  • Part two of Peter Knego's series of updates from the recently reopened QUEEN MARY in Long Beach where restoration work continues on the magnificent 1936-built liner. This time, we get a closer look at the model gallery on Prom Deck, the shops lining the Main Hall, the spectacular Queens Salon (former Cabin/First Class Lounge), the Coffee Shop, The Regent Room, the glorious Royal Salon (former Cabin/First Class Smoking Room), the "History of Transportation" glass panels, the Britannia Salon (former Tourist/Cabin Class Lounge), the Verandah Grill, the Cunard Story exhibit, the engine room, and much more. So much progress has been made in a relatively short time and the future is looking bright for this one-of-a-kind historic treasure.
    OOPS! It is Bainbridge Copnall, not Copinal, as I stated about the sculptor. My apologies...
    Music licensed from Artlist includes: "Dynasty" by Adrian Berengeur; "Turkish March" by Bishara Hironi; "Away" by Birraj; "A Carousing Consort" by La Rosette; "A Man Aman" by Ofer Koren; "Etude de Virtuosite OP72 No. 6" by Raphael Angelini; "Allegro Assai" by Raviv Leibzeia; "Periwig" by Simon Berggren; "Cielo Suite #1 B Major" by Marcello Nami" and "Carmen Prelude" by Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. #queenmaryship #cunardline #cunard #oldships #oceanliner

    I have just been assisting an Australian friend of mine who is a stranger to the internet to follow his Fathers Battalions transport from Sydney to Trincomalee in April 1941,this was done on Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth sailing together. His father did not travel until September 1941 as a reinforcement. This was done again by Queens together from Fremantle to Suez. This is something some times missed in her more famous North Atlantic voyages.

    So happy to see all the restoration work on her (will finally get to see her again after the COVID hiatus next month), but there is still so much that needs to be done. Hopefully the long list of repairs gets worked through quickly so that room restorations (such as the Long Gallery) can be contemplated

    Great update, Peter! When we last toured the ship, our guide confirmed that the Queen’s Salon was utilized in “Out to Sea,” but the lounge in the movie looks quite different besides the overall shape. Did they just heavily set decorate the venue to have it double for Westerdam?

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much, Jason! Hmmm. I haven't seen that film since it first came out. I'll have to go back and review since that memory has faded but I didn't recall that they filmed on the MARY as well as the prior WESTERDAM. Of course there was nothing on WESTERDAM that remotely resembled the MARY's interiors.

    • @PopularCruising
      @PopularCruising 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, they definitely filmed onboard in the observation lounge as the casino and elsewhere, but it’s harder to screen match the salon to the cinematic “Westerdam” lounge.

      That observation bar has certainly generated a lot of revenue for QM as a backdrop in so many films and TV shows.@@PopularCruising

    Wow!!! Thank you for the tour and the great details about the art work. I cant wait to visit again, as it seems there are quite a few changes from 2016. Im still reeling from the knowledge that the Verandah Grill was a Hot dog Stand!!! What on earth were they thinking. Even as a lover and student of these old ocean greyhounds, Im still trying to comprehend how much was going on on these ships when in service.. Everything in triplicate, everyone being catered to.. it really is amazing and overwhelming ... Wonderful job sir!!!

    It is great to see the restoration work. I've been on the Queen Mary twice, the last time being in 2003. Thankfully, the ship still looked good in those years. The bridge wings looked perfectly o.k if I remember correctly! In 2003 the ship was being used as a floating hotel & visitors to the ship were not supposed to venture into the hotel cabin areas but this was not enforced. So I had a good look around! My best memory of the ship was standing on the starboard side & imagining the ship was just coming into the harbor after a voyage.

    Last night my wife treated me to a night on the ship for my birthday and we were unpleasantly supersized that our deluxe harbor view state room looked nothing like the pictures on their website. It looked more like the standard room with wallpaper and not wooden panel walls. My birthday diner at Chelsea Chowder House was not worth the $130. I had the clam chowder which I give a 2 out of 5, a half dozen roasted oysters that were not good at all and a wedge salad that was good. My wife has the blackened salmon and mash potatoes that were good as well. The waiter was very nice but forgot things even that it was a birthday diner that was noted on the reservation...that OK we still tipped him well. This morning that meet with having to cancel the 90+ per person brunch due to not being able to take a shower due to no hot nor warm water, just very cold. We usually don't complain, we just don't return, but I want others to know what we experienced. My wife politely brought this to the front desk's attention, and they said that we need to contact Expedia and that the hotel ship will honor a partial refund. We see what happens.

