This tracks with my experience. When I used the 45 1.8, I usually stopped it down to f/2, since that didn’t kill the shallow depth of field too badly but it gave the lens just enough more IQ to make the pictures tons more usable
The problem Olympus has with selling the 1.2 is that the 1.8 is so good (I own the 1.8, and it's really good). I certainly can't justify the extra cost.
If you just taking normal photo, you will not find the diffrences.. but when there is side light.. it will tell how smooth the gradation and the color tone is diffrent too
Hi, thanks for the comparison I heard that some copies of the 45mm 1.8 are softer than others. Mine is absolutely tack sharp, I was quite surpised how when I saw your side by side comparison, maybe your 45mm 1.8 is a bad copy ?
Meh.... i wasnt blown away by the 1.2 lens performance over the 1.8, they look very similar and if you have to pixel peep to see a tiny c-hair of difference its not worth it... i will stick with my 45 1.8....
If you can’t see the difference, then you need a visit with the eye Dr. if your clients can’t see a difference then Keep your 1.8. I could see the difference immediately...and would not be able to use those results at 1.8.
Is this being shot with a crop sensor? I've got a g85 micro 4/3. I do primarily video with weddings and such. Would the results be any different with the crop factor?
Hi Joseph, Thanks for the great video. Just pushed the button on a S/H F1.2 lens (I have a 1.8). I was wondering what brand/model your backpack, shown at 3:30 onward, is? It looks great for carrying gripped bodies. Thanks. Cheers, Kevin
Nice video and lovely children too. I chose to buy the 45mm f/1.2 and have no regrets. However in the UK it is about six times the price of the smaller lens.
I would love to see this comparison with the lenses stopped down a stop or two. I wonder if the performance would be closer. I tend to agree with PIXLHeart below. The first image from the 1.8 looks slightly out of focus to me.
My testing has shown to me the 45mm f/1.8 doesn't come into it's own at the edges until f/2.5 - Shooting wide open to f/2.2 and it falls apart at the edges - Recently I've been disappointed in the IQ for this workhorse lens since I tend to shoot at the margins of lighting and prefer wide open to create that separation or in my work as a documentary and street photographer, because of those said marginal lighting conditions. I have mixed feelings about this lens and I've been shooting with it since early 2016 so it's been put through its paces quite a bit (I shoot ONLY fixed primes) - and your side by side comparison with the Pro f/1.2 version seems to confirm my findings - given I shoot with 3-Pen-f bodies in my daily documentary and street photography work, I'm unsure if using the larger and heavier Pro primes is worth it - The cost isn't really an issue in my case - this is about the trade offs in portability in my work vs IQ . Given the recent announcement of Olympus selling off it's camera and lens division to JIP - I'm questioning whether to continue down this path with Olympus. Olympus has produced an amazing system, but now they are divesting themselves from that and given what JIP did to the VAIO computer brand, I question if they aren't going to do eventually the same thing to the Olympus camera and lens line. All the assurances from various Olympus Ambassadors on here on TH-cam still seems to bring into question the long term viability of the system. And I should know, one of my friends and colleague is a visionary and we've had many private discussions since the announcement. Their NDA has prevented them from speaking any further on this but has advised me to hold tight for the time being given the recent lens lineup update announcement (JIP, please update the Premium primes to weather sealed versions and a weather sealed Pen-f Mk2!!!). From a financial standpoint, I'm heavily invested in the Olympus system (A total of 5 bodies, 8 lenses, 4 flashes) and the ONLY other line worth considering for me is Fuji's Xpro/XE series bodies and their fast primes, but the size/weight difference for me is substantial. Of course all the amateur/TH-cam wannabes are crying wolf and say ditch your Olympus system... I'm looking at this from as much of a pragmatic standpoint as possible. @JosephEllis - what are your thoughts as a working professional's standpoint?
