  • Forget what you think you know about protein and muscle.
Dr Gabrielle Lyon is a medical doctor with a revolutionary approach to health, wellness and longevity called muscle-centric medicine. In this episode we break the stereotypes surrounding building muscle; we discuss good and bad protein choices, and we explore how to deal with obesity as a nation.
This is a lesson in what we can all do to improve the long term health of ourselves and our community.

Very Interesting interview, I’m 55 years now and went all Keto around 8 months ago and started training 6 days a week and now I can tell myself that I am in the best shape of my life, weight as much as when I was 20 something but have more muscles. Also, my cognitive functions have increased greatly ; I remember things I read much, much better and lighter so I am the living proof that she is right .

Me too brother (55) but I only started 3 months ago. Plus I was a glutten, type 2 diabetic. Diabetes is practically gone and though I can't see my 6 pack YET. I can feel them, which I wasn't able to do in the last two decades. I started Keto, not to lose weight but to fix my damaged insulin system. But I have lst ALL facial and neck fat, arm fat and leg fat. Plus I have lost about 20% visceral fat. In 3 MONTHS. What an added bonus.

@@truthorpropaganda9001 , Great to hear that man, keep doing it !!
For me is a mindset, I want that my body works as best as long as possible, period. I'm an introvert so spend maybe 100 hours reading about nutrition, keto, vegan , Lyon etc and decided to go keto cause it works for me ( and love cheese way too much ) I also realised that the amount of protein is crucial not only for my muscle growth but for my health .
A few years ago, you tell me to eat fat and I tell you your are crazy ha ha ha , now I eat bacon and dip my toast ( keto bread ) into the remaining fat .... I still can't believe that fat is the best energy source from all .
It took me around 1 year to clearly show my 6 pack and I am working on my 8 th pack ... some day ha ha

@@franzjosefmueller-alban509 Yep also a cheese lover. And love nuts also. So a lifestyle that promotes parmesian, macadamia nuts and walnuts was a glorius find. And also like you brother, I found I have to eat at least 30-40 percent protein or I just dont feel right. I eat very few carbs. Practically zero except in the cheese, nuts and unsweetened cocoa. You know everybodys metabolism is different but one meal I find that makes me feel amazing is 3 free range eggs fried in grass fed butter and a can of asparagus with some more grass fed butter melted on it and cooked in the microwave. I actually just dump the eggs over the aspargus and eat it all together in a bowl. For me, this meal is super food as far as energy, and just how good i feel.
Take care as well brother. Imagine how we would look if we would have had this knowledge in our 20's...lol.

The amount of muscle that you have going into old age [helps] determine longevity. As mentioned in the other two comments, sarcopenia is a natural occurrence to some degree, so developing sufficient bone structure and muscle mass as a younger adult is important. Sufficient, optimal, and jacked are not synonyms.

Fantastic information, as a 75 year old former pro athlete, I continue to believe in the power of discomfort.
Today and for the last 10 years I pedal a bike taxi in SanFrancisco on the Embarcadero.
Pedaling 6 people up to Union square or china town delivers a level of burning discomfort few people ever experience, this helps me maintain surges of growth hormone, besides the randomness of events thrown at me throughout the day keeps my reflexes and therefore sensory mechanisms sharp resulting in more brain plasticity.
On the off days more intra muscular coordination drills working large major muscle groups.
Thanks for the info, as I’m now eating more animal proteins than I have in 20 years of a semi vegetarian lifestyle, with definite greater recovery strength gains and energy.

I have been hearing this stuff for maybe three or four months. Smatterings of it here and there, dribs and drabs, when I heard that it also affected COGNITION, it had my attention. I spend about 7 hours a week in the gym and am trying to literally increase my muscle mass, and I have done so. I have been increasing my lifts right along. Presumably this is regarding more strength Vs. More mass. I do know that you generally get some strength as a result as mass. Plus I do HIIT style training. I used to weigh over a hundred pounds more than now. I still want to lose about 45 more pounds. I am going to follow this stuff so when I tell people that you need to build muscle so you won’t “Lose your marbles” I know where to point them. Amazing concepts, I am blown away! Insufficient muscle leads to fatty deposits. Also she used a term that I have been using when in the context of age and physical conditioning: “Can I improve?”, I always can, and plan on making it one of my life’s goals.

