      I took a CCW class last week and I was given this gun being a lefty, I was sold once I mastered it the mag release is off-putting being on the trigger guard but once I got used to it I learned to hit it with my right thumb as I went to grab for a new mag since my instructor was programming us to just drop the mag if we are shooting and went dry.

  • @georgemouer4565
    @georgemouer4565 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Others mentioned it but the paddle mag release is NOT intended to be used with the thumb ! Use the strong hand trigger or middle finger and you will find it is actually a much better system than a button release. • @fettmaneiii4439
    @fettmaneiii4439 2 ปีที่แล้ว +124

    HK's are such great shooters! I really love the paddle mag release, because when you are carrying it in a softer holster and pushing up against objects, there is way less chance to hit the mag release. I think your average shooter that doesnt carry very often overlooks this big detail! knowing that when you draw, your mag is still going to be 100% seated is a big plus.

    • @fettmaneiii4439

      I really like being able to hit the catch with my trigger finger. My thumbs are kinda stubby and I will usually have to break my grip to hit a thumb release.

      Solution: don't carry in some soft holster that barely even serves as a trigger cover. I've carried for years and have never once hit a mag release during any drills. This is a nonissue with any decent holster. For small pocket carry guns, ok I get it. I only pocket carry with a revolver though, so again, nonissue. Not aware of any pocket carry sized semi autos with a paddle release.

    1:51 HK makes the VP9 B which has a regular push button style mag release. It’s really a 21st century glock. To me it’s a better pistol in every way and I’m shocked more police departments haven’t switched over. In 4-5,000 rounds not a single misfire of any kind.

    • @RoninSkye24
      @RoninSkye24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's purely a cost issue. If HK was competitive with contract prices they'd likely be used far more often by American police agencies. My department allows us to use personal weapons and I use my VP9 for duty carry.

      @@RoninSkye24 Sad but true comment. Police department adoption of duty sidearms should never be dictated by cost - that's just not the place to cut budget corners. Even the smallest police department should equip it's officers with the best pistols available. In one respect I'm glad you can carry the VP9, but at the same time, in a SHTF situation, you lose the ability to throw a full a fully charged magazine to a fellow officer for a fast reloading in a worst case/sustained gunfight scenario if officers are carrying multiple makes of service sidearms. Stay safe officer.

I'm an outlier, because I keep my primary rifle in the rack beside me and another rifle in my gun bag in the trunk. I'm basically a mobile armory because there's another pistol and shotgun in that bag as well as ammo for all of them.

    It's great to see all the love for the VP9 in the comment section. On many VP9 vs other popular pistols, I see so many people dismissing the VP9 for being more "snappy" and having a higher bore axis than something like a Glock. The trigger is also excellent and the ergonomics are insane too.

      At first I thought my VP9 was snappy but as it's broken in, it feels like any ~4 inch 9mm. I don't shoot it that often so I can't say I've really gotten used to it. I agree at first my G17 was softer and flatter shooting, I was somewhat disappointed but now I don't think it's losing anything to the Glock 17/19 other than expensive magazines.

    I had shot enough Glocks when i worked at a gun shop/gun range. Just never liked their crappy triggers. Yes, they are reliable and delendable, but so is HK. When i held the VP9, the ergonomics is excellent. Much better than Glock. 3 left panels, 3 rught panels, and 3 rear straps give 27 possible grip configurations. The "ears" on the rear of thr slide actually yelps to pull the slide back to chamber a round. The paddle mag release actually improves on the button mag release. Accuracy is excellent.
    It seems that HK took the Glock and addressed the deficiencies and applied teir own improvements to make it a much better pistol than Glock.

    Almost chose the VP9 at the time I bought my Walther PPQ; both are excellent choices,
    quite similar in quality, ergonomics and "shootability".
    The deciding factors were a)that incredible PPQ trigger and b) a more pronounced mag
    release paddle (which is a wonderful thing once you get past pushing a button).
    They both embarrass any Glock, too, hands down.

