It’s really nice to see a Great British culture still thriving in a lovely Lancashire town...The Northern people are really friendly and look so happy....just being English 🏴..👍🏻
Thank you once again for a wonderful tour, you are just brilliant at what you do. I NEED to go to Bury Market now. Thank you you are amazing, you always make me feel like I am there.
While a lot of people are posting run down towns it’s refreshing to see Bury doing so well. The market seems great and the rest of the town that you showed looks clean and tidy. Thanks for posting this👍
The answer to the question about loved ones going to war... NO ! Simply because what's happened to this once great country. These old industrial towns you visit highlight what we were all about back in the day. How things have changed, and its not for the better. Just my opion of course. Another great vlog, James. Bury Market on my must visit list, pies, and black pudding ! ...and I'm a South Londoner!
Lived on Bell Lane in Bury before moving over to Ireland 23 years ago the market used to be brilliant.. the locals were brilliant met my wife working on the door on Ronnie's on the Rock round the corner.. brought back some memories.. my sister lives in Ramsbottom she had a stall there was very successful. Jogged some great memories..
Pity we couldn;t see your bank balance! Bury Council have done a wonderful job maintaining a thriving town centre when many other towns are in decline. For an example of a council doing a bad job look at the state of Bolton town centre 6 miles away. The difference between those two town centres is Bury Council discouraged out of town retail shopping whereas Bolton council encouraged it.
Another great vlog James....my wife and I are both from Bury before we moved to North Wales 22 years ago, still go back to the market every two months when we visit and yes I'd say its best in the UK, you only have to look at the coaches on market days.
What a great market and town that was, really enjoyed this vlog mate. Sometimes when Helens not in it, because she has to work, I feel theres something missing (which is the Helebobs obviously), nothing you can do about it, BUT this vlog, because you were running solo, had soo much more content in it, I’d give it a 10/10 👍🏻
She would be reading all the signs 😆. By the way james what was the name of that bar in benidorm you and Helen have them garlic prawns As me and the Mrs are going next week buddy.
Bury is in Pretty good shape and the Market really helps it. Shame about the Railway museum not being open. The East Lancs Railway line might interest you. It goes over to Heywood in one direction and upto Rammy and Rawtenstall in the other. The Greek Deli Katsouris is worth a look, they've just moved it from the indoor market to opposite their cafe.
Nice one James I was one of the people who recommended Bury Market , Born and bred there and left in 2006 to live in the Highlands of Scotland . It was great seeing how some things have changed and other things are still the same on your walkbout . It's a good night out Fri / Sat you've got to take Helen she would love some of the pubs .....only suprise is you didn't call in Wetherspoons on the way to the town hall !
PS James you were stood by the hot potato van talking to that nice couple. You missed a treat, new potatoes with butter and salt. They are wonderful, we always get them, loved them for 40 years or more and never seen them anywhere else. Anyone visiting you MUST try , you won't be disappointed. 😋😋😋
he definitely needs to try in this order 1/ hot potatoes and black peas 2/ a Lancashire oven bottom muffin 3/ a cooked black pudding with piccalilli ....... all staples of bury market. 4 / the syrian stall that sells schwarma is amazing
What a crackin market, Bury is brilliant. Here in Birkenhead we once had a fantastic market, died a death & is really struggling now soon to be relocated. But our Birkenhead Town Hall is a fabulous building & Hamilton Square where it’s located has lots of Georgian architecture. Very good vlog. ❤
Fantastic to see a market thriving like this. Top produce round every corner. Definitely gonna have a day out shopping at the market sometime soon. Cheers James, glad you showed us around.
I went last year with my friend we travelled from North Wales on the coach when we had enough of the market we went to have a look around Bury and ended up in the Two Tubs pub which I was hoping you would go into for a drink its really old and quaint inside. Thanks for the memories.
Thankyou for taking us to Bury Market! I'm now planning a little cheeky trip there with my friend. The produce looked amazing and good variety of stalls too. Thanks again x
My mother travels from old trafford to bury market every friday for last 15 years :) And the chuckle Brothers (Neville's) who played for Man Utd lived there
Bury should be proud as punch! Well maintained town a thriving retail industry. There should be a study taken why they have gotten everything right, then passed on to other ailing towns. That 'Town Hall'! There must be history, ie the original got burned down/bombed. They certainly would not pause a 100 yrs or so to build that monstosity! Fantastic vlog mate. Bury is going to be happy with you with the amount of people now wanting to visit! Win, Win, Win.
