Phase Testing and Cutting for Underground Cut Around

A Major Underground crew from Centerpoint tests phases and cuts existing 15kV distribution lines for a cut around in a new manhole located in a substation just outside Houston, Texas. Host utility: Centerpoint Energy

We usually get Phasing after by ringing the cable out. I feel way safer about phases when I can hear an audible confirmation from the guy on the other end.

Why are they leaving the manhole to cut the cable when the cable is dead?

high voltage cables tend to have residual current

Ahhh. I see. The most voltage I work with is 480V... and I don't really like doing that...

Safety. If the cable happened to be hot or a mistake was made you dont want to be anywhere near it

A spikeing tool would be easier, and in the event of cutting a live cable more cost effective.
