Really glad he made this. TCC was my introductory guide into Magic. Love the thought of more people falling in love with the channel thanks to videos like these.
I bought the foundations starter collection as a 1 year in new player. It was perfect for someone like me to go in, see what I'd like to play and get a pile of super usable cards. I have 1 deck and am working on a landfall deck now. I accidentally bought my commander in a showcase over a YEAR ago for it to save on shipping for my Astarion cards. (For those curious, it's Tatyova, Benthic Druid) I highly recommend it for someone who has 1, maybe 2 decks. It's an excellent starting point.
Between my recent promotion and the over abundance of magic products, I have not been able to keep up with everything going on in Magic. I appreciate videos like this helping long time fans in situations like mine catch up on what’s worth snagging when I finally have time to enjoy the hobby again
bundles were worth it when they were 35-40 dollars. 55 dollars is highway robbery. they used to contian 10 packs and 80 lands, the only nice thing is now they have a large cool spindown, but they had that when they were 40.
I recently got into paper Magic after playing via Tabletop Simulator for a while. Got the Beginner Box and Starter Collection even though i'm a bit outside of the target demographic of beginners. I'm having a really good time with these cards - sometimes I need a simpler format (like Jumpstart) or simpler cards (like those you get in those two collections), and definitely needed a proper introduction to Standard. Happy with my purchases!
As a new player - I would spend a couple hundred on foundation bundles and starter set, then fall in love with bloomburrow. Then buy singles to complete my standard decks
Yeah, really important to know what (if anything) is worth buying. One reason to keep practicing shuffling skills is that with all the rapid releases, one needs to be good at finding their cards in a mountain of "I swear this was just released!" piles
Foundations is where it’s at. Jumpstart is super fun. Maybe the cards aren’t worth a ton but man they nailed the flavor. Been playing intermittently since freakin Homelands and I think Foundations is my favorite set I’ve played so far
Beware of bundles. They are horribly randomized. They used to be properly randomized, but no longer are. I've bought a bundle of Duskmourn and Foundations. In the Duskmourn bundle, out of 9 packs, I got 3 identical rares (3 silent hall creeper). In the Foundations bundle, it got even worse: I got three of one rare and two of another (3 Brass's Bounty, 2 Time Stop).
Really could have used a summary slide. All of the names are so similar I can't remember what group does what. Overall really helpful though. I've been wanting to get into magic and seeing all of the products compared in one place really makes it useful to know what to buy.
Buy a good printer, print up whichever alternate arts you want, plenty of good sites, that let you choose with art you want to use. Make a cube, use those same cube cards to make commander decks. Or print up standard decks. The amount of products out now is ridiculous. Sold my cube for thousands of dollars, not worth spending money on it anymore.
I have 18 decks, all upgraded precons! I cannot urge anyone more to buy the Thunder Junction Izzet Deck. It's got so many really nice Izzet staples and can lead to super explosive turns. I spent maybe 10 dollars upgrading it and it all meshed in nice. I do recommend switching Niv Mizzet to your command zone but the deck does great with Stella in the drivers seat too. Top 3 funnest out of all of my decks.
as a returning player it seems all are never worth the money. You get much more out of it if you just buy singles most of the time. Sometimes commander seem to be interesting.
I may be super lucky but I have only made money from my play booster well still keeping most cards I use. I am newer (just started this year) but I bought a Phyrexian all will be one set booster and sold like 6-8 cards for about 95$ to CK and still had most the box as my collection is new I just want more cards so that worked out I did the same with a brothers war set booster only made about 80 for that one and kept most cards
I'm going to be honest. I'm not buying anything any more. I'm so burnt out on all the products, bans, rotating modern. I don't have the energy, time or money to keep up. Prof really helped me get into the game, but WotC has now made me exit the game.
I've only been playing for roughly 2 months now and so far I've bought commander decks, play/draft/set boosters and some bulk lots from eBay. As a new player the commander decks were a good start for me to understand how decks are meant to play. The booster packs are just fun, a chance of very playable cards. The bulk lots I've bought have been a good place for me to find cards and abilities that I've never heard of before, sure I'm probably not getting great value for money but its all worth to me in the knowledge I gain looking through the bulk. My most liked card I got from a bulk lot is Genesis Chamber, everyone gets tokens and the token deck I made seems to flourish once it is out.
I do wish you'd consider amending the statement to "Might be available at your LGS", they're not all fortunate enough to get a significant volume of allocations for certain product lines.
Proxy everything, unless you want to play in tournaments. In that case, buy bootlegs and get the reals that you can’t bootleg from your lgs. That’s about all you need to know.
Until anybody decides to deck call you and you get banned forever, or do the really awkward refusal to let a judge see your deck lmao. That's always a classic.
@@Elfenlied8675309 I’ve used bootlegs in very high level events and have never been called out. I have also been deck checked in said events and have been completely fine. You’d only ever be caught if the cards come out of the sleeves, which will only happen if you’re suspected of having marked cards.

