If Bowser's Fury really is a blueprint for the next mainline 3D Mario, then I'm excited because this was so much fun. I got 100 Cat Shines on all 4 save files and I had a blast each time.
What I love about Bowser's Fury is that we can finally use the power ups from the 2D games without any restriction. They are an extension of Mario's abilities instead of being situational.
I see your Great Sea comparison and I say, dream bigger. Imagine a GALAXY GAME like this where you travel through space in your spaceship to each level. Like you go from Gusty Garden galaxy to Battlerock Galaxy to Good Egg Galaxy without ever exiting out to a menu.
I wouldn’t say it’s the “best” 3D Mario, as it feels like a proof of concept of what a future 3D Mario *could* be instead of a full-fledged game, and so in that vein I’d say Odyssey is still triumphant. That being said, it’s still a great and wonderful time, and makes me entirely look forward to what the 3D Mario team has cooking next.
I think you identified one of the largest challenges that gaming is currently coming to terms with: building a functional open world off the structure of linear set-piece level design.
The fact that you can play with Peach and Rosalina, as well as 4 local players and a festive family atmosphere like Christmas, made this game my favorite Mario game since the Wii U. 🥰
Looking at Bowser's Fury and Wonder, it really does make me think how they'll further experiment with dynamically changing levels with the power of the switch 2 for the next 3D Mario
Bowser's Fury is what I thought 3D Land was going to be like when it was first announced. The first images looked like they made a 3D Mario game with 2D Mario elements. But when 3D Land came out it was a 2D styled Mario game but in 3D & with 3D elements. For me this is a full circle moment lol.
Okay so this is interesting, one of my small but noticeable criticisms of Bowser’s Fury was that you have to go outside of the area and come right back in to get a new shine. It was a small thing but it really started to annoy me. But, as you say, it never bothered you because you would get a shine then go to a completely different area to get a shine. And I just think it’s really interesting how that ends up being a fundamental difference in how the game feels. Like, for me, if I’m put into a level with a finite set of objectives, I get everything in that level to the best of my ability. That’s kind of why Bob-omb Battlefield has always slightly annoyed me, because it’s the first level in the game but it’s designed in a way where you’re supposed to not be able to do everything (out of defiance I get the cap stars without the cap). But at the same time, if you’re playing a game with a completely different mindset, I can see that not even crossing someone’s mind as an issue. I think that’s why Odyssey worked best for me, in having a finite set of moons for each world but not telling the player until after they beat the game, that feels a lot more freeform, even if you technically have to go to a map to see the stages. Idk, I just think that’s interesting. Also it’s Meowser, get it right.
I think Odyssey beats it pretty easily (and not just because it’s longer), but it would be absolute foolishness to deny how good Bowser’s Fury is even though it didn’t even need to exist to get 3D World selling on Switch. Also, 1:48 this does mean that it got to join the very exclusive “Added a new game in the Switch remaster” club with Xenoblade Definitive Edition. Xenoblade and Bowser’s Fury. Can’t have one without the other, like peas in a pod they are
3D World(, 3D Land, Captain Toad) and Odyssey all use the same engine for those who didn't know, so something like this in 3D Worlds version of it isn't too out of place
I remember before playing the game I had heard about the complaints of fury bowser so when I played the game I was playing it normally until I was at the last few shines needed to get to 50 and fury bowser stopped disappearing after collecting a cat shine. I decided to go around the map and collect all the bowser block shines as I wouldn’t have to worry about bowser disappearing and got any other shines on the map. It was so fun to traverse the world with an extended Fury Bowser to collect as many shines as I could. Anyway, I loved this game and it was such a blast to play and complete. Great video.
I honestly enjoyed Bowser's Fury, but a game I really enjoyed was the main super Mario 3D world: I got it for my 29th birthday and play that all night long with my closest friends. That was a good time 🤗😊
I wanted Bowser's Fury to be released independently, but I eventually caved and bought the game realizing the base 3D World had all those updates. And looking back, they are great as a package.