James, love bury mate, i use to bring my son up there for sparing, we would go to the peoples gym, great bunch of lands, always treated us very well, have a good evening my friend and thanks for the content, God bless.
What a wonderful film James! I love it when you go around these towns showing us the sights. Love all those people and the conversations you had with them. Well done!
Dave That first couple was lovely. That really was a propper market. Buskers was really good trumpet fellas cheeks like a balloon. Seen eccles cakes my mum called them fly cakes cos of all raisins inside.
it does look like a great market, everything looked so fresh,i would definitely put on so much weight if i became a regular shopper there, especially the tasty pies looked delicious, the people of bury are very lucky to live in such a nice place with lots of character, even the young men outside the church were friendly lol, Helen would have loved that place, thanks for showing us around
Watching from Australia been here 54 years but still miss pork pies an black pudding bury market looks fabulous we were from Eccles not far great blog makes us hungry
James, what a lovely crowd of friendly people you met on this market trip. Those stall holders are a real credit to Bury. Birkenhead used to have a famous old market until the original ( post-war) one built down early 1970s. There was a famous stall holder named Eli and people , some not even looking to purchase anything, would just stand and listen to his patter as he sold all sorts of goods. It’s said that the famous Liverpool comedian ,Ken Dodd, would often be seen standing and listening to him and then use some of Eli’s patter in his act. “ Where’s me shirt?” , was one of Eli’s quips as he rummaged through boxes of goods , looking for some flashy shirts that he was looking to sell at a bargain knock down price! Ken Dodd a few years later had a hit single with a song of that name😀
I briefly remember the 'old market' by the Bhead Tunnel entrance as a child, being dragged round by me mum. The 'new' market used to be just as popular, & like Bury, coaches would bring people from all over, especially N Wales. Today it is almost mt of stalls. The Council is planning to move it to an old Argos store, a tiny fraction of it's original size. What an absolute shame!
@@AnthonyValentine-vm1yc Anthony,, used to live just down the road from the old Birkenhead market before we moved to The Ponderosa ( Woodchurch Estate) . I remember when l was a nipper buying my first ever vinyl record in the market . It was one of those shellac 78s . Cliff Richard and The Shadows ‘ Move lt’. I still think it’s a great single. The aroma coming from of those chickens , roasting on spits as well.. . You could buy a hot chicken batch with stuffing.
Really enjoyed your blog. I left Bury 18 years ago to Liverpool. Just reminds me of how good that town centre is. But nothing beats the pubs down here in Liverpool town lol. It's a shame you didn't get to the East Lancs steam railway, with the Trackside pub. Superb video, so entertaining for us that have emigrated.
