You have to admire a man like Patrick Stewart. All that success, and that dignified poise... and he's perfectly happy not taking himself seriously and being utterly ridiculous.
Especially considering he used to be a very stiff actor that DID take him too seriously until his Star Trek co-stars helped loosen him up.

I went to a Star Trek convention and asked Sir Patrick Stewart if any of that was improvised. He said it was entirely scripted, and that the show had absolutely brilliant writers.
By the time he realised it was scripted, he'd seen everything anyway so he wasn't bothered.

Yup, all scenes in GoT are centred around the scenes where there are exposed lady parts.
It all got fleshed out as background for those specific scenes.

Well, the viewer doesn't necessarily get to see the gratuitous nudity; Just Patrick. And he's seen everything, so the viewer is irrelevant.
This is probably the greatest 4 minutes in the history of television comedy. Patrick Stewart is an absolute legend.

The skit with Liam Neeson trying to get into comedy is also one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Reading Patrick Stewart's Memoirs, he mentions filming this scene. Apparently Ricky Gervais couldn't stop laughing at all, and Stephen Merchant had to stand in for him for much of it. Especially the way Patrick pronounced "knickers" really cracked Ricky up. Patrick writes "the two hours I spent with those guys, though, were one of the most fun times I have ever experienced in show business"
I love how they present all the special guests as so nice and normal at first but then they quickly descend into insanity
So true! This is a new layer from which to appreciate any rewatching.
They're all charicatures of the worst things people say about them. I'd never seen anything with Ross Kemp in it before I watched Extras. Imagine how blown away I was when I found out what he was like in real life. The guy really knew how to take the piss out of himself, and that's what makes this show great. They all aren't afraid to go in hard on themselves.
Hey, I thought Diana Rigg kept her sanity quite impressively when Danny Radcliffe smacked her in the face with his Johnny.
This scene is so genius. And when later in the episode he tells Maggie he's writing a movie and has a part for her! I just laugh my ass off!

Everyone is praising Stewart in this scene but Gervais is hilarious too. His reaction is really what highlights the hilarity of what Stewart is saying. The two really played well off each other.
It is a truism in comedy that being the straight man is more difficult.

@@KingCrab85 Airplane was his first comedy role. His previous roles were all serious acting roles (Forbidden Planet, Poseidon Adventure). Zucker/Abrams/Zucker (writers of Airplane!) cast him because at the time, he was cast against type. Only after the success of Airplane did Nielsen forge a new career in comedies.

I love it when serious actors commit 100% to a comedy bit. Every bit of it is perfect and fun to watch. Like his realization that Ricky didnt get the star trek reference.
Patrick is so awesome. He plays the "dirty old man" card so bloody well.
This has to be one of the all time great comedy scenes. Patrick Stewart's deadpan style works tremendously. Great writing (pun)!

I showed this to my mother about 15 years ago, and she laughed and moved on. I only recently learned that she thought this was real when she declared Patrick Stewart "a pig" and cited this when I demanded to know why she thought that.

I've watched this video about 6 times and still laugh. I can't get enough of Gervais' convincingly dumbfounded reaction to Patrick's smoothly delivered and utterly pervy lines. Brilliant.
I wasn't a huge fan of Extras, although I can see why it was so popular and why so many people enjoyed it, one thing I loved about the show was seeing actors who you wouldn't really associate with comedy, play charactertures of themselves, giving away it seems their weird habits, beliefs and mannerisms to great comic effect. It's great writing to see icons such as Ian mckellen, Kate Winslet, Patrick Stewart and many others play these roles.
OMG this was one of the funniest series I'd ever seen being a film crew for the last 20 some odd years. These are the discussions among the camera crew. haha.
I have to say, Patrick Stewart is one of the coolest actors ever. He's an amazing actor that doesn't take himself seriously. He can go from Shakespeare to voicing Avery Bullock on American Dad.

I have watched this countless times over the course of a year or two and every time, a new part becomes my favorite. Currently it is at 3:02. "Yeah, because they've been in the camp for so long". It's just perfect, the way he's justified the actions of the women to make it more plausible and arousing for himself. Sorry to over analyze this, but it's really deep comedy and I think deeper reflection only strengthens the appreciation. And then Gervais' finisher, " can happen". Brilliant.
It's not deep at all but it doesn't make it any less genius.

I would listen to Patrick Stewart's ideas all day long. They all sound brilliant, especially the part with the girls in the helicopter.

My favourite bit is when he asks Ricky if his script has nudity, and he says no so Patrick isn't interested so Ricky says I suppose there could be, so Patrick says male or female, so Ricky says could be either, and again Patrick looks uninterested, but then Ricky says okay only female nudity, and suddenly Patrick perks up all excited. Captain Picard is an acting genius.
