Welcome to my Channel,
My name is James and I live full time in my tiny van, however this is not just a van life channel. I enjoy travel, food and drink and making videos 🙂
When I turned 50 I decided I’d had enough of the rat race and working long hours just to pay rent and bills, life was passing me by and I needed a drastic change.
FAQ
Where is Helen?
Helen has a responsible full time job and two children so unfortunately she can’t join me on every trip. I really wish she could.
What equipment do you use?
My vlogging camera is a GoPro Hero 9 but I also use my pixel 6a phone and Lumix G80 camera for other footage
For editing, I used Premiere Pro on an old laptop but I’m saving to buy a more powerful computer.
Do you have children?
Yes I have a 6yr old daughter who lives with her mum but I see her quite a lot. I don’t usually put her on the vlogs and if I do, I block out her face for privacy reasons. I also have a grown up son.
How do you fund your lifestyle?
I don’t need as much to live these days since going full time van life but I receive a small percentage of income from the ads that TH-cam put on the videos.
Why the sponsored videos?
I only accept sponsorship from companies I use and trust, this is my fulltime job and my income, it’s how I support my family. (I have Patreon if you prefer videos with no ads).
How do I contact you?
Please contact me here: james@bythecurb.co.uk
One of the best 30 odd minutes I've ever watched on TH-cam. You two gorgeous people are wonderful, I'm sure some TV talent scout is on your tail but don't ever change.
Thank you 😊❤️
You should go to Knaresborough its gorgeous there.Loving your channel.
Your editing skills are outstanding. The inserted clips and music choices are perfect for the situations. A mixture of serenity, historical information, factual details with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.
It's yet another outstanding video.
Thank you mate, that means a lot 😊
Very true,👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you so much for showing the Feathers innLudlow. I stayed there for a couple of nights when expecting my Son who has just turned 52. We were visiting friends in the area. We enjoyed the stay but I was a bit apprehensive after being told it was haunted but I never experienced anything weird, .it is no good vouching for the food as I think the chef will have moved on. I love how you keep bringing back these memories. I am waiting for you to get to Hay on Wye. If you visit the Baskerville Hall Hotel I believe they now have a site for campers etc. possibly with access to the indoor pool.
I live in Ludlow by the river just minutes from the castle.
Am enviious! x
@@dellyboot2703 you wouldn't be when the river is in flood!
Would you recommend it as a place to live retire too??
Your content keeps getting better and better. I've really enjoyed these last 2 videos.
Your editing, inclusion of captions and information along with music is a credit to you.
Thank you 😊❤️
That was one hell of a squeaky door on the last pub, James's New fav pub taking over from the last pub. lol. very bueatiful building all around Ludlow , Martyn was a character and new the area very well. Nice new old coat Helen, looked very smart indeed. Was very enjoyable and entertaining from start to finish.
If you and Helen opened a parlour pub your subscribers would pack it out every time you chose to put the lamp on. Seriously you and Helen would make a cracking landlord/landlady, bloody hard work though. That last Parlour pub had the squeakiest door Ive ever heard, I originally thought you were overdubbing it with a carry on screaming sound clip 😂
I loved the squeeky door. Really added to the ambience
100% agree.x
@@bythecurb Ah, so that was deliberate! Oh, I thought it was just a random door squeaking in the background :-)
Katherine of Aragon and her first husband Prince Arthur Tudor lived at Ludlow Castle where he died from the sweating sickness. Thus his brother Henry became heir to the throne.
Well done guys. Really enjoyed our tour of Ludlow. One day I'll have to visit.
Such a change to find videos on TH-cam presented in a natural and relaxed manner.
Mind you the Yorkshire humour helps. Keep it up guys.
PS. Know what you mean about the shoes. I had a pair with holes in heals and when I walked they sounded like ducks quacking. Mind you I never went short of bread.
Hi Chaps.
Going to show my age on this comment😮
During my Letterpress Printing apprenticeship I was taught how to use the monotone Ludlow typesetting machine. It comprised of more independent parts all of which moved that was the most challenging process I've ever seen. I was told it was manufactured in Ludlow and it now makes a lot of sense when you pointed out the Readers room.
A reader used to be a full time job proofing the formes and of course reading and checking for mistakes.
Allegedly I was one of the last apprentices taught to use this machine in UK before interrupting my apprenticeship by the NGA union to retrain in modern technology of Lithography.
Anyway your video stirred memories of times gone by.
Many thanks and I'm not surprised that there as many pubs in Ludlow as the machines would drive a sane man to drink.
Great video guys and all the best from Australia.
