Hi Danielle 💜💜Hope Ur doing well 💜💜 🧐🧐👇👇 CASE SUGGESTION 🚨‼️🚨‼️🚨 Emer O Loughlins Murder...Her killer is still on the run wanted by Interpol! Her killer faked his own death and has been on the run ever since ! Her family have been trying to high light her case over the years but it's been forgotten about !! Emer was from Co Clare in Ireland ❤️❤️ (She was murdered in Galway) It would be great if you could put this on your list of cases to cover !! Love your videos 🥰 Thank you! ✌️💖💖
Hi Danielle!! Almost binged all of your videos now! But I have a case suggestion! Eunice Spry. She was a British foster mother and the case is pure evil. The son has a you tube video and it’s harrowing but he is so strong and wants his story told. The others also have some books out. Also ( kinda unrelated) but what is your favourite foundation? I’m on the look out for a new one xxx
Hi Danielle! I appreciate your content. You always tell people's stories in a compassionate way 💜 What is the name of the book you mentioned at the end of the video? I don't see a link for it in the description
My first thought when you were describing his "Macdonald triad" symptoms was that these are also signs of children being abused. Hearing that he was sexually interested in girls at such a young age also points to sexual abuse.
And the bed wetting ? Those are very big telltale signs of child sexual abuse, I’m only at the beginning so I won’t say anything else about the case, but I do think that it should’ve been more looked into especially early on because that’s so sad
I can't stop thinking about Derrick's mom. Imagine only ONCE letting your little kid go on his own and he gets brutually murdered. The guilt must have been unbearable. Edit: let's not shame her, ok? Not letting him go seems obvious in hindsight, and I also wouldn't let him go on his own, but I can also see why she chose to let him walk. It's a small community where everyone knows each other and it's a 6 minute walk. Let's also remember that Eric wanted to hurt someone so even if she walked Derrick to the camp, other kid most likely would have died that day. No one suspected a child to kill him, so it shows that the community seemed safe enough to let a kid walk on his own such a short distance. Let's focus on Eric instead and how he murdered an innocent child.
It's so similar to the famous Etan Patz case from NYC in the late 70s! Etan's mother decided to finally let her 6 or 7yo son walk half a block to meet the school bus; apparently he'd been begging her to let him walk, and since it was less than a block she finally told herself she was being silly and let him walk. She even watched him from the window for as long as he was in sight, since it was the first time. But he vanished at some point on his walk, and was never heard from again. He was one of the first kids on a milk carton in the USA, and his disappearance changed the way American kids were allowed to roam around unsupervised. My partner grew up in NYC, and his mother says that the Patz case traumatized her so badly that she insisted on walking my partner to school until he was about 11yo.
That’s one of the many reasons I love her channel and content. She lets her emotions come out in a non-performative way and such seems very genuine ❤ so glad she discusses these cases in long-form content and in a very respectful manner 🤟
Oh I would love to be her neighbor and just sit and chat with her for hours! I watch a lot of true crime TH-camrs but Danielle is just different with her compassion and personality!
Really? Because i hate how much she acts like only monsters who don't think at all like human beings and are evil (and completely separate from me and you and real people worthy of compassion) commit murders.
Right. And the desecration of that poor boys little remains in a sexually depraved manner….like how does a 13 year old even conceive of such an act? I absolutely think he was SAed by the stepdad too
I wonder if the stepdad was buying the cigarettes too as a grooming behavior. Groomers often try to introduce other "adult" things like drugs or alcohol to make the kid feel special and sneaky and further alienate them from any safe adults by giving them other secrets to keep
Even before you said there's speculation about Ted abusing Eric, I was thinking it. Especially when you mentioned Eric started wetting the bed and also his behaviors, kids who have been abused wet the bed for multiple reasons but one is they subconsciously or consciously wet the bed to try to appear dirty so they won't be assaulted. It's truly sad and disgusting and those kid abusers need to be put down
@@CalicoKitty03 Exactly!!! The fact that he knew so much sexual stuff, something horrible had to been happening in that house 😢 hell I barely knew anything like that till I was into my teen years lol
The fact he sodomized the body and his reaction to the banana kind makes those claims pretty much confirmed. I’m guessing that when the sister is removed from the home the sexual abuse escalated.
I have a 3.5 year old son. I’m not sure I could continue living if that happened to him. This was a very hard case to hear. Thank you for bringing attention and love to little Derrick.
I agree I absolutely could not I would be hurried with my kid. But I only have one child the mother had another so I think that probably makes a difference in your reasons to live.
The contrast between the two boys is so stark. Eric’s photos show the same cold expression every time, but Derrick’s are all so different. There’s such life and ‘goodness’ in his face. It’s so very sad.
Eric expressed no happiness coz he never experienced any. The Eric that could have smiled in photos died a long time ago at the hands of his parents and community.
@@Liliarthan I find the bleeding heart sentiment for Eric to be quite strange. Nearly every single killer on Earth had the same experiences as Eric- many had it way worse. The difference is that those who killed as adults at least *tried* to be functional members of society for a while. Eric just gave up immediately lol. It doesnt make sense that he is getting more sympathy than people who's diseased minds encourage them to kill later in life. Just nonsense.
I understand coddling killers when they are young but bro was a whole 13 years old. he was a whole teenager. A teenager who wore a copy of his victims shirt to court. Bro is calculated and incellish. Bro is 100% going to offend again.
This is a very tragic case. It's extremely upsetting that Eric had to murder this innocent little child for someone to see that there's something wrong with him. He needed therapy and this should have never happened.
Do we wonder if someone like this can’t even be helped with therapy? Is there possibly certain people that are just wired the wrong way? Wired to want to cause harm? I really wonder simply, because we know of so many people who are horribly abused, and don’t commit any of these types of atrocities. What makes one person snap and another not? Possibly a predisposition to violence? Idk, just thoughts.
