  • This is a longer tutorial about why you should undervolt your Video card.
    The basics are to lower you State 7 Core voltage to one that is just high enough that the system does not crash and runs stable in games.
    The reason we undervolt out video card is because the default voltages that AMD set for their video cards in most cases are much higher than needed making the card use more power and run hotter than needed.
    If you have any questions, drop a comment.
    If this helped you, please leave this video a like, thanks.

    So I recently upgraded my gt 1030 to an RX 480 and when I play GTA I get 25 fps but when I had my gt 1030 I would get way better fps than my RX 480 and I can't seem to find out the problem. I think it might be caused by having a 6 pin connecter in the GPU when it requires an 8pin connector but I'm not sure.

      my guess is that you have a big CPU bottleneck.
      I would look at upgrading your CPu mobo and ram to something like the i5 10400f, 16GB DDR4 and a cheap H410 motherboard.
      If you dont have the budget for that. I would just check your CPU usage when running GTA 5.
      and yes, you should probably get a 6-8pin PCIe adapter, that may fix the issues. but most likely you will still want to upgrade your cpu.

    In my opinion, the whole purpose of undervolting is to dramatically increase performance per watt ratio; even if it means sacrificing some raw performance, and this video is a great example.
    For example, I'm running my vintage Fermi, a very hot card, at -50MHz core clock and -180mV undervolt. Temperatures went down from ~90c to low 70c! That's a reduction of almost 20c at a cost of ~5% lower performance!
    And since I play at either 30 or 60FPS locked with vsync, the GPU remains at around ~60c most of the time.

    • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      :D good explanation.
      the whole undervolting concept can help either low your temps or improve performance if you are thermal throttling,
      not to mention safer temps can lead to a longer life span

    • @danieldelillo
      @danieldelillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed... I got my RX 480 down to a 73W GPU power limit at the cost of 7% performance, but that requires max tuning and testing all the power states. With a i7-4770s, 16GB ram and RX 480 undervolted I'm drawing around 155-160W at the wall while gaming.

      Just remember:
      Clock speed affects fps,
      Voltage affects power consumption = heat.
      So if you want higher fps, you can run higher clock speed, which will require a bit higher voltage.

I'm currently running a RX 480, and my Clock is 1266 max and I'm tinkering with the settings still, but undervolting around 1000 mV. Might go down more, not sure. • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      glad it helped.
      Its simple, you stop lowering voltage when your system crashes :), some cards can run with a lower voltage. i just put 1020mv as a sane voltage so that it would work for most peoples cards. but as i mention, the silicon quality of each card varies.
      So you can try lowering the voltage -10mv each time. some games will need a higher voltage than others. if you are happy with your temps at 1000mv, you can also just leave it at that.
      Its up to you :)
      make sure you stress test the card after you make voltage changes

    @riccardooliveri3028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hey! First off, I must say this tutorial is very nice and detailed, it's hard to find one like yours nowadays! :)
    Also, here's the biggest problem I've got with my PC:
    I bought my (XFX) RX 570 8GB a couple months ago and immediately noticed that it usually goes from 55°C to almost 90°C (from 131°F to 194°F) whenever I open any "demanding" game (Warzone, Mafia Definitive Edition, Rainbow Six, Fortnite, etc.)
    Temperatures also change immediately as if the chip went from Idle to Max temps in a matter of seconds, so I googled a way to lower the temperatures and stumbled upon your video.
    Another problem is that my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics (i3 9100F, can't see anything if I connect my screen to my motherboard) and for that reason, I'm scared of undervolting and/or toasting my GPU.
    So... what would you suggest to get a significant temperature drop to about 79-85°C (174°F-185°F) instead of that absurd 90°C (194°F)?

    • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ok, first of all, sounds like your card is just one of those hot runner. aka just runs hot out of the box.
      second, I would watch the latest Undervolting guide I made where I show you some settings you can copy and try.
      to clarify, undervolting in the AMD software is not a permanent thing, the settings go away when you remove them or restart your pc.
      If you want the settings to stick each time you load a game, you need to set up a game profile.
      So I would try copying the settings I put in my latest video, and see how that goes. If your system crashes/freezes with those settings set in your game profile for COD warzone. then inscrease the voltages a bit.
      Also make sure to set a more aggressive fan curve either way, in either MSI afterburner or in the AMD drivers.
      1. copy undervolt settings
      2. if game crashes, bump up the voltages a bit +20mv on states 3-7 then load up your game and try again.
      3. make sure you have a more aggressive fan curve set
      you can only damage your GPU or make it toast if you run it at 85c all the time or increase the voltages past the stock 1150mv.
      I think i explain that in this video as well.

    • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it can improve the life of the gpu by reducing the temps.
      For your situation because temperature is not an issue, you can leave the stock clocks and try dropping the core voltage first to 1100mv then -20mv until you find one that is stable just before it crashes. So you are running the lowest STABLE voltage on your gpu.

    Hello, a question: If I modify a profile by raising eg. the speed of the fans, every time I turn off the pc it does not resume the changes but I always have to load the previously saved profile manually. Is there any way to make him save it somehow?

    • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the only way you can make these settings apply automatically is by setting a game profile which means any time your game application starts up it will apply the undervolt/fan settings inside of that profile.
      otherwise, as you know, the settings will just reset after pc restart.

    Hey um wanted to know and I'm afraid to mess with this settings, but my card which is ASUS RX 580 4Gb runs at 89°C while heavy gaming and it gets really hot.. Also I don't have a good airflow inside of my case so could you suggest me a setting that'll give the same performance while gaming and also maintaining temperatures around 70°C ?

    • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, good question.
      1. its normal to feel "scared" or hesitant about doing something you've never done before or don't fully understand.
      2. Yes its safe to do this, the settings i would recommend if you really want lower temperatures are as follows:
      State 7: CORE CLOCK: 1200Mhz Voltage: 950mv
      And state 6- state 2, just lower core a bit so it is smaller than state 7 but bigger than state 2.
      For voltage, just drop the mv by -10mv each state.
      running 1200mhz on state 7 for your game will drop temps.
      Otherwise, if that is still too hot, try:
      1150mhz Core @920mv for state 7.
      But i would try the first suggestion of 1200mhz @950mv.
      If it crashes, increase the voltage by+ 10mv then test again.

      you can use different settings on your AMD RX 500 series gpu.
      The reason it would crash is if your core voltage is not high enough for the given core clock you want to run,
      If you want settings to copy for better temps,
      Copy these:

    • @AleksandrsBrodie
      @AleksandrsBrodie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I am not sure.
      I would try undervolting the gpu, maybe run 1280mhz at 1000-1050mv for state 7.

      Also use a program like msi afterburner to monitor your temps

      Hell ya man, its great :) glad you tried it :) remember if the system crashes or freezes, either 1. Lower Core clock or 2. Increase core voltage until it does not crash.

      This means you need to increase your core voltage to run the same clocks as mine.
      When the gpu crashes it means your core clock is either too high for the voltage you are trying to run, or your voltage is too low for your core clock to run stable, that is why your system crashed.
