I started playing flute 4 years ago when I started middle school. No private lessons, I was learning through the school's concert band. I'm so happy with the choice I made to play flute because I'm really starting love it even more especially since I started marching band last year. I'm hoping to get private lessons and try out the piccolo. :) I still need to work a bit on my flute playing so that my director will consider at least letting me try it. I've been practing so much every day outside of marching rehearsal because I really want to play piccolo, it just looks so fun. I hope to start learning it next year 🙏

I can vouch for your reasons to wear earplugs. As a piccolo player in my high school marching band years, I spent plenty of time standing (ten, hut!) in front of first-chair trumpets. Not to mention those hours of practice that left me pleased with finally reaching those high notes (all hail the high C)! This is very important advice and not something I ever thought of while I was in the whirlwind of Wind Ensemble... take care of your ears while you still can! I know I’m paying the price when I’m mixing my own audio... 15+ years later. There’s a reason I can’t hear certain frequencies anymore.

Hi Gina. I have just come across your videos for the first time as I’m considering buying an alto flute. I want to join others in thanking you for pointing out the hearing protection. I’m almost 58 now and remember when the Walkman came out on the market. If anyone reading this is too young to know what a Walkman is, look it up and have a good laugh at how portable music started. My mother always said “turn that thing down or you’ll damage your hearing.” Naturally I didn’t turn it down! But no one suggested minding my ears while playing flute. And I played it a lot, I still do. And no one suggested minding my ears when I took up bass guitar or when I joined my first band or when I took up saxophone. I now have to wear hearing aids as my high frequency hearing is virtually non existent. I am practical about it insofar as I’m a working musician. I have the best job in the world and I’ve enjoyed every second of destroying my hearing. My only regret is that we were not educated about ear protection back then. It was presumed that those in the world of rock bands would destroy their hearing but not in the beautiful world of the flute. I would far prefer to have enjoyed every second of NOT destroying my hearing. So thank you Gina. And followers and subscribers, please take heed of Gina’s advice. Protect your ears and you will be able to enjoy your music for many, many years with your natural hearing.

I would love to see your piccolo collection! I now have 3 myself. I upgraded to a Burkart professional model about a year ago and I absolutely love it and can’t wait to get back to performing again! (I bought it a month before Covid-19 shut everything down so I haven’t had many opportunities to play it in an ensemble setting.)

Your presentation was very informative and professional. I too use ear protection when I play flute and piccolo. What I didn't know once I had my hearing checked is that I am very sensitive to loud sounds or what is called Hyperacusis. That is why I use ear protection. Loud sounds can cause you to loose your hearing later and also develop non-stop ringing in your ears. Great advice on ear protection, embouchure, starting piccolo exercises, and determining when to start playing piccolo. One of the best flute/piccolo videos so far. INCREDIBLE WORK!

I just upgraded from a student silver piccolo to a Pearl intermediate piccolo. It has a mouth piece without a lip plate. You helped me a lot listening to your video about placing the piccolo a bit higher to the lip. That really helped plus your other tips. It is a bit different playing my new piccolo compared to the old one. Thanks a bunch.

I opened your site, Gina, to see how one plays the piccolo. It's nothing I'll ever undertake at the age of 78; I was just curious. And clearly, you are an excellent piccolo instructor with a very fine, melodious voice for a filmed documentary. But what for me is the truly striking aspect of the video is your face. The features of your face are perfectly symmetrical: eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, teeth, shape of face. This is such a wondrous rarity. When one speaks of facial beauty, geometrical symmetry is of primary importance. Beauty requires it. I hope the person you've in love with knows how great a treasure this is. But if not, pass the word. --Ross Whitney, Gig Harbor, Washington

If you’re embarrassed about how earplugs look or just don’t like how they look, then it’s definitely worth investing in Loop earplugs! I got some by accident thinking they were Bluetooth earbuds. I contacted the company to let them know and they refunded me but suggested I keep them in case I end up needing earplugs or if I want to give them to a friend! I’m so glad I kept them because they have come in handy so many times! I haven’t gotten a piccolo yet, but I plan to in the near future and I’m glad I’ve got my Loops for whenever I’m ready to start!

Kudos to you for protecting your hearing as a musician! I’ve played oboe and English horn since the early 80s, but by trade I have been an audiologist and hearing conservation program manager for 23 years. If you decide to invest in custom made musician’s filtered ear plugs, I’d recommend having them made by Westone (and you want deep ear impressions). I have a pair made by one of the major hearing aid manufacturers, but they aren’t high fidelity. The high frequency harmonics pass through with those, but the fundamental and harmonics close to the fundamental are definitely attenuated and I find it impossible to monitor my timbre when playing oboe. Am very disappointed with that pair.

Hi There! I'm a retired professional tenor, choir director, church musician, etc. I worked all over NY, NJ and PA. Now, I've been restoring antique horns and I'm learning how to play them! Brigadoon was one of my first shows. I played Charlie Dalrymple. Anyway...I am going to restore an antique 6 key, piccolo that should arrive tomorrow. Crazy question....do you know where I can order barrel/tenon rings once I make some measurements? And...earplugs is an excellent idea! Hearing loss really happens! Thanks!

It’s great to know how knowing one instrument means you know how to play another instrument. All it takes is some practice to get use it playing it. Knowing to play violin helped me learn viola, cello and double bass on my own. I started learning flute about a year ago, but in regard to the piccolo I have some questions. Is the piccolo ever meant to play on its own or is it only meant to play in a group such as an orchestra? Also, say you actually play a song on the piccolo in front of a small audience like the amount of people you see in a church (maximum of 50.) If we’re required to use earplugs, does it not harm their ears?

I got a piccolo for Christmas, and I already jumped right into playing it. I should have watched this video first, because I didn’t wear ear plugs and I was already trying to play small pieces of music. This was due to my flute experience, so I knew how to play most of the notes on the piccolo. I’m starting to wear ear plugs, and I’m trying to do the low octave chromatic scale, but I can’t get a low note to come out. How can I make a lower sound?

Using flute fingerings on piccolo is only the starting point. The piccolo is conical while the flute is cylindrical. The intonation of flute fingerings on piccolo aren't quite true to pitch. Especially high D, high F#, high G, high G#/Ab. I also use different fingerings for pianissimo middle Bb, Bnat, and C. You can learn them quickly by adding them into your arpeggio practice, and it helps you blend in much better to the ensemble you're playing in.