Bowser's Fury is such a weird game. A fun one no doubt, but definitely a weird one. It doesn't have enough content to feel like a full-fledged game, but it also feels a little too ambitious and different from 3D World to consider it as merely a companion piece to that game. Calling it a Frankenstein's monster is pretty accurate. Due to its status as an experimental mini-adventure, I can't consider it one of my favorite Mario platformers, but it is a great addition to package with the 3D World port and a successful possible proof-of-concept for 3D Mario's future. I think my ideal 3D Mario game right now would be a game with the controls and lived-in world of Odyssey with a world structure that takes cues from Bowser's Fury. If they bring back power-ups for the sandbox formula, I think they should keep Mario's health meter from the other 3D Mario's rather than tying his health to the power-ups (though I'd still be okay with losing a power-up upon getting hit), as the large amount of power-ups you can carry to instantly restore yourself makes it really hard to die for almost the entire game. I'm totally fine with Mario games being easy to beat, but I do expect them to have some challenging optional/post-game content to chew on, and Bowser's Fury was lacking in that regard for me. Actually, the post-game exclusive shines in general were uninteresting to me from what I remember, which is why I've only 100%ed Bowser's Fury once despite how short it is.
it was a fine little experiment, but it was such a one-and-done experience for me. I can't say that it's the best when Odyssey is on Switch as well as Galaxy through 3D All Stars
I must be the only one who really loved Fury Bowser and never at all got annoyed when he showed up, even after 100%ing the game and replaying it. It was always cool to see how he affected the different areas.
While the Galaxy games are 3D Mario's peak, Bowser's Fury isn't too far behind. The mixture of linear and sandbox Mario was a delight, and if they expand on this for the next 3D Mario we could be in for something special. It being packaged with 3D World makes it the best Mario Switch experience imho (as someone who loves 3D World)
I don’t know… Bowser’s Fury is good certainly, but for me Odyssey is still better by a long shot and it is not just because of length. I personally prefer the more moment to moment gameplay Odyssey has, the controls are much more fun to me, I prefer Odysseys health metre to the power ups, and overall Odysseys world and levels had a ton more character and charm to them… at least in my opinion. If you do enjoy Fury more, good for you though!
Unpopular opinion I guess(?) as I see everyone praise this often, including this video, but I'm not the biggest fan of Bowser's Fury's "open level" structure. Putting all the levels on one giant map made them all blend into each other for me and didn't make my experience feel that memorable. I still enjoyed Bowser's Fury, one of my favorites of 2021, but I don't want the next 3D Mario game to put everything on a single map, though it might regardless of what I want.
I'm really looking forward to the next 3D Mario I loved Odyssey and Bowser's Fury was great so I can't wait to see how they've improved and tried something new.
11:51 thank you for that, I'm sold! :D I haven't played this one yet, almost did twice but bought luigi's mansion 3 instead because of a sale... but next time? I'm in! I LOVE Odyssey, I'm still returning many times to it when I get an itch for 3d mario or just to goof around collecting more moons. It's like a gorgeous playground that never ends.
What Bowser's Fury needed was a means to control the time and therefore the moments when Fury Bowser would awake (I mean there kinda is with the Amiibo, but it sucks to have that feature locked behind a paywall essentially), and what I'm saying by that is that the next 3D Mario should incorporate time mechanics akin to the 3 day system of Majora's Mask Just imagine the level design and objectives changing being a part that can be actively controlled through a mechanic instead of just awkwardly waiting / leaving and reentering the level/area itself. Not only would that solve two of my major gripes with Bowser's Fury (Having to wait for/through Fury Bowser phases & constantly force-leaving an area just to get new missions appear), it would also open up so many new and creative design ideas that force you to think in more than just three dimensions. Certainly that's not a new concept at all. Zelda has done that plenty of times now and even Mario 64 did dabble in similar ideas back in the day with tick tock clock or tiny huge island, though way less seamless.
Bowser’s Fury and Mario Galaxy 1 are my favorite 3D games in the whole series just because they are this happy marriage of linear and sandbox Mario. One game goes for a cinematic, heartwarming and beautiful galactic style, featuring lovable new mainstay characters, the most innovative worlds we’ve ever seen in the series to date, along with the most story content in a Mario Platformer. The other, uses 3D World’s ideas as a base, crafts and charming, lighthearted archipelago around them, and perfects the flawed gameplay loop of Mario Odyssey, making for a great template of what’s to come for Mario! Easily the best games on their respective consoles.
Honestly speaking, why _wouldn't_ you consider New Super Luigi U its own game? Sure it's got more in common with a rom-hack, but that alone gives it its own identity in a weird way.