@@Hiiiiiiiiieeee I wonder the same thing. I work with children, and I do believe nobody is born evil and what I noticed with cases like this, is that the person who ends up murdering do have some type of head injury and/or birth defect. I wish what they'd do with child killers is put them in mental hospital type prisons for children, because I do think they can be changed if they get proper help when they're still children and developing. I'm very interested in child killers, because this isn't normal! The first three years of a person's live is the most important and trauma does change a person if it happens in the early years. I personally feel that if his parents actually cared to help him and got him help the second, he started showing signs, that this wouldn't have happened. I pray he is a changed man and doesn't end up hurting anybody else and I hope he got help while in prison.
@@Hiiiiiiiiieeee while I think this is certainly possible, the fact that this child was so terribly unsupervised and unsupported had to be a factor here. Even if therapy couldn't have helped Erick to stop the urge to harm someone, I believe if even 1 person had just listened and paid attention, this could have been prevented. If Erick had not been allowed to ride his bike around whenever, exposed to excessive bullying whenever, hunt for animals to harm whenever, and eventually harm his victim.... I think it may have mattered. I grew up around the same time period. I would have been considered a latchkee kid. I know a lot of kids were left to play outside pretty unsupervised. But if any adult had paid attention and put forth some energy to supervise him, he might have been able to grow and find a different path....
I think Eric targeted someone he perceived as what he wanted to be. Blonde cute child that everyone loved. He not only targeted him as someone smaller but as someone who represented what he wished he was, someone his family and others would have loved. All the people who failed Eric despite the signs and ultimately Derrick which was preventable if someone had paid attention and done something about Eric.
Yeah kids can be very violent too. And i think he might have been abused as well. Kids have usually hard time to control their behavior and emotions. In my opinion his parents failed him.
My heart breaks for Derricks family. This makes my blood run cold. It's infuriating to know that Eric's parents had all the red flags and did nothing. The system does not rehabilitate the person has to Wanted in their own heart
There needs to be more punishment for parents like this. Partially because they've let down their own child(ren), but also because they're putting society at risk.
the bed wetting, the thinking of girls sexually at 4??? smoking at 9?? so much abuse and neglect he went through as a child and no one did anything, his parents are 100% to blame
Sadly as an educator, I come across parents just like Eric’s and I fear something like this will happen because of it. There are a lot out there that remove all accountability from themselves and their children for any and everything. No matter how many times issues are brought up, they express blatant denial about their child’s clearly disturbed behavior. Even if they recognize it themselves, they try to convince themselves that it’s “just a phase” or “normal.” No. If teachers are making you aware of any disturbing behavior from your child or they express concern, listen to them. You should seek out resources and get your child help. We do this for a living and work with hundreds of children, we know “normal” behaviors. Not to mention, he tried himself to let them know what he was feeling. They failed as parents and an innocent little boy died because of it. So tragic
You are 100% on point with this comment!!! I work in my kids school now and the things I see in kids is scary and MOST of those kids have the not my kid type parents... I don't get it! I have 4 kids.. my oldest has a different father then my other 3 and his father was schizoaffective, when I found out he got that diagnosis I did research! Found out all I could so if my son showed any signs I could get him help! Thankfully so far so good but he's just 18 and his father started showing symptoms around 19 and was full blown schizoaffective by 25..
As an educator myself, I whole heartedly agree with your comment.I’ve been working as an educator for 20 years and it seems to be getting worse every year.
@@alphabetsoup6681 agree- as educators we are mandated to report it. And most if not all do report it- but what to do when the people you report it to do nothing . How many times do we see in the news how things like this are reported and then stuff happens only to find that the very people/ agencies we report to- do nothing. Educators can report all they want - it’s the other end that actually need to do their jobs.
This is one of the only cases where I've felt bad for the victim and the murderer. Eric asked for help and didn't get it. His parents are guilty too, of so much. This could have been prevented as others have stated. If your child asks for help, please, please do not ignore it. Rest in peace, sweet Derek.
His parents in many ways did this to him, especially the abusive pedophile stepdad. All his parental figures made him feel unwanted and uncared for, and everyone outside his home demonized him for his issues instead of calling CPS on his family to try to get him help.
Sigh…I wish sone people woks stop always shifting blame when it comes to these kids. Yes that’s all basic parents blah blah we really don’t know all the details in that lol feeling bad for that boy is insane
@@iMsOiNsO feeling sad for the kid isn’t insane . People always want to say when they hear about murderers backstory is “ that’s not an excuse to murder someone “ then want to sit there and say “ why would he do something like that ? “ HIS BACKSTORY IS THE REASON Y HE DID IT TF. An excuse is calling in work sick when in reality you aren’t really sick . It’s not an excuse it’s the exact reason why they kill . The boy needed help . R.I.p bby Derrick tho ❤️
@@iMsOiNsO You get bullied unmercifully for years by everyone you know, you get beaten for years, it’s obvious he was sexually assaulted AND your dad not wanting you… that would funk anyone’s head up…. Especially a child… we feel bad for the kid becuz his life was hell and no one would help him. Sadly, he took his anger out on a small innocent child. The adults in his life completely failed him… THATS why we have compassion for him.
@@iMsOiNsO Eric was a child who was physically, emotionally, and most likely sexually abused. This all could have all been prevented. Killers who kill without motive other than the act itself don't just pop up out of nowhere. If Eric had gotten the help and care he needed, Derrick would be alive.
Derrick was so precious... Rest in peace 🕊️, angel. For everyone's sake, I hope Eric is stronger, psychologically and that he goes on and doesn't hurt anyone else. Maybe not rehabilitated but able to control himself.
Watching these cases is starting to make me think in these specific situations where the kids are clearly asking for help before doing something awful, the parents need to be held accountable to some extent.
@Blue4626 thankfully something is kind of happening like that. Parents of a school shooter are in prison because they saw the signs, ignored their son begging for help, and then bought him the gun that was used in the mass murder
I am insanely overprotective which isn’t always a good thing. I could not ever let my kids go anywhere without me, but I know in the 80s-early 90s this actually wasn’t that uncommon. So I can see why she did. But that guilt would have been unbearable. Mother to mother I hope she is ok.