Hi Joseph, fyi there seems to be something wrong with your audio, when listening in stereo I only hear your voice on the left channel, solved from 5.24 onwards
Nice comparison. I love the 1.8 and it’s sharpness blow me away until now... the 1.2 is unbelievable! I like the 1.8 portability for casual shooting as it’s not my primary lens
The sun falls so quickly at that hour and the available light drops rapidly fast the further along it goes. How many minutes were between the use of the 1.2 and the 1.8? Probably should have shot with the 1.2 second instead of first. I just feel like some of these examples at golden hour are not fair to compare since the available light is so much different every 2 minutes.
In Asia, the 1.2 costs five times more than the 1.8 while the 1.2 is better but is it 5 times better ? Hard to say. For most consumer level of photography, the 1.8 would be quite enough but shooting for professional environment where money is involved, you want the best gear and some clients care about the look of your gear and the 45 1.2 does look more professional
sandb Thanks, If I had been thinking about it both Lightroom and Photo Mechanic have a nice side by side comparison feature too.. will use in the future.
I have both, and each are awesome portrait lenses. The 75 however requires a lot more working distance to get the same field of view as the 45s. In wedding photography I use the 75 for ceremonies mostly and the 45 Pro for everything else.
I have a 45mm f1.8 and the photo of the boy is NOT a true representation of the it's quality. My portraits are pin sharp and crystal clear. You either have camera shake (surely not possible with Oly IS - which may be faulty or turned off) or the subject is not in focus or the lens is faulty and needs to go back to the retailer. I see these are .jpeg images. Were the originals RAW I wonder.
Excellent video. I just ordered a new 45mm f/1.8. I am sure that the f/1.2 version is better in every perceptible way but it is way out of my budget. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Something wrong with your 45mm f1.8 shot... i dont know what it is... looks like it didnt get focus on his face. Ive shot portraits with the 45mm f1.8 @f1.8 and I was getting very sharp results.
It is very good compare between these two lens, recently I upgrade my 45 1.8 to 1.2, I am very happy with it. But I have little issue with this lens, the image quality of four corner are really difference, but it become better after f4. I know if I shoot landscape shouldn't with wide open aperture, I am surprised to see the image quality have big different between four corner
I have the 45mm 1.8 for years and it is just fine. I wish that Olympus would have made a more head shot friendly fast focal length lens. Something like a 55 1.2 maybe though I do also have the 75mm 1.8 and you just can’t better.
Using your son's photo, based on his face the f1.8 seems a little soft, the f1.2 a tack sharper. Maybe you focus on the body(seems sharper on the jacket) instead of the face?
Well, I took a dozen or more of each image, focusing on his face every time and picked the best of each I could find. I think this is accurate to how my lenses are performing, of course your samples might be better/different than mine. I was also encouraged that the performance in the closeup matches the full length image in terms of the sharpness differences. Last please do keep in mind these kind of side by side comparisons are a bit crazy because it's only in the direct comparison that we can evaluate tiny details. I do think many people would be and are happy with the performance of the 45 1.8 which is an excellent lens.
Very good video thank you. You being a pro I have the confidence in knowing the images you take are taken properly where as if I did the same in my camera shop confidence in the shots is the issue, so what you did helps a great deal. Although from what I saw the differences where greater in first comparison, or was you comparing different aspects of shot? Thanks again very helpful.
I do like the rendering of the 1.2 and I notice prices for this lens have finally dropped. I can see the 1.2 being great for bedroom photography. However with outdoor environmental portraiture the shutter speed may be higher than 1/8000 even if you extended to low ISO and even more especially if you are further underexposing the background for off camera flash. Could switch to electronic shutter 1/1600 but then I saw a clip that you are somehow loosing some of the background blur (not sure if that is the case with Olympus system) Of course the other option is an ND filter. What do you think and what stop filter would I get? Of course this lens may be sharper at 1.8, but you are really buying for the 1.2. Another solution is stick with golden hour! I was also thinking that if your shutter speed is over 1/8000 then probably its just too dam bright anyway!
