    3 things;
    1- take care of them, and they'll definitely last.
    2- don't get one that's been molested by cletus.
    3- on a crown vics worst day, it's waaaaay better than working on a northstar Cadillac.

      Don't buy any Crown Victoria interceptor from Minnesota unless it's a well maintained detective car as they were typically in much better shape! Highway patrol and or local police 🚓 and the Sheriff's squad cars were heavily abused 99% of the time in Minnesota with rare exceptions of the guy who pampered his car!!! Minnesota is RUST capital of the state the USA 🇺🇲 as they like dumping salt 🧂 all over their roads as well during the winter ❄️ 🥶 months!!! Do your research!!! Don't believe car salesman's, auctioneer's or MOST private partie's either way about anything you buy either way! If you don't know what too look for great if you don't have your trusted mechanic do it not their's because they will lie through their teeth!!!

    Just picked up a 2011 P7B with 148k on the clock for $1800 and it's in excellent shape. I got lucky. Going to get a cheapo maaco paint job as this one is black with white doors and hood/truck and I want that stealth look. Might copy your grey color. Looks great!

    I've owned 5, still have 2 ('04 & '10 cvpi's) and bidding on an '05 with 91,000 miles. These cars will get you where you wanna go, regardless if they're falling apart or not. They're extremely resilient, easy to work on and many affordable aftermarket parts.
    You are wrong about the rear axle shafts wearing evenly. The driver's side always wears a groove into the shaft near the bearing, long before the passenger's side. Just rebuilt my 2010 cvpi's rear. Still got me across country before I began the repair.

      Don't get me wrong they have a lot of little issues. But I beat the crap out of mine. And I still would be ok driving it cross country no problem. I might get a 2nd one if I can find a decent one for cheap. (Which is hard to do.) I got mine in 2019? Only cost me $1300 it was no show car but what people are asking right now is outrageous. I probably could get close to $4k out of it.

      If the car has the open rear axle, it's the passenger side axle that always goes first, due to that being the wheel that gets the power from the engine.

    I just bought at auction for $1300.00 my "new" 2007 P7. 197,000 miles, no codes, and almost new Goodyear Eagles, runs and drives great. It was an Elmore County Idaho Sheriff's car.