What a fantastic Vlog we live about half an hour from Bury but haven't Been to Bury or the market for years it is now definitely on the list and definitely on a more regular basis. That market looks superb
Really good vlog James of a place I've always liked to think of as my "second home town" ... My mum was born and bred in the town & met my dad when he was stationed at Bury barracks on Bolton Road (some of the buildings are still there and used as a bar / restaurant called "The Barracks" I think) He was an only child and hailed from Newhaven in Sussex, but my mum was one of four siblings and they set up home together in Essex in the 50s to get work in London after the war. I remember we ALWAYS spent the school holidays in the 60s & 70s visiting my grandma who lived opposite the barracks and staying with various numerous relatives in the town until she died in 1977. I think my mum was distantly related to Violet Carson who played Ena Sharples in Coronation Street but I am definetly related to Gary & Phil Neville (and Tracey!) whose grandmother was my mum's cousin. I've still managed to go back to Bury every two-three years since, the last time being two years ago when I finally ticked off a bucket list tiem and ate black pudding on Bury Market ! I often buy packs of "Bury Black Pudding" (the corporate owners of the stall where you bought some) at Asda to have with a cooked breakfas,t but to eat it cooked fresh on the market you would have needed to go to Chadwicks just around the corner - TBH it wan't as 'nice' as what I am used to and left an after taste, but it had to be done !! ... When I introduced my partner to the town the day after mum's funeral in 2016 she got inside the Parish Church and said it was good (she does churches & cathedrals like I do football grounds !) and though you went in the Fusilier Museum, I am not sure if you went in the Art Gallery / Bury Museum opposite which you identified as a grand old building, which used to house the library in the 70s where I begged my dad to let me go in and borrow football books to read in the boring moments whilst staying with elderly relatives ! My mum did indeed work in a cotton mill when young just before WWII, but I am not sure what my dad did in the army, he certainly didn't go abroad and fight, I never knew why not , he died in 1995 ... Obviously we always went to Bury Market but 40+ years ago the famous shopping street before the town centre was modernized was The Rock which leads away from the Peek statue. In recent years that part of the town has been completely revamped and makes the adjoining indoor Millgate Centre (where I always park too!) look a little insignificant. The famous fish n chip shop just across the ring road from the market was Thomsons, but it got demolished in the revamp however they re-housed them in a small unit in amongst The New Rock and the food there is still very tasty ! ... The centre of the town where the monument to John Kay stands is known as Kay Gardens and buses used to line up all round the square to take you to all areas around the town, in the late 70s the Bury Metro Link was created to give the buses a proper station, with the railway line from Manchester Victorria diverted slightly from Bolton Street Station, where the tarnsport museum & heritage railway are now. These days the Metro Link is served by trams from the City instead of trains, using the old route but my next visit will hoipefulyl be later this summer to ride the steam train through Bury on the East Lancashire Line from Heywood to Rawtenstall (I still have a relative alive in Ramsbottom !) and I also want to see Bury FC play again now they are back at Gogg Lane where I watched some of my first football matches as a young lad ... So many memories, thank you for getting so much of the old place on You Tube ... Great job mate !
Bartons Piccalilli, famous St Helens picklers! You should go down to St Helens if you like your rough northern towns. Cricketers Arms & Turks Head two of the best traditional cask beer pubs in the country, you'd enjoy it
I must agree with the comments and say "Yes, now *THAT'S* a really great market, not seen in a very long time" The strawberries ‼️‼️ the butchers ‼️‼️ and that Cheese stall ‼️‼️ All of it was a great delight to see - wish I were there 💯💯👍👍✔️✔️😄😄
Thanks for a lovely day out James, fantastic market, fantastic fruit and veg..and you found me a Rum Ball that's what we called them in the 70's, because there were 5 kids in our family we could only have half each, I wonder if they taste the same ? Always a favourite of mine .. Those young lads were very polite !!!
Fabulous video, thoroughly enjoyed looking round the market with you. Some fabulous bargains to be had. The museum looked so interestingly. I think I'm going to add this to my ever growing list of interesting of places to visit. I bet Helen was gutted not to be with you.
Great video thanks, that’s it bury market is on my list of places to go to, it’s great to see a thriving market and community, nothing like that where we live in Huddersfield
Wow James what a treat, reminds us of the old days down in the Sheffield castle market...we loved it down there..also Doncaster...we haven't been for a while, but all this is ticking our taste buds... Brilliant mate, loved every second of it 👍✅👍✅👍✅💓💞
Hi Jim glad you had a good time in bury and sampling the food ...very much appreciated for replying and Jim what was the diet coke all about 😂😂.....regards dave
Aw man! I’ve thought about suggesting Bury but didn’t think there was much else here. Looking forward to watching it. Shame I didn’t bump into you so I could gloat about last nights result 😂😂😂
Love Bury market. We go shopping on Saturdays and you can hardly move. So glad it is back to normal now. It was quite surreal when we went during lockdown and there were just a few food stalls open and hardly anybody there.
