Would love to see more of these advice videos :) I primarily play piccolo in the wind ensemble that I play for. It’s really nice to hear people talk about it into depth because uuuh no one does 😂 I feel like it’s one of those instruments that aren’t really given it’s own spotlight if that makes sense. People just hand it to you and expect you to play it but that is not the case. It’s a whole different instrument!!
Very good advice mentioning leaks. (I work on these things). Low D is often the hardest note to play clearly if the adjustment is off or there’s a bad pad. With woodwinds, we always start at the top of the instrument and work our way down, checking for leaks and checking adjustments and regulations. So, headcork, fit of head joint, trill keys, upper stack, G# key, 1 and 1 Bb, then F, F#, E, D adjustments. Great video and advice! Somewhere I’ve got an 1800s picc in Db. Has only four keys and the rest, holes, if I recall correctly.
Just got a new piccolo because im starting to get more serious about piccolo I was just messing around trying to figure out how to stop spitting in the high register (specifically B flat) and your tip about pulling your lips back and making your aperture more flat (in the lower register) actually helped me hit that B flat a lot more consistently. You may have just saved my audition. Thank you
omg thank you Ethan! I've been trying since Christmas to get a clear note out of my piccolo but haven't been able to until i watched your video. Something just clicked when you explained it! Five minutes in and I'm already playing let it go on my piccolo. It's not perfect, but there's SOUND which is huge step!!
I’m so glad to hear that this video helped you! If you ever need any more help/have questions you can reach out to me through Instagram or Facebook and I’d be happy to chat!
When I was in high school, at our spring concert, the band director had me run through a complicated section of one song with my flute. Then the second time through he had me stand and go through that section with my piccolo. The song and the way we performed it were (unbeknownst to me) planned on purpose as I was receiving an award for band. The good ol’ days! 🤗
Glad I found this video! I’m planning to buy a piccolo flute soon. Funny story, back when I was in HS band, we were waiting to march in the Reds Opening Day Parade, my band friend at the time showed me how to play some notes and I learned Amazing Grace in five minutes 😂. To this day I can somehow play piccolo, but not the flute as my lungs find it difficult
Question! Okay so I've been playing piccolo for a like 2 years now, But I still don't know how to do vibrato. Both on my flute and piccolo. Do you have any tips?
honestly when u play try to pulse your air using your diaphragm or your muscles, also sorry this is so late I just looked up this video 😅 but go slower like at quarter notes then half notes and just keep going quicker if need to or want to
I've had four years of flute playing experience and two months of piccolo experience, so I suggest using your stomach muscles to control the air pulsation. If you're still not quite getting it, I'm sure there are several videos on how to do vibrato. Good luck!
I play the clarinet and now i wanna play the piccolo...😳Would it be beneficial to learn another instrument for when applying to colleges?...like do they like people more who can play multiple instruments?-btw im a freshman rn so i would have a while to learn) also if so what instrument would be easiest from clarinet? :)
If you’re majoring in music, you really don’t need to be experienced on another instrument. You really just want to be as good as possible on the one you’re majoring in. For music Ed students, you’ll have to learn a lot of other instruments anyway while in school. If you want to learn the piccolo for fun, go for it! It’s super fun to play. I’m not sure what would be easiest after playing clarinet, but I used to play clarinet and bass clarinet and switching to flute and piccolo wasn’t terribly hard. You might also want to learn bass clarinet or Eb clarinet if you’re majoring in clarinet since you have time to get good at those too and you’ll be unstoppable when you get to college.
@@ethannylander oh ok thank you! I don't really know what music major i want to major in yet, but Im pretty sure I don't want to be a music ed major...bc the thought of a bunch of middle or high schoolers talking about me is scary😅😅but ya never know. I think flute or piccolo would be fun to learn so maybe ill try it out sometime! + thanks for responding so quick:)
@@breeden844 I’m majoring in music ed and you pointing out that students will be talking about me in the future is making me question my life choices lmao
I have a question can you play piccolo with braces because I play it but I’m getting braces in two days I’m not worried about my flute playing but definitely my piccolo
I'm pretty sure my piccolo just is bad because I can't make a sound nor will the head joint into the piccolo. I want a wooden one or atleast a better quality piccolo
I m scared of the note cracking especially with piccolo ,with flute I m able to hide it because in the middle of the playing no One can hear It but with the piccolo if I crack Everyone will know
I lucked out wanting to play piccolo. I got to play Freshman year. And then chose whether I played piccolo or principal flute. The conductor asked and then assigned.
Super tutorial. I started playing piccolo on an ANCIENT and leaky silver piccolo in 1993.
Excellent showing the embouchure and techniques.
I've been playing the flute for almost 6 years now and I'm auditioning for band camp on flute and piccolo and this really helped me, thank you😁
eyyy same
I literally just got a piccolo 30 minutes ago and now I can play the scale that you set out (I’m an 8th grade flute)
OMG SAME I JUST GOT IT TODAY AAAAH HEHE ALSO IN EIGHTH GRADE
So I’m in 9th grade it’s my first yr marching and I got put on picolo...it’s not going well
same!
I feel ya, same here
I'm a a junior and I hadn't touched a piccolo since 8th grade sooo yeaaa I feel you, I have to move to piccolo for marching and pep band next year
this is the exact, exact same situation as me
I'm on my 2nd year of it, it's not going well but I'm better than last year
Just want to say that this is so helpful for flute players of all levels, and this really helped me, thank you!

