People always crap on Nu metal and metalcore/deathcore but they will always be one of my favourite genres, I do listen to other metal as well though and rock
Always down for Bell Witch, Mizmor, Conan, Bongripper, Yob but I also fuck with Napalm Death, Nails, Enforced and Krallice so you know fuck it good riffs are good riffs.
I prefer sludge over most doom metal, but the thing about sludge is that it has the same problem as nu metal being a lack of audible consistency: Some bands are more hardcore or almost thrashy compared to doom metal, while others have obvious doom vibes, but sound like death doom or something than sludge. I generally like most of it, but then you might as well say sludge is it's own thing than a sub of doom, or acknowledge there's "doom sludge" and "sludgecore." Many hate that separation. Like, lets be honest, Metallica and Slayer are definitely very different. Metallica leans more into prog/hard rock compared to Slayer being death-metal-without-growls. But what do they have in common that makes them thrash? Metal's density with punk's ferocity = thrash. The only commonality among sludge bands, sometimes, is the "guitars sound like dying elephants having distorted orgasms." And that's a compliment.
One of my hottest takes is that black metal became infinitely more interesting in the 3rd wave (I will give a lot of credit to Emperor, Ulver, and Dissection, though), specifically after bands like Deathspell Omega and Blut Aus Nord started experimenting with dissonance and avant-garde elements and composition.
I would place black metal in my top five. But I do agree that it does something different than other metal genres. The closet genre I would compare it to is ambient. In that is all about the vibe and the feeling that it creates
5:55 I am ambivalent on this. I love Raw Black Metal, especially if it is truly raw. Like scroll Metall Archives, find a solo progect from early 90's that has few demos, and those demos slaps. But I don't like when bands intentionally try to sound raw. Also, I personally prefer Atmospheric or Symphonic Black and they are far away from Raw, so what? I am a fake fan?
I listen and make black metal, but I don’t think I’m some sort of elitist. I like certain bands, but bm has a huge amount of sub genres so I can’t like it all. I definitely won’t give someone crap for digging dimmu or deaf haven. People like who they like.
Some lukewarm takes Spiritual Healing is one of Death’s best albums, if not their best Blackwater park is overrated Meshuggah’s Destroy Erase Improve is the “best” 90s album 90% of Nu Metal is mid Dance of Death is a top 3 Maiden album
Agree with your thoughts on these takes, except for the Maiden Priest take and the Antrax take. I feel like Anthrax although really fun, never quite reach the level of quality or impact the other big 4 bands achieved (let’s not forget their Nu metal era also..). Absolutely agree with you about Death’s Sound Of Perseverance being one of the all time greats
It’s not that breakdowns are boring, it’s that most bands known for breakdowns have boring breakdowns. To me personally the best ones are from the grindcore genre (especially Napalm Death, Insect Warfare and Wormrot) and some bands like Mastodon are also great at it IMO. Edit: Add Pig Destroyer to the list of grindcore breakdowns. They’re also great.
NGL slipknot is kinda mid... But regarding metal solo placement, I kinda agree in that it needs to be mixed up.. I have the ability to accurately skip to the intro of most solos for most bands I listen to... And they almost always start around the 3 minute mark. Just goes to show, whether purposefully of subconsciously there's a lot of placement similarities.
Have you tried Metal's everythingist Devin Townsend.? He will have a go at multiple genres & sometimes all in one song. Try Genesis from the Empath 😊 album.
My apparent hot take is that Slipknot got better after the first 2 albums. I don't like any Slipknot, but I find both self titled and Iowa to be unlistenably bad. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say they're two of the worst albums recorded, not even in metal, but in all of music. I would rather listen to The Shaggs.
I'm not annoyed by people hating on doom metal. I'm annoyed when people who do it have obviously never listened to it. They maybe listened to two minutes of Dopesmoker and suddenly are convinced they know everything there is to know about doom.
God Hates Us All is way worse than Diablous in Musica. At least Diablous can be funny bad, GHUA is just boring as hell. Anything Ronnie James Dio did just isn't all that tbh, there's like 50 trad metal bands I'd rather put on before Dio or Rainbow or even Dio-era Sabbath. Bolt Thrower is easily the most overrated band in metal. Great band, but goddamn the straight up cult they have as a fanbase is annoying af. It's the Teutonic 3, not the German Big Four, Tankard sucks. Deal with it.
Isn't black metal more poser because they sounded like that because they were DIY, hence didn't have the equipment to do it? It's like saying you can't afford a good mic, so you shouldn't use a good mic. Creator: "Damn, I'm good at bass, but suck at guitar. I guess imma record low strings for one and record high strings for the other." Elitists: "That's a new genre! It has to be that way, all the time... ONLY!!!"
Hot takes Death Metal is mostly boring Anthrax and megadeth does not belong in the big 4. Reign in Blood is below mid. Nu metal, metalcore and deathcore sucks, not real metal.
@@CitizenSnips I love deathcore. But also get where the elitist are coming from. So why should they be a metal band? To me deathcore is its own genre. It's not metal and it's not hardcore
i think the mgeadeth vs metallica feud is dumb.. however. i will say megadeth is by a mile better than metallica, if you like metallica thats great i aint judging but whenever i listen to them i cant help but think of other (better) bands and it leaves me bored. they're like the great value version of metal.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm a trans women, and used to think that doom was boring as fuck. But after I started taking estrogen I got really into it! For real! I'm not joking. And pretty everyone I know who is into doom is a woman. The bands are mostly men though so idk if that actually checks out
100% agree that Judas Priest is overrated. The high pitched squeals Rob does are kinda annoying. Just never really been into that vocal style. They have some really great songs but other than British Steel there’s not a single album that has more than 1 or 2 songs I really like.
I like your explanation of these! I can't comment on everything you've said because it would be way too long. I love black metal but I won't wear the costume. They type o cover of black sabbath is not good, yet I have a type o tattoo on my shoulder (got in 96) Old albums are better for some people because it's reminiscent of the old days. I'm 47, so yeah I'll say I'd rather hear old anthrax, megadeth, sepultura, cannibal corpse, etc than the new 5 finger death punch album. Also, that band has always sucked!
Channels like wyattxhim are doing way more for metal than nik nokturnal
Nik Nocturnal wouldn’t know metal if it came and spit in his face.

High on Fire > Sleep, I love the music from both of the bands but Matt Pike on vocals just absolutely kills it
Yeah, I love Sleep, but High on Fire is way better. Even just on the principle that there’s way more HoF albums than Sleep albums lol.

Tim “Ripper” Owens is an underrated singer. I haven’t listened to his era of Priest but he does an excellent with Halford era songs.
Ripper did some killer vocals with Iced Earth, but I haven't delved much into Ripper era Priest either. Heard a few songs, didn't like them at all.
You need to listen ti Judas Priest - Jugulator right away homie.

Tankard caused pizza thrash, and that’s enough of a reason to hate them
Diabolus is WAY more boring than GHUA. It’s so tepid and dull, all the intensity that Slayer was known for is gone on that album.
Those are all pretty lukewarm takes, though
I love Lamb of God, but do feel the last couple of albums without Chris Adler doesn't hit the same.
Yeah, FFDP and Lamb of God got me into Pantera, since I was new to "non-nu metal" in the late 2000s and looked for the newest stuff.
I like all of Slipknot's music, but their latest album didn't stick with me almost at all.
Pre-Cowboys from Hell was a better era of Pantera.
