I have been weight lifting for decades. At 71 I can still do anything I used to. Don’t even think of I can lift anything. Cardio I am a late adopter. Started running six years ago and now get in 75 vigorous minutes a week and it has transformed my health. Cardio endurance means you can hike, walk for hours shopping with your young friends, run up stairs.
I do have to try to fit in enough protein but when I do I feel the difference in satiety and ease of weight control. Hair and nails improve too. Whey protein is a godsend.

You know ER Physician Doug McGuff has actually already been making this case for atleast the last 15 years concerning muscle being an important endocrine organ when he originally wrote his book on High Intensity Training "Body By Science". The term he used to describe this increase in function was creating "Physiologic Headroom". If you do a youtube search for it he's given like 3 talks on the subject.
You might want to consider trying to interview him and get his perspective on it.

Just found out about your book through Dr J which lead me to look for this channel. Love the fact you're speaking the truth even though every "I've been lifting weights for 40 years and this is click bait" so called expert has some ignorant opinion on outdated science. Just got the book and already love it! Up to date info based on facts.

I am turning 41 next month, and going through perimenopause. I just found your you tube channel. You are such a blessing! The first of many videos I've watched, and the only one that does not have a room and gloom message to us women who are going through this natural life change. It's so freeing to know we are not inevitably doomed to gain weight, get Alzheimer's, heart disease or osteoporosis. Every video I've watched seems to promote HRT and gives no hope otherwise. I don't want to go that route since I lost 2 friends to breast cancer directly resulting from taking synthetic hormones.

You know, Dr. Lyon, I think your approach is something that has the potential to transform the lives of obese people. And in so many comments in comment sections in many videos, I have defended you against people who have directed ad hominem arguments regarding your own physical attributes (allegations of surgically obtained perfection, etc.). But in one respect, I really wish you would reconsider your own weight vs muscularity. I’m 73 and 3 years of weight work have given me biceps I’m proud of. (I’m 173 pounds, which now is changing since I began a modified carnivore regimen (raw dairy, some fruit)). But you, of a similar height, weigh 110, I think you’ve said. That strikes me as underweight, and your extremely taut face shows deprivation. If skeletal muscle is so good, why don’t you have more of it? If you work towards increased strength, I should think you would bulk up more, without even aiming at hypertrophy. I think you shouldn’t feel that as a diet guru, you have to present yourself as slim and toned to perfection. If you were to become ill, do you have a reserve of fat and muscle you can afford to lose? Sure doesn’t look like it. You’re so brilliant but it looks to me as if you are still abiding by unspoken concepts of feminine perfection, and a fear of appearing masculinized.
I suspect you would be healthier with 10% more body fat and 10% or more extra muscle. No expert.
I’m a singer, and I have no desire to weigh less than about 140, because the voice needs a certain amount of avoirdupois to remain “big” and “rich”. I just want to substitute muscle for fat. You have a different kind of life, but please don’t keep striving to stay skinny. I just don’t think it’s ideally healthy to live in such a way that you have no reserve of fat or muscle that could AFFORD to lose. With all respect, and wishing you all the best.

Congratulations on your new book! Just received but am also binging your podcasts over the past week. Joined your support group session in January and have been following your recommendations and feel great. A tip on how to boost protein per meal, I keep pasteurized pasture raised eggs (sous vide @135 degrees F for 1 hour) to add as protein "bombs" in hot coffee or tea drinks (makes them creamy if you whip) or add to avocado/whey isolate smoothies. Thanks so much! ♥

Received book yesterday. I was unfortunately thrown into medical menopause Nov 17 2022 due to endometrial cancer requiring me to have surgery for a total hysterectomy bilateral salpingo oopherectomy and sentinal lymph node mapping. I am 54 and at time of surgery i was 142 and now 156. Going wrong way!!! I am determined to get strong. I was released by my Doctor in April of this year to start walking. Started with 1 mile per day then now up to 5 mile per day and then doctor releaaed to start weight training. I started weight training 4 days per week in August of this year and am now trying to get a minimum of 120 grams of protein per day. Looking back i barely ate 30 grams of protein per day. I am also looking into macro counting. Also waiting on results from my hormone blood work and may start bio identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) Looking forward to reading the book and learning all that I can. God Bless!