I skipped the Wii U and I am so happy I got to play this on Switch! Amazing game. I loved Odyssey as well. So a hybrid between Bowsers Fury and Odyssey would be a match made in heaven.
@@azenar1894 If you compare the first 3 Kingdoms to Bowser's Fury it becomes abundantly clear why Bowser's is more refined. Also most captures take away abilities from Mario but the power-ups in Bowser's Fury adds to his moves allowing for more controlled level design.
Despite being based in 3D World's foundation and having an interconnected open world, I truly think Bowser's Fury recaptures the spirit of Super Mario 64. The level of freedom, the options you have on your disposal, that sense of wonder. The same way that I enjoy using Mario's maneuvers to get Power Stars in any order in Super Mario 64, I get the same feeling using Mario's power-ups to get Cat Shines throughout the world.
I had a blast playing this. The 3D Land/ World games were some of my favorites of the entire franchise and I’ve been here since Mario Bros on the Atari 2600 😂 They felt more like a natural progression of the 2D games, where as the NSMB games felt bland and generic to me (though NSMB2 is a guilty pleasure) Bowsers Fury merged the two play styles in an innovative and creative way.
Koizumi contacted me ( because you know my uncle works at Nintendo) and he said if you complete Sonic 06 using the DK bongos 100% he will make a Bowsers Fury style Mario game. I said "Please Koizumi be reasonable " but he just laughed like Bowser.
I don't really see this one making the "open" level design too well. Being forced to go from one island to another just so it resets with a new collectible... it more tedious than entering a painting again. Or better said, whatever the Sunshine things are, which alter the stages.
I think if it was full it would be better than Odyssey. I just like the formula more, and the combination with 3D World is cool since 3DW is my #1 3D Mario.
I've always loved Bowser's Fury, it's just super fun and replayable with an amazing soundtrack and really cool boss fights with Bowser. I still like Odyssey more but this is almost as good
@@bretginn1419 I’d argue they’re still better than odyssey. Mario odyssey has too much wasted potential and filler for me to put it at the top of my Switch GOATs list. I felt luigi’s mansion 3 was better by virtue of the fact that it did everything it set out to do to near perfection (besides the backtracking, but we don’t talk about that) and I thought tears was a more ambitious game that was more impressive on a technical and gameplay level. I am no critic though so take what I say with a grain of salt lol
Nintendo should make a Super Mario 3D Land 2 with the addition of a open world that is the combination between Super Mario Bowser's fury and The legend of Zelda Tears of the kingdom, with the power up system, 2 player split screen between Mario and purple toad, and 3000 stars to collect
I hope hub worlds or world select screens are a thing of the past and the next 3D Mario's world is seamlessly connected like this one. And yeah, ironically, the worst thing about Bowser's Fury are the Bowser parts.
>Bowser’s Fury hates downtime!! >Has a whole section talking about examples of downtime caused by Fury Bowser I love Bowser’s Fury but I cannot call it the best 3D Mario on Switch and that’s one of the biggest reasons why
The way this game was released reminds me of Four Sword, being a bonus mini game alongside a port of a classic game released years ago. Will this get it's own standalone title like Four Sword did?
I enjoyed this concept more than what they did with Odyssey. If they'd release a full length game which has that instant dynamic world like Bowser's Fury, it'd be the best 3D Mario to date imo
I wouldn't exactly called Bowser's Fury an full and perfected 3D Mario game cause this feels like an prototype or an minigame rather than an full game. Regardless, I like where this is going. But I do have my complaints. The first one is that the missions are very repetitive. Whether your getting all the Blue Coins, chasing Shadow Luigi, beating the same old bosses we thought before or whatever. They need to make the missions alot more variety than just rense & repeat stuff. It's the same issue I have with other open sandbox/collecthon 3D Mario games like 64, Sunshine & especially Odyssey. I'm not an fan of the Fury Bowser gimmick. He just shows up whenever he feels like and u have to make him destroy an block that only him can break to get an shine and stuff. The enemies are so underwhelming. They took the enemies from 3D World and added there cat ears where they have no new abilities and do exactly the same attack pattern as in the ones in 3D World. That's lazy. And lastly, the game is super short. It's why I considered it an minigame cause it's just that. If it were an full length game, it would've been an new mainline Mario title. Despite all this, I liked the concept that this is going and if the next fully 3D Mario game does something like Bowser's Fury does but longer & better, than I'll be down with that. It's an nice distraction. But it's far from the best 3D Mario game. That honor goes to Galaxy 1 & 2 and I don't care what anyone says, but Super Mario 3D World as well.
