      Same here. Born in 1962. My brother, who is 12 years older than me, had a couple Tijuana Brass albums when he was in high school in the late 60s. I always loved hanging out in my brother's room when he was playing his TJB albums. So I was listening to Herb as a preschooler and loving it!

    Saw him& theTjb in August 1965 at the height of his popularity at the Ohio State Fair ... it was my very 1st concert with 200 to follow from Elvis to Dylan & many many in between I was 16 at the time of the Herb Alpert show ... and yes I went on to buy all of their LPs ... at that time they rivaled the Beatles with albums on Billboards top 100 chart that year,they charted 5 in 1965, nobody has matched that accomplishment since, he's always been my favorite trumpet player ... he's also the only performer ever to score a #1 hit singing😮&leading a band !!!

      Herb's horn on Zorba is par excellence -- that's so hard to play that staccato and have that kind of clarity on a horn and 1 handed to boot!

    • @captainnice9698
      @captainnice9698 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That is so NOT TRUE that the Midnight Special "normally had lip-synced music". In fact 99% of the bands who played on the show played live. That was one of Burt Sugarman's (the shows producer) requirements.

    • @d.e.b.b5788
      @d.e.b.b5788 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the early days, they usually played live. As the show went on, they had more and more examples of lip synching performances, as many performers couldn't live up to their recorded music doing it live. Also, there were many 'mixed' performances where live was supported by taped recorded music (often of instruments and singers that were not present for the 'live' performance on MS). Whenever you hear a performance that is note for note EXACTLY as a record, and the performer's hands don't match what you hear being played, it's pretty obvious that there's some lets say 'not live' enhancement being done.

      The first time I heard Casino Royale ABC Was using it as background music for the Grand Prix of Monaco on Wide world of Sports! Still remember Gilles Villeneuve launching his Ferrari 512 over the the ass of I believe it was Ronny Peterson's Lotus to that song!🤣👍🎼🎵😎

    That Coney Island 1975 album was the bomb with Chuck Findley on 2nd trumpet. Very nostalgic remembering very clearly experimenting with Pop’s foldout cassette recorder, his Sharp cassette player. Chicago, Herb Alpert & the Beach Boys issueing forth, detaching the speakers & squeezing all of the stereo soundstage outa the poor little unit ... hahaha. 2day’s the anniversary of Pop’s passing, I’m back i/t family home settling up the estate. Found the manual 4 that player, the player itself long gone ... think Mom diced it ages ago. In 7wks time she will have passed too. In the ensuing decades I’ve collected some serious analogue audio ... all stuffed temporarily into the living room & producing considerably better stereo ... and a wider repertoire but still including those cherished Herb Alpert TJB, Sergio Mendes Brasil-66, Spyro Gyra & Flora Purim recordings. Just last week I had the Sony Walkman Pro repaired/serviced ... analogue audio bling!

      Strangely enough, the other trumpet player here is Chuck Findley’s brother Bobby.

    I'll always watch a Midnight Special clip, because they may not have had the most cohesive show lineups, but it was always LIVE! Same with Rock Concert.

    You couldn't listen to Rock music on the radio in the 70s and not hear the voice of Wolfman Jack. Herb was a great Trumpatear. There were several great ones, especially in the 70s and 80s. To name 3 were Doc Severinsen (who eventually became Carson's right hand man....who was very underrated), Herb Alpert (a shear genius) and my all time favourite, Maynard Ferguson. I was able to see Maynard while in College, during our Green Country Jazz Festival in 82 and, was also treated to hearing Buddy Rich on the drums!!
