    This battle scene is goofy and unrealistic, but I must admit it is still very entertaining, and it definitely has the adventurous spirit of the "Indiana Jones" franchise. Also, the relatively period accurate uniforms and weapons/ equipment are a nice touch.

    • @LesterMoore
      @LesterMoore ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kinda reminds me of the scene in first Mummy movie where the French Foreign Legion is barricaded again Tuareg like horsemen. The weaponry resembles the bolt action Mauser. Very deadly rifle with a nasty knockdown bullet.

      Yep, the episode was also explicit that the British, French, and Belgian rulers in Africa were equally as bad as the Germans when Indy said to a Congo soldier that they were fighting to free Africa from German imperialism.

    • @Icanhasautomaticcheeseburger
      @Icanhasautomaticcheeseburger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulle1899 No, they weren't "equally as bad". The Belgians made native oppression a gruesome art form, with brutal mutilations (Didn't meet your rubber quota? Death. But we're too cheap to waste the bullet to kill you, so we'll just cut off your right hand and tell our boss you're dead. Good luck meeting quota next month...) and between 1.5 million and 13 million deaths.

    These episodes are very different from what my grandfather told me about his service in WWI, Mexico before & Russia after the communist take over. But this is about as close, as our generation will ever come to it. Combining these episodes, my memories of him & the type of man he was. Helps me to realize his tremendous spirit & ability. Long lost with age as I came to know him in childhood. He was covered with scars, in constant agony from shrapnel in both legs. & he feared to meet his maker.

    Lots of comments re the Young Indy angle, accuracy of action, historical accuracy, etc, etc.
    The thing I liked most in the opening firstly when the African soldiers grinned at/with him and again that they joined with him at thereby of the ep. What that brought home is that fighting men are brothers regardless of rank and role and colour, etc. Also, that courage knows no artificial bounds, despite what early films tended to show.

The Cold War games ‘tween USSR and USA didn’t help either.

      I am a Brit yet I have always thought that Lettow Von Vorbeck was one of the most amazing leaders in the entirety of WWI. He managed to do more with less than anyone else before or after. His exploits in East Africa read like something out of a fictional novel and yet his activities were all to real. Outgunned and outnumbered with almost no support he outfoxed the British and South Africans on numerous occasions and kept his force in being right up to the end of the war. A truly resourceful and inspirational leader. Hollywood should make a film about his exploits (but they won't because by their rules Germans in wartime have to be the 'baddies').

      Lettow Vorbeck was associated with the right wing in post war German politics. He may have been an anti semite (as many were at that time). This does not condone it but it also does not diminish his outstanding performance during WWI. Using a person's political leanings to blacken their achievements is a well known and much used leftist tactic to discredit anyone who does not follow their beliefs. You are correct, however, about Hollywood's attitude to war, nationality and many other things. All so as to not offend or upset America's self image.

      @@jmc2903 Didn't look into the history of this action, but sounded like English and German askari forces. Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck led an amazing campaign almost the entire length of WWI against the Allied colonial forces, tying down around 10 times the number of his troops.

    Nice sound design by #skywalkersound 's Ben Burtt, who edited the opening battle scene, and sound editor Chris Scarabosio. Interesting to note the stock sound effect explosion at 03:45 - cheesy, but fun to listen to regardless. The score of Joel McNeely is all too memorable. #soundmatters

    The uniforms look quite similar but...the Germans colonial troops wear more straight shape "fezzes" with a symbol/mark in the front, the Belgians colonial troops wear more conic "fezzez" without any symbol/mark on them...
