My 2008 P71 with 91,000 miles just had its transmission fail. The car ran like a top and then suddenly boom, lost acceleration and the rpm went through the roof. Limped home with O/D off. Currently at the shop waiting for transmission rebuilt
I agree. The drivetrain is solid, and the cars endure pure hell, which leads to transmission failure. I've had three Crown VICs and never had a transmission problem. My current Crown Vic, which is 2008, racked up 20,000 miles in 10 months, and the transmission shifts just as smooth as butter at 186,000 miles. Update: 10/2024. I have since sold that car with 245k and it was still driving fine. Now I have another one. I got it 2 years ago with 140k now I'm at 194k. I don't drive it as much anymore because I don't want it to reach 200k so quick but it's pretty much already there.
Hows the car doing now? I'm looking at picking one up at 186,000. Always well kept with original parts for any replacements, so I'm looking at keeping the trans fluid and filter changed every 30k miles and keep up with proper maintenance checks, oil changes, etc.
"Transmission bench" has a great series on rebuilding these step by step. Did my '03 Marauder, first automatic I've ever done. Looks like the previous rebuild didn't include checking clutch pack clearances. I had to order "selective" sized parts to get it in spec. A Sonnax servo piston and pin takes care of the overdrive issue.
Ive blown up 4 700r4s in my s10 and im currently on my second th400. Ive had my 03 crown vic for 60,000 miles and ive beat the living shit out of it with no issues. All ive done to it is tires, brakes, oil change, and an aftermarket alternator for my sterio. Them vics are strong as shit guys that 4.6 is indestructible
Yup I've had 9 cvpi's no problems except a water pump once and it was because it had a lot of miles on the pump so of course thing will fail or wear out eventually but I love these cars, best car out there in my opinion
they're not bad transmissions, a lot of people say they are garbage, but really they're well built, they are kinda slushy when you drive them, but they're certainly not the worst automatic transmissions.
You very obviously don't know what you're talking about! I have a 2008 model cvpi that is soon to have a transmission rebuild. The car has 84,000 miles on it and spent most of its life idling during service use in a small town. This was checked via the digital instrument cluster that shows idle hours for service interval monitoring for police departments. Common transmission failure points for these cars are due to valve body cracks and front pump issues that result in poor lubrication and rough shifting. Any transmission shop worth their salt will tell you this. Can you get higher mileage out of them if you drive it very moderately and change the fluid and filter much more frequently than the owner’s manual suggests, yes it is possible. But even with that, there are people on their second and third transmissions in these cars. It is quite common for many people to have issues between 80,000-100,000 miles even after a factory remanufactured replacement or quality rebuild!
1 idle hr equals 33 miles. Look it up 👍👍 so 500 idle hours times 33...there you go. Service/Police vehicles usually get maintained religiously. Yes driven harder than a non-service vehicle but most police cars are maintained at the ford dealership. Spend the money get a vehicle history report and call the police department that owned it and ask where they maintained the vehicle. Once you get that info call the place that maintained it. 8 out of 10 times you can get ALL service records for former police vehicles.
The 4R70W transmission family are the best transmissions ever made. Ford has the best selling trucks for decades because of durability. Ford wouldn't jeopardize that reputation with a half-assed trans.
That's the same thing I say I had to swap mines after I brought it from Ohio highway patrol and towed it back to Chicago if it's always running code 3 then yea it's going to go
I have had my transmission fluid changed three times with a filter change and Lucas stop slip to help it out even though it had no issues and when my cooler transmission failed it overheated three times but since I changed it after it overheated it was the changing of the fluid saved the parts in the transmission and that is why I now suggest people buy the Scan gauge unit from Amazon for 160 bucks to keep an eye on the actual fluid temperature of the transmission and engine and stop if a problem comes about but really only on a police vehicle used or any other vehicle if people really care if you are not the original owner
The only reason you would replace the cooler would be because the transmission is overheating or it is attached to your ac condenser and the ac feels weak
Yeah well I like it as a data link into the OB2 reader live data to keep an eye on everything especially if your gauge Custer is a little off and it will read and clear codes
the 4r70w is the better trans, off road guys and drag racers have known this since day one, however...the 4r70w that came in these (the 4r75w is a total pile of shit) have the shittiest oil cooler of any car made, the cab company i work out of had 3 of these fail just in april...upgrade to a stand alone trans cooler ASAP and youll triple the lifespan of these particular transmissions

just bought an 07 after 4 months trans issue wont move in first still has reverse. I wonder what the common problems are in these trans are. I was told by a guy he thinks torque converter. Idk i wonder what is common on the 07 hopefully the guy does a full rebuild if i pay him. I had a 97 conti and used to do burn outs here and there and thing never missed a beat still shifts good
Now the crown victoria's and grand marquis before 2003 are very suspect to have issues. I know my 96 grand marquis had transmission issues. Which having a custom tune fix part of it, but the torque converters was known for premature failure. I got mines back in 2007 with 84,950 miles on it. Sold it in 2018, endless money pit. But the newer models like yours on up to 2011 was the best built ones. Shift solenoids and accumulator springs was a common problem.