Bury's a great town, I live in next town and always go there. There's another newer shopping area across from where you parked and if you'd walked to the steam train station you could have had a craft beer at the bar on the platform, if open . 😊
Loved this video, especially the way you interacted with many locals. Made it so interesting and more lovely! Just seemed different that your other solo ones, which were good too, but this was on a different level..😊
Great vlog. What day did ya go to the market ?Love mi markets but only on days its quietish. Some of the fresh produce was cheap. Chorley and Eccles cakes are my favourite over in Lancashire.Keep giving us great vids but not too good that mainstream television snap ya up.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thats a great walk round what a lovely place . That market looks a bit of allright, James.......I agree with others had Helen been with you you'd still be only half way round👍👍
Im a manc from hulme .Ive lived in bury 17 years .Its a great market .Ive worked on the bacon stall many years ago.The sausages stall on the outside market are the best you will taste ,so mamy different ones my fav is the black pud sausage .
Great vlog and you didn't put yourself down once!! One vlog you did i had eaten my 3 meals of the day but you made me so jealous I just had to order a piece of cod delivered to the house ha!! The only Bury I know is Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk where my Disney father in law ended up You might like to check out Suffolk but in the meantime that market today was so lush I want a pork pie with picallilli on the side!! Diet starts tomorrow again lol 😂😂😂
Amazing video again James Tartarian structures everywhere, did you notice how many steps up to church then more steps up to Entrance's to hide the True level's plus Why did the monument have step's up to it and it looked like I would be a lot Taller so much hidden history 😉❤😊
Fair play to Bury, cracking market, growing up as a kid we used to go into Burnley market, you'd get a tray of black pudding swimming in vinegar or my favourite was curried mince and chips, I no longer live there now, I live near Maryport (good place for you to go next) but last time I went to Burnley market it was sadly nearly empty, sad times.
That was a great video. 👍 Havn't been to Bury for years. The market still looks fab, even better now by the looks of it. What a fantastic market, love all the little food stalls and all the fruit and veg. We dont really have a market anymore in Lancaster, used to have a lovely market hall then they closed it down & demolished it and now there's a Primark there.😮 We still have an outdoor market on a Wednesday & Saturday but its only small. Really enjoyed this its made me want to go visit Bury again. Thanks James.. 👍😉
I don't usually like markets but that one seems exceptional. I've just discovered Redcliffe Farm Shop near Scarborough so now I don't need to go to supermarkets for snap.
One of the few Northern towns which is well worth the visit. The whole town works so well, road system is good and tram to Mancs available . I’m from Preston and it’s a disaster, so badly run with zero proper planning.
On a serious note... Ive never seen such a fantastic market where they sell so much and really extraordinary good prices, that fruit and veg produce absolutely brill. As you say those raspberries and strawberries top notch. That place is definitely on my todo list now, those pork pies too, fantastic flavours. Thanks so much for showing us.
Fred Dibna once was filmed placing the weather vane on the top of Bury Parish church. Great vlogg. I live in bury. The fella that made the Peel monument created Nelson on Nelson’s column.
From a lad from London…
This is sooo refreshing old England 🏴 still exists 👊🏻
Aye, Tony. Alas, my local market, in Bradford, is dying on it's feet, just now.

It’s really nice to see a Great British culture still thriving in a lovely Lancashire town...The Northern people are really friendly and look so happy....just being English 🏴..👍🏻
I have never been to Bury but it's great to know that some market towns are still thriving in these hard times.

It’s been my hometown for the last 25 years, I’m glad you liked it!
Made me quite proud 👍

It was a great recommendation. Thank you 😊
sadly the nightlife isnt what it once was. would recommend them to visit the trackside though. very much their kind of pub
just proved what the fruit and veg from the supermarkets we have to put up with and the inflated prices
Buy fresh buy local...
PS James you were stood by the hot potato van talking to that nice couple. You missed a treat, new potatoes with butter and salt. They are wonderful, we always get them, loved them for 40 years or more and never seen them anywhere else. Anyone visiting you MUST try , you won't be disappointed. 😋😋😋

Hi James so loved this vlog thankyou for all that you do, we love your channel you and Helen are like part of the family just such lovely people 😊❤
James, that was a cracking video. I’ve just watched at the market. You made an excellent job of that. Keep up the good work.
James, I watched this on my TV, as it ended it occurred to me I enjoyed it as much as any 40 minute TV show, well done mate 👌.
I left Bury over 50yrs ago for 'Down South' no regrets...however.....boy do I miss that Market...Its always been famous.