Thank you for the info. Very interesting 😊
Great video. Have an Airbnb Ludlow reservation in September. Visiting from Texas. Thank you
We also absolutely love ludlow......its like a mini chester......some great pubs....we used to stay down by river but height barrier now....keep the vids coming....we love them....
Thank you 😊❤️
Well that looks like a nifty little place that I've never given a second thought to until now.
great vlog, bought back memories as a racing lad in the 60`s, loved Ludlow racecourse, the pub sign outside the little pub you visited called The Blood Bay depicts the 1932 Grand National winner ` Forbra` @ 50/1,,,,,owned by the then local Mayor William Parsonage,
Watched all your videos, never ever commented on any of them, but after watching this one i just have to .. Absolutely brilliant !!! Thank you .
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 😊
@@bythecurb frum tarn .🙂
Thanks for this video. We have a campervan, and Ludlow is now very much on the list of places to visit 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Just followed your trip of Ludlow this weekend, a great place to visit for a few beers and culture. Now back at home in Morecambe ( which you slated a bit) but you definitely visited the wrong places in town. Keep going, we are enjoying your stuff!
A great advert for Ludlow. A beautiful place even when the skies are grey.
One of your best vlogs for the unusual and we will deffo be visiting Ludlo so thanks guys, don't know if you know this but in parts of southern Ireland parlour pubs are a thing and some are a complete day out in a pub there is one in Shannon Harbour in Co Offaly called Mcintyers is a Pub ,, fishing tackle ,corner shop, post office cafe, they actually sold funeral shrouds😂😂 and in the parlour the kids were waching tv and didn't butt an eye lid at you being there ,I was there visiting my wife's family who live near by later that night it was jars out with live Irish music and all the mucisions were locals WOW,it blew my mind and such a beautiful place and people ,but the parlour pub happend because of the distances between pubs could be miles ❤
That sounds amazing. We really need to visit
You need to come back to Ludlow and buy some Ludlow sausages at Walls (next to the Blood Bay). If you'd have carried on right down the road from the Angel and gone under the Broadgate you'd have come to The Wheatsheaf pub, which is a great pub. Also you missed a visit to the Ludlow Brewery!! Can't rate the Angel highly enough. Fantastic food and a great setting.
Ludlow really is glorious. I've been a few times and each time I discover new things. ❤
Lol - you had just said your shoes are squeaking when (I think, anyway) a door opened and squeaked, so it sounded like you were demonstrating with your shoe! UPDATE: someone below said that was deliberately put in by you
Helen sounds like me, with reading guidebooks, etc. I love visiting castles, stately homes, churches, etc. anything with a bit of history
They really were very squeeky 😂
Hi guys. After watching the Shrewsbury vlog myself and my partner Julie were hoping you would come down to Ludlow. We are both (Ludlovians) born and bred. We have seen so many changes throughout the years. We think there were about 23 pubs in the 70's and 80's and the town was alive but sadly one by one we have seen them close.
Thanks for all your great vlogs, we appreciate you covering our lovely Ludlow.
Thank you. We loved Ludlow
Good news to me pubs/ bars closing.
Great video love Ludlow have worked there Dinham weir cafe next to the river you can see the salmon leaping there in September very picturesque 👍🛵
I want to live in Ludlow as well!!! ❤
It’s called an Oriel window! I fit windows for a living but I didn’t know so I looked it up. Rock n Roll. 😅
Thank you for that
Used to be a sweet shop
Hi both what a great video. We love Ludow lots of great pubs. We used to park behind the castle by the river until a barrier went up but after seeing where you stayed we may give it another try. Looking forward to your next vid..
Very impressive indeed just has it should be ludlow left alone wonderful what smashing places too absolutely a winner 😎👍
haha the cat! 'oh you naughty boy'!
Hi to you both , did you not know about The Feather's Hotel and how haunted it is? Most of Ludlow has ghosts, the castle and most of the pubs . The feathers Hotel is extremely renowned for ghosts! Great video, as always , enjoyed watching you on you're travels
I like Ludlow, My Dad hails from near Shrewsbury
Visited many years ago beautiful place and joules ales originally are from stone in Staffordshire my home town nice blog guys ❤
Hey Chaps...you should have come up to Bishops Castle for the oldest working brewery in the UK 1642 and more...

Looks lovely and hoise prices are reasonable.
Wonderful Easter video, superb content, editing , and easy evening viewing, thank you. ❤ 🎉
Thank you 😊❤️
“ Wow”that brought back some memories. Stayed in the feathers many years ago. I think the knight had a polish. A few new chairs. Loved it
loving your videos, well made, well presented, keep em coming !!
