How to Get a Fussy Dog to Eat (top tips for picky dogs!)

  • Is your dog fussy and you're just asking yourself how do you get a fussy dog to eat? Well stick around and in this article I give you my top tips to get your fussy dog eating the food you want them to.
    Are they actually hungry?
    It's very easy to overestimate the amount of food that we think that our dogs should eat, especially if we're giving them a biscuit kibble. This is because many are actually really energy dense. We just put down how much we think they should be getting and often we are probably be putting a little bit too much. To make matters worse I also feel that the packaging actually does slightly overestimate the amount that we should be feeding.
    They are not fussy, they are just full.
    The next thing to ask with any fussy eater is "are they actually healthy".
    If you're dog has always eaten really well and all of a sudden they've gone off their food, they're a little bit picky, they're not eating with their normal voracious appetite then that might suggest that they're not healthy.
    Are they vomiting? Have they got diarrhea? Are they starting to drink a little bit more than normal? Do you see them urinating an awful lot more frequently? Again, these are all signs that there might be something wrong. Are they actually losing weight and are they losing weight quite quickly? Again this would be a real flag that something's wrong.
    We can then move to the mouth as oral health can obviously play a role in your dog being fussy if there is pain or discomfort when eating. Have they got lots of yellow plaque and tartar over their teeth? Is the line of their teeth and gums really red and inflamed with marked gingivitis. The gums might even be bleeding in some cases! Has your dog got a broken tooth? Is their breath really smelly?
    If you've noticed any of these things or have any other concerns then you should definitely be getting your dog checked out by your veterinarian.
    Once we've established that our dog is not being overfed, that they're healthy and that they really are just fussy then we need to go about getting them onto the diet that we want.
    To start with, you need to decide what diet you want to feed your dog. There's a lot of different things that go into this which is far too much to go into today. But once you've decided that and worked out how much you should be feeding then pop that down in the bowl and leave it down for 20 minutes. If your dog doesn't eat it, doesn't touch it then just take up that food bowl. A few hours later, pop your dogs bowl down again. They'll be that much hungrier and they'll likely start eating. You might though have to leave it down for another 20 minutes, take it up, put it away and again repeat the process.
    What you really must never do though is take up an uneaten food bowl and immediately replace it with something else. What this does is actually teach your dog that by turning their nose up and refusing their normal food they're going to get something really tasty.
    An alternative technique to get your fussy dog to eat, and one that can work well, is to actually find something that your dog likes. Any food that your dog enjoys eating although preferably of a similar type to what you ideally want to feed (e.g. wet or kibble). What you can then do is slowly transition them on to the diet that you actually want them to eat over 3-4 weeks.

    I kinda made the same mistake with my dog. He is a big boy but I realized around 6 months he was loosing weight. He has a diet of kibble, raw/cooked meat and leftovers. After looking into his food i gave him i realized he stopped eating his kibble and other types of food. He literally only ate the meat. He just smelled and gave one lick to the other foods and went on his way. I know he eats more as when he was a puppy he pretty much ate anything. After realising he was very picky after trying every single method to get him to eat. The last resort which i didnt want to resort to was to just no feed him. After about 3 days of no food. I gave him kibble and other types of cooked vegetable and of course he ate everything.
    After doing this in intervals like 3 then 2 then 1 day, he must have realized this type of food was his only option. Now he eats any type of food pretty much everyday day. He got all his normal weight back and is now healthy as can be.

    I have tried every trick in the book. I tried many types of foods. He gets bored and quits maximum after 2 days. Even if I feed him a steak!
    I got him to the vet twice and in both times they say he is perfectly healthy. So I know it is an acquired behaviour.
    The more options I give him, the worse and more difficult he gets. He is killing me with frustration truly.

    My dog will choose to starve and vomit bile before he eats. After trying all kinds of well cooked meats without any seasoning (chicken/turkey/salmon/eggs) he will basically say yes or no to whatever is on the menu for the day