I'm just blown away, seeing the marvelous etched glass and more wood paneling. Very, very grand to see all of this, plus the room that inspired Irwin Allen to have his set team create the dining room for The Poseidon Adventure.

    #1 There is no dark side of the moon, #2 Who has underwritten the restoration of the ship, #3 Does the restoration include the hull which was reported as severely wasted by the seawater?
    Glad to see the old girl being loved and nourished again.

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, I'm not going to argue astronomy -- I failed that course with flying colors at UCLA but I'm sure you get what I was referring to in that comment. :) It was certainly a milestone album and term from my early teenhood that fellow lay people understand. Would "the side not illuminated by the sun" suffice? As for who is underwriting the restoration, again, not my point in making the video but I believe the funding at this point is coming from either or both the City of Long Beach or the Port of Long Beach. As for her hull, my sources close to the ship assure me that recent hull tests have not indicated any severe underwater corrosion. There have been issues with the hull beneath the promenade, which go back to her construction when work was halted during those crucial early years. The removal of the boats was the first major step in repairs to that part of the ship. I don't know what else has been done in addition to that but again, that isn't the focus of this particular video. Perhaps I will be granted an interview at some point with someone who can answer that question in specific details. Right now, my focus is on all the positive things that are happening to bring the beautiful old lady back to life.

    Another wonderful QM tour there Peter, with significant detail and history behind those exquisite spaces and works of art. Thank you indeed! As much as I do not buy into the "ghosts and goblins" aspect of the Queen, do I per chance spot an interesting orb at 9.16 whilst viewing that gorgeous ceiling mounted light fixture? Thank you again for your diligence and wonderful camera work. Cheers from Australia, Mark :)

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Mark, yes, I noticed that while editing. If it is a bit of ectoplasm, all the better to get the ship some more attention. I'm for whatever it takes to keep her around for as long as possible and the ghost angle has been one of her biggest draws. :) Thanks for your nice comment and for taking the time to post.

    • @gridley
      @gridley 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed that. BTW, YT vlogger Alex the Historian in his "Repair Update" of the QM for September noticed an orb near the area where the ship's former synagogue once existed. His channel also has vids about paranormal experiences he has had through the yrs, in spite of his being a skeptic (as I once was) & favoring logic over fantasy. Then too, scientists are increasingly realizing that truth may be stranger than fiction. Example: the James Webb Telescope detecting distant galaxies that seem larger than the Big Bang Theory would allow. But scientists are debating the pros & cons of that.

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It actually looked like a bit of dust but I'm open. There must be a reason why so many people have reported paranormal experiences on board. I've had "feelings" but have not seen anything outright, although I think I'd welcome the experience. I do think certain ships have a "spirit" and even the Hindis agree, which is why they cut off the bow in a ceremony at Alang before they begin the scrapping process to release the spirit. :)

    Yes replace her boilers her engine room her and her electrical steam powered generators that lit up the ship at night.
    There’s no use making her compartments empty people need tourism as to what made this ship’s heart beat.
    Long Beach should never removed all of the Mary’s machinery.
    Well what done is done now let’s hope it’s replaced.

    I'm confused about your statement about the funnel colors and paint. Are you suggesting that the funnels will be repainted the correct color, or?

      No, I think that ship has sailed for now (returning the funnels to orange) but I am told the third funnel will be painted soon to match the other two.

      Sure my dear big brother. She is one of most iconic ocean liner ever. I am happy to see her saved as museum ship. If we can save the historical / nostalgic / iconic ones that would be really good job and enough action. Other cargo ships can be recycled properly :)@@midshipcinema

    Used to bisitcher regularly when I made my trips to LA. What a beautiful ship.
    As a NY Harbor Captain I had the privilege of seen the Queen Maryll close aboard and the privilege of negotiating navigation with her bridge crew. Great experiences
