    Sorry guys...i totally forget to mention on this video ,after you sand your project ,wash it with soap and lots of water and don't forget to wash and rinse too the surrounding area so you have a nice and clean environment before you start varnishing., only if you can , otherwise if you cannot use water because of whatever situation you are in, so the best thing to do is use a bucket of water and lots of rags, dip your rags in the bucket of water and use it to wipe down the dust on your project ,changing the the dirty water on your bucket as you go along.

    Instructions good but I don't like that you spread all the sanding dust into the sea. The chemicals in that dust are absolutely not good for the environment... And you should use a dust mask too

    Leon said this was a 2-part varnish, but what brand and mix ratio? Thanks! ( maybe I missed it )

    • @leoncaputolan
      @leoncaputolan  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello mate... actually this is 3 part varnish, I said in the video two part because I am used to another urethane varnish that I use a while back ..this particular varnish I used here is called Awlbrite this has to be mixe together with its converter and brushing activator..the mixing ratio is
      2 part: Base J3005
      1 part: Converter J3006
      1/2 part : Brushing activator A0031.
      Hope this helps....

    What are your all your sanding steps and do you do any more sanding after applying the varnish or primer or clear coat?

    • @leoncaputolan
      @leoncaputolan  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We sanded this capping rail with 320 grit sandpaper prior to varnishing, this is only a top up coat just before our summer season start...

    Hey Leon, not much you don't know about varnishing hey? I think you must have varnished 100s of kilometers of capping rail by now.... haha - good skills bud.

    • @leoncaputolan
      @leoncaputolan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Marky, you are probably right ,after all this years of varnishing this rails 100 kilometers is about right hahaha, i have learned this from you, i used to be your assistant and fell asleep while holding a pot of varnish hahaha, that one is for the history books.

      Haha Leon, you were a seasoned yachtsman by the time you joined Big D - don't think there's much I taught you - more like the other way around. I do vaguely remember that incident - must have been hungover from Soggy's - or the boredom of watching paint dry..... haha

    What sort of varnish are you using?

    • @leoncaputolan
      @leoncaputolan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Awlbrite... It's a three component acrylic urethane a product by Awlgrip.

  • @larrywilliams5313
    @larrywilliams5313 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Use a maroon colored scotch bright pad on your last coat of varnish and rinse clean then tape off and use Awlgrip J3005 clear coat system 3 part and it will give it a bullet proof coating that will make your varnish last up to 3years before you have to re - coat rather than every 6 months.use a new utopia badger brush for perfect results.

    • @leoncaputolan
      @leoncaputolan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate...yahh i do that sometimes, just scratch it with that maroon scotch brite,..one thing i forget to mention on this video is actually thoroughly wash the area to be varnish with soap.

      Very helpful video Leon. Cleaning brushes is the most dreaded part of a painting project for me, my brushes always end up too stiff or tacky for next project and I throw them away. Then I was buying cheap brushes to throw away after the project,but cheap brushes as you know do not give the finish you desire. Again, thank you for sharing and I think you may be saving me a lot of money!

    Hey Leon, can you tell us the steps for mixing and the products used in the Awlbrite system in this video. Is it in fact a 2 part or 3 part. Do you use a base or a primer. Thanks for the vert informative videos you make

    Wow, nice video, after 3 years in industry I still have to learn varnishing..
    I wanna ask.. Which sand paper do you use first? Is it 380 at all times?
    I also know people use heat gun to remove old varnish, can you explain please, when should you use sending and when to use heat gun?
    😅

    • @leoncaputolan
      @leoncaputolan  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi..it all depends on you project, if you are just putting on a coat over the existing varnish 320 to 400 grit sandpaper is good...but to use heatgun? That is when you are stripping all the old varnish back to the original wood and start over again ...that will be a totally different topic, soon I will make a video about it, stay tuned.
