This is the exact thing that's going on down at El Paso international (KELP) through Atlantic Aviation. The have the only public ramp and I get a different answer for fees every time I call. I usually just want to stop in for 30 min to 2 hours. They usually quote me $70+ (sometimes $100+) just to park the plane on the ramp for an hour while I run into town but offer to lower the fee (never waived though) if you buy their fuel at outrageous prices. The prices to tie down outside overnight, not even in a hangar, are even more outrageous. It's gotten to the point that no local GA pilots want to go there anymore because it's too shady and expensive.
You can afford to own or rent an airplane!!! Don’t bitch about the associated costs! Drive if the costs are to high. I’ve been in aviation for thirty five years. Every airport iv ever worked at , the city or county or the local municipality sets the parking fee that they charge the FBO for any AC coming to their ramp. These are of course passed on tho the customer.

I will say though, that I've thoroughly researched the matter and at this specific airport, the ramp fee is not set by the city. Also, to tell me that anyone who can afford to rent a plane, can also afford extravagant ramp/fuel fees is pretty presumptuous. I'm not rich, nor are most pilots in GA. I sacrificed a lot to even afford to rent an old C-172 and it was never "affordable". The point is that these costs are prohibitive from more people getting general aviation at a time when the industry really needs more young pilots.
