  • The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg houses the largest model railways in the world. Located in the historic warehouse district it has been one of Hamburg's greatest tourist magnets for many years, which has already captivated millions of visitors.
On the 1499 square meter facility area, there are over 15 kilometers (*) of miniature tracks on which around 1040 digitally controlled model trains travel to the Swiss Alps. You fly to Las Vegas via the Miniatur Wunderland Airport. In our documentary, we looked at the owners of the mini-world while planning and tinkering.
    * in 1:87 scale (nominal size H0 - would correspond in reality to about 1340 kilometers of tracks).

I happen to live in Hamburg and have visited the Wunderland around 10 times. It's so big that no documentary can show. Although you can go through the whole thing in one day, it's still impossible to discover everything that's in there. Even after all the times I have been there I see new things every time.

It is something worth seeing once, but be forewarned that it is not a realistic layout. It is much closer to a series of separate toy train layouts shoehorned into cramped spaces inside a warehouse. For myself with an interest in realistic modeling of RR operations, it was disappointing to see in person - what I could see of it. If you want to see better model railroads made with accuracy and sweeping vistas, there are a number of these layouts around the world that are open to the public. Some are shpwn here on YT on the Pilentum channel.

The bridge, that they were talking about in the last minutes, has now been finished for learly 2 weeks. But the other side won't house England/Scotland (at least for now) but South America. Southern France/Provence is also nearly finished, but Monaco with the Formula 1 racing track is taking some time.

Wunderland Hamburg is beyond words. As a model railroader, I am totally amazed at the details in this Wonderful Place. My home N Scale layout is only 10’ x3’ with an upper shelf of 8’ x3’ and just trying to plan what is going to be included is keeping me busy. I cannot imagine the time and details involved in Wunderland, but just my TH-cam tour is educating me for some of the details I want. My next trip to Europe will definitely include a visit and I am sure I will need several days to explore it all.

This is being extremely extremely nit picky, cause this is just absolutely amazing. The only thing, only thing I would maybe like to see in the future are small cut outs inside parts of the builds for vistors to basically be ground level inside of the city. The builders and techs put such incredible detail that, from a distance you can't always appreciate. But a cleared dome that would allow vistors to basically just be place in say the middle of a busy street and have a full 360 view would just be icing on the cake.
I can not wait to visit here and just experience this first hand.

The Wild West town was a great touch. Everybody loves the steamers for their moving parts, even if they don't fit in with their surroundings, so having areas set in centuries past is a great way of showing them off.
Or you could go forward, and do a 22nd century Mars colony, with tunnel borers boring away, Hyperloops zipping about, and rocketships blasting off from the spaceport.