Trick to trans long life is keeping good clean fluid in it and using Mercon 5 not compatible stuff but but real Motorcraft M5. Never use any wont slip products. if the trans needs that its F'ed. And when you get the trans filter replaced (real motorcraft filter) in the pan replace the pan with a ADTR pan that has a dump bolt in it. Once a year dump the pan using the dump bolt. Its very very easy. That will take 5 quarts. I have had 2 CV's and presently on a 2004 MGM LS. I do the dump bolt pan on all of them. Never ever have had an issue with any of them. Every 50-75K miles replace the oil in the diff too. Simple maintenance. if you beat the shit out of the car it will require more hyper maintenance.
I'm picking up my first crown Victoria police P7B interceptor next weeks with 59k miles it's a X California long Beach patrol car , Can you get the police maintenance for them ? Thank you .
Got over 200k on an '04 CVPI that I bought in 2007, highway miles mostly, no transmission issues in 12 years with 135k+ of my driving, I'm the 1 and only driver. Have had recently addressed the 'recall' issue (missed out it was for 05 to 11) for the steering shaft corrosion, paid out of pocket.
I have a 96 civilian that works perfectly, with regular transmission maintenance every 25k.with no abuse my car looks and drives better than most used cars and is more reliable. My friend has a 97 town car that he just beats to death but still runs just fine so but a newer fwd auto wouldn't last him a day driving like that.
A 2003 and older 4R70W is not compatible with a 2010 Crown Victoria because they require the 4R75E with 2 speed sensors such as the Turbine Shaft Speed and Output Speed sensors.
As far as autos go not bad but they really are the weakest link of the whole setup aside from the intake manifold. If you have the patience to manual swap a vic and then put a better manifold on it will run forever
dude just wants to show the internet his car. I daily a crown vic, im a mechanic, and I can tell you these transmissions are not good. Dude doesnt know anything and you can tell.
Any model Vic 92-2011. I once test drove a PI Vic and trans was shot. It got to 55 and just went would not go further started going down and RPMs were revved up. But I also had a police interceptor and it was perfect with 205k miles and rolling. It all depends on who had it and what abuse and maintenance they put on it. But I'd get a civilian Vic lx or Grand Marquis or even Lincoln Towncar. all are cheap and all are great cars same engine and trans, just buy one from the elderly or a mechanic and you got a winner👌
Hi. I have to tell you some facts. Your all wrong. The 70W is way way better than the 75. A thousand tranny rebuilders are not wrong, these 75s suck majorly. It's not even worth a new transmission or a rebuilt. They don't even use steel check balls , there PLASTIC! WTF so upsetting. The parts, like the drum inside are pot metal. Do you know what that is? Is garbage can formula , literally, the same stuff that the old metal garage cans were made out of, before your days. You trying to justify this and that doesn't change the truth. The facts are these are probably the worst transmissions, maybe ever. It has nothing to do with what your talking about. Stay away from the 75. Years 07-10 I believe. Sooooo many problems !!! Gosh darn it Ford. You let's us all down, America down. Just darn it. 🤯😩😣😱
SilverRidgeRamblin I agree, the previous owner did not put a magnet back into the trans pan, however the transmissions have a few failure points such as the direct drive drum can crack and overheat the clutch packs.
Lol... ALL the people I know with Panther trans problems, have CIVILIAN vehicles. The trans IS a poor design, and there is some debacle on why Ford hasn't recalled and/or changed the design. In this day and age, you can find this info at a click of a button! FYI: Doing research is how I found this particular bit of misinformation. 😏