I can honestly say after almost 5 years carnivore my brain is sharper, my memory is better and my rational thinking is not influenced by false fears and feelings.
I saw a slide in my thinking and reasoning skills in my late 40s. I was having issues making life choices and had really fuzzy short term memory issues. Now at 65 and almost 5 years carnivore, I have people coming to me just to get input into their lives. I am being sought out just for advice. This floors me as even 5 years ago I would have considered myself barely smarter than a 5th grader. Carnivore healed my body and my mind.
    Carbohydrates were my problem.
    No more, I eat none.
    Is it for everyone?
I believe so. But 95% of the people I tell about being strict carnivore think om crazy. Yet they refuse to enter into an honest debate, simply because their defense of eating carbohydrates is.... I cant live without them...
But a cold hard fact of life is carbohydrates are NOT essential.
And boys and girls, you cannot escape that FACT.

@Dust storm - uh...maybe a bit misinformed, there, about the need for carbs, I think?
Watch Dr. Lyon interview her mentor, Dr.. Donald Layman about carbs. I just watched it. The segment is called, 'The key to carbohydrates."
You will need to be open to the possibility that you may be thinking about some of your new dietary beliefs in the wrong way. S o, I'd recommend you watch that interview with an open mind.
I was a vegetarian for 6 years (animal lover... believing that animal protein is the same as plant protein - not fair to the animals, blah, blah).
And then one day I came upon an interview of Dr. Lyon on Tom Bilyeu's podcast. I felt so insulted (& defensive!) that she was promoting eating animal protein, and lots of it!
But then I realized...'Hey she's talking about me! (skinny fat) a term my own (Navy Seal) son had ascribed to me, and I think that the host in that interview, or maybe someone in the comments section probably used that term also 'skinny fat', I really sat up and took notice! So, instead of switching off the interview, I realized (because she is heavily credentialed and made so much sense, to me,, that... if I didn't change my diet, and immediately I was headed for a future of sarcopenia -at best - and, at worst, a whole host of medical problems.
I felt like you, also. I was getting sick alot and often had brain fog. I've always heavily exercised, but my regimin had gradually fallen off. I just did not have the energy to keep that going consistently.
Dr. Lyon mentioned in that interview that someone like me (I'm paraphrasing here) - but that someone not getting enough quality protein in their diet and feeling 'off' because of it - and then begin eating the amount of protein their body needed - would feel so much healthier as early as their first high protein meal. And I did! And I haven't looked back!
But I also believe that micronutrients in the way of lots of vegetables - including all the 'colorful' veggies, as well as colorful fruits, Plus quality animal protein in good measure, AND resistence training - is the way to go.
Your proclaiming that 'carbs are not essential to humans' - that's pretty over the top, IMO.
Sounds like you may be a 'convert'(?) - from heavy carbs to now NO carbs, and that bc now you feel so great on the 'carnovire diet' (I have to assume that's how you are eating now, the carnivore diet?) - that the pendulum has swung way over in the opposite direction for you.
If I had to guess, I'd say that yes, your overdoing the carbs & ignoring your protein needs heavily contributed to your past brain brain fog .
But your diet was way out of balance then. So, now you've swung way over in the other direction with the belief that all carbs are 'bad' and are unessential for everyone.
Dr. Lyon has never implied that carbs are 'unessential'. I follow her regularly and even took one of her online courses to educate myself about following a muscle-centric diet & lifestyle. And I feel great!
Recall what she has to say here that not all scientists have integrity, and some are very agenda driven. The carnivore diet is one of those fairly new diet trends, and we don't have any data on long term effects, yet, for the Carnivore diet.
Many people, like you, feel great on the Carnivore diet. But how many of them, like you, were unhealthy bc they were neglecting their protein needs and overdoing it on carbs?
Anyway, good for you that you got off the carbs and increased your protein and as a result were able to shake the brain fog (I can def relate to how fantastic it feels to shake the brain fog!) I am grateful I wasn't so 'foggy' that I switched Dr. Lyon off when I first came across Her!
But as far as swinging so far in the other direction and adopting the belief that all carbs are unessential - for everyone - I just do not agree. I think it's an unnecessary extreme.
Did you hear Dr. Lyon say her Navy Seal husband's diet includes around 200g protein & 200g carbs daily? That's an extreme example- as he is constantly training as a Seal - but still...cutting ALL carbs from the diet is not necessary in order to enjoy the benefits of switching to a high protein way of eating.
IMO, completely cutting out ALL carbs from one's diet -long term - could eventually reap the wrong kind of effects.