I am the same. Some things you can’t take any risks on. This particular case is so extremely rare, thank goodness, but sexual assault of children by both adults and children known to them is so so common unfortunately. It terrifies me.
Be careful to not traumatize your kids in the process. Our parents were extremely overprotective and inadvertently sexualized us constantly, emotionally neglected us, taught us concepts a young child shouldn't know, etc. PLEASE. For the sake of your kids. Be careful. Don't traumatize your kids by sexualizing them while talking about stranger danger.
This should’ve been prevented. His parents should be going to jail too for child neglect and abuse. Also why did Ted not go to jail directly after what he did to his step daughter? This is a tragedy and it’s hard to not feel mad at everyone who knew how Eric was and didn’t try to help especially when he was doing it out in the open…
We should make parents more accountable! Imagine how many murderers we would have if children got the help, love and guidance they needed. Probably none. These assholes basically creates killers
Na she loved that kid u can see it in his eyes. Eric was the one neglected u can see it in his eyes he was not loved. Neglected no, she just took her eyes off him assuming he b safe based on many other safe times in the neighborhood.
Society doesn’t care enough about children except during arguments about women’s rights to have abortions. We see this time and time again, in almost every single story about serial killers and the most sadistic rapists and murderers. Children aren’t protected when they are young, but when they grow up and commit crimes as a result of their upbringing then they are punished (after they’ve left a trail of victims behind). I’ve also noticed that the media often sanitises rape by labelling it as ‘sexual assault’. The word rape is an upsetting word, because it’s a horrendous crime, so it should be. But people seem to worry more about the comfort of readers/viewers than of the victims. I really appreciate that Danielle says it like it is.
He was clearly a failed child, with huge signs of abuse from a very young age. It's insane it sounds like his parents weren't reported. If the children were properly protected, this could have been prevented. It's a cycle of abuse that causes mental health issues that fuel these awful tragic events. It's so sad, this world needs to do so much better🙌Rest in Peace Derek🌟💛
@Margo Lane No one here said to not be held responsible. Read my comment... I'm saying this needs to be prevented; Children suffering abuse. There's a TON of research that shows EVERY person in the prison system has been victim to abuse. Some victims of abuse go on to abuse, and it's often the people that dealt with horrific abuse that turn into abusers. NOT always SOME people *I wanna make that clear*. Preventing and protecting children from abuse CAN CERTAINLY prevent further abuse and violence.
@@JodieLee07 Saying every person is a huge stretch. You're eliminating victimless crimes and white collar crimes when you say that. There's also murderers and sex offenders who have no history of being abused. They end up doing their crimes because of a mental disability, or they have severe mental health issues. That's not saying that a majority of people in prisons have experienced abuse because that's definitely the case. Even then, getting abused as a child is absolutely no excuse for committing crimes.
My baby is 2 months away from being 5. I'm in tears trying to hide it sitting next to her while she excitedly explains the movie "bolt" to me. She's so happy and excitable and social and Little and wants to be so independent playing with the neighborhood kids. I feel so horrible for these parents, and sad for that baby.
Whenever I see kids under 6 walking around by themselves, I get so scared for them. My heart starts to freak out because all I can think is where are your parents 😭 his poor parents. Please please please don’t let your babies go anywhere themselves.
And it's disturbing the push to shame "helicopter" parents. To push the belief that kids kept protected and safe can't develop grit and independence. I was one of those 80s kids whose life was supposed to so great bc my parents didn't give a shit where I was or who I was with. Needless to say, childhood was a living nightmare
Absolutely. Whenever I see a child under age 14/15 walking by themselves, I would hover at an unintrusive distance until I can visually locate their caregiver and can see that the adult has their eye on the kid. I don’t even care if people find that strange. I’m not risking any kid, mine or not, being harmed. I am not just my kids’ protector, I’m the protector of all kids that crosses my path.
I feel it, I've got an 8 and 7 year old and couldn't imagine letting them walk anywhere, but I was also allowed to do so at that age because of the times and the neighborhood.. My kids aren't even allowed to go three doors down to their friend's house without me watching them. I'm not a helicopter parent by any stretch, but I don't trust people.
This angers me so much. That little boy should have not lost his life. He should be here, alive, a successful career, a wife and even a family of his own.
As a kid, my neighborhood was beyond “safe”. I don’t really remember parents ever walking us to school since it was so close and tight knit. Now I can’t imagine letting a kid do that in this world.
I am a die-hard fan of your videos and have seen every single one. I love the way you deliver these cases and I adore the empathy you have for the victims. Thank you for covering these cases.
If you love the way Danielle covers cases, you should also check out Eleanor Neals! She’s also covered soo many different cases and she’s very respectful and empathetic to the victims.
@@adenabdulla308 actually discovered Danielle when Eleanor went on her break😂 I’ve watched every video since 🥰 I conveniently happened to be pregnant lol🎉
I've actually been wanting you to cover the story of Elisabeth Fritzl (AKA the girl in the basement) there's an entire movie on her case but I'd love to hear you cover the real case
Danielle, the enormous amount of emotional energy that must have gone into researching this weeks case is phenomenal, let alone the strength that has been needed to bring this story to the masses is incredible. This was one of the most difficult stories I have ever had to listen to, but one that should never be forgotten. Derek deserves to be honored for his bravery even in his final moments and you captured his personality with such dignity and respect for the family. It breaks my heart listening to the details you include, but your empathy for him and the family doesn't go unnoticed. It brings home the fact that these unfortunately were real events that impacted very real people who could have been our own child/family, instead of just being a 'story'. Your hard work doesn't go unappreciated, thank you from your fans 🙂 And take care of you! Go snuggle your fur baby!
Derek not only looks a lot like my son when he was little, they sound as though they had similar personalities. I was a child of the 80's and 90's. My mother, who was an elementary school teacher, had an extreme fear of my brother and I being taken and thus in my childhood I wasn't permitted to go anywhere alone, or my brother without me. I became the same type of mom. Plenty of times I wore pajamas to bring my son to school, or wore messy house clothes to drop him off at his friend's house down the block. My intense terror that someone would take my son was not only an inherited fear, but one that had flourished with my interest in true crime. Derek sounds like he was a beautiful, amazing little boy. I hope his heaven is filled with all of his favorite things, always.
