    The worst thing Case did was discontinue the locking Sodbuster. I still have mine I bought in 79; it was the first knife I bought at 12 years old.

      I sell them on eBay all the time as I have over 100 of them some used some in mint condition it’s the only case knives I collect. I’m speaking of the liner locking sodbuster that is

      Yep give me a sodbuster anyday. It would be great if Case brought back the locking sodbuster, the only other knife I’d compare to practicality is the Svord peasant knife. I’d even go as far as saying I’d rather have either of them over classic opinel. 👍

      Great coincidence: I too bought my sodbuster in '79 , the day after high school graduation. Mine is not a locking blade. I still carry it as my 'kitchen duty" knife on every camping trip and daily in my lunch box. I have cleaned many a fish with it and butchered many deer as well. I suck at sharpening so it never really is as good as the factory edge. Nice knife though.

      I use my sodbuster for big game gutting skinning and butchering as well as general chore use. I’ve often wished it just had a lock! I didn’t know that it once did!😳

    I’m tickled by this video because I EDC both. Both have their place, and that’s why I carry them. I work in agriculture and there’s definitely uses for either one- my buck 110 is in a belt sheath, and used for cutting/prying/tooling and more “heavy duty” use where I may have to worry about it closing on my fingers, and my sodbuster sits in my right front pocket and is used as a more general purpose cutter. Bags, sacks, baling wire/twine, packages etc. my buck 110 edge is a bit more harsh since it’s used more as a tool, and my case is reserved for cutting use only. It’s also nice to carry a knife that you can 1, use with no regret to keeping a nice fine edge, and 2, a knife that you can hand someone that is easy to operate and is always sharp. It’s kind of embarrassing if the only pocket knife you have to offer someone is knicked up and dull.

    I have them both and both are great knives. The Case is more of a utility knife used for all kinds of things and the Buck was designed to be a hunting knife. I have an early Sodbuster in carbon from the 70's and it is a stout knife, much more so than the current ones. I like using the Case as it's lighter and easier to deploy but both are great knives.

    Apple's and orange's. I've had both and prefer the 110. I've used a folding hunter for over fifty years And I'm near 70 years old. My best friend has used the sod buster most of his life and is 66yrs old grew up on a farm and he loves it! So I think it's a matter of personal preference.

    It boils down to weight and the Buck is just to damn heavy

  • @lostcat9lives322
    @lostcat9lives322 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I can understand why someone would EDC a Buck 110. Iconic, U.S. made, and over built you can't go wrong with a 110. However it's greatest virtues are also its greatest drawbacks. It's just too heavy/large for common EDC. Sometimes you want a 2lb hammer. Most of the time you don't and packing one around gets old quick. The lighter, slimmer Sodbuster does 95% of what the 110 does but is way easier to live with. The lack of a lock on the Sodbuster however may be a deal breaker for some. Both knives have "little brothers". The Buck 112 is usually described as a smaller 110 but this description shortchanges the 112. Not just smaller and lighter, the "recurve" of the forward/pivot bolster of the 112 makes for way better ergonomics and with the slightly reduced dimensions is much more comfortable to carry. It's truly a different knife from the 110, it does every thing the 110 does and in my humble opinion is just a smarter knife. The little brother of the standard Sodbuster is of course the Jr Sodbuster. The Jr is easier to carry and can be had (dirt cheap) in yellow delrin/1095 blade steel. Perhaps too small if you want a full four finger grip, still it's a sweet traditional blade. Enough (too much?) said.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, the 110 is too heavy for regular EDC, which is why tens of thjousands carry it every day. And don't you feel sorry for the millions who EDC a handgun and extra mags, which can be as much as five pounds heavier than a Buck 110?
      And if you think the 112 can do everything the 110 can do, you're a couch potato woodsman.
      Serious, the dumbest statement on any outdoor forum is that the 110 is too heavy to EDC. This is right up there, and maybe a little about, the Flat Earth movement, and tinfoil hat conspiracies. The 110 is the most used, and the most EDCed folding knife in modern history.
      It's been passed by silly flip knives that no one really use, that really can'y be used in the wild, but that's it.
      If you actually think a 110 is too heavy for regular EDC, you need a membership to a good gym, and a lesson in both history and current usage of knives.

      I don’t even notice my 110 on my belt. Been carrying it so long everyday it’s just apart of my attire at this point. Seems heavy in the hand but on your belt in the sheath it’s not noticeable at all.