      Roasted Baby Chicken actually I’ve kind of found a way around his picky eating!! Maybe it can help you too. So I buy him a standard bag of hard food (whatever brand they like best) then I started mixing it with half a can of soft food. So for the first week I have maybe 1/3 of a cup of hard food with just about half of soft food (warmed in the microwave, he doesn’t like cold food). Mixed and served. I’d have to show him that the soft food is tasty on its own so I’d give him a little with my hand, and if he didn’t want to eat at the moment I’d just tap his snoot with the food. This forces him to lick it and taste it. Then that’s when he will realize it tastes good. You have to remember dogs are super sensitive to smells and taste too. So he’s bound to like SOMETHING in the food. Then I’ll do that a little more just to open his appetite and then I’ll put some on the floor. He doesn’t like his food on the floor but he will choose to eat it rather than have that area dirty. (At least that’s how I characterize him to feel). Then I just walk away and let him do his thing. Eventually I realized this trick will make him eat EVERYTHING. It’s only been 8 weeks since I wrote the initial post, but that desperation from both my dog and I has gone and he eats his food at each meal. I’m now doing a little less than one cup of hard, with 1/3-1/4 of soft

      Google User i have already used wet canned food as her topper , but one day she’ll love it and finish it, the next when i decided to stock up her new favorite toppers, it’s the day she refuse to eat it. And the cycle goes on and on. I tried various type to find what she likes but ended up just throwing all her food to the bin because she only picked what she wants. One thing for sure that she loves plain boiled chicken as toppers. thankyou for your suggestions btw.

      Roasted Baby Chicken oh I forgot to mention! I buy different flavors (the patte kind, not the chunky soupy stuff) of the higher end brands (I do take into account the contents and see where I can do better price wise for decent content) and switch it each time he finishes one. So after 3 meals he will have a new one. If he doesn’t eat it I just wrap it, put it in the fridge and wait till the next feeding time or next day!! And repeat the same process each time. But I had to stop myself from adding more food, or giving something entirely new because they tend to begin expecting it from us. But we love them and it’s just so hard 😫

    Goodjob on this video! It was very informative and I subscribed to your channel and newsletter! But I have a question concerning the program. I've tried leaving the food out for 20min and taking it away later, but I noticed that my dog throws up bile. I assume this is from not eating. I took her to the vet a couple days ago and the vet said she was healthy. Should I still stick with the program or start on a new food? I usually give new wet food if she doesn't eat her old wet food. When I give her new food she eats it voraciously but then begins to slow down after eating it for a couple of days. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She shouldn't really vomit from just missing a meal or two. There's nothing wrong with switching between different diets, and having them on rotation. It's more of an issue if your end up only feeding human food or single ingredient meals (like nothing but plain chicken). If you only want her on 1 particular diet, you could try adding just a little bit of something else to it to see if that will get her eating again. If the vomiting persists or she is acting unwell then it would be worth giving your vet a call as well

    Hi, I have a 1 year old Shih tzu. She had a phase where she vomited anything she ate and had diarrhea so we took her to the vets and they said it was probably Gastroenteritis. They gave us some medicine and food that we’ve been trying to give her although it is still quite hard to get her to take all of them everyday. She seemed to get better for the first few days but she has vomited about 2 times. When we called the vet they told us to continue giving her the food they gave us although she won’t eat for the most of it. She does eat a bit but certainly not enough. Usually about 2 tablespoons twice a day and shes 10 lbs and sometimes does not wanna have one of the 2 meals. They told us we could come to do bloodwork and then a scan of that doesn’t work but it cost 220 $ each on top of the 350 $ we already paid. at first they had told us the scan and bloodwork was 40 $ but now they changed their story. It is so much money on top of it they’d have to get more done. They also told us to not feed her any more human food because it used to be almost her whole diet ( we usually fed her rice and chicken) since she would not accept her dog food and this could cause further problems. At the moment I’m trying to feed her twice a day by hand instead of 3 times in her bowl and take her on walks before her meals. Is there anything you suggest trying to get her to eat?

    I have a corgi/chihuahua and he is 2 years old. He just recently had his teeth cleaned because ever since he was 6 weeks old he would only eat small portions of his dry dog food either soft from soaking it in water or with table scraps in it like chicken or other various meats. I’ve always had to entice him to eat his dry dog food by putting something in it. He obviously has learned to manipulate me at a very young age and I’ve been trying to stop it. About a year ago he started not eating his dry food at all no matter how many times I would switch his dry dog food or what I would put in it to entice him, nothing worked and he started vomiting bile almost everyday from not having anything on his stomach. It got so bad I had to put him on and appetite stimulation medicine for a while it worked but then was not a fan of the side effects so I was back to square one. I am currently soaking his food in hot water until completely soft everyday two times a day and hand feeding it (sometimes force feeding) it to him just so he will have something on his belly and not throw up bile. I have asked every vet he’s been to and trainers and he is a healthy dog, he has been checked out several times has a clean bill of health, they just call him a bilious vomiter. I have even tried the starvation method a few times and attempted to follow some of these same tips and nothing seems to work. The last time I tried to do something like this he held out for 5 days. He was only being introduced to the dry food I wanted him on I wasn’t giving him scraps or treats. I just want him to eat his dry dog food like a normal dog and am at a complete loss of what to do and it is driving me crazy. Please help.

