Hunting with Goshawks in Essex

- Upon arrival at the wood, all of the Goshawks were on their talons. The evocative ringing of brass bells echoed through the Oaks. Scampering around the dead brown leaves, fallen branches and at our feet were three HPR’s (Hunt, Point & Retrieve). One German Wire-haired Pointer bitch Jess, aged 7 and two rescued German Short-haired Pointer dogs, Baxter and Teddy, around 6 & 4 respectively. Scenting wherever their noses told them to go, these dogs were the epitome of the excitement before a hunt we can all relate to. They were all individually fitted with an audible Pointer collar that bleeps when the dog either stops or goes on point. A bleep that signals to the Austringers where the dog and quarry are. Logically, when hunting mute brown dogs amongst thick and decaying brown cover, you need to know where they are and knowing where your mark is, giving you time to get in the correct position and vantage point to get the best chance of a successful flight. This allows the luxury of not crashing about randomly in search of game, but to become more calculated and intelligent in the pursuit of both fur and feather.
The Austringers, Lee Rush, Sid Nicholas and the President of the British Falconers Club, Nick Kester, were hunting a combination of youth, experience, male and female Goshawks. This flight consisted of Lee's imported hen Goshawk Bel, of whom he bucks tradition and hunts her on appetite rather than weight. She weighed around 2lb 5oz to 2lb 9oz, whereas Sid was flying a hen eyass Goshawk called Gossip (2lb 8oz) and Nick, his 12 yr old tiercel (male) called Baldrick, 1lb 10 1/2oz.
Experience has taught me that no two days sport are ever the same and today was no different. Quickly, I realised that I was amongst a wealth of experience. The Goshawks were extremely fit and fitted with the latest telemetry and GPS equipment. Everyone had radios so if one was looking for a bird the others were aware of his location and progress. At first I didn’t appreciate the value of the bleep collars on the Pointers but after the first point, I learned why they were essential. I am used to what a bleep means with my ferret finders, but this bleep gave me a completely different reaction. Every time thereon, when I heard the bleep my adrenalin peaked and my heart beat increased. Part of the appeal was the pleasure at morphing into the natural world. Witnessing the superior hunting relationship between the dogs, their owners and the Goshawks. Without the Pointers, many opportunities at game would have been lost although the scenting conditions were as poor as the visibility on the journey down.
To start the day off, Nick performed a traditional toast. We walked through the woodland watching the Pointers hunting for scent. Unfortunately, the Pheasants weren’t sitting tight, instead opting to painfully march off into the distance. This was my first time experiencing Goshawks hunting and so I had nothing to compare it too and should be remembered that way. The F1 of the Hawk world were as beautiful as they were fast and agile. The pheasants may not have sat tight but one rabbit did.
Teddy put up a rabbit. It galloped down a ride towards freedom. Inside a split second I got to experience the true worth of a Goshawk. As fast as it's scut could travel, this rabbit was doomed from the start. The moment Sid saw it, Gossip was off and after a few strikes sank her razor sharp talons into the rabbit; it succeeded beside some Laurel game cover. Sid was off. Like Usain Bolt, once Gossip was off his fist he was in hot pursuit. I thought this was a bit manic, but after Sid explained, it all made perfect sense. Rabbits and especially Hares can do a lot of damage to a bird with their powerful legs. In order to minimize potential injuries, Sid quickly located bird and rabbit, dispatching the rabbit before allowing Gossip to have a few pulls at her prize before she hopped back onto his fist.

No sir, it is not silly to me. Please keep these traditions alive so that others, such as I, can learn more about your occupation to make a living here the U.S.
they don't call it silly in the same way ...my friend! when I went to school in England I went hawking, these boys do it serious! about half of the falconry birds up north and Scotland are eagles....as you know keeping a hawk is one thing eagles are far more work! they do sound light hearted about it ….they take it seriously!
edit if you want a real trip...go at night with owlers, that will give you an appreciation of falconers....

I think its awesome how the bird does a call after its kill, kind of like him saying "Yeah I got this kill, no big deal!"
I love how each falconer had their own method of taking back their birds away from their kills, they know how their individual bird works and learned about them. That amazing.
It's seeing these birds hunt in their natural habitat and great to hear Sid saying he's out at least 5 days a week with his. Great upload, Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic, i had a goshawk fly past me in a pine plantation chasing a blackbird, was amazing watching it zigzag through the closely planted trees.

Goshawks and Harris hawks are probably the 2 best species used in falconry. At least in my opinion.

people say these traditions are cruel i personally don't because the animals would probably rather haver a longer life and die to a goshawk than going to somewhere to be mass killed and you could say I'm bias as I'm a hawk but that just me and my other fellow people who want to be falconers and most importantly falconers loved the job guys great work with the birds caught great loved watching
Man, compared to any falcon or hawk, the fastest acceleration is from the goshawk, their long tail, and short wings in the shape of a half sphear really gives them that amazing speed. Did you guys know, that the peragrin falcon with its bullet shaped body, wings specialized in cutting through air, combined with a bomb dive technique make it the fastes animal on the face of the earth, with a more recent record of a max of 200mph?? Aproximatly 300+kmh!!! Even crazier is a duck that can range from speeds of 75 to 100mph, who knew a duck can go such a speed!!
the peregrine falcon is the fastest bird alive, their dive bomb attack kills their prey in almost an instant

Nice to see Goshawks flown in the style and tradition one would expect to see, the dog's worked well especially Jess the wire haired pointer, just a thought it would of been great to get a chef to prepare what the hawks caught and the falconer's eat it maybe next time....
what's an average days flying time 4 to 5 hours on and off ? love watching Hawking video's the birds are Magnificent and watching them in flight is awesome.
I've found knowing how your bird feels can tell you more than scales when I've gone against the feel I've spent time loads of time looking for the hawks I'm sure you 've been there

Silly tradition? Falconers are on high demand at airports to make sure geese and other big birds won't collide with the planes. More often than not, it's their hard work that makes sure we can enjoy our flight.

Amazing, I am not a hunter as I hate using guns against animals, one-sided, but this type of hunting is amazing, the bird and dog do the hunting, no guns needed...

Which ones easier to train. Gos hawk or harris hawk???
every raptor is different, however with just trust or your everyday hawking, harris hawks are easier, they are much more social.
but for goshawks, if you plan to be much more serious and want to just catch more in general, goshawks are better.

You’d think the prey would hear that bell a mile away.
These birds are natural predators in this land. Would be great to see a resident wild population in these woods, but probably still a bit sparse in south east England. Starting to get healthy in old growth forests like the Dean though.