Now that the newer OM cameras have the built in ND called Live ND... I can't wait to try using it out with a 1.2 outside at 1.2 for lower shutter speeds with my EM1mark3, but just at a glance... the Live ND feature looks designed for very long shutter speeds to use on water, clouds, etc as I cannot get the camera to fire a flash when in Live ND mode. Which is sad, because I LOVE using a flash with an ND filter on my Nikon.
Hello Joseph, thank you for a great channel! (+1) I already have this Olympus gear: 45 f1.8 - it is stunning for the size and the price, it's a joy to use it 17 f1.8 for reportage / when I go somewhere and want as little weight as possible, also a really nice one 12-40 f2.8 - for traveling, landscapes and bad weather conditions, I like it a lot 60 2.8 for macro photography 25mm 1.2 Pro - my absolutely favourite lens so far, 99% of shots are wide open on this one :) PEN F as a light weight / good weather camera wich I like to shoot with a lot. OMD EM1 MKii - if I need a camera with really fast autofocus, a camera that can take a beating & bad weather conditions (just ordered it :D). I've almost bought a 7-14 f2.8, but would love to use a nd or polarisation filter on it, (you need an extra filter rig for this lens to do it) a Panasonic 8-18 could be more practical solution but it's just f2.8-4. (Still hoping for a prime 7-8mm f1.2 to come out, or at least f1.8). Do you have any suggestion for a good ultra wide prime lens for mft? Greetings from Germany! Kind regards S.
Not knowing what your kids look like in the flesh, but it just seemed to me that the skin tones looked more natural on the 1.8 lens. Perhaps the 1.2 was just a tad blown out, and if the photo exposure was adjusted? I think this is really noticeable on your daughters photo.
I did compensate for the change in aperture as I was shooting and I did notice the difference in brightness despite that compensation as I was comparing the two..not sure if the 1.2 is just a bit brighter or if the ambient light was changing during the shoot but I thought it was the most fair to leave it as is... Overall I don’t think there is a noticeable shift in color between the two but I haven’t tested that aspect in particular. Maybe I’ll try and do something more controlled with color in the future. Thanks for your thoughts.
I did go into the photo shop and tested these side by side taking pics of the shop girl standing both in the shop and the shop doorway, in the shop under shop lighting I really couldn't see any difference, maybe only in the micro contrast, in the doorway under the natural lighting it was more obvious, I noticed the 1.2 rendered skin tones a tad warmer and was a tad sharper the differences being so close it's pretty hard justifying buying the 1.2
Really interesting comparison thank you. I have the 1.8 and it's my least favourite Oly lens. Not as sharp wide open as either the 75mm or 17mm 1.8 lenses I own. I'd like the 1.2 for the sharpness and the manual focus clutch.
Lovely kids and nice video. I'm interested in an additional comparison between these bot lenses and the 12-40 mm zoom at 25 mm. I want to see the differences in sharpness and the DOF.
Excellent review and comparison. 1.2 is noticeably better, the picture of your daughter really highlights this, the 1.2 really looks a 3D image, great sense of depth in the picture where the 1.8 looks flatter. And please don't say bokeh balls again lol, u sound possessed when saying it.
1.2 obliterates the 1.8. That's not only the wide open performance. It's much much much more crisp and sharp then 1.8. Would choose 1.2 over 1.8 art work anytime end of story.
I love the name Vivian, I want another daughter so that I can name her Vivian. She looks about as excited to be there as my daughter would. Enjoying your videos, thanks.
I really need to try the lens, a bit hard to tell from your upload, all looks pretty blurry to me, that said from my other pro experience I would expect a tad sharper and tad increase in micro contrast, you might be better in the longer term to invest in the SonyA7iii and the 85 FE 1.8 if you are serious about getting sharp portraits, the continuous eye auto is a real game changer, Olympus missed a major opportunity there
I have my Pen-F since November 2017 and the 45mm 1.8 since Jan 2017. Yes I am very happy with this camera and with this 45mm 1.8 lens, but the difference to the 1.2 is breathtaking. But since I'm not a professional, investing in the 1.2 would be a complete waste of money.