Great video Ethan. Very informative for a prospective piccolo player like myself. Thank you.

please please please, help with my high notes! im SO confused because im changing my embrochure and nothing is happening!!!😢😮
Thank you for your video❤ It's really helpful for me !!!
now teach us how to play gohan next
I actually prefer my air stream almost straight down for my piccolo, it’s more in tune. Flute I can go from an across stream to straight down
I have trouble with the middle register. I either accidentally play an octave lower or hit the next overtone and play a fifth higher.
AWESOME Super Excellent Video!!
THANK YOU this was so helpful
I’m a trumpet in 9th and I’ve been playing since 2nd but I’m learning piccolo since yesterday and it’s not to hard but I can’t remember notes 😭
고맙습니다 my son wants to play piccolo so i am seaching and meet you 👍
Please more videos on Piccolo !! Please :)
Hi I was wondering how I can help prevent my lips from buzzing on the high notes

thankyou for your piccolo video, i think you should make more because piccolos are diffrent than flutes
i dont know how to play the piccolo and just got one and i literally can't get a note out of it
I have a question can you play piccolo with braces because I play it but I’m getting braces in two days I’m not worried about my flute playing but definitely my piccolo
so nervous switching from flute to piccolo
This helped a lot!! Thank you so much! 😁
I play flute and piano a little bit
Is the piccolo easier than the flute?
Usually not but if you do play flute piccolo will not take much time at all to learn
Piccolo is typically harder than flute, but I mastered within a month of receiving it. It's worth a shot if you want to try it out!
I'm pretty sure my piccolo just is bad because I can't make a sound nor will the head joint into the piccolo. I want a wooden one or atleast a better quality piccolo
I hope i get a piccole some day because it's so expensive
You can get a cheap one from China for $100 or less.
Great! 😂
Hey buddy! Thanks!
Hi how to play c cord please make video over this
❤wow
Did you wear any earplug while playing this?
it's recommended to; piccolos can definitely cause hearing damage/loss
I was 23 years old to play piccolo
I m scared of the note cracking especially with piccolo ,with flute I m able to hide it because in the middle of the playing no One can hear It but with the piccolo if I crack Everyone will know
I got a high C# on 3rd octave ._. Idk how tho
My favorite flute teacher, my studio teacher, who I never played piccolo for.
Of course you can play piccolo with your Thin Lips.
I lucked out wanting to play piccolo. I got to play Freshman year. And then chose whether I played piccolo or principal flute.
The conductor asked and then assigned.
5:15 🤯🤯🤯
😏
That high C is in the range that I've lost my hearing. Couldn't hear it at all
…….I have a background in flute and after learning how to play piccolo and playing it my ears are ringing…….
0:00 nah, i just clicked on it cuz i had nothing to watch...
My cat did not like this video at all 😂
background music just makes it harder to hear you
Damn you look absolutely cute
how to play piccolo: dont
Your tone isn’t the greatest but you covered basics
I thought his tone sounded good and clear. But even if it hadn't, do you really think that's something worth pointing out?
Background music distracting and unnecessary.
Womp Womp… like too bad 😅
I play a mellophone and I might ask if I can play a piccolo next year, just to try it out ofc 🥱
