Working with one hand and filming with the other....what a legend! I just stumbled upon your channel and now im a follower. Im buying an audi tt coupe 2004 this coming monday and im learning a lot from your videos.
Recently purchased a Mk1 TT. *Almost* every video on maintenance is made outside the US, as I don't see too many of these in the states. Your videos have been quite helpful. Many thanks from across the ocean!
My near side front spring broke literally in front of me whilst washing my car wheel yesterday, sounded like a gun going off ! Your video enabled me to fit a new spring today. Thanks 😊
Hello, on my quattro 225apx/1999, i have used bilstein B4 with eibach -25mm (E1570-140) and oem top mount (like your setup?). My front suspensions are higher than the rear. Did you have this problem too ?
Good video Bryn, thx!! I did back and front and strut spreader tool a must. To all, the drop link goes in a certain way. One thread is longer than the other if you look carefully. I didn’t. The longer thread goes up top on strut! Shorter thread on stabilizer bar. Key info that coulda saved me a few days and having to get another drop link as the thread strips if you put the shorter end up top and try tightening it thru.
Thanks for sharing this Bryn! I have to replace all shocks and springs on my 2004 3.2 roadster she has done 200000km. Replacing with stock shocks and springs, I am a bit of an old git now!
Hi good clear video better than the American Videos. Learn a lot. Big fan! I have a question. What is different about the rear suspension of a front-wheel drive Audi tt 1998. Would like to replace them.
Something about this i'm curious about. The locating tab that slots into the hub, on my new shocks, there is a small tab bent to 90 degrees at the bottom of it, same as the ones in the video. Is it intended to clamp on that tab or the body of the shock? I'm sure it should be the body, but in my case, the tab will clamp first.
hello; I am replacing my top mounts and bearings; hopefully my shocks are ok: on the car, they are very firm, and the car doesn't bounce when you press hard on the wing. I hope they are ok; thanks for your videos
This is so good detailed vid on earth I will swap the couple struts n 2 rear dampers that’s my poor old struts on TT has ended of the duty I had realized after front mount bushing replaced last weekend I appreciate n thank you I will do this job confidently right now 👍
great content really clear and concise makes doing the job for an average spanner handler. Would you recommend any particular suppliers for parts? thx really appreciate the content.
Great video. 100% get a hub separator or use a 3/8 to 1/4 socket adaptor to seprste the hub., Works exactly the same. I tried with the hammer and it was a fair bit harder
Hi mate just seen a few jobs that you have been doing. All brilliant in detail also. Now can you tell me which is the live wire to the reverse light as I am going to fit reverse sensors. Many thanks. Oh yeah and keep up the brilliant work.
Great video bro I bought everything struts springs ball joints wish bones poly bushes new bolts drop links but I can not get that strut punch bolt out what should I do please
I have 19inch rims on my 04 225 I want new suspension lowering it to flush with the tires little or no gap. But without getting adjustable coil overs how will I be able to adjust/make sure it will fit with my rim size?
What are the rubber caps on the top and bottom? Your suspension does not protrude from the top hole like mine does. Also, what is the rubber piece that is on the top hole?
Hey Bryn, I’ve found the suspension pinch bolt to be well and truly seized on my car. Any tips to get it out without rounding off the nut heads? Cheers
Hello, I changed my 4 shock absorbers with Bilstein b4. I have the original springs. I find the ride height far too high at the rear and even more at the rear. What could be causing this problem? Sports chassis? What option code for this chassis? Information, my rear stabilizer bar links are 175 mm. Thanks for your help.
Hello mate, great video I appreciate it! I noticed you used the same top bolt for the re-assembly of the rear shock, are they reuseable? I heard they were 1 use only stretch bolts?
Nice video, especially considering you're working outside, "in the rough", with a hand-held phone camera! So sad to see the amount of corrosion you have to endure over there (I'm in Oz) that makes the job so messy and difficult.
