Replacing the upper oil pan on a jeep wrangler with a 3.8L This is the most common leak found on these jeeps & this is the simple repair that takes no time to repair.

I just paid $480 to have mine replaced because I had heard that you had to pull the transmission. Shame on me for not doing more research. Could've easily done this thanks to this video :(

What are the clips (spacer) that hold the lines to the upper pan called? Does anyone know where I can find replacements?

That actually looks super easy. Is there a tightening sequence for the bolts? Is the process the same for the 3.6?

When I click on your link for the gasket in Amazon it tells me it does not fit a 2015 jeep wrangler but according to your headings of your video it does.
so does it or does not fit a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon?
Sorry yes this one does not fit the 2015 rubicon but the oil pan is similar. Part gasket is different. I will update my product links. Thanks for letting me know.

Great video; very helpful. Had my 2010 in the shop for a separate reason, and when I asked about the oil leak, they suggested I just wait 3k miles (I'd just gotten an oil change a week prior) and that whoever changes my oil next should be able to easily replace the gasket at that time. But that if I had them do it that day (the day I had it in the shop), they'd have to drain all the new oil I'd just paid for at my oil change, and my recent oil change would've been for naught. Is that not the case?
They could have just collected the oil that was just used but they’re right. It makes more sense to just add new oil & filter reassures the work was done correctly.
Sounds like you found an honest shop. Most would just say screw you and charge you for the oil change too

105 inch pounds? Calculater says that is 8.75 foot pounds. That sound right?
Seems like most of the videos pertain to the upper oil pan gasket. Does the lower one hardly ever fail? I need to replace my upper as well, but wondering if the lower should be replaced to. Oil has run down to it, so not really sure if it's leaking or just from the upper.
Honestly I’ve never seen the lower one leak. If you feel like the lower one might be leaking then I would just go ahead & remove it also & repair it. The lower one just using silicon there is no gasket for it. A wire wire on a drill comes in handy to remove the old silicone.

Successfully replaced mine following your video. Thank you! However, I still have small drops of oil formulating on the shield. I think it’s coming from the driver side valve cover. Any suggestions?
Usually when a leak forms from the driver side valve cover check the hose that’s around the pcv valve it gets old & cracks then oil leaks from there making it look like a valve cover leak.

@@JJBanuelos You were spot on! PCV valve hose slid right off. The pcv valve slid right out of the housing. There is no way this was sealed properly. I wonder if replacing the hose and valve will fix my small evap leak code?? Thanks again for all your help. You saved me a lot of time and money!

good, i have a question, what torque pounds to install?
Oil pan bolts are 105inch pounds or 9ft lbs. there’s no manufacturer bolt sequence. Thanks for watching & please make sure to subscribe!

Wes Dingman yeah for sure you really don’t need a torque wrench it’s just good practice to have. As long as there tight but not super tight it should be fine. You don’t want to have it to tight we’re all the silicone gets pushed out & doesn’t have a good seal.

On these there’s only one oil pan. On the 2012-18 there’s a upper & lower. Which on those the lower leaks. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching

How did you determine it was the upper oil pan gasket and not the lower oil pan gasket or valve cover? Rear main seal?
Wasn’t coming from top when I notice just lower half of engine was covered in oil. Not rear main, once lower trans/engine cover is removed the torque converter is dry. Wasn’t lower oil pan since upper one is wet. Oil can’t move up. Hope this helps. If all else fails just engine degrease the whole thing & watch for oil seepage As time goes. Hope this helps.

@@JJBanuelos If I'm removing both upper and lower oil pan, should I take the upper off first and then do the lower when it's already off? Or should I take the lower off, finish it, and then the upper? I'm trying to find the most efficient way to do this. Also, is the lower oil pan torque same as upper with 105 inch pounds?
512 TXS If you’re going to do both I would start with the lower one first since it just use a silicone. Since the bottom one is off thank you can go ahead and take the upper one off. And then install the upper and then install the lower one. Can’t find any specs for lower one. I would assume it would be the same as the top ones.

How did you torque spec the 10mm bolts to 105 lbs? Is that not too tight?
Inch lb...torque. Not lbs.
@@alanborja5956 Actually, he hammered it on to 400 ft lbs. He did use a 400-ft lb impact wrench out of sheer laziness, after all.

@@JJBanuelos strange because the mechanics database does not even have this listed as a repair doesn’t even show any labor hours even searched under Upper pan gasket.
Is the same as the rear main seal?
No sir this is completely different. The rear main seal is located between transmission & engine.
How can you tell the difference
When you pull that lower engine cover the one with the 15mm bolts, you’ll see oil coming from higher up past the oil pan indicating a rear main leak.

Dang! Torque to 105!?!? I just snapped one of my bolts off trying to get to 105.
I believe I said inch pounds not foot pounds on there…
@@JJBanuelos you sure did. I saw 105 and then verified the 105 online and just glossed right over the inch. I'll be having fun tomorrow. It was one of the corner bolts in the rear under that cover. Gonna be hard to get to.