I am the same. Even when I go to the grocery store if he’s not next to me at all times i get anxiety because I’ve seen people being a little too interested and hovering too close when out shopping. I’ve taught him what to do if ever something happens. Hopefully it never comes to that. My prayers are with this family. Im sure I wouldn’t be able to forgive something like this but maybe I’m just not the better person here.
I love ur heart! U get so emotional & truly show ur humanity. After all these cases u haven't become numb to the heartache & sadness from the victims. It's such a beautiful thing to see in today's world!
This is one of the most horrific stories I have encountered. I am in tears. I really appreciate your content and kindness. This is too much to unpack in this moment. As always you do your research very well. When it comes to animals and/or children…I can’t. There is nothing in this life that will bring me to my knees in agony and tears than that of child and animal abuse.
I for one will never forget the James Bulger case. After hearing the details of the case I was an emotional wreck for two weeks. My son just happened to be the same age as James when he was murdered by the two boys and every time I looked at my son I could see James. There are a number of cases that I have only heard of once and have no interest in hearing a second time. Sylvia Likens is one that comes to mind and James Bulger is another. It's every parent's worst nightmare.
The James Bulger case terrifies me as a mother because my son his age is so enamoured with other children he would absolutely just go with another slightly older child. Beyond sickening. We must always be on our guard with our babies
@Anna Bollock it really feels terrifying.. I recall this case & the Bulger case. Reading & watching news reports caused me nausea. I'd never heard of the Sylvia case you mentioned, but I'm guessing that it's awful.
@@St.Linguini_of_Pesto It was absolutely horrifying. There have actually been movies made about her murder. One was called "The Girl Next Door". I've never watched any of them and I have no intention of ever doing so.
@@tngribzmy kids too. They have zero reservations about going off with another child, and that’s how it should be. How does a parent even attempt to warn their children that children are also capable of harming them? We are struggling to know how to even explain why they need to be weary of all adults, even family, when it comes to body safety. We’ve just resigned to not ever letting them out of our sight until they are old enough to understand and to defend themself. It would sound like paranoia and helicopter parenting to some people, but rape and murder aren’t things you can risk even once 😞. And sexual assault of children is so so common.
I agree. The James Bolger case destroyed me when I learned of it. My oldest son was at that time, the same age as James had been, and I had a newborn named James. I could not imagine two boys taking that sweet, trusting soul from his mother’s side and not just let one of the 34 adults who encountered them and showed concern have little James and they could just run off. I had dreams for years afterward that I had encountered them, sensed something was wrong and got the kids to relinquish him. And that with the police’s help we got James to his mother. I wish, so much, that these victims would be leading full lives with their families.
I watch a LOT of true crime, so it’s very hard for a case to get to me, but this case made me sick to my stomach. I can’t even bring myself to imagine what it was like for Derrick. My heart breaks for him and his family
I really struggle with cases like this, how anyone can harm a baby is absolutely beyond me. That poor sweet love. I find it very hard to feel sympathy for Eric.
@@samdoyle6 damn sis educate yourself. All the poster said was she found it difficult. Which it should be for any normal person. She wasn't complaining or anything. Think next time. 😬🤣
To be fair, Eric's family and peers completely broke him and he was asking for help but no one cared. He was probably in a state of disassociation at that point. Just a being of pure pain and rage with no positive emotional connections to anyone, and no ability to feel empathy as a result of just how isolated and hurt he was from a young age. Acting out became the only way for him to feel any sense of control and any respite from his own trauma. You see this a lot with kids who grew up in his circumstances, though they usually don't escalate to murder until they are a bit older, and some commit suicide before reaching that point.
This one hit me hard. My daughter is 4 years old, and she's just a baby...ugh. I couldn't imagine the pain his parents went through. This just breaks my heart to pieces... RIP Derek. Sweet little angel taken way too soon❤️🩹
Lots of kids are born developmentally delayed for one reason or another...this is where nature vs nurture comes in...if you have attentive caring parents with common sense they can absolutely get help. All his issues are not from being developmentally delayed.
What a tragic case. And for any people interested in the James Bulgar case Danielle mentioned, Eleanor Neales has a fantastic video covering that case. I love how respectful and empathetic they both are to the victims with the cases they cover.
Watched it on a true crime special. I couldn't believe they basically got no punishment. The place they were in was just like a boarding school. Their parents could pick them up and take them shopping or on family outings. They had games and computer Access. Then they got new identities when they were released. The sad thing is one of them kept breaking the law. Smdh.
Dale Robie was my photography teacher at the Coopers Plains BOCES program. Every year the criminal justice class i was in would write letters to the judge every time he came up for parole. Begging them not to let that monster out, to have compassion for his father and mother. Now he lives back in the same community, Mr. & Mrs. Robie were done so dirty by this local "justice system"
it's not up to you though, the fact someone gets parole is based on rehabilitation, and if they are rehabilitated, they can be let back into society. I'll never be friends or close to a rehabilitated person though, just ain't gonna happen.

The video of Derek catching the fish with his dad made me ball hysterically. It is so heartbreaking because he seemed like such a wonderful little boy. PS. I love this look today and the lips are amazing
I can hear in your voice from the moment you start talking about Derrick that you are holding back tears. There is nothing more tragic than the death of a child.
I don't normally get too emotional listening to these but everytime Danielle starts to get choked up I start tearing up Make sure you're taking the self-care breaks you need queen ❤
I have a 3-year-old niece... this is one of the hardest cases I've ever heard about, not only because of the tragedy that occurred and the horrific acts done, but because I cannot imagine how my family would respond if my little sweet niece was hurt like this... 😢😭💔
I'm only about 15 minutes in but wanted to drop in and say I'm on couple different epilepsy meds for a different neurological illness and every neurologist appointment am always asked about plans for pregnancy , dangers of unplanned pregnancy on these types of medicines and to keep up on my contraception. Always. Alllwaayys. Anyway, was so excited to see the new drop , thanks so much for all your hard work 💗
Right, the meds probably damaged Eric, but with parents like this any help he could have received was never given. He's obviously not right, and has developmental problems, but his parents did nothing to help him at all. Unfortunately, this was the early 90's, and less was known. This is tragic for EVERYONE involved.
