget this close to Christmas! Thank you Millions!
Yes I make my own modeling paste, I basically use the same recipe you used Marta, mine has lasted several months and Im still using it, I Love it cause its inexpensive and I am on a Budget. Thanks for sharing
I like your paste. I have always liked the smell of baby powder too so I am sure it make the paste smell a lot better then most. Thank you so much for sharing. I can't wait to try it.
I think this is a great video, the paste looks wonderful and I love those powders. I've made one batch in the past and liked it but I used corn starch instead of baby powder because that's what I had. I like the smell of baby powder though so I might try it next. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the paste recipe. There are not many recipes online that aren't made with glitter. As well as the cost there is the convenience - if the commercial one runs out in the middle of a project you are not stuck with nothing to work with. I have made and use my own gessos and love them (especially the clear one which mattes down shiney magazine pix) , and I am just off to make this modelling paste. It's ingredients are the similar to my gesso (recipe of Pam from the Paper Outpost), so it should work well. I love your channel and your ideas, and I am sure cost cutting measures will not compromise the integrity of the finished work.
I also make clear Gesso. Made with Marble Dust. It's a 4lb bag with shipping around 12.00. will last a lifetime!!can use it instead of the powder. Receipe is from pinkpoodlecrafts. But Martas works great.
Going to try this right now. Love your videos. I’m new to TH-cam and you are so positive and have all the tools right at your fingertips. I don’t like a lot of dead air.
hi there, I just found your channel and it is amazing! I am in Dublin but find it so hard to find craft supplies as everything has to be ordered from the UK or USA and shipping is so expensive. It is nice to know that we can save some money with DIYs like this.
I have used a very similar recipe. I like it because I can make a small batch in whatever consistency I need. I also like using different paint colors as well.
Wow, looks so easy to make! I'm going to try to make my own texture paste really soon. Thank you so much for showing us how to make it! I had heard about home made texture paste before but had never watched a video about it. Looks nice!
I've never tried making my own texture paste. I've tried gesso and came to the conclusion that store bought is the way to go with that. however, after watching this video, I will be trying to make my own texture paste in a day or two.
love your videos 💜 I have made my own I black and grey/silver for about a year ago. still works great. my white one is not home made. just because I had two jars/box of it. would love to try to make clear gesso. thanks again for sharing your expertise with us. 😃
I tried this as soon as I saw the video. I didn't have baby powder so used corn starch instead. It worked although I don't know if it works as well as with the baby powder. Will be picking some up when I go shopping again. :)
Such a wonderful video, as all of your videos are. Thanks for sharing. P.S. just a wee little thing to mention with love: breathing any fine powder like baby powder or plaster of paris can be really bad for you. Good thing we call have masks now. Lol ;) Stay safe crafty people.
Baby powder comes in different types. Some baby powder is talcum based and some is cornstarch based. Which do you use? I have watched other texture paste videos; but, I have to say that yours is the most fun to watch. I enjoyed it.
Thank you! We trust your opinion! Thanks for thinking of us low budget crafters! Now to figure out how to DIY magicals. Or maybe I DIY all my texture paste and gesso, saving all that money for Lindy's!!!
Thank you so much Maremi for posting this video...Many times I am stopped from creating because I simply don't have the funds to purchase the purchased versions of products used not only in your videos but in others as well. I also was wondering if you might do a video on how to create stencils from items around the house. Once again I am unable to pay for the store bought stencils, but would love to create with them....another item of interest would be the creation of those gorgeous flowers that you use in your card making. Have you made any videos on how to create your own florals to use in these creations? I am addicted to your videos...
I’ve made but had the same problem. Kept thinking it needed more powder. I should have left it because your came out awesome! So them I thew it away and bought liquitex gesso, matte gel medium and the texture paste. Yea I added and it came out like hard concrete. It was a total fail but your came out perfect. TFS!
I do make my own with basically the same recipe. I noticed that if you use a heat gun, it puffs up to give you even more raised texture. I hope that helps.
Hi Marta. I've made this when I first started to do mixed media a few months ago. But when I ran out of it I decided to buy some. I found that the purchased gesso dried much quicker on its own. However, I'm not sure which is cheaper if you have to go out and still purchase all the ingredients. Unless you purchase budget ingredients because for example a good acrylic paint costs around £3 for a tube. I already had all the ingredients at home when I first made it so it was cheaper for me. Maybe it IS cheaper in the long run to make your own? Love your video as always ❤❤
Wonderful video :) I was really surprised that you have never made your own texture paste before now... I have been making my own for a long time. You might try using baking soda instead of baby powder for a nice sandy texture as well.. it is a truly different effect. Also make sure your container is air tight.. and if you find it a little dry the next time you use it just spray it with water. Thanks so much for sharing your views they are appreciated very much :)
So you have on stores, we have dollar stores in US. That is where I get my cheep shaving cream for the swirled backgrounds using alcohol inks or reinkers.
Thank you for your nice Tips ! Homemade Gesso
1/4 cup plaster of paris or baby powder
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup white acrylic paint
1/4 cup white craft glue
Heavy = more plaster or powder
Light = more paint
Homemade Texture Paste

1/4 cup mod podge or white glue
1 cup plaster of Paris or baby powder
Homemade Clear Gesso
1 cup white glue
1/4 cup water

Thnx for the recipes!!!
You're welcome! 😊
Cindy Anonson oh these are fabulous recipes. saved. And can't wait to make & use them💕 thank you x
Paula Brennan your welcome! 💜
I have been using this recipe for the past year and it's been great. I also use colored acrylic paint instead of white and get colored texture paste to match my projects. It's been a lot of fun making different colors. I love your channel, you are so supportive and positive.
Is it necessary to add acrylic paint?
I've been using this for years. By now, I just add a bunch of powder, a little glue, a little paint, and a dab of water. Stir, stir, stir. Add more water or powder if needed. I've actually never used store bought texture paste.
thank you xoxox :)
Tonya Dull have you ever found that it cracked after two years and after you painted over it?
Does it last long? I'm looking for alternatives but worried cracks may develop in the future as the previous commenter pointed out.
I am new. What's it for?? Can you share.