Brilliant videos and content. Delivery is really clear. Just a bit disappointed that on many I've watched, you don't use grease on reassembly, which is something that can make such a difference, not only to ease assembly, but to protect for the future disassembly. Definitely on bolts that are on suspension/hub areas. This doesn't distract from the usefulness of the videos, and it's a great channel, but I'd just like to see more best practice on this one point.
Copper grease gets way over used- and then bolts get incorrectly torqued as all settings are given dry, not lubed. Clean threads are the most important thing to ensure ease of future work
Great video. I've got a set of KW waiting to put on my quattro. I've also got a set of new spring seats for the rear, have you got any experience with swapping those? I've head the old ones can be a pain to remove?
Hi Bryn, great video. Could you point me in the direction of the socket tool for ‘spreading’ the strut housing. Also I’m looking to install bilstein b12 pro kit with eibach, onto a pre-facelift 2001, 225 Quattro, will this lower it by 40-45mm. Thanks.
Hi Bryn I’ve had a nightmare - two days wasted so far trying to do even just one side front strut and spring. My issue is I just can’t get the new strut fully in the hub! It’s like half a CM from being fully in and for two days now I just can’t get the damn strut in the hub!! When I use a Jack underneath the control arm it just pushes the spring up - doesn’t force the strut any further into the hub. And yes I’m using the strut spreader tool - I’m just at a dead end now. Any advise??
Maybe try the spreader tool in a different spot, like the top, and gentle tapping with 4lb hammer to coax it to drop in. Or lube/grease in hole first, then drop it in. Also make sure your angle is right. Me wasn’t, and when I moved it a bit, it dropped in.
Sweet video and excellent timing as I'm about to do something similar. When lowering a TT do you find that you need adjustable rear tie arms or bushes? I'm apparently at the limit of adjustment already and don't want to chew through rear tyres. I'll be dropping it 25mm. It is a 2006 however the Australian delivered cars didn't get the later sports suspension. Appreciate the advice. Cheers.
Just a FYI for others; the strut not goin up by it self is NOT an issue, and will NOT effect your ride quality. Is the gas that has escaped the strut over the years, but as long as there is NO oil leaking, the strut is 100% fine to reuse with lowering springs. This is well written in the OEM repair manual.
Help! Replaced the rear shocks with Bilsteins and they knock at low speed. Any ideas why it is doing this and how to fix. Local garage says they are not OEM so they will knock!!!!! It’s also lowered by 20mm with H&R springs. 20mm spacers and 18 inch QS alloys.
At the moment I use the Halfords 3/8 and 1/2 inch ones. They're not bad for the money. I'll be upgrading soon as I want digital ones, but for the budding home mechanic they're spot on
Hi if i was to lower my tt 2003 by 20mm as the stock springs are supposedly 20mm lower then pre facelift will i have to add adjustable tie rods. Any advice cheers.
All lowering springs for the mk1 are in reference to pre-facelift height, so would be classed as 40mm lowered, and could need adjustable tie bars to get the alignment spot on, but it’s not always necessary
managed to do my shocks and springs, front and back with just this video…!! awesome

Hey I enjoyed this video. Keep us posted with new tasks, perhaps bushings on this particular TT ?
This TT doesn't need bushes doing at present, but I have got a video on installing cookbot bushes into wishbones
Hello mate, great video I appreciate it! I noticed you used the same top bolt for the re-assembly of the rear shock, are they reuseable? I heard they were 1 use only stretch bolts?
You’re right, They’re one use. Not reusable. Same on the front hub pinch bolt+nut, wishbone nut and strut mount nuts x2

@@BWSTT ace, that's well worth jnowing., appreciate the insight and great videos.

What special bolt is that on top of the strut?

I find that after 40mm on pre-facelift height is the limit for standard tie arms, so you should be ok at 25mm lowering

I cant see how i can help without seeing the car to be honest. If they are the correct shocks they are either faulty or lose.
I noticed you don’t replace the bolts. It says to do so in the Bentley service manual. Is there a reason why you don’t?
