Climate change - living on the water | DW Documentary

  • Sea levels are rising faster and faster, threatening 700 million people who live on the world’s coasts. Will water become the habitat of the future? Visionary projects for a life with the tides are forging ahead worldwide.
Experts forecast that by 2100, sea levels will be two meters higher than they are today. This could force 40 percent of the world’s population out of their homes, for example, in Mumbai, Tokyo, Guangzhou or Bangladesh. The US won’t be spared either. Miami, New Orleans and New York would also have to be evacuated. Entire city districts would be under water. Climate change would drastically alter our metropolitan areas.
That's why ideas that originated in science fiction have now becoming reality. Floating and underwater buildings could become places of refuge. What sounds like a utopia is soon to become reality. The first pioneers are already living in floating neighborhoods. Could the South Pacific paradise of Tahiti also be saved in this way?
This is still all tantalizing luxury. Visionary hotel operators offer rooms with an underwater view. Or dinner during which fish and marine life are a feature in floating restaurants. Many of these futuristic plans involve water. Will we be farming on the sea? Will the "SeaOrbiter” floating research station designed by Parisian architect Jacques Rougerie get underway soon? Or will we walk through seaports on floating boulevards?

“In the third Tajalli (effulgence) of the Book of Tajalliyat (Book of Effulgences), We have mentioned: “Arts, crafts and sciences uplift the world of being, and are conducive to its exaltation. Knowledge is as wings to man’s life, and a ladder for his ascent. Its acquisition is incumbent upon everyone. The knowledge of such sciences, however, should be acquired as can profit the peoples of the earth, and not those, which begin with words and end with words. Great indeed is the claim of scientists and craftsmen on the peoples of the world. Unto this beareth witness the Mother Book in this conspicuous station.”

It’s just a no brainer. And it amazes me especially the people that are prone to flooding like Texas and Louisiana don’t have these. Could go door to door and sell this product like solar panels lol. I'm not 100% sure you're not being facetious, I hope you are. But if we went by your "sound logic" based in sarcasm, well then we should probably halt all current construction on boats, ships, and hell even messages in a bottle should be outlawed. I don't mean to be hyperbolic but I'm sure the point is salient that the water displaced by such things is negligible when compared to the genuine threat of sea level rise posed by the over one million tonned ice shelves the sizes of small countries. That unlike floating concrete won't melt in slightly below room temperature water. Not to mention the glaring fact that if it's for survival the amount needed to be displaced is moot if it's over the submerged city that you once called "home," and those few tons displacement are all that stands between you and your family having to figure out how evolve a pair of gills. We have enough vacant buildings in just the USA to fit every single homeless person in the world. Building Kevin Costner's, Waterworld, with cities all over the earth's oceans is a HUGE waste of energy and would cause even more damage and pollution digging resources out of the earth, refining them, processing them, and chopping down more forests for lumber. We already pollute the lakes, rivers and oceans while living on land. How about we keep our pollution limited to the land first, before we go spreading out over even more environments, covering more of the face of the earth.

Currently such a house costs about €500,000 to €600,000 in Rotterdam (The Netherlands).
However, the currently ordered houses are prognosed to cost about €400,000 for similar more efficiently build houses.
The company building these specific houses for the Rotterdam area is striving to build these type of houses for about €200,000 in the forseeable future. Which is possible only when this industry is scaled up.
Comparable traditional "land" houses currently costs about €300,000 (and up) in Rotterdam. While a relatively moderate appartment costs about €200,000 (and up) in Rotterdam. Note: Upperclass housing in Rotterdam is far more expensive. €600,000 and up for an upperclass house is not uncommon in Rotterdam (or Amsterdam).
Note: You can find cheaper housing in Rotterdam. But a) not by much and b) either very small or of low living quality.
To my knowledge, no taxpayer money is invested in building these houses. I do not exclude that some taxpayer money is invested in innovative solutions of which the design of waterbased housing is one of them. This money usually goes to universities or other nonprofit organisations.
Concluding (with respect to The Netherlands):
Yes. It is currently more expensive. But the expenses are going down each year. It is not that much more expensive (or even cheaper) when compared to the upperclass housing in (for instance) Rotterdam or Amsterdam. And no, no taxpayer money is wasted to serve the elite. At least, not in The Netherlands.

What a concept!!! Brilliant. The saying "we can't fight the water/nature, we have to embrace it" is wisely said. Many visionaries in our lifetime have been opposed by th petty-minded and those with rigid, stale and one track mind thoughts. Yet, somehow miraculously these visionaries have proved their point. So don't worry about them haters, when their life is at risk, everyone will gather their tails in between their legs and follow the rest of the population. Those who don't will simply perish into non-existence. This is not debatable topic, this is a hard fact and the sooner you come to terms the better for you and your offsprings (if any). Once again well done 'DW', this was eye opening.

I thought there was something romantic in the idea that you can design something that wouldn't be built for the next 3 generations, but what are a few hundred years in the grand scheme of things anyway? very inspiring!

Marvellous. Would the factories to make the steel and concrete of these floaters be on other floaters? What about rusty and patched up floating homes and factories? How will you patch them up? How will these floaters process sewage, get clean water, and get electrical power? How will these floaters cope with ocean storms surges and heavy wave action? Hmmm. The nice looking design on the video doesn’t cut it.
How would you get the minerals, iron, metals, coal etc to make these floaters if the world becomes water world?

The oceans are already destroyed. When you see mega trawlers hauling in everything in their wake and there is no international enforcement of many of these countries that illegally fish. You can see in Asia what they have done and now they have few fish and mostly box jellyfish. So what do they do, they go further and further out. I remember in the 90s when Canada started the moritorium on Cod and found the Spaniard and others and fished illegally with little consequences. Despite the moritorium and restrictions occurring in the 90s, the cod fisheries have still not rebounded and it's 30 years later. And this is just one example. We are killing the world and no one seems to care. For myself, in my entire life I've had one forkful of fish in 1968 and never have eaten seafood or fish product since. I try to live sustainably, I grow a garden every year organically and have solar panels on my house. I can nearly guarantee by the time I am 85 if not sooner, this world will be close to uninhabitable.

About 30 years ago an architect in Britain demonstrated a house built on 4 columns floating inside wells built into the ground. When the water level was low the house rested on the ground. As the water level rose the columns would be pushed up by the water, lifting the house. So, self-levelling, always dry and laterally stable as the columns are suported on all sides.
And in the 80s there was a french startup which prototyped an affordable 4 seater amphibious family car.
Really no need to reinvent the wheel.

We should really let go of the terror of change and of losing infrastructures that simply don't work! Everything is changing and Cov19 has certainly shown us that we can lose the rigid thought processes especially of being able to work from home instead of commuting and we can adapt brilliantly in so many other ways.

Yeah, lets all just hold hands and walk together into extinction amirite? This "solution" is invalid, why spend effort and energy trying to come up with ways to live in the worst case scenarios when that effort and energy would be FAR better spent trying too negate or prevent those worst case scenarios from happening - the feedback effects are already dictating we'll lose more land area, yes, but proposing a solution that only INCREASES our footprint is a bad idea in general - all this will do is more widely distribute microplastics in the ocean, cause other trash and debris while also proving a more normalised CO2 blanket - how is this productive? What about the marine life? This is the complete opposite of working with nature.