I think this is great! I definitely want to try making my own. So economical! Your videos are wonderful and I could watch and listen to you all day!
I love what you did with the paste and the stencil. The colors made the pattern pop out beautifully. Excellent demo, Maremi.
Just found this when I was looking for a product to make winter scenes with snow! I think this will work! Blessed and safe days!

This is really helpful nice that I find this video you done ✅ . Thanks for sharing
I like your paste. I have always liked the smell of baby powder too so I am sure it make the paste smell a lot better then most. Thank you so much for sharing. I can't wait to try it.

I forgot to say, I also do the same thing too. But also instead of the baby powder you can use baking Soda and it gives a big more grit or tooth.

hi there, I just found your channel and it is amazing!
Will try this tomorrow. Never made it before. Thanks so much.
Wow, looks so easy to make! I'm going to try to make my own texture paste really soon. Thank you so much for showing us how to make it! I had heard about home made texture paste before but had never watched a video about it. Looks nice!
thank you for the recipe. I use high performance spackling paste from Home Depot to about $4 for an 8-ounce tub works really well.
I used the all purpose spackling paste and added a bit of varithane to it. (don't know why) it works great!
Carol Cervantes it's so crazy the things that we can substitute for the craft item which cost a fortune just because it's made for "crafts"
I have made my own gesso with the same recipe. Works great. Thanks for sharing Marta.
I‘ll definitly try that! Thank you!
Wow I've never done this! Results looks great! tfs!
O m g I had no idea I could make my own! Thank you Marta! I will definitely do this!🎨
Also made my own as well as gesso and it's well worth the effort! Tnx Martha, you can make a video on anything and we'll still luvit😘
Enjoy the video will give this a try soon as I brought some paste, thank you Marta for sharing!! Hugs Liz...
Thank you. So exciting ! Will try tomorrow. You are a gift.💕💕💕👩🎨💫
Thank you so much - I will definitely use your method after I use up the jar I purchased.
This was fantastic and very helpful!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the idea and instructions. I craft on a tiny budget.
I've never tried making my own texture paste. I've tried gesso and came to the conclusion that store bought is the way to go with that. however, after watching this video, I will be trying to make my own texture paste in a day or two.
Thought I would give it a go......im very impressed with my results. Thanks for reviewing this product👍🏻
Marta you are so fun..I do make my own all the time. I also sometimes add magical's to make colored paste
love your videos 💜
I have made my own I black and grey/silver for about a year ago. still works great. my white one is not home made. just because I had two jars/box of it. would love to try to make clear gesso.
thanks again for sharing your expertise with us. 😃
I have made my own modeling paste for a long time. I love it!
Great tutorial. I have recently tried making my own paste using the same recipe.
Wowwwww I’ll def be making this
Great idea Thankyou will remember when I run out to try the recipe.
Have a wonderful day crafting.
Such great ideas! Thank you Maremi! God Bless You for your works :)
I tried this as soon as I saw the video. I didn't have baby powder so used corn starch instead. It worked although I don't know if it works as well as with the baby powder. Will be picking some up when I go shopping again. :)
I use thus home made paste as well I enjoy having stuff on hand .
As usual marta, love love love your help!
Fantastic. Thank you for testing this out. I need to try it.
Such a wonderful video, as all of your videos are. Thanks for sharing. P.S. just a wee little thing to mention with love: breathing any fine powder like baby powder or plaster of paris can be really bad for you. Good thing we call have masks now. Lol ;) Stay safe crafty people.
Very cool! I can't wait to try this!
Baby powder comes in different types. Some baby powder is talcum based and some is cornstarch based. Which do you use?
I have watched other texture paste videos; but, I have to say that yours is the most fun to watch. I enjoyed it.
Thank You so much, I will be making this today. Love your videos.
Hi I'm very impressed TFS , Sigita suggested I watch your video ...and now I know , thank you
Margaret
Thanks for sharing !!! I have already seen this recipe and was very interested to try, you try for me and aprove !!! Great job !!
Thank you! We trust your opinion! Thanks for thinking of us low budget crafters! Now to figure out how to DIY magicals. Or maybe I DIY all my texture paste and gesso, saving all that money for Lindy's!!!
I will have more budget videos coming for sure :)
I cannot imagine what could work same way as magicals..... :)
TFS!
I have always made my own and use her recipe to and I love it.
I will be doing this!!! So easy and cheaper!!! But make sure you stir it if your storing it for a long time
So you have on stores, we have dollar stores in US. That is where I get my cheep shaving cream for the swirled backgrounds using alcohol inks or reinkers.
wow will be giving this a go thankyou so much x