I don't see the next 3D Mario being a launch title for the next system. Metroid Prime 4 and a glorified Tech demo game will probably be its launch titles.
I can’t imagine they’d put their faith in prime 4. Metroid is far too niche to sell an entire system regardless of the legacy of the games. Plus, pretty much every Nintendo console has launched with a new Mario game or a Zelda game to boot. The only exceptions to my knowledge are the virtual boy, the GameCube and the Gameboy Advance. The first two were flops until Nintendo rushed out sunshine to save the GameCube. I’d imagine they’d put out a new 3D Mario for the switch’s successor in order to make sure that it sells
@@lol-ih1tl The Wii and Switch had Zelda titles to carry their launch. The 3DS had an absolute disaster of a launch until it got a price cut and 3D land released to save it. Consoles that release without a Zelda or Mario generally don’t do well until one is released.
If Bowser's Fury really is a blueprint for the next mainline 3D Mario, then I'm excited because this was so much fun. I got 100 Cat Shines on all 4 save files and I had a blast each time.

Thank you for remembering Super Mario Galaxy 2 when Nintendo seems to refuse to acknowledge its existence.
1:51 New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe = New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U
I love Captain Toad.
I don't really see this one making the "open" level design too well. Being forced to go from one island to another just so it resets with a new collectible... it more tedious than entering a painting again. Or better said, whatever the Sunshine things are, which alter the stages.
You can’t tell me that Pounce Bounce Isle’s music doesn’t sound like something straight out of Color Splash
Out of all the TH-camrs I follow, Jon is the only one who puts on a tie.

I still like Odyssey more but this is almost as good
Idk 3d world is an A tier game with a small B game as a bonus, I still consider one S tier better that being Odessey.
Oddyssey is the best Switch game period lol
🤡🤡🤡🤡
Nah. Tears clears. Hell, I’d argue Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a better game
@@avocadeous I'd argue those are some of the weakest games on the Switch.
Best Switch game is clearly Okami HD and Xenoblade 1 Definitive Edition.
I really like the structure of Bowser's Fury, if this is the next step for 3D Mario then i would be verry excited to see that in the next game
I wonder if the one for "Switch 2" will actually be similar to this. I guess we will see next year and so far, we can wait for Wonder
If they ever go the open world route for Mario they have to bring back the wing cap from Super Mario 64.
@@jaretco6423 haha true, the wing cap red coin challenge level was a pain.
It took me almost 4 hours to finish it the first time and almost 7 to 100% it. I swear everyone seems to be a speedrunner to me
I hope hub worlds or world select screens are a thing of the past and the next 3D Mario's world is seamlessly connected like this one. And yeah, ironically, the worst thing about Bowser's Fury are the Bowser parts.
next mario they shd bring back the cape feather and there shd b stuff Under the water including whole other levels
If it was more varied and “full” and didn’t have the stupid run button then maybe but no it’s not even close to odyssey or even base game 3D world
Bowser's Fury isn't even the best game on the cartridge
Downtime-Slayer Bowser 5:20
>Bowser’s Fury hates downtime!!
>Has a whole section talking about examples of downtime caused by Fury Bowser
I love Bowser’s Fury but I cannot call it the best 3D Mario on Switch and that’s one of the biggest reasons why
Nah quit sleeping on odyssey
What's this guy's name? Always love his insights

Preferred the game play of odyssey but the structure of bowsers fury
It’s a fun game to play!
Bowser's Fury was quite good, but I think the best 3D Mario game on the Switch is still Galaxy. I didn't say "new", just "best".
@@avocadeous Wii, 3DS and Switch didn't have any Mario launch titles.
@@lol-ih1tl The Wii and Switch had Zelda titles to carry their launch. The 3DS had an absolute disaster of a launch until it got a price cut and 3D land released to save it. Consoles that release without a Zelda or Mario generally don’t do well until one is released.
I agree with you John, love the game and great video.
No, Odyssey is the best but Fury is number 2. It's one of the best Mario games ever
UNSPEAKABLE stuff 👺