I love how Danielle points out how we can have compassion for people who do horrendous things without condoning what they've done. People fall for so many false dichotomies in life. The victims AND the perpetrators deserve our understanding. Instead of frantically separating ourselves from the perpetrators of crimes, we SHOULD have more compassion, especially because society holds some of the responsibility for these failed children.
Right on sister! Just because people do something horrible doesn’t mean they don’t deserve empathy & compassion but it certainly doesn’t excuse anything. The pure victims is a helpless 4 yr old boy.
This devil incarnate does not deserve no compassion after doing what he does to a TODDLER. Many people are abused and do not do this sick torture to a TODDLER. Deserves nothing but the worst things in life.
Especially in this case. Eric did this probably because he thought violence was normal. His parents made them like that. Eric did that because he had uncontrollable anger inside him. He thought he deserved to get revenge. This is so sad that this had to happen. Derrick is forever gone and Eric will suffer rest of his life.
This reminds me of the Mary Bell case from the late 60s!! I teach Psychology and we always do a serial killer of the week. Mary Bell was our killer last week, even though she killed two people rather than three. She was only 11 years old…
How can a thirteen year old be so vile holy crap, he didn't even just commiy a brutal murder, he got excited when talking about it, revisted the crime scene, participated in searches, and wore a shirt of the same cartoon that Derrick was wearing when he got murdered?? This is literally stuff we hear grown serial killers do.
I'm not making excuses for Eric but he was failed by everyone had his young life been different he would no doubt be a productive member of society today.
It is possible to feel sympathy for someone and still disapprove of their choices. Everyone has reasons for their behaviour but a reason is not the same as an excuse
I can litterly not wait for you to upload content on Sundays. Absolutely love you, Danielle. Thank you very much for your hard work on your videos. You absolutely do justice to victims
Danielle, thank you for bringing this story to us. So sad to see a child so full of rage that he resorted to taking Dericks precious life. You help bring to light how special little Derick was and this wonderful way of honoring the victim shows what a beautiful soul you have. Your very blessed to have such a lovely face to match. I love your work including your make-up! Can't wait for the next video!
I've seen a couple of these cases before when someone else does them and I still love to watch them again when you do them. I just really enjoy your voice and the compassion you have when you discuss the victims and even the past or childhood of the perpetrators. It's refreshing.
I remember this case. I was 13 years old and traveled to Savona a lot with my parents from corning which was about 20-30 minutes away. I have been wanting someone to cover this case. Eric Smith should have never been granted parole. Even at 13 I was appalled and saddened. What happens if he gets angry again? Will another person or child die at his hands? My love still goes out to the family even after all these years.
This happened about 15 miles away from me. I remember being absolutely terrified thinking that a serial killer was making his way around my area. I am only a year older than Eric and when i learned that it was a kid my age, I couldn’t believe it. Savona is even smaller than you could even imagine and when this happened, it changed that little town forever. I can’t even drive through there now, almost 30 years later, without getting emotional. And seeing Eric’s stupid smug face to this day makes me sick to my stomach. I cannot feel bad for him. My own life was changed and my sense of safety tainted because of his actions. I will never forget Derrick, as long as I live 💜
Side note about his release…he’s downstate because NO ONE around here wanted him living up here. He tried to come back to the area but it didn’t work out so well for him. No one around here could ever forget what he did.
I was wondering when you were going to cover this case. You always go so in depth. Thank you for all the research you do. This kid TRIED to get help. It gives no excuse at all. My heart hurts for Derek. Poor baby 😞
I love how empathic you are when you are telling these tragic stories not a lot of true crime TH-camrs or podcasters don’t show sympathy like you do and I find it really enduring ❤ such a tragic case I feel for Eric because of everything he went through with the bullying and the abuse and his father not wanting him I can understand he was angry but that doesn’t give anyone the right to take it out on another person and end their life let alone a child , and I don’t think he should be aloud near children at all I’d hate for something to happen I hope Eric proves us wrong and stays on the straight at narrow
Lindsey from Scotland here, I watch many true crime people on here but you're by far my favourite, you show real emotion and empathy it makes it that much more personal, keep doing what you do ❤️
Ugh, I remember this. I had just graduated high school. The local reports showed an interview with Eric (which has long since been taken down due to age protections, and Eric was in fact crying) saying he "used" the stick in such a way to try and "stab his heart so he'd stop breathing". It took a long time for Derrick to pass and that's the reason Eric kept going back to ensure he really was gone. I can't stand looking at Derrick's precious face, he was literally an angel on this Earth taken out by another child with demons instilled from the treatment of the adults in his life. Awful awful tragedy all around.
1993 was an unusually bad year for child murders. James Bulger, Polly Klaas, The 3 boys from West Memphis, AR, Derek Robey and a lot more I can’t remember at this moment. I was only 11-12 but I remember all of them. May they all R.I.P.
I did get emotional watching this one. I am a mother to a 2 year old I could not imagine this happening. This is absolutely heart breaking. The way you have got upset throughout the video shows how deeply you care for others. You are an amazing true crime story teller. Keep up the good work Danielle xo
I love the fact that you give the background of the predators. There are lots of cases that I’ve already heard of and typically with anyone else I don’t watch because I already know what happens but I love watching yours because there is always a new interesting take with the inclusion of their background !! Thanks for the great videos!
I honestly can't finish this one. I got to 20 minutes and just had to back out. I wanted to thank you for another video full of compassion but also sticking to the truth that you can feel compassion for someone without condoning what they do. I appreciate that you show and teach this because it's something many people need to hear. Thank you for being you!