All of these more modern types seem so stupid, did they really have to go away from booster packs and starter decks...? Just to make more money off of the "I NEED TO GAMBLE MORE WITH MAH SHINY CARDBOARD" types..?
They want to make buying a box more palatable and cost around $100 again. Even though it's less packs than the old draft boosters, but to be fair they kept things the same for a long time. I'm a curmudgeon about a lot of price changes, but play boosters going up a buck is not really one of them

Without even watching the video: “buy singles!”
Hahahat😂😂😂😂😂
This is secretly a Christmas buying guide for friends of mtg players.
Cracking packs is good though
For experienced players absolutely. But for new players buying singles has a learning curve too.
For upgrading yes. Commander precons are excellent products that are often cheaper than singles.

Congrats! Cant let your guard down with the t100 chasomg you i guess.

I miss precon standard decks.
Yooooooo, those were the times! I last bought some in like 2012 or so
Same. I want to get into sixty card, for the first time since 2005 but have no idea where to start.
Foundations is where it’s at. Jumpstart is super fun. Maybe the cards aren’t worth a ton but man they nailed the flavor. Been playing intermittently since freakin Homelands and I think Foundations is my favorite set I’ve played so far
You can also build fun commander decks out of the Foundations Starter Collection.
Find a decklist online, see which sets the singles are from, and but collector boosters until you have every card
Really clear! Thanks for making this
The fact this video came out at this point in my life is insane. I thank you TCC. Just starting my magic journey. Just bought jump scare! 1st deck.
Good video right before Christmas as getting a couple of Magic gifts for friends and family.
Oh my, do I miss the “inner” box in the bundles…
same. When I donated a few of the boxes i didnt want anymore to my LGS's free play area, I still kept those inner boxes. very useful to have.
Thank you for always being here looking out for us Prof, you're the best
I picked up the starter pack for my son and I. It was perfect 😊
Really wanting the Foundations Starter Collection box, but looks like they’re sold out everywhere. Just been doing Magic Arena for now instead
Great work, Prof! Thanks!

Im still confused on why we need a spread sheet to determine what product has what in it?

I wish you could get cool collector booster stuff in normal boosters kinda like how you can get those cool art rares in normal pokemon boosters.

I don't have the energy, time or money to keep up.

Play boosters seem not really better than draft but more expensive than set boosters... Just a cheeky way to increase prices in my opinion.
Proxy everything.
sometimes is cheaper to buy singles than to proxy
Buy 6 starter packs and hope you can build a one or two color deck out of it. Oh i thought this was 1995.
Help my academic game box has started to develop white spots. 😢 is it doomed or can i still save it?
$53.99 for the bundle? Jeez, I remember when the fatpacks were cheaper than the commander precons
Love you!!!

I buy printer ink
Can The Instructor teach me next time?
is it just me or does the starter collection seem like a glorified deckbuilders toolkit
Why do jumpstart packs have two layers of packaging?!
Singles! Buy singles! And if your starting from scratch maybe a pre-con or two but that’s it! Buy singles!
I wanna get wild and mix 3 jumpstart packs into 60 cards decks. Don’t send the pinkertons
Singels?
You sir. are a gentleman and a scholar.
Returning player, and in AZ, time for a trip to Chandler
Don't!
easy. nothing. nothing at all.
Correct answer: buy singles.
I do wish you'd consider amending the statement to "Might be available at your LGS", they're not all fortunate enough to get a significant volume of allocations for certain product lines.
Printer, paper and ink…
A printer. You’re welcome
The secret is buying an HD printer (I actually don't print)🤫🤫😂😂
buy proxys :)
short answer: oversized mtg cards
Buy 2 of everything, just to be safe.
❤❤❤
you have got all of my friends and I addicted to magic!!!! We are all still learning but you have been fantastic assistance. Thank you from all of us!
Buy none of it anymore 8)
Just proxy ;)
❤
Save time from watching the video: “none of it is worth it go buy singles”
Hate to be that guy, but just proxy your stuff if you don't want to support WotC and Hasbro
BUY LANDS. THE GOOD ONES. not beta and alpha though…. Unless you a money man or babe ❤

None of them. BUY SINGLES!!!
I asked my dad what is an incel , and he told me to come here to the comment section.
Your dad is a wise man
Unfortunately i would argue its more fun to open collectirs boosters higher risk higher reward hahahah usually higher loss though
Scratch tickets for betas
it's a pachinko gambling addiction after all
@@Justnothankyou132 The hilarious part is that mtg packs on average pay out way higher than a lottery ticket and will sometimes cost less money lmao.

This is a long video to say "singles"
Always try and buy singles. Avoid gambling on packs.
Duskmourn precon came with a plastic clicking life wheel that goes up to 99 😊❤
Why would they nerf the amount of boosters in Play Boxes?

You should buy a board game versus Magic: The Gathering “product.”
Do you have any recommendations?
@ Root is a fun one.
Buy food, skip buying magic. Just play Arena for free to scratch that itch if you can't quit