This tracks with my experience. When I used the 45 1.8, I usually stopped it down to f/2, since that didn’t kill the shallow depth of field too badly but it gave the lens just enough more IQ to make the pictures tons more usable
What a great channel for the pro Olympus photography community! Everyone needs to subscribe!

Dude, great comparison, but your photo taken with the 1.8 is clearly not in focus
I ve got the lense myself, and its sharp as a razorblade :)!
Wish mine was wide open...
exactly... I think its front focus alittle bit... I duno... but it looks damn muddy
Meh.... i wasnt blown away by the 1.2 lens performance over the 1.8, they look very similar and if you have to pixel peep to see a tiny c-hair of difference its not worth it... i will stick with my 45 1.8....
Mediterranean or Nordic c-hair?
If you can’t see the difference, then you need a visit with the eye Dr. if your clients can’t see a difference then Keep your 1.8. I could see the difference immediately...and would not be able to use those results at 1.8.
@@saintmovies7735 lmao, you think clients pixel peep as much as actual photographers?
@@InertiaEffect Art Directors at the bigger companies definitely do pixel peep. I have also often been asked about my equipment before getting a job.
Was the audio messed up in this video? why was the music and commentary separated between the left and right channels, its really distracting
I would like to see a test of the 45 1.2 against the 12x40 2.8 Pro shot at 40mm.
The differences will be mostly in the dept of field (less background blur with the 2.8).
Is this being shot with a crop sensor? I've got a g85 micro 4/3. I do primarily video with weddings and such. Would the results be any different with the crop factor?
As an Amateur on a tight budget, it's nice to see how minute the differences can be.
Nice comparison!

похоже 1,8 просто мутный какой-то

Exactly my thoughts in this regard.

Yes the build quality, weather sealing and faster
Thank you for this comparison im looking into getting the panasonic GH9 and these 2 lenses will be one of my first lense purchases.
Joseph, great video. It would be interesting to see the 75/1.8 vs 45/1.2 (sharpness and the blur)
Thank you for sharing it with us
Nice video! Did you just put your 1.2 in your pocket without back cover!!!? ;)
Thanks for the comparison. TIP: When comparing 2 or more images, try Window > Arrange > Tile
sandb Thanks, If I had been thinking about it both Lightroom and Photo Mechanic have a nice side by side comparison feature too.. will use in the future.
Why do you zoom that much in?...

I have the 1.8 and it's always in my bag. Great lens. The 1.2 is even better!
Great review, thanks!!!

Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Im a travel photographer, would u recommend me to upgrade to the 12-40mm f2.8 pro len ?
It's an AMAZING lens. I have it paired with my Panasonic G9.
Dallas guy here, too! Cheers... Good video. That little 45mm is a great lens.
I found f1.8 better. But how do both compare in low light indoors like conference hall or wedding dance floor.
Something wrong with your 45mm f1.8 shot... i dont know what it is... looks like it didnt get focus on his face.
Ive shot portraits with the 45mm f1.8 @f1.8 and I was getting very sharp results.

Might have been better to have used a tripod. No doubt then about possible camera shake.
no. Just the 1.2 is better.
Really nice review and comparison. What camera and lens did you use to shoot the video?
Very good video thank you. You being a pro I have the confidence in knowing the images you take are taken properly where as if I did the same in my camera shop confidence in the shots is the issue, so what you did helps a great deal. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻great informative video thanks
Great comparison. It would be hard to spend anything on the 45 1.8 if you didn't already have it. I'm bummed actually.