    Don't know how I missed this vid before. I think your comparison was well thought out. In my area, in the late 80s a Buck 110 was around $40, a Case Sharktooth was around $70.
    I wanted a Sharktooth soooo bad, but that was a crazy TON of money! The Sodbuster, which the couple Case guys I knew then carried, sure started to look better with its price!
    But the Schrade 125OT was even better at $26 so out the door I went.
    Years later I collected some of all of the above. Honestly, the Sharktooth was a disappointment in actual use. Heavier than the 110, and not as comfortable as people say. Blade so so.
    The 110 blew me away, and is now my favorite belt knife. The Sodbuster is about as large a real pocketable knife you can carry comfortably. But my Opinel beat it at that game.
    Good vid! brought back memories!

    Very good points. But being a owner of many knives I have to say that the case sod buster is probably the sharpest knives I ever owned. Extremely thin behind the cutting edge combined with a wide blade it it a slicing machine.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does it compare to Opinel, I have yet to see another factory made knife with a better geometry for slicing than an Opinel.

  • @mikecole1095
    @mikecole1095 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video! So now let’s fast foward to 2023 and take another quick comparison. Both knives are American made which is a plus in my opinion however the sheath that comes with the buck is made in Mexico, the blade on the buck was very loose, while the sod buster has changed very little in accordance to your test. A knife in its simplest definition is a cutting tool, if it cuts then it does what it was made to do. Anything else is just personal preference 👍🏻

  • @MrRugercat45
    @MrRugercat45 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Tru-Sharp IS 420 stainless steel, if it was 440C it would most likely beat the Buck 110 for edge holding. Now Buck used 440C originally for it’s stainless steel, but went to different steels quite a few years ago. Their 420HC with the Bos heat treat beats many other steels out there, it’s just a matter of good heat treatment.

    Have both like them both. Can't decide. Go with my 110 lite nowadays for less weight... locks and has point for piercing. Sodbuster... Just right as rain all purpose knife. I would say 110 more for camping and hunting, and sodbuster more for chores farm landscaping barn sort of tasks. But both can do either and are classics though.

  • @cocabandi3196
    @cocabandi3196 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very good comparison of two American classics. I would mention, however, that each knife is made for a particular use which doesnt make a real, unbiased comparison fair. I would say, if you're a hunter, or feel the need to carry something tactical, for whatever reason, go for the Buck. If you're a farmer, do lots of gardening, or want an EDC that performs daily tasks adequately, and looks less threatening, go with the Case.

    The year is1988, just walked out of the knife store located in the mall. Just bought the SodBuster for $22 of hard-earned busboy tip money. Took it out of the box, opened it up and dropped it on the pavement. The back spring snapped in half. Climbed on my bike and peddled home mad as hell. Still, have that broken knife.

    Not a bad review. I've carried Case Sodbuster Jrs for over 20 years everyday and they are my go to pocket knife. I love the simplicity, the reputation, the look and the functionality of them. While watching I did find myself selfishly giving points to the Case, however, when I think about it, I do believe you made some good points. Love the concept of the video but this was like comparing a snowblower to a snow plow. Both kind of do the same thing but there applications are much different. If I am hunting I would carry the 110. If I we're doing yard work I would carry the sodbuster. The blade types classify the knives more than anything. The 110 with a clip point and swedge is more specialized for it's task s. Sod busters don't need a swedge to "cut sod".

  • @mikecole1095

  • @SoldierDrew

    Never liked a folder for a hunting, skinning, knife because cleaning hair, blood and organic material out of the handle well, grooves and folding mechanism is a hassle that a fixed blade remedies.
    Since folders are utility knives for me the Sod Buster is a better utility folder than the Buck 110.

  • @jamesaritchie1
    @jamesaritchie1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This isn't even a contest. The cheapest 110 made is better in every sense of the word than a Sodbuster, and I love the Case Sodbuster. You're comparing apples and oranges. These knives aren't in the same class, and the Sodbuster is lousy as a replacement for a good fixed blade knife, which is what the 110 is designed to be.

  • @1969jmac
    @1969jmac 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just received my sodbuster junior and was thoroughly disappointed. Case's quality has deteriorated tremendously. The sodbuster JR. was scratched / marred on the back spring and the rivets protrude they aren't flush. The entire length of the back spring is higher than the handle scales. The back is not flush, the build is poor, the blade has a grinding feel when opening as if there was sand in it. The entire thing is garbage. This one is on par with a flea market $5 grab bag knife