    • @barbarafairbanks4578
      @barbarafairbanks4578 ปีที่แล้ว

@cathybell4295 - dont wait too long to begin BHRT. Our hormone receptors start shrinking after menopause, because... 'Use it ir lose it'
      Your body's estrogen,
et al, receptors will shut down, sooner rather than later. When this happens they can no longer 'receive ' circulating' androgenic hormones. - and any exogenous replacement of hormones will continue to circulate in your bloodstream, because - no place to go if they cannot bind to their receptors.
IMO, get going with BHRT ASAP before your hormone receptors are no longer intact.😉 (it's only been 1 year. I wouldn't let it slip into 2 years.)

Me and my wife has been doing Doug McGuff's big 3 split from his book "Body by Science." Doing only 1 set per exercise to muscle failure only once aweek. We do an omad carnivore way of eating. We have been growing muscle and leaning out. We have been do the routine for a little more than a year. We have gained a good deal of lean mass and lost a considerable amount of fat we are in our late 30's. The only supplement we use is creatine monohydrate.

    • @barbarafairbanks4578

That's so interesting.. thanks for posting. Not heard of McGuff or his book, but you are the 2nd post here (so far) mentioning him. I'll definitely look into him & his book😊
What do you know about taking CreatineM close to caffeine?
I've been adding 5g to my coffee every a.m., since I began taking it. Don't recall exactly why I began taking it that way....possibly a fitness influencer mentioned that how they take it, so I copied their method.
Then, Thomas DeLauer (YT fitness influencer) mentioned a Creatine Monohydrate study in a recent podcast (he was interviewing Dr. Lyon, btw).
They got on the subject of supplementing Creatine and he drops this bomb🤯 - he 'saw a study' that concluded exogenous Creatine can be cancelled out if taken too close to caffeine - because Creatine's pathway in the body is via binding with adenosine receptors (as does caffeine).
He was so maddingly vague about details - did not cite the study - and did not answer when I asked him to cite the study in comments' section, so I could follow up.
He said he 'thought' that the study showed that caffeine in the adenosine receptors blocked Creatine from entering - (thereby blocking Creatine's pathway -but he 'wasn't exactly sure.')
He also seemed to be speculating that we should 'separate caffeine ingestion by one hour, from Creatine.' Which, imo, is a ridiculous assumption bc (per Huberman) caffeine remains on Adenosine receptors for hours, and blocks the adenosine moloecule, itself, from entering.
I don't follow DeLauer, and now I know why, lol. 😅 He is, of course, no scientist. I just happened to come across his interview of Dr. Lyon in my YT feed. And I do follow Dr. Lyon.
As far as DeLauer's casual mention of this 'study'...well, even I would know better than to casually drop a bomb like that in a podcast without at least having my facts straight, or citing the actual study. 🙄

❤ Thank you, Dr. Lion, for your valuable insights! Ever since I began incorporating 45-50g of high-quality protein into my first and second meals, along with a small snack like a green apple with a tablespoon of almond butter in between, I have experienced significant improvements in both my physical and mental well-being. Additionally, I have developed a consistent habit of engaging in 30 minutes of elliptical exercise, and my strength and ability to perform resistance training exercises are progressively improving each day.

I'm female, 68! I was a farm worker! a cheer leader all through high school. In college got into the drug scene...I did finish college, lol. At 30 got into the gym. By 32 I was competing. at 36 had a child as a single parent. I quit working out to give time to my new career and mothering. I worked out off and on mainly off. At 66 I started up again. At 68 I look better now at 125 maybe 17 to 20 % body fat. Whatever fat I have is a little area around my belly button. Not enough to get leaner...I watched 60 or masters competitions...i could have won! I'm off season and I look and feel 15 years younger. i can do pullups! The boys just say, "Your Strong". ME: Not bad for 68! I actually let my hair go grey, too many boys flirting...I could be their mom and some grandma! hahahaha I have friends of all ages. I earned my voice. EAT RIGHT, EXCERCISE compete against your self.