Great vlog .... the people of Bury are lovely 👍💚
Nice to a great busy market and town. Everywhere looked very clean as well😊
What a lovely market great show 👌
I have been binging on you videos this week Top notch and great adventures
Would love to see you guys in Edinburgh I am sure you will love it
Thank you, I might be there soon 😊
@@bythecurb Look forward to it 👍
What a lovely, lively place. A very upbeat video. Bet Helen would have loved it too.
Great video thanks, that’s it bury market is on my list of places to go to, it’s great to see a thriving market and community, nothing like that where we live in Huddersfield
People are so friendly. Its really nice to see.
I'm from Bury and have fond memories of the market. I'm gonna go back. Thanks for the video
PLEASE REMEMBER EVERYONE THAT BURY MARKET IS ONLY OPEN ON WEDNESDAY.....FRIDAY....AND SATURDAY, ITS A BRILLIANT MARKET!!!
Thankyou 😊
Hi there mate there is a town on the south Coast of Australia called Berry to mate
My body is a temple 😂
Aw man! I’ve thought about suggesting Bury but didn’t think there was much else here. Looking forward to watching it. Shame I didn’t bump into you so I could gloat about last nights result 😂😂😂
Gloat away, Im a Sheffield Wednesday fan!! 😂
Damn it haha
Great market. Love going there for fresh black puddings
@@bythecurbthey’re your second team 😂😂😂
The indoor market is currently closed due to refurbishment and there is also “the rock” shopping centre area, across the road from the market.
Yes that definitely looks like a great market, and full of interesting people. Thanks James.
I'm going to Bury market now again after this vid. Top video .
I lived in Bury for 6 years. Brought back a lot of memories 😊
Loved this video, especially the way you interacted with many locals. Made it so interesting and more lovely!
Just seemed different that your other solo ones, which were good too, but this was on a different level..😊
Great Vlog James. I worked on Lord Street Bury 45 years ago. Brilliant market. Cheers.
Great vlog. What day did ya go to the market ?Love mi markets but only on days its quietish. Some of the fresh produce was cheap. Chorley and Eccles cakes are my favourite over in Lancashire.Keep giving us great vids but not too good that mainstream television snap ya up.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow! Great video, well done, James
Pork pie and black pudding that’s me on Bury Market . Helen would of loved the Charity shops lol great place Bury or Berry depending how you say it 👍
Thats a great walk round what a lovely place .
Never been to Bury market. Might pop up and take a look.
It's great, I recommend it
@@bythecurb Oh yeah, go to Plume Of Feathers - Barlaston. Its owned by Neil Morrissey and it's a cracking good place for food.
Great vlog and you didn't put yourself down once!!
One vlog you did i had eaten my 3 meals of the day but you made me so jealous I just had to order a piece of cod delivered to the house ha!!
The only Bury I know is Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk where my Disney father in law ended up
You might like to check out Suffolk but in the meantime that market today was so lush I want a pork pie with picallilli on the side!!
I live in Barnsley as well. I love going on a day trip ( run by a local travel agent) to Bury Market. It’s a Cracking day out.
'Hot dog, pile everything on - oh, and a coke, must be diet though!' Diet starts tomorrow 🤣
I was a bit disturbed by the LIVE crab story. Crustaceans are boiled alive, bloody barbaric. Shame that, and should be a crime.
He looked a right stupid twat when he said that, MrB.
My god that market was unbelievable thank you for another great video absolutely brilliant 👏
Thank you 😊
oh so you are allowed to go shopping but poor Hellen gets moaned at when she goes 🤣great video
If Helen was with James he would have only got round a tenth of this vlog if that! 😉😂
Well done James 👍 you are a brilliant vlogger and even more confident in every video 😊....now I got to get my old man to take me to Bury Market 😂😉
Thank you Kim
Aye...so glad you liked Bury market...it's a really great place isn't it? Great food, great atmosphere, great produce, great people.
I agree with you. Yorkshire people are so friendly. Salt of the earth
Proper market that is. Thanks for the visit. 👍+1
Such a good vlog! We’re watching from Bury! You need to come back with Helen and visit the new part of the town which you missed this time.