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normal dry dog food isn't a whole load better than wet food for teeth so if that's the main reason you want to change then I wouldn't stress about it. It's good that he seems healthy, but it really isn't a normal thing to vomit just because of an empty stomach. Really I would start off by getting him used to eating without you force feeding or coaxing by taking up what he doesn't eat and trying again with the same soaked biscuits an hour or so later. Only when he is eating that (and bear in mind that because of his size he really doesn't need to eat all that much) should you start to gradually add less and less water so that after 4 weeks or even longer you are not adding any at all. Good luck

    • @haleigh1995
      @haleigh1995 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our Pets Health Thank you for the insight, I will try because I’m not sure what else to do. He also has a gland problem and his vet recommended that he be on a high fiber food which I think has helped tremendously with his vomiting problem and that I also am making sure he has food on his stomach. I’m sure the food isn’t all that appetizing for him to want to eat on his own either but like I’ve said I’ve tried just about everything, I know he is conditioned to eating soft food but I would like to change this not only for my sanity but also because it is very time consuming not just being able to leave the bowl of food on the floor and him actually eat it on his own. I feel like if I could find a high fiber food that was actually tasty for him he’d be more apt to eat it. But I’ve tried several brands and he just won’t go near it no matter the taste or smell. And like I said if I give him time and wait until he tries he will hold out so long he will make himself sick. And that’s not fun for anyone, it’s just sad that he will literally wait until the point to where he is so hungry that he will throw up bile.

      my dog does the same thing. he holds out but barfs in between meals. it is super frustrating how stubborn he is. now that it is spring, he eats grass to fill up on that to hold off the bile. he may eat once a day, but bothers me until he can go outside and eat grass so he can feel better. super annoying. he used to keep me up all night with his stomach issues too, so he was on pecid ac for that. but that isn't enough to hold him off all night. if he just ate, he wouldn't have the problem. if only they understood that. doesn't help he has all kinds of food allergies too, mostly to things in kibble like flaxseed, beef, soy, and beet pulp. Did you ever find a solution?

      If that worked then gradually reduce the amount you are adding and you should have success. It's important that you know for sure your dog is otherwise well, but if they are, missing a few meals won't do them any harm. Good luck

    My dog is 5 years old and we have been struggling everyday to feed him. He loves his food because if we feed him in a fun way he will eat the amount that he needs, but also wants more. We have to be really exited and we have to throw the food around the house for him to eat. One kibble at a time. If we put it in a bowl or put too much in front of him, (3 kibbles at a time) he refuses to eat. The same with wet food. We have tried many techniques, but none of them have been successful. I can’t feed him the way we are right now, it’s taking up too much time. One feeding takes about an hour. Our veterinarian told us it was nothing wrong with him and that he would eventually give in and eat, but he will go days without eating. It’s been like this since he was a puppy. What should I do? Just a side note, a family member is a qualified dog trainer, and even he struggles to see a solution. We tried having him over for three months to help us feed the dog, but it just never worked.

    Hi there... so my dog got giardia a few months ago but I didn't realise it at the time and he became very fussy during this period, and I fell victim to buying loads of different brands to try out and have maybe taught him this fussy behaviour. I found a food about 2 months ago that I'm really happy with it, it's great quality and when for the first couple of weeks he absolutely loved it, but he then started going off it and I'm assuming its because he is waiting for me to change it up again. My question is, if I do your method of leaving the food on the floor for only 20 minutes at a time and he starts to eat it again because he's hungry, will he eventually go back to eating it normally twice a day the way he used to or will he always hold out for something better and not finish his food?

