  • In this ‘Manc About Town’ video ep. 2, I look at the story of how Morrisey and his cult band The Smiths produced an iconic image posing in front of an old youth club at a forgotten corner of their Manchester hometown.
    You know that an image is iconic when people from all over the world travel to take their picture on the same spot.
    In this case, think Abbey Road but up North.
    I think we can learn important principles from the Smiths about how to make your brand (or band 😉) connect and be celebrated by audiences.
    Simplicity, keeping it personal and being spontaneous can lead to creating incredible content and marketing which will be remembered for decades and beyond.

    Nice video. I was staying in Salford a few weeks back and had to stop by for a picture. I can't think of a more iconic doorway anywhere else.

    It is the most fabulous building and I loved ever brick in it. I had a magnificent (personal) tour inside and I was lucky enough to leave a note on the wall in the Smiths Room. Brilliant building and history of serving the youth in an otherwise gritty neighbourhood. Thanks for this snapshot. And of course, we did have out pic taken a la The Smiths outside.

    Thank you for this interesting video of you walking around SLC, different angles of the building and a nice description of the importance of the roots. The photograph is iconic. I wonder if the sweater Morrissey was wearing in that photo is still around. I like the small heart-shaped drawings in that sweater. I felt sadness when I found out that many buildings that appeared on Stop Me video no longer exist, like the furniture shop and also the Albert Finney shop.

    • @harrisonk89
      @harrisonk89  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A pleasure Pierre and appreciate your comment. Maybe his sweater is in the museum inside the building. There are still many areas in Salford and Manchester which are unchanged from the old days!

    I used to work directly across the road and used to walk from Regent Road along Coronation St, St Ignatius etc and back round for lunch. Being more into bands like Slaughter and the Dogs and Buzzcocks I needed a colleague to point out the iconic status of the club.

    Really good vid thanks Harrison, I needed cheering up after Sunday's footie, no ticket (again) I was in the Winslow, same clobber on with a few tweeks & a nice painted "bluenose".
    I loved The Smiths as a kid & still do, I remember the 1st time one of my big brothers played me a copy, of a much copied live tape of them that was handed around his middle school, before the 1st album came out. I remember hearing Johnny Marr's guitar & that was it, move over Elvis, I was hooked! Can't remember the exact year but it was deffo before the 1st album came out as I was bouncing around the sofas in my parents old house when I 1st heard them. Then I remember sitting in my Big brothers bedroom in my parents 2nd house listening to the original copy of the 1st album he bought as soon as it came out.
    Set me off down the path of getting into Manchester / Madchester bands. I love Joy Division, New Order, The Stone Roses, anything Ian Brown does I'm a massive fan of Ian. Inspiral Carpets & on & on. Brilliant stuff from totally different times, you really had to listen to the radio, watch TOTP on Thursday, go around to your mates houses & listen to their parents records, or any bootlegged recordings anyone had a copy of.
    I find it quite hard to keep up with modern music, TH-cam is probably my go to, but I always find myself listening to music from when I was a kid, or before my time. I've no idea how the younger generations keep up with everything moving at 1,000mph. My better half, or my better 99/100ths as I prefer to call her played me a tune earlier tonight & I instantly started the intro to Where is my mind by Pixies. Turns out it wasn't a cover but a new tune (or new to me at least) by some bloke called Kelly who has a machine gun or something, good tune, & nice to see the old ways of passing down info by word of mouth still works for me!
    sorry, you've set my mind off on a journey down memory lane again, & I can't stop typing!
    What's your thoughts about OMD? Great Wirral Band, I love everything by them, but buzzed off "Red Frame White Light" as the telephone number they sing about in the song is the actual phone number of a public phone in Meols. I walked past it one day in the 90's, the phone rang, I went in picked up the receiver & started do-der-doo-der-do-der-dooin' the intro then said Red Frame White Light, heard a giggle then they hung up! You can't make this stuff up!
    Keep up the good work, all the best!

    Excellent. The choice of this setting reflects the unique (and uniquely English) genius of the Smiths. If I ever make it to Manchester (from Connecticut in the US), I will not miss the pilgrimage to Salford Lads Club.