😢 Thank you for another case, although it’s such an unfortunate tragedy. I admire your efforts to tell it and the empathy you have shown. The BEST true crime channel!! ❤
You went into so much more detail about Eric than I have ever heard from a true crime TH-camr. I’ve watched a few videos on this case, but no one has covered all the trauma that he endured. That doesn’t make what he did acceptable by any means. I just didn’t know that much about his home life. Everyone just always touches on the bullying.
Explaining what he went through doesn't condon what he did but it helps understand why he did what he and that it could have been avoidable if was given the help that he needed
I usually take issue with people using the term “real (x)” for bio parents in cases where the kid was adopted - a real dad is the one who tucks you in at night, not the person whose genetic material you share. That said - if his adoptive dad was that willing to be “not his real dad”, that willing to treat him so poorly… it seems like Eric ended up worse off than if he’d had no dad at all.
I haven't commented in months but just want to say how happy I am that your channel is growing the way that it is. Can't wait to see you reach 1 million! So proud of you
Joleen here, jewels daughter just on her phone. I have a five year old boy who is also a bit cheeky, silly, loving, and adores his four year old sister and his almost one year . I cannot fathom the absolute pain and guilt his mama feels. I've heard this case a lot , nd is one of the reasons I can't let my kids play even in my yard without me. I hope my grandma gives this sweet boy a hug because she gave the best . Literally the first time in years hearing tbis and can't stop cryinf thinking of this poor baby and family.
thank you so much, Danielle! you always speak in detail and with a lot of respect for victims! I wish we all live in the world where small Derrick's can go play outside and not be affraid anything so terrific would happen to them...
The Mother should NEVER have let her 4 year old walk alone.Never, for any reason.full stop, she is his Mother and resposible for his safety 24/7...He was 4!! Who lets a 4 year old go amywhere alone?? TERRIBLE decision. So tragic..😢😢
Horribly tragic - my heart breaks 💔 for Derek's parents. Losing a child is horrific enough, losing your child to torture and murder must be a bottomless nightmare that will never go away. Thanks for your endless empathy for all the victims of these dreadful crime cases you report on Danielle. Your gentle respect will be a balm to the souls of their loved ones! 😍
I’m a mother of a 4 year old and I cried and my heart broke for Derrick and his family! This case was absolutely horrifying! These stories make me crazy but I’m so thankful for the awareness.
Thank you for always showing so much empathy and respect toward the families and victims. Can you please do one on Eric Hainstock when you get a chance?
I'm a Danielle too lol but I love listening to Danielle and watching her makeup expertise and she's my absolute favorite to sit and watch after a long day of work or when I just need to get out of my own life for awhile. She's so real and empathetic and very professional as well, and I love it!!
My son had 2 out of 3, he never harmed animals that I'm aware of. He is a fairly decent human being now, we have communicated through the issues as he got older. Makes me feel very thankful!!
Apparently the McDonald triad is somewhat outdated now. Tbh harming animals is enough of a red flag on its own anyway. I'm glad you were able to sort the issues with your son. Wishing you both the best.
My heart goes out to the family of the poor little boy. And honestly I feel bad that Erik was obviously failed as a child, I don't know if a good childhood would have changed anything but it's still sad to hear a child be failed
A lot of children are abused and don’t end up being violent. Hell I was. But I can’t help but feel for this kid despite what he turned into. It’s like he was in the middle of a perfect storm with no escape. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to have children and should be held accountable for their part. This is just sad all around. Ty for your exhaustive research and delivery. Appreciate it. Hadn’t heard about this until today. Again just so sad. This now man should’ve never been released.
Honestly if I didn’t have the mother I have I very well could have turned into a horribly violent person. She taught me what empathy was and to always put myself in others shoes to understand how my actions affect them. She also was my safe space inside the storm I was going through
I have never wanted to reach through the screen and hug you Danielle, more than today! I blame the parents of Eric, 100%. This sequence of events could have been prevented if they paid attention to their child. I remember this case and I remember feeling sorry for Eric and of course sorry for Derrek.
Eric doesn't deserve to be free after what he did to that little boy. Agree with me or not, that's fine, but I can't forget what he did and having children under the age of 5 of my own, this case makes me feel terrified of that same possibility happening to my children.
Hi Danielle I'm so excited I can watch now!!! I absolutely love and adore you ❤️. Your amazing at telling these cases . Just like Mary Poppins practically perfect in every way. Your makeup is always on point 🎯 😘🥰🌻💋😍❤️🌹🧚♂️👑I've heard this case before but can't wait to hear it from you 💗 Sending all my love ❤️ strength 💪and prayers 🙏to Derricks family. I think that he himself was S/Ad and had no love or support from his family and as far as him serving the time he did I truly hope he learned his lesson and turns his life around
I quite literally just finished a 48 hours episode on this case as part of a playlist (thanks Nord VPN 😅 not usually available in Australia) so I was shocked when this came up as a video you'd just released. The Robie parents have the kindest of hearts. Praying for their wonderful family and their never-ending optimistic outlook on life, despite the devastating loss of their sweet boy 😥
Thank you for touching on James Bulger! His little beautiful life was taken too soon! ❤ you are amazing and I absolutely love you. Stay safe and keep it positive.
I have seen this story covered many times and I want to say that your compassion and the way you covered this was beautifully done. I love that you always have such empathy for the family and victims. Thank you for that.
This happened on my 8th birthday and I remember how awful it was. This case along with Jacob wetterling was what started the shift of letting kids go do things by themselves as much. I hope Eric doesn't commit anymore crime but I also don't think he should be free.
The emotion in your voice. We all wish to own a time machine to be at the right place at the right time. This is my #1 fear 😭😭😭😭 all the love for derricks mother and family. I would be beyond crushed and as someone with kids who start their first daycare on Tuesday this hits so hard 😫
I always have found freckles to be so beautiful and secretly wished to have some my own since I saw them for the first time. They shouldn't be one of the reason to be bullied for
I am literally in Savona now picking up my daughter from daycare. Derricks father was a teacher of mine in high school. He is such a good guy. Still to this day I think about this every day when I drive through Savona and by “Robie rd.”

