    I always remove the handle bar of the jack after lifting the car. That way, you wont trip over it. Would be bad to fall due to the handle bar and also (unintentionally) kicking the lift from under the car.

    Great video Cassie! I truly appreciate how well you did that job as well as your knowledge of tires and such. We call them snow tires here in the US. I live in South Alabama now so they aren't needed at all. It's snowed maybe twice in the last 30 yrs here. It melts in a few short hours. Your dog is cute. Please take care and be well.

    Good to see you're keeping safe out there. While winter tyres are not a legal requirement here in the UK (personally, I think they should be) I always fit them. We don't always get snow in the south where I live; if we do (or if we get sleet), it often melts, turns to sludge and then re-freezes. The first time I used them, I couldn't believe the difference they made. I'd rather drive my front wheel drive car in winter with winter tyres, than a 4x4 without them.

    Here in the US we don't have the summer and winter tire change. Laws. We usually use all weather tires. Some times folks may use straight snow tires depending on where they live. Where I am at in Southern Mississippi. We have rain, wind, and clear. Very rarely do we get snow here.

    I keep a 3' (1 meter ish) breaker bar with a 3" (75mm ish) extension and 19 mm socket in all the cars for tire changing. I have a wife and 2 Daughters and I know they do not have the upper body strength to always loosen the lug nuts esp if somebody used an impact gun on them.
    I use Never seize on the lugs.

  • @annhay4572

    Yep, use never-seize on the lug bolts or nuts, not oil. But also you need to tighten the lugs with a torque wrench (never use an impact gun!) ... every vehicle has VERY specific tightening tension or torque. Under-tightening is obviously dangerous since the lugs can come loose and a wheel come off while driving ... over tightening is also dangerous and can strip the threads and again cause the tire to come off while driving. Get a "click" torque wrench and use that. From your friendly retired truck mechanic. 🙂

  • @charlesb4267
    @charlesb4267 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cassie, I had no idea VW was using wheel bolts which means I haven't paid much attention to that brand of car nor ever worked on them. North American vehicles have used the stud and lug nut setup for a long time as have the Japanese. However farm equipment is different as a lot of implement wheels are mounted just like your car and oh is that ever fun when the hub is up in the air and have to lift a larger heavy tire and try to get that first wheel bolt in !. That doesn't mean North America got it right either for many years when they got this crazy notion to install left hand threaded studs on the left side of a vehicle ( normal right hand thread on the right side of the same vehicle ) . They started doing that in the 1930's and took them until into the 1980's before all manufacturers quit with that crap and the oldest highway tractor I have has left hand studs on the left steer axle hub as an example of that era. A friend of mine had brought his classic dodge car to a tire shop a few years ago and the young buck changing the tires on it twisted off or mangled the first few wheel studs on the left side before an older mechanic realized what was going on, your every day shop just doesn't deal with things like that anymore. Anyway thought you might get a chuckle out of that.

  • @charlesholland-keen2222
    @charlesholland-keen2222 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Winter tyres are optional in the U.K. as we do not often get a lot of snow now. Ice can be a problem though. Most main roads are treated with salt, sand or a mix. The main problems are caused by motorists not having experience of these weather conditions resulting in collisions and other mishaps. Do you replace your worn tyres with new ones or get them remoulded ? Nice demo and good advice. Stay safe.

    @donbrackenreg2270 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I too would add my comments to others who have suggested using a torque wrench. If you overtighten the wheel bolts (especially with the breaker bar), the bolts can literally stretch, then they either break, or, because they are now a different thread pattern, can screw themselves off. Every car has different torque settings, and a good tyre shop has a huge book with every car's torque settings, so you can get it right.

  • @pharmmech

    Just a hint kneel, in front of the tire, rest your elbows on your knees to lift the tires with your arms. Gives you leverage and won't hurt your back.

    • @wssides
      @wssides 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or even place your cross wrench partly under the tire and lift and move to walk them in. Ideal was the Citroen with a small hole in the rim and in the wheel hub. Slide in the bar. Lift, push, rotate to line up and install the bolts.

  • @cadifan

    But when I change my wheels, I don't Jack the car up at the jackpoints, but at the front side where the bolt of the front lower control arm bush goes through the subframe. With the bolt head in the cup of the jack it self. And at the rear, some where where the rear axle is mounted. Why??? So I don't damage the paint on the car, and causing a rust spot.

    Yep great vids. You could open a driving/truck school down the track, and teach truck legislation and driving.

    Why not put a piece of tape round the right size socket on the wheel nut spanner? Saves a bit of time! Also why don't you have to torque the wheel nuts to a correct figure? I thought this was mandatory especially with alloy wheels. Keep making great videos and stay safe and well.

    Use one of the tires you took off as spare until you get new ones in the summer!

    Hi Cassie, loving your videos really interesting, just wondered what the legal tread depth for a car tyre is in Sweden those tyres you removed looked fairly worn out 😂

      The tires I removed were... pretty done yes 🤣
      That's why I said in the video that I should have changed tires weeks ago, haha. But life came in the way I guess 😅
      Thanks for watching!

    This is great, you change tires just like I do🙂with the veichle as low as possible, but seriously you need a cordless impact gun. Lol nice bald summer tyres.