    Omg my chihuahua /8 months, he is a picky eater... In the morning, he doesn't eat anything, first time around lunch, even that is a little. At five o'clock he eats a little more granules, but in the evening he eats better, but even then some goodies and carrots must be mixed in there. I don't know how to teach him to eat pellets so that he eats them by himself, not one at a time from the hand, he often refuses pellets, I'm already changing four types. How much should a chihuahua eat per day and what do you recommend, if sometimes he doesn't want to eat anything all day, while I know he would eat treats, he also messes around in the kitchen... Any advice will help. Thanks! Hello from Slovakia.

    this was such a great video!! my dog Cody won't eat the same food more than 2 days his whole life. so for years we paniced and gave him anything to get him to eat. However... 6months ago I stopped all commercial food because I don't agree with it or how sick it made him for years. So I cook his food at home: organic grass-fed ground beef 85/15, al-dente finely chopped broccoli + spinach all cooked medium well.i even taste it and its good. then I pour nutritional yeast and cod liver oil once cooled then store in fridge. ANYWAY he refuses to eat his same food after first day. so my fam will sneak him scraps since they say its cruel to "starve him" by taking up uneaten food. so my question is even *when they Don't give him scraps* and I give him 2 tries of the food and he still doesn't eat. what should I do? or how can I go about it? the vet says he's healthy

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Following these strategies should really help, but it is important that the whole family is on board. Sneaking him treats and scraps is not doing anyone any favors and makes your efforts a complete waste of time. A healthy dog that doesn't eat for a few days is not a big problem, so it's good that you've had him checked over by your vet.
      Good luck and let me know how you get on!

I feel her kibble with (once in awhile) A5 JAPANESE WAGYU BEEF, salmon, free range organic feed chicken / or lamb cutlets, Australian extra lean beef mince with spinach, broccoli, carrots and blueberries. She still not eat....sometimes you see them like kids, where you have to chase the little kid to feed them. If she eat her food daily, I'll be over the moon. She won't touch raw or freeze foods. HI i have two cats, whats the proper feed i should give them. i mix it

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tricky to make generalisations without more details. If they are similar ages and healthy then I would feed them a premium diet based on their life stage (I feed mine royal canin neutered female). A wet food is never wrong to feed cats and is definitely beneficial if cats develop certain conditions such as cystitis or kidney failure. If these aren't a concern and feeding a wet diet doesn't suit your lifestyle then a quality kibble should be fine. Whatever you feed it is important to feed the right amount to prevent obesity which is very common in cats and can lead to diabetes and arthritis especially. I have more videos on these topics as well as a diet calculator on my website if you are interested. Hope that helps!

      Some dogs really do just eat slowly and are happy to graze. I've just rewritten my blog post on this topic here - ourpetshealth.com/info/how-to-get-your-fussy-dog-to-eat

    I have been asking my vet and specialists since day 1 last fall if the teeth are part of the problem. They keep saying “no dogs live to be 15 with gun disease” I’m like “okay but her breathe smells and its uncomfortable when my teeth aren’t brushed how is this connected? She has gum disease diagnosis what about infection?” And they keep referring me to this one and that one and this one and that one. And I feel like my PCP “I don’t feel comfortable doing her teeth again with her on going stomach problems” it’s like what if her DIAGNOSED gum disease is causing her stomach issues?!?! Or a big part of it???? So the solution to see a board certified dental vet which is only one in my state and 2 hours away!!!!

      *a girl in my PCP’s office wouldn’t schedule with me again for my dog’s teeth even though tufts said when she is stable to have her teeth cleaned. It happened that her appt was around the time she had a “flare up” which is what the ER doc at tufts called it with her IBD diagnosis. My Yorkie has awful breathe, loses teeth, lots of tartar and desperately needs her teeth cleaned!!! I have mental and psychical health diagnosis that prevent me from traveling far or even driving in general! I just feel I’m at the end of my rope with my PCP vet who and tufts I’m so sick of it. I heard that the vet system is similar to human med system in USA anyways. And they just make you more sick and lessen life span. First
      I’m fall of 2020 my PCP vet put Daisy on hills i/d kibble for her digestion. She did the best on that. Until she got picky and we tried introducing baked chicken in her diet again but it made it worse and I will always feel guilty for that. I go to see my PCP he tells me “the hills food is junk food all dog food junk food. Kibble make teeth worse” me “why would you prescribe it then?!” PCP: “because it’s like humans you take meds at a risk because the pros outweigh the risks. Me: “no it isn’t like humans I’m on several meds and I do NOT eat for breakfast lunch snd dinner medications! My meds are NOT my one and only primary sustenance so how does that make sense? How is this effecting Daisy’s lifespan?” PCP: “oh I don’t know” shrugs his shoulders and walks away! So we went to tufts ER, they did ultra sound, blood work, (1200) and said everything looked great. Only her kidney not functioning 100% to their liking but they said it is due to her age. And put her on experiment hills prescription z/d hypo diet. She likes it for. While and ofc got sick of it. She started finding food on the kitchen and figured out: oh if I go here after this human eats I may find something good (I bought a pet gate to start putting them around to prevent her from vacuuming the house because she’s sneaky and does it at night and it’s so hard to put together) . Did I mention my PCP said “kibble is bad for her teeth” I switch to wet food given to me after tufts visit by the ER clinician on rotation at tufts.
      Daisy my Yorkie had a psychical 6 months later. My PCP vet: “she lost a pound because wet food has less nutrients” wtf?!?!?!?!