CASE SUGGESTION 🚨‼️🚨‼️🚨
Emer O Loughlins Murder...Her killer is still on the run wanted by Interpol!
Her killer faked his own death and has been on the run ever since !
Her family have been trying to high light her case over the years but it's been forgotten about !!
Emer was from Co Clare in Ireland ❤️❤️
(She was murdered in Galway)
It would be great if you could put this on your list of cases to cover !!
Love your videos 🥰
Thank you! ✌️💖💖
Perfect timing too I just put the kids to bed and have a fresh cuppa tea 👌❤️
Hi Danielle!! Almost binged all of your videos now! But I have a case suggestion! Eunice Spry. She was a British foster mother and the case is pure evil. The son has a you tube video and it’s harrowing but he is so strong and wants his story told. The others also have some books out. Also ( kinda unrelated) but what is your favourite foundation? I’m on the look out for a new one xxx
Can you do the case on Betty Broderick. I would love to hear your take on it 😊
Hi Danielle! I appreciate your content. You always tell people's stories in a compassionate way 💜
What is the name of the book you mentioned at the end of the video? I don't see a link for it in the description
My first thought when you were describing his "Macdonald triad" symptoms was that these are also signs of children being abused. Hearing that he was sexually interested in girls at such a young age also points to sexual abuse.
Exactly this.
Yes it does,.cause how did he know about Sodom if he never experienced it
And the bed wetting ? Those are very big telltale signs of child sexual abuse, I’m only at the beginning so I won’t say anything else about the case, but I do think that it should’ve been more looked into especially early on because that’s so sad
Was thinking the same thing
I used to wet the bed til I was 14 and set things on fire but Ive always loved animals
I got lucky man
I can't stop thinking about Derrick's mom.
4 years old though???
The trust issues that would be there
It's so similar to the famous Etan Patz case from NYC in the late 70s!
My partner grew up in NYC, and his mother says that the Patz case traumatized her so badly that she insisted on walking my partner to school until he was about 11yo.
so so heartbreaking.
@@canmckenna2556 when I was a child, this was not uncommon.
I love Danielle and the passion and compassion she has for victims. Seems like she genuinely cares for them and their families
That’s one of the many reasons I love her channel and content. She lets her emotions come out in a non-performative way and such seems very genuine ❤ so glad she discusses these cases in long-form content and in a very respectful manner 🤟
Definitely!!!
She’s such a sweet angel 😇
Oh I would love to be her neighbor and just sit and chat with her for hours! I watch a lot of true crime TH-camrs but Danielle is just different with her compassion and personality!
Really? Because i hate how much she acts like only monsters who don't think at all like human beings and are evil (and completely separate from me and you and real people worthy of compassion) commit murders.
That stepdad was definitely abusing him too…the bed wetting and sexual interest at a young age are clear signs of sexual abuse
@@Osephinejay this!! ☹️
Yes. 100%
It's truly sad and disgusting and those kid abusers need to be put down
yeah, honestly even before she mentioned that I was weary of the step father. just a weird intuitive feeling i guess
The fact that Eric was seemingly sexually aware at such a young age makes me think that that nasty stepdad messed with him to.
I am sure Eric would grow up the same kid abuser and even worse... He needs to stay locked up. Scary to think he might end up working with children.
I have a 3.5 year old son. I’m not sure I could continue living if that happened to him. This was a very hard case to hear. Thank you for bringing attention and love to little Derrick.
Yeah Derrick reminds me of my 4 year old. I'm ready to back out of this video quick if I can't handle it.
I agree I absolutely could not I would be hurried with my kid. But I only have one child the mother had another so I think that probably makes a difference in your reasons to live.
I got a 2 year old. I am so scared for him.
The contrast between the two boys is so stark. Eric’s photos show the same cold expression every time, but Derrick’s are all so different. There’s such life and ‘goodness’ in his face. It’s so very sad.
It seems like his parents actually gave a shit about him, for one. Whoda thunk.
Because Eric's childhood was murdered first.
Even before he started harming animals, he should’ve gotten therapy.
@@ardenalexa94 Yes, because of the extreme temper tantrums.
My thoughts exactly about the victim he chose.
Yeah kids can be very violent too. And i think he might have been abused as well. Kids have usually hard time to control their behavior and emotions. In my opinion his parents failed him.
Maybe or he was convenient
All this and the way he treated that lunch says something about resentment, bitterness, rage towards life it represents.
Some times people are born different and all the therapy in the world won't change it.
We don't usually hear the victims voice. Seeing that video of Derick fishing broke my heart.
My heart breaks for Derricks family. This makes my blood run cold.
It's infuriating to know that Eric's parents had all the red flags and did nothing. The system does not rehabilitate the person has to Wanted in their own heart
The parents CAUSED the red flags.
Failed Society 🤷🏻♂️
There needs to be more punishment for parents like this. Partially because they've let down their own child(ren), but also because they're putting society at risk.
@@jeritiley4369 exactly!
the bed wetting, the thinking of girls sexually at 4??? smoking at 9?? so much abuse and neglect he went through as a child and no one did anything, his parents are 100% to blame
I so agree 💯
As an educator myself, I whole heartedly agree with your comment.I’ve been working as an educator for 20 years and it seems to be getting worse every year.
As an educator you are a MANDATED REPORTER. REPORT IT.
My heart is shattered when I heard Derick fighting for his life. He was so small.
😭 My thoughts and prayers for his family, especially for his mom.
i’m a criminology student, and i’ve heard and seen a ton of cases. but i have NEVER, NEVER almost cried like i did on this one.
Thank for highlighting the remembrance of little Derrick. Such an adorable spunky kid who should of had a long life.
Thank you for giving us another case, we appreciate the work you put in
I am insanely overprotective which isn’t always a good thing.
@@Liliarthan it is and this case was just horrifying!
The mom probably prevented Stacy from pressing charges
100% agree
He was clearly a failed child, with huge signs of abuse from a very young age. It's insane it sounds like his parents weren't reported. If the children were properly protected, this could have been prevented. It's a cycle of abuse that causes mental health issues that fuel these awful tragic events. It's so sad, this world needs to do so much better🙌Rest in Peace Derek🌟💛
Exactly this, someone was assaulting him from age 4 or younger, no doubt in my mind.