    Ideally, I would want three dots below the rear sights---the first red- dot indicating the round is chambered and a second red-dot indicating it is cocked. I would then want both of these dots covered with a large blue-dot indicating the manual safety is on.
    This would enable one to just flick the manual safety to shoot from a chambered and cocked pistol. Alternately, one could chamber and decock it, and then cock it again with the de-cocking lever.
    Regardless of how one does it, a firearm should indicate its status with the requisite dots.
    It's strange that even HK doesn't incorporate a manual safety feature into its pistols, any longer.
    The vast majority of people are neither law enforcement personnel nor criminals. Those who really need pistols aren't even obsessed with firearms or want to be perceived as macho. I also can't think of why people who really need pistols would want a varied collection of them.
    I believe people( like myself) need a quick striker-fired pistol with a manual safety to minimize the likelihood of accidental discharge.
    Accidental discharge can occur if kids or irresponsible guests obtain access to the weapon or if a person is a little sleepy or drunk. Accidents are called accidents precisely because their likelihood of happening is minuscule, but still do happen when things go drastically wrong. Yes, we need to keep guns away from children and we need to be sharp and alert when we handle them, but there's no 100% surety against any of these.
    I personally like the HK P7m13, the FN 5.7, and the Cz 52(in parts where 7.62x25mm ammo is more abumdant than 9mm ammo)but would want a modern 9mm pistol with widely available 9mm ammo.
    I would also like handguns like the S&W Governor or Taurus Judge that shoot 45 long, 45 ACP and 410 shells for self defense against pests in the wild.
    Striker fired pistols are quick, so I naturally prefer them. 5.7x28mm pistols are even quicker, but don't have ammo widely available.
    A hammer is only preferable to the striker-pin to strike a dud, again, with a DA trigger or if a striker-fired pistol is likely to be so extensively used that the strike pin would turn weak.
    I think a 4"" barell is adequate for concealed carry and not too range- or performance-impaired even otherwise.
    Heavy pistols can counter the recoil, but do extract a penalty in operational time.
    I would typically want a 4" barrel for a concealed carry handgun and a 6" to 7.5" barrel for a longer handgun in my car and home, preferably with rear sights that can be varied for range, so I don't have to carry an SMG in my car or a shotgun/rifle at home because even though rifles/SMGs are more accurate, handguns are quicker to aim and operate, and even though shotguns are point-ans-shoot cannons, they're difficult to maneuver in enclosed spaces.
    I would never carry any firearm that doesn't have a manual safety, but a revolver even though slower than pistols can work through even duds.
    I wouldn't mind paying a premium for a manual safety that, at least, blocks the firing pin and, perhaps, even the trigger and the slide(to prevent shots by kids even if the firing pin safety fails because of wear, rusting, poor servicing or some other cause), provided it doesn't slow the pistol once the mechanism is deactivated, regardless of how cumbersome or complex the safety mechanism is.
    Every design process comprises tradeoffs that improve some performance parameters by degrading others. When we squeeze the trigger, most of us pull the gun to the right and some even push it slightly down, whereas the ballistic recoil pushes the barrel up. A soft trigger and the weight of the gun are the only two variables that can counteract that phenomenon in a pistol because muzzle stabilisers or flash suppressors(like those on the AKM, AK74 and AK103) could burn people with small firearms, and a recoil-absorbing piston(like that on the AK103) would make the firearms heavy and prone to wear and malfunction unless meticulously checked and cleaned.
    Rotating bolts will be too light on handguns, but rotating barrels or rotating counter-acting weights could also absorb some recoil on handguns, albeit at the penalty of weight, wear, and frequent maintenance, repairs and replacement.
    Double-action triggers can cycle through the duds in a low-capacity revolver, but not in a pistol because of the considerable force required to move the extractor on the slide.
    Laser range finders and self-ranging and adjusting scopes could correct for distance, elevation and wind for each cartridge and barrel, but would again make the guns heavy and unwieldy, alert the intruders, and render a scope useless, without battery or ambient renewable energy, and would also considerably slow-down the acquisition and engagement time.
    Simple weapons are the most reliable, once you train on them, but not the best performing ones.
    I'm in my mid-50s, but have children, all under 8 years of age, so will never keep any firearm without an external safety.
    I've not used firearms since the 1990s, but studied them in Jane's Infantry Weapons and used them extensively through the 70s and 80s, and early 90s, as a precocious boy and a curious young man.

Yes, not being a fast mag changer could get me killed, in 1 % of self defense incidents? Ok, but I won't be worrying too much about it, ever. Hickok, that was another great vid. Thanks for that. As a suggestion from a guy who is not in your league, as a shooter. Use your right index finger on the paddle/lever mag release, on that style of release. It works great

It makes what little recoil a 9mm has turn basically into nothing. On top of the having your thumbs forward and free, allows you too hit that safety quite a bit easier😉