      Follow the advice in this video. If you know for a fact he is healthy then he will not starve himself and you mustn’t keep giving in and resorting to spoon feeding - something no healthy dog needs.
      Good luck

    Their teeth is a major one, if their teeth hurt they would rather not eat and I have this problem with my dog.

      Yes, although it’s amazing how sore it has to be for them Not to eat sometimes. This is one reason why a check up is so important before a dog is labelled fussy

    Just give your dog's Purina or whatever umami flavor. I give a dog some Chinese takeout and umami flavor is the secret.

    Can anyone give me an advice. My dog when she arrived at first, she ate everything we gave her and she was very healthy but she started to not eat at the age of 4 months. She isn’t like others. She eats but only a little . I told the vet but he told me she was just being fussy. So I gave her wet food and she ate it that day. But the next day she didn’t eat it. I gave her bread, she ate it for 2 days and she stopped eating it the next day. Tried different kibbles. Only ate them the first time I fed them. What should I do . She only eats bones and she is very playful and healthy. She walks for 30 mins everyday and poop for 2 to 3 times a day. Plz give me some ideas on what should I feed.

    My samoyed girl used to eat normally , since i got her i always add some wet canned food to her kibbles. But she gradually losing interest on her usual food. Now one thing for sure she loves plain boiled chicken as topping. She refused to eat other than that.

    And the kicker is that my PCP said to “call tufts get a price for spay, teeth clean, and maybe biopsy. They can do it all at once”. So I call tufts and I find out they haven’t done dental work in YEARS from the internal medicine liaison! Wtf?! I was like this is my final straw I called back my PCP vet and they’re like “oh they don’t always tell us” I said to tufts and PCP office “no. This is something a professional veginafian whose been doing what he does for YEARS SHOULD KNOW AND KEEP UP TO DATE ON! The Liaison at tufts said “yes it is odd your PCP didn’t know” ofc he didn’t want to throw shade and I get that but having to be misled SO MANY TIMES by my PCP to then just never apologize, never try to communicate with me better, is unfair.
    Then the day before Daisy’s teeth cleaning July of 2020 I call saying she was sick not eating diarrhea and they cancelled ofc. I asked to reschedule they said go to tufts first. My appt @ tufts apparently was never booked so I called my PCP back after rescheduling @ tufts and they said “doc (nick name for PCP vet) just doesn’t feel comfortable doing the surgery (JUST her teeth no spay) because of her underlying health problems. I will email you a couple places” I get emailed 1. Regular vet over an hour away
    And the only “board certified in vet dentistry” in my state (Massachusetts) yes I asked my PCP directly and his office MONTHS AGO “is there a toothpaste just for dogs with allergies / stomach or GI tract issues?” “Is there any dental specialists you can refer me to?” I was told “no. Just use the tooth brush. No toothpaste if it’s making her sick” wtf?! So I listened and then called again and (some of this is out of order but all happened in the last year & a half) what I am SO FU*king mad about is how many times my questions were answered only to be contradicted weeks or months later by my PCP vet. As well as the time, energy, and money that could of been saved. Most importantly Daisy’s health and heR SUFFERING FOR LONGER THAN NECESSARY. Now Classes have started and this entire problem with her teeth cold of been taken care of way back in early summer! So it’s like another thing to worry about, and it’s so not okay. Why haven’t I switched vets? I live in a small town and most aren’t taking new patients. Also I am limited (no car) to how far I can travel. I have diagnosed chronic mental and psychical health disorders that limit my ability to go places and my energy is very low. Yes I am eating cleaner I exercise I have begun taking better care of my health more and doing anything I can to help Daisy there are so many factors about my life that make it even more difficult for Daisy & myself. I am losing faith in the vet system and it seems just like usa medical system. Expensive. Only bandages, rarely cures.