It was followed by a 1.5K swim towing the log. At he bike transition area I did DT which is 5 RFT of 12 deadlifts, 9 hang power cleans and 6 push jerks, using 135 pound, then o to a 10K mountain bike ride with the 70 pound log strapped to the back pack. You have to get your inflammation under control or lowered drastically before effective training can be done. Get rid of seed oils from the diet to do this. High omega 6 fattyacids in the diet wreak havoc and inflammation throughout the body.

In reference to gaining more and more muscle, for longevity there's a law of diminishing return, so look at bodybuilders most of them die at 40 and those that don't die usually have had heart issues and have had their hearts replaced. Arnold Schwarzenegger has now had three heart surgeries and this new heart he has seems to allow him to become as active as he used to be but he doesn't build muscle he's doing a lot of cardio with some resistance training but not for the purpose of building muscle. Whether you're carrying 300 lb of muscle or fat your heart can't tell the difference. Again, in reference to Blue zones we don't see hugely muscular people, we see good muscle tone, but nothing exaggerated or out of the ordinary. In fact most of these cultures seem to be physically active most of the day which if you ever dealt with an anabolic or highly muscular person, after 35 minutes they're exhausted.

Eat a balance of veggies, fruit, protein (eggs/meat/poultry), maybe add some starches like potatoes if you are regularly physically active, or maybe some rice. In a way, your average diet and serving size should be in line with your activity level...

That was a disappointing moment in the interview; pea protein has phytoestrogen (less than soy) but the role that phytoestrogen plays in humans is different than estrogen. @@artiexus Peas appear to contain very low levels of phytoestrogens. Pretty sure peas have been cultivated for eating for a long time, unlike soy which was grown only to refresh the soil but considered poisonous.
There is research that list the levels of phytoestrogens: _"Phytoestrogen content of fruits and vegetables commonly consumed in the UK based on LC-MS and 13C-labelled standards"_
As far as I know phytoestrogens are there to fend off insects and animals. Insects can't have too much of it, while mammals are able to handle it better due to more mass/evolution.

The reason we can't tell an exact muscle volume to body mass to brain function is because it's much more complex than that so we have extraneous variables that we can't control for at this point. For instance genetics, or disease, or trauma to the central nervous system which includes the brain, etc however in general we know that not necessarily the more muscle but also the less fat on your body results in clear thinking better memory, better decision-making, especially under stress, etc so just as important as having muscle it's also important to reduce the amount of fat but once you go under 8% fat, especially on my age there are other health considerations like fatigue so generally 8 to 10% fat would work for somebody like me but it may not work for somebody like you. Again, the complexity of the issue

Animal agriculture does have significant environmental impacts, and many argue that it contributes to environmental degradation and climate change.
Greenhouse gas emissions: Animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock production, particularly cattle, produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Additionally, clearing land for grazing or growing animal feed releases carbon dioxide, contributing to deforestation and climate change.
Land and water use: Animal agriculture requires vast amounts of land and water. Raising livestock necessitates large areas for grazing or cultivating animal feed crops. This leads to deforestation, habitat loss, and soil degradation. Furthermore, animal agriculture consumes substantial amounts of water for animal hydration and crop irrigation.
Water pollution: The concentration of livestock in factory farming operations generates significant amounts of waste. The runoff from these operations can pollute water bodies, contributing to water pollution and eutrophication.
Biodiversity loss: The expansion of animal agriculture encroaches on natural habitats, leading to the loss of biodiversity. Deforestation for grazing or feed crop cultivation reduces habitat availability for various plant and animal species, contributing to species extinction.
Antibiotic resistance: The routine use of antibiotics in animal agriculture to promote growth and prevent diseases contributes to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This poses risks to human health as well.