@Wm J Yes Eric and his sister?
Imo parents who abuse their minor children who then go on to do violent crimes should be held responsible too.
My 4 year is sitting next to me asking for help with roblox and showing me how funny the games are. It is heart shattering.
Sameeee😭
I feel scared for any kid walking alone that is under 18, they're all kids and very vulnerable and just pray they stay safe
Can you imagine how much guilt Derek's mother must feel for going against her instincts and letting him go alone 💔

I just can't wrap my head around how anyone could harm a baby... It's so heartbreaking...

Or anyone letting their baby walk around outside by themselves .

She’s one of the few I’ve seen that treat the case with empathy! Also, Kendall Rae and Bella Fiori. Check them out if you haven’t already
She's so amazing! I'm so lucky to have found her. ❤
I've actually been wanting you to cover the story of Elisabeth Fritzl (AKA the girl in the basement) there's an entire movie on her case but I'd love to hear you cover the real case
I would like to see one about her also
Danielle, the enormous amount of emotional energy that must have gone into researching this weeks case is phenomenal, let alone the strength that has been needed to bring this story to the masses is incredible.
I hope Derrick's mom is okay and she is getting by. Thank you for putting out these cases.
Just sounds like you had a rightfully protective parent by all accounts.
@@imysaurus not to freak you out more, but watching true crime we know that 80 per cent or more of cases are by people we KNOW not strangers
That poor mum. She will always feel it was her fault. I can not imagine how she must feel. My heart breaks for her 💔
I love ur heart!
I find it very hard to feel sympathy for Eric.
did you not hear the entire beginning of her coverage of this case? damn.. educate yourself sis :/
Oh my that is so horrible. I’m so sorry for them. They have been through too much. My heart breaks for them.
OMG! HOW HORRENDOUS FOR THE PARENTS OF THAT LITTLE BOY..
Let’s hope he learned from the time in jail
it's not up to you though, the fact someone gets parole is based on rehabilitation, and if they are rehabilitated, they can be let back into society. I'll never be friends or close to a rehabilitated person though, just ain't gonna happen.
Parole is actually based on time served and not rehabilitation or regret or anything other than time served and parole due.
Such a devastating, heartbreaking story. What a precious, precious little boy Derek was. My heart breaks.
Derrick was a charming little lad. Robbed of his life. Eric's parents are responsible as well. They created the monster.

Always. Alllwaayys. Anyway, was so excited to see the new drop , thanks so much for all your hard work 💗
I wonder if that wasn't standard practice at that time? Or they hadn't done enough research on it and later found out it can cause harm to a fetus.
same!!! i completely switched to a safer one when I reached my teen years- just in case.
Right, the meds probably damaged Eric, but with parents like this any help he could have received was never given. He's obviously not right, and has developmental problems, but his parents did nothing to help him at all. Unfortunately, this was the early 90's, and less was known. This is tragic for EVERYONE involved.
I wonder if they ever did a brain scan on him, considering it’s just a theory.
yeah 80's were different. You dont even want to know how dangerous those meds were that used to be prescribed ( I mean for the fetus)
@@kristenprange6812 absolutely.

What a tearjerker this one was. My heart breaks for Derek's mother.
This story absolutely kills me. I have a cheeky 4 year old son and I can’t imagine moving on from something like this. I couldn’t do it.
This reminds me of the Mary Bell case from the late 60s!! I teach Psychology and we always do a serial killer of the week. Mary Bell was our killer last week, even though she killed two people rather than three. She was only 11 years old…
I remember hearing about that case. It was so tragic.
@@sugarsundae3400you definitely did make excuses for him.

Poor baby 😞

How did he try to get help? I must have missed that part.
@iammojojojo he told his stepdad he wanted to hurt someone, and his stepdad told him to punch a tree
I love how empathic you are when you are telling these tragic stories not a lot of true crime TH-camrs or podcasters don’t show sympathy like you do and I find it really enduring ❤ such a tragic case I feel for Eric because of everything he went through with the bullying and the abuse and his father not wanting him I can understand he was angry but that doesn’t give anyone the right to take it out on another person and end their life let alone a child , and I don’t think he should be aloud near children at all I’d hate for something to happen I hope
Eric proves us wrong and stays on the straight at narrow
Thank you for talking about Derrick. Hope you are taking care of yourself. Cases like this are so heartbreaking.
1993 was an unusually bad year for child murders. James Bulger, Polly Klaas, The 3 boys from West Memphis, AR, Derek Robey and a lot more I can’t remember at this moment. I was only 11-12 but I remember all of them. May they all R.I.P.
Way before then there also was Mary bell
I did get emotional watching this one.
I am a mother to a 2 year old I could not imagine this happening. This is absolutely heart breaking.
The way you have got upset throughout the video shows how deeply you care for others.
You are an amazing true crime story teller.
Keep up the good work Danielle xo
Danielle puts sooo much detail in every case, that's why I love her chanel!
I recommend watching Emma Kenny's video on this case as well. She and Danielle are the best for true crime on TH-cam IMO.
Explaining what he went through doesn't condon what he did but it helps understand why he did what he and that it could have been avoidable if was given the help that he needed
So Eric's stepdad was like "I would never sexually abuse someone, I mean I totally did, and I couldn't have done it."

Not everybody reacts to trauma the same way, some do better than others. I came from a violent household too and seen what it can do.
Honestly if I didn’t have the mother I have I very well could have turned into a horribly violent person. She taught me what empathy was and to always put myself in others shoes to understand how my actions affect them. She also was my safe space inside the storm I was going through
@CowgirlGoneJumper this is relatable, my mother was my hero in the abuse the whole time.

Eric doesn't deserve to be free after what he did to that little boy. Agree with me or not, that's fine, but I can't forget what he did and having children under the age of 5 of my own, this case makes me feel terrified of that same possibility happening to my children.
