When lead singer Neil Finn, who also wrote this song, replaced Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac in 2018, they always found a place in their setlist to let him sing this song.
Saw Neil a few yrs back walk out on stage as a surprise guest in the middle of a Stevie Nicks concert in New Orleans, and belt this out beautifully. Always loved how perfectly engineered the studio recording was. Top Shelf. 👈
@@jxchamb Long time since I saw it, but it could be. I know that things were looking quite hopeless to those two at the time. I have the DVD. I may have to watch it again.
My favorite 80’s song. My #1. I’m so glad you enjoyed that organ sound too. The lead singer Neil Finn toured with Fleetwood Mac a few years ago (replacing Lindsey Buckingham) This definitely should have been a #1 hit in the US. So much great music and competition in the 80’s. Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s duet I Knew You Were Waiting For Me kept it from the #1 spot.
Imadrummin - This takes me back to the golden MTV years. If I didn't know better, when I close my eyes I swear I'm listening to the original vid. Finn is killing the vocal! always liked this song but after seeing them performing it live, I like them - and Neil Finn - that much more. In February of '19 I took my girl to see Fleetwood Mac. They fired Lindsey Buckingham because he didn't want to go on tour. So, they signed Neil Finn to fill the void. I missed Buckingham, but Finn filled in nicely. Great song and reaction -- thanks, fellas!
Neil Finn is such a great singer. I was a huge fan of his when he was in Split Enz in the 70s, so I immediately loved Crowded House. You have to hand it to Paul Young...he does good covers. He also made a hit of Every Time You Go Awat, a Hall and Oates song.
I bought their album when I was about 19yrs old and on the vinyl was sort of like coloured lazerring.. I treasured that special record till my home was broken into.😢.This is a memory.
Kudos to them for doing live vocals and his voice is just as good live. The instruments aren't live, but then again, on TV performances, they rarely are.
@@kevindohn6776 Yep. Guitars that play themselves during the Keyboards solo and Keyboards that play themselves during the rest of the song. At least they convinced the TV company to let themselves sing live though.
Crowded House and Talk Talk are my two favourite bands from the 80's. Talk Talk is definitely worth a listen. Mark Hollis had one of the best voices of his generation.
HI Harri ... There were three on stage (singer/guitarist, bass player and drummer). I have a feeling that at this time, 1 of the members was sick or had left the band, but they still had obligations to fulfill. I also think that, though the vocals were done live (you can tell because he didn't sing it the same), at least SOME of the music was from a recording. I say this because, when that organ came in, he pretended to play it, but ONLY in the solo, and while doing that, he stopped playing guitar, but I'm pretty sure it can still be heard. Then, later in the song, the organ was playing WHILE he was playing guitar, so I think at least that part was pre-recorded.
This song was used to great effect in the last season of the show, "The Americans", which took place in the '80s making this song period-correct. It was used in a montage clip of spies prepping for their last mission and the music and words were well matched by the action of the scene. When I saw that, it reminded me that I had forgotten about this group, so I bought the album this song was on.
I love this song!! In 2001, the Australasian Performing Right Assoc. ranked “Don’t Dream Its Over” second on its list of the Top 100 New Zealand songs of all time! It was nominated for Best Group Video & Best Direction at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, & earned the group a BestNew Artist award.
From the 1986 debut album, "Crowded House", an absolutely beautiful song. Neil Finn's vocals saturated with palpable emotion and sincerity, with an expansive melodic chorus encouraging hope . The organ so enchanting and lovely leading their biggest international hit, making Number 1 in Canada, Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100's and Number 27 in the UK. The melodic lines come in two's and the second half of the song repeats the first. Absolutely beautiful. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦
Raised without TV for the first 8 years, my parents always had records or radios on. So Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, all the great bands, Elvis, then Beatles and all the great Rock and Roll, Country etc. So I still fall back on them. Even went to a Boyz to Men concert a few years ago, 2nd row, probably the oldest lady in there. Lol 🤣🤣 Just love the requests I've forgotten about on Harri's channel. What about you?
I've seen CH probably 15+ times. I've had great seats, and horrible seats. Getting down close to the stage is great because the Crowdies all start to sing, there's tons of life CH videos on TH-cam. Some are pretty recent, I was at a show in Chicago earlier this year. It was amazing. Seeing a live performance where the crowd shows up is pretty special.
One of those situations where I'd argue you get a better performance and a better feeling for the song from the official video over the live performance. Yo, it happens sometimes!
I could be wrong, but this sounds like lovers who have others trying to tear them apart. Maybe because I'm familiar with the tactics. Beautiful poetry set to stunning music. Thanks, Harri and Imadrummin.
Hari when will you revisit The Marshall Tucker Band? You enjoy them so much. I would like to suggest In my own way and Take the highway. Two beautiful songs that will be diamonds to your ears.
Neil Finn knows how to make brillant songs !!! First in Split Enz with his brother Tim and then in crowded house. This Kiwi from New Zealand made huge music !!! Awesome every time !!!
Kind of applicable to the events of today. "Don't let them win." A good one to check out is "Silent Running" live by Mike & The Mechanics. Nothing like Paul Carrack's soulful voice.
actually, harri, neil's lead vocal is the only thing live. it even sounds a bit like they lightly mixed in the original vocal to back the live vocal in spots. and yes, drummer and third member lol, paul hester is shown playing 😁 this is crowded house and neil finn's masterpiece. he and they have and will never create a more perfect song ❤ p.s. omg i never knew paul young did a cover of this lol and i love paul! thanks for the info, harri 😊
I so look forward to your reactions, Harri! Please…PLEASE react to Geoff Castellucci’s (acapella) version of ‘Til Then. I promise…you’ll be blown away! Thank you so much and God Bless!
Out of the ashes of Split Enz sprung Crowded House. The Enz last album actually sounds more like a House demo. I will always be a bigger fan of Split Enz, but Crowded House also did some worthwhile stuff; their second album (not commercially successful) is even better for my money. Thanks for the upload.
It still blows my mind that Joe Satriani got a backing vocal credit on this album, but didn’t play guitar (Tim Pierce did the 2nd guitar session work on this album).
From the land down under. Actually I like this original song, version by Crowded House a bit more than the cover version by Paul Young, which is surely great too.
Great song! However, it isn't being played totally live. Neil Finn's vocals are live but the instrumentation isn't as you can see when the organ part is being played and Neil is still playing the guitar. There were three on stage - the drummer was in the background.
Some parts at least are not live - you can hear some guitar fills while Neil is playing rhythm and the guitar continues to play when the organ comes in.

It seemed to create such a sad, foreboding atmosphere in that scene, as I remember.

Better Be Home Soon and Something So Strong are a couple more Crowded House standards. Better Be Home Soon is my favorite from them.