Hello Joseph,
thank you for a great channel! (+1)
I already have this Olympus gear:
45 f1.8 - it is stunning for the size and the price, it's a joy to use it
17 f1.8 for reportage / when I go somewhere and want as little weight as possible, also a really nice one
12-40 f2.8 - for traveling, landscapes and bad weather conditions, I like it a lot
60 2.8 for macro photography
25mm 1.2 Pro - my absolutely favourite lens so far, 99% of shots are wide open on this one :)
PEN F as a light weight / good weather camera wich I like to shoot with a lot.
OMD EM1 MKii - if I need a camera with really fast autofocus, a camera that can take a beating & bad weather conditions
(just ordered it :D).
Kind regards
S.
I did go into the photo shop and tested these side by side taking pics of the shop girl standing both in the shop and the shop doorway, in the shop under shop lighting I really couldn't see any difference, maybe only in the micro contrast, in the doorway under the natural lighting it was more obvious, I noticed the 1.2 rendered skin tones a tad warmer and was a tad sharper the differences being so close it's pretty hard justifying buying the 1.2
You could tell right off the bat without zooming in that your son's jacket looked way crisper with the f1.2
Really interesting comparison thank you. I have the 1.8 and it's my least favourite Oly lens. Not as sharp wide open as either the 75mm or 17mm 1.8 lenses I own. I'd like the 1.2 for the sharpness and the manual focus clutch.
You must have a bad copy. My first 45 1.8 was like that. My second one is so much better. I don't see how the 17 1.8 could be sharper than the 45 1.8.
Lovely kids and nice video. I'm interested in an additional comparison between these bot lenses and the 12-40 mm zoom at 25 mm. I want to see the differences in sharpness and the DOF.
Hi, great video! what camera are you shooting?
IBmusic_vector he has oly em1 mk 1 and mk2
Nice! Now is time to make a comparison between the Olympus and the Nocticron, the 1.2 Battle!
Well if you can bring yours to Dallas sometime I’m happy to do it
LOL, I was thinking about that.
the moment I hold the camera my kids run in every direction away..LOL wonderful compare and amazing talents…!
Nice but does it justify the price????..I have the 1.8 but I also bought the Kamlan 1.1 50mm and I think I'll keep that instead..Good video though...
Close. Def 1.2 has the edge but not for what I do (mostly film) and considering price. I do love the 25mm pro
Nice to see how a pro changes lenses :-)
The 45mm 1.2 is the best lens I've ever used
Thanks for your review, from Japan.
Why is your sound more to the left ear...
thanks for doing this
Good work!
I could tell a bokeh difference but I thought the 1.8 had better contrast, weird
Great video.
Man, you speak only from left spekaer, mine has no left speakers
So it looks like you only need 45mm F1.2 if you are a wedding photographer. Gotta stick with my 45mm F1.8.
Oh this was so cute 😍
Like the color on pro
1.2 obliterates the 1.8. That's not only the wide open performance. It's much much much more crisp and sharp then 1.8. Would choose 1.2 over 1.8 art work anytime end of story.
Well, I still don't like this "feathered bokeh" of the pro version.
I love the name Vivian, I want another daughter so that I can name her Vivian. She looks about as excited to be there as my daughter would. Enjoying your videos, thanks.
Did you know your voice is only coming out of the left ear bud?
Advice - your "foreground" music is annoyingly loud and distracts from your narrative
I really need to try the lens, a bit hard to tell from your upload, all looks pretty blurry to me, that said from my other pro experience I would expect a tad sharper and tad increase in micro contrast, you might be better in the longer term to invest in the SonyA7iii and the 85 FE 1.8 if you are serious about getting sharp portraits, the continuous eye auto is a real game changer, Olympus missed a major opportunity there
Zardos Spinosa i have no issues with the eye autofocus on my Panasonic g85...
Cogent analysis.
45,1.2 vs 75,1.8 .... ;-)
The difference is in my opinion huge! It is another league - holy s*it!
Shot wide open... I agree. Stopped down, even just a bit the 1.8 sharpens up a ton. Both great lenses.

Sorry, I can't tolerate such bizarre and atrocious audio.