    I have owned several Panther cars (seven I believe) during the past 30+ years. I have been a municipal fleet services mechanic for 41 years and retired last year. Crown Vics were by far the most reliable vehicle I ever worked on. I currently own a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with 238,000 miles, and a recently purchased 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis with 36,000 miles. It is in absolutely mint condition, and I paid $9000 for it. It was worth every penny and more. I have replaced many intake manifolds, but have only had to replace one on one of my own cars. I believe prolonged idling contributes to intake manifold failure.
    As for the blend door actuator, I've had three fail on my own cars. I have never replaced one on a city owned car, the job just takes too much time, so they were sent out to a private shop. I live in the Phoenix, AZ area, where we don't need heat, so I never replaced one on my own cars as well. You can remove the glove box, passenger side airbag, and the duct to the far right air vent, make a chisel out of a two foot long piece of rebar, stick it through the air bag opening, and break off all three of the little tabs that hold it in place, and it will drop down, where you can remove the wires from it, and take it out. Then you can jam a piece of wood or something similar between the little arm on the blend door and the ductwork case, and jam it into either the full A/C or full heat position. I put mine in the full A/C position, so I have A/C but no heat. It's a $1000+ job to have it replaced at a shop, because the entire dash has to come out, and it will just fail again. I no longer turn the heat on in my current cars, to prevent the blend door actuators from stripping out.
    I have seen a couple of odometers fail, but it's not actually the odometers that fail, it's the LEDs and/or the brightness switch. The rotary knob that controls the brightness of the dash lights tends to fail. That switch has partially failed on both my cars. The odometers still work, but I don't actually have to have them. I use a GPS unit, and the fuel gauges don't fail. Yes a failed odometer will affect resale value, but I have no intention of selling either one of my cars as long as they are repairable within reason. I plan to drive them for the rest of my life. If you have an odometer fail, notice if any other green dash lights also failed. If they did, try replacing the rotary dash light dimmer control first.
    I have never seen a rear axle fail on a Panther car, and I've seen them with over 400,000 miles with no major repairs. Since I drive Grand Marquis instead of Crown Vics, if I ever need to replace my rear axle, I'll have to make sure I find one with the 2.73 final drive gearing. These axles are plentiful, and can easily be rebuilt, so you are probably better off having one rebuilt than getting one from a junkyard that may not last long. I strongly suggest changing the rear axle fluid every 30,000 miles.
    I have never seen a problem with gas tanks rusting or steering issues on 2003 and newer models. I live in southern AZ, where things just do not rust. Neither one of my cars have even surface rust anywhere on them, including underneath.
    There is one problem not mentioned that WILL happen on ALL Panther cars that have rear air suspension. The air bags will eventually leak, and the rear of the car will be sitting almost on the ground. The air bags are somewhat expensive to replace, I have replaced them with coil springs on a couple of my cars with coil springs, which only cost around $200, if you do it yourself, and it is a permanent fix. It does not affect the ride or handling.
    Many of the things mentioned are far more likely to happen on an ex police car than a civilian Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, or Lincoln Town car. As for whether these cars are still worth buying, ABSOLUTELY. I wouldn't even consider buying a new car with all their TRASH technology and insane prices. I just paid $9000 cash for a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis with 36,000 miles on it from an elderly couple who were the original owners. It had a clean Carfax, and they had a huge stack of maintenance receipts for it. I was a mechanic for 41 years, and I gave the car a good going over. I expect this car to last the rest of my life. This is the car I want to drive. There is no new vehicle out there that I have any desire to own or drive. Millions of these cars were made, and both new and used parts are plentiful, and most of them are cheap. Also, for a mechanically inclined person, these cars are simple enough that things can easily be rigged, like I did with my blend door actuator. With proper maintenance they tend to last well past 300,000 miles. There is a video on TH-cam where a guy had one that lasted a MILLION miles, with its original engine, transmission, and rear axle. Would you rather pay under $10,000 for a nice low mileage Panther car, or $50,000 for a new car that will be lucky to last 100,000 miles?
    I easily get 30+ mpg on the highway in my Grand Marquis, with its automatic overdrive, cruise control, and 2.73 rear axle. I wouldn't buy a junker unless you bare a mechanic and have a large supply of parts and parts cars, but a decent one can still be kept going for 20+ years for a whole lot less than buying a POS new car that is designed to be disposable.

    I just bought a 2005 Crown Vick Intecepter 140 thousand miles .It's very clean runs really great .I've only had it two weeks . It took me two years to find an interceptor . Four thousand dollars best money I ever spent .
    Why would you buy a Toyota ???? Ford all the way !!!!

    • @silicon212
      @silicon212 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2005 was a transition year, and there are two different ones - earlier ones use 28 count spline axles (as with anything before 2005), and later ones (from Dec 7, 2004) have 31 spline axles and an improved electrical system. They're all good and the later ones are better - mine has a June 28, 2005 born on date and many of the factory installed parts have 2006 MY part numbers on it. A lot of people hate on this year due to a DBW issue that was resolved one month into the MY (drive by wire, brand new on this car in 2005), along with that passenger side quarter panel antenna but I happen to like that, and my '05 is bar none the best car I've ever owned. I do think the newer model years (2008+) lack in build quality next to these older ones.

    I bought a nice 2011 from a dealer and found that the climate door and the radiator fan control were broken. As I was getting pissed I remembered the 30-day warranty sticker on the window. So the issues were fixed for free! They would not fix the rear window defrost because it was not covered under drivetrain warranty. I had the rear window replaced for about $200, that solved the issue. The trunk was leaking, but when I had a new trunk kock assembly installed, it stopped leaking.

    I rap on the odo with my fist to bring it back on. This summer I’ll reflow the solder connections.
    I pulled the dash out to fix the hvac mode door hinge ( zip ties). PTFE grease on the blend door gears while there. Finished it as the first snow of 2020/21 fell.

    I do non-emergency medical transportation, and the company I work for uses nothing but these cars, and out of the 6 we have on the road, we are down to 2 cars with overdrive left.

    • @flyer2359x
      @flyer2359x  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much the same. Theoretically a cream puff and well kept civilian model wouldn't have seen a bunch of 0-60s, idling etc and as long as it was maintained should technically speaking be better than most P71s, but it isn't always true.