Mat_7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Gmom, hop to 56:38-- at 78, you can still add muscle!! Adequate Dietary Protein= 1gram of protein for each pound of body weight you want to weigh, so I suggest that you eat 100g of animal protein each day - eggs, salmon, cod, steak, bacon, sardines, cottage cheese! And hopefully get can go from 85# to 100# by lifting weights and adding calories via protein with its naturally occurring fat over the calories from processed carbs like toast and jelly, Fritos, or Peanut M&Ms (that I know are hidden in your sofa table drawer)

I would love to see people leave a link to some good macro/food tracking sites and sample breakfast plans with 50 grams of protein.
Thank you Dr Lyon for everything you are doing to teach us!!

I'm a 63yr old female. I eat carnivore/keto and walk, run, lift weights roller blade, rock climbing and on and on. I can still out lift my 28 year old daughter who is stronger than all of her friends. I had a near fatal car accident when I was 25 and was on what I realized was going to be a lifetime of pain killers and muscle relaxers if I didn't take matters in my own hands. One morning when I got up to put on my pants and fell over on the bed I decided enough was enough. I joined a gym, probably bought most if not all of Jane Fonda videos and now even though I'm not 100%, no one would ever know the broken bones and nerve damage I have in right hand. Btw in my youth people thought I was a body builder. I tried to join my daughter hip hop class but she said no way 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Great book, Dr. Lyon! I am 61, post menopausal. Is it better to recover 48 or 72 hours for full-body weight workouts? I see both, but would love your professional opinion. Thank you!

I've bought your book and agree with everything you've said but I'm trying to follow it and would like some help with the exercises. Can you do a quick video showing people how to do them correctly please, it would have helped to have some diagrams in the book for people who are new to weight training? I'm probably going to have to get a programme from somewhere else as I don't really know how to do yours! Also, if you ever reprint the book, it would be really good to have a weekly shopping list for each diet as it just took me over an hour to go through every single recipe and work out all of the ingredients I'm going to need for every meal. The best programmes always supply a shopping list. Thank you! :o)

lean tissue! focus! Im 43 and illness and obesity induced-disease free.3 months ago - I started to MOVE, high intensity strength training 4-5 XWeek I am broke and still concerned about the quality of non inflammatory food intake. I love moving but my thinning hair is a sign of possibly not eating ENOUGH. My nutrition and food science education is another advantage, I am here for the experiences and longevity processes. What is your new book offering woman in particualar?

You don't need to "progress" from bands to free weights. There are enough bands (and brands) with a variety of resistance levels for upper and lower body.

    • @julesroussel3
      @julesroussel3 ปีที่แล้ว

Or you could just start with lighter free weights. Either way.

Bands are great! It’s just a bit challenging to measure the resistance accurately to track and advance your performance.

Try the X3 resistance bands system from Jacquish Biomedical.

Question for anyone who has purchased the book. I’m debating between buying the actual book or the audible. I think I’ll have a better chance of actually getting through it on audible but I was wondering if there is any reason I would want to have the actual book-like does it contain work out plans or anything like that, that I would want to have in writing? Thank you in advance!

This is an excellent interview. Lots of information to take or leave depending on your beliefs and wallet!
I am one of the poster children for Botox! Lol I started doing Botox back around 2003. I did it consistently for three months for the first couple of years then I started stretching it out to four months, five months and then near the end I was getting to six months. in 2020, when we had the lockdowns, I stopped going, of course. Then there was no vaccine for Covid etc. by this time, I’m 73. I am now 76 and have been three years without Botox. None of my wrinkles have come back. Are used to do it around my eyes for my crows feet and my forehead. I currently have no wrinkles there at all, I do have some around my lips and there is nothing that I want to do to address that. I am going back for Botox soon to do some around my eyes because I love the lift and the open I look that I get because my eyes are so deep set. I worked in the cosmetic industry, and people were always asking me what eye cream I used! of course, I would always tell them the truth. When women would tell me that they would never do that, that it was poison, blah, blah blah, I would always tell them don’t! It’s personal choice! Your vision, your life, do what you want! be natural, don’t be natural, it’s a reason we live in a free country! Just don’t waste your time judging other people. It’s really sad and a slippery slope.
When it comes to differences of opinion, I came across Sigmund Freud’s description called the narcissism of small differences. It says that the idea that the more a relationship or community shares commonalities, the more likely the people in it are to engage in interpersonal feud, and mutual ridicule, because of hypersensitivity to minor differences perceived in others.
    Yes! 💕
