  • Fishing tips, identification, and what's new with the Lepomis megalotis species complex. We’ll cover how to identify the northern sunfish (Lepomis peltastes) as well as get into this fish’s history and lineage. The details of how to catch a northern sunfish should help knock this fish off your life-list. Lepomis solis, Lepomis aquilensis, Lepomis sp. Ozark, and Lepomis sp. Ouachita are the new proposed species split in the longear species complex.

    Been an Avs fan since they moved to Colorado. Had to plug 'em in this! Also, don't use the photos I pulled for ID on the longear split. Those were the only public domain images I could get on short notice (the Ozark specimen may be admixed.) I will make a longear video in the future that completely covers identification and more! Cheers!

    I don't now how you don't have more followers... Your channel is so informative and educational! I'd love to see when you're able to go out and catch all the Longear species.

      Appreciate that, Johnny! Yeah, maybe one day we'll get some more subs. And, yeah, I'd like to plan on that trip too--maybe this year or the next.

    Excellent video! I'm going to be in Chicago and Minneapolis this summer for work for about three weeks total. I've got about 5 days off between the two. My plan is to rent a car and drive slowly from one city to the other while stopping and fishing. Looking forward to all the cool species I might be able to catch on this trip, the northern sunfish being one of them.

      Thanks! Good luck on that trip. You'll have plenty of opportunity to nab northern sunfishes and other species.

    Great video. I fish the Potomac watershed often and caught my first one in 1986. I was floored by their beauty. I've always thought of them as longears, so this was very informative and interesting. I just found your channel and, while watching mid-way, subbed. I didn't realize the relationship with the Northerns until recently when a fellow NANFA member told me about it. There isn't a lot of info about the Potomac Longear x Northerns on the web, so this was extremely helpful. Thanks again!

      Appreciate the kind comment, Kevin! Yeah, there really isn't much on the Potomac population so I was glad to find a study shedding some light on that. Cheers man!

      @@KNFishingSmarts Hi Koaw. Do you have or know about any more info on the Potomac strain of these fish? There's a little debate about the ID of these fish on the NANFA FB group. Much appreciated. Hope all is well.

    Thanks for the great video! I especially love the creek cam.
    And congrats to your Avs on their Stanley Cup win!!!
    I acquired a small Lepomis for my aquarium in Florida this week. I’m not confident yet if it’s Longear or Dollar, but I kept it because I was fairly certain it is a Dollar.

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, it feels good to get that Cup. Also, if you captured that lepomid in Florida than you're right that it's most likely a dollar. Longear are really only occasionally found in that far north-west section of Florida.

    Love the video! Super informative about Northern Sunfish as well as about the muddy waters that are the Longear complex and how they are maybe hopefully being split up into species (key word being maybe lol). Neat info on some of the retrogressed specimens as well including in the Potomac 😎

    Interesting how DNA capability doesn’t erase confusion over whether a fish is a separate species or not. With hybridization, do fish evolve more rapidly than other creatures? As a non-angler, I find your videos fascinating because they speak to large issues of bio-diversity. Enjoyed this one immensely!

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's all a complicated mess. And really there is no simple answer to your question about hybrids causing evolution to occur quicker. It's all scenario-based. But most typically, no, hybrids don't really cause for rapid evolution because most offspring are infertile or have very minimal success for passing on genes. In the case of the longear/northern, they were still so closely related in their evolution when they had the secondary contact that the genes were easily capable of flowing and staying in future populations.

    Would I be able to count the potomac longear as a new species on my list? (caught 2 today)

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Eh, that's gotta be your call depending on how you do your life-list. It'll probably remain just a "longear" officially, but that is such a unique population that I'd consider it a subsection.

    well dont expect you to break/or melt down on this q...--Im from denmark,- and caught a few sunfish bout a year ago ,-and lately ive been following ur charts on the id of sunfish in general ,heres the thing,- i cant tell for sure ,eventhough u describe the peltastes and the gibbosus on different vids,---i got these sunfish in a 150 gallon tank during vinter and in a smaller pond during summer ,-now i dont know my ass from my albow,- but these fish i got now,,, im not sure what they are,-- pumpkin seed or northerns..hope u can explain it for a dummy like me (love the channel btw)

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you caught those fish in Denmark and they are of the genus Lepomis, then those will be pumpkinseed. No northern sunfish are in Europe.
      The easiest way to tell pumpkinseed from northern sunfish is to look at the size - if the fish are bigger than 5 inches/13 cm then they are probably pumpkinseed.
      There's another comparison chart on my site: koaw.org/pumpkinseed of pumpkinseed vs. northern. If that fails, shoot me a message on my site and I'll try to get back to you so you can email photos.

    So what all Lepomis do we have in the northwest?

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  ปีที่แล้ว

      All the lepomids in the northwest as far as BC, Washington, Oregon, etc. are all introduced. But those are mainly going to be bluegill, redear sunfish, pumpkinseed, and warmouth. Plus, some warmouth are around there.

    Are all the longears in the potomac hybrids or is there some pure northerns or longears?

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far it appears that all specimens should be considered admixed. It would make sense that the admixture happened before the 'longear' ventured into the Potomac zone. However, I'm not saying that with full confidence until I see more genetic analyses. Sorry that isn't a straight yes or no--but I just don't know for sure yet.