Ludlow, a lovely part of the Country, used to visit when in Sales and lived in Cheltenham, I used to think,i'd love to live there as well.
...... PS and the Belgian beer is very special too
Glad you are visiting the towns on the English - Welsh border. There are quite a few really nice ones and they don't get overcrowded with tourists. The whole area is well worth exploring.
Thought Ludlow was famous for horse racing but what a beautiful town it is ,with lots of history and sights.Brilliant video from TH-cams dynamic duo.Now down for a certain visit, thanks guys.
Thank you 😊❤️
You can't take the girl out the pub eh mand, l just stumbled onto this as soon as l saw Ludlow l knew you had to be in there somewhere.xx

See you in gods county Shropshire again love it originally from Newport Shropshire. Video spot on Son
You ought to visit Chester. There are alot of black and white timbered buildings plus the roman wall to walk around. Its lovely and I live 15 miles from Chester.
We've been and we love Chester 😍 went at Christmas 🎄
I spent many happy days, night 🍺 in Ludlow. Good race course. BUT can be very very ruff
Well done you 2 beauties, your subs are creeping up soon 45,000.
Thank you ❤️😊
This is now my favourite youtube channel. And its just a couple of people having a pint or three. You've found your niche.
Thank you :-)
Best pub, looked like they had no real ale on tap?
Purchased clogau gold at Lloyd’s jewellery on the way to Llandrindod wells, elan Dams around there are beautiful
Love Ludlow, as soon as I stated tge vlog I was hoping you would find 'The Blood Bay' one of my favourite pubs, gutted we never found the other secret place, an then excuse I believe to re-visit soon!
Absolutely! 😊🍻
I grew up just over The county line in Worcestershire Ludlow was a trip out on a special occasion for us. I remember playing on the Russian guns outside the castle, their trophies of the Crimean war and one day when we went to the swimming baths which were shut and swim in the river, instead magic, a brilliant time😊
Another great video. Love Ludlow the castle is interesting as well.
We loved Ludlow, we climbed up the church tower , fantastic view over the town . We had an amazing pub meal too !
Looks like my type of England. Herefordshire and Shropshire are great.
THE BEST PUB, is real PUBLIC HOUSE. A house that the public can go in.
Ludlow looks a fantastic town. I do love how you get giddy with excitement over the architecture. It’s brilliant. The buildings are beautiful. But those two pubs were AMAZING! 😮😍 Loved them. So atmospheric.
The two best pubs ever!! 🙂
Hiya to u both. We been going there for years.parking can be a pain as it gets packed there in summer as they have shows on
Looks fabulous another place on our list ❤
That was great to watch. 👍 what an amazing place Ludlow is. Those old pubs were fantastic. Such character. I live in Lancaster which is a very old city but a lot of the old buildings have gone now, or been refurbished and even a lot of the old pubs have now been changed into student accommodation. 😧 Lancaster Castle is definitely worth a look around, they do guided tours and you can go into the old cells, and there's a lovely cafe been built inside the Castle grounds. I just love you guys & your videos and so look forward to the next ones. 😊 your videos just keep getting better & better. I know you nearly came to Lancaster, I saw your Morcambe video. 👍 Let us know if your planning on coming back to Lancaster I'll meet you guys for a pint. 😆🍺🍻 xx
Thank you Lisa, we will definitely give Lancaster another go 😊
@@bythecurb that's great. Let's hope the sun is shining next time you visit. 😁🌞 There's still a few old pubs left in Lancaster. One called Merchants 1688 which was a 17th century wine cellar with beer garden. And there's a 15th century pub called The White Lion, which is said that The Pendle Witches had their last drink in before taken to the gallows. 😮 There's a plaque outside with all the names on. And then there's The 3 Mariners Pub which is meant to be the oldest pub in Lancaster, a 15th century Grade 2 listed pub, its very nice & that too has a lovely beer garden it's on the Quay in Lancaster. 😁🍺👍
I go to Ludlow every year. It's a beautiful town.
I am enjoying your adventures. If you're really into architecture I recommend Bruges in Belgium. It's a medieval town/city and
quite amazing.
Love Bruges, I went a few years ago on a Brewery tour, think it was 'Zot' brewery
Great vlog.Even the door on wayout of The dog hangs well ,Creaked aloud like a creepy movie 😊
luv this couple...funny as f***
Watched your videos since your Liverpool visit (our home city). Watched many since, you's two have something special. All the best
Thank you ❤️😊
Yes I’ve heard it’s lovely and certainly looks gorgeous from your vlog …btw Helen love yr hat really suits you x
Love the video! My niece actually lives on that street where you both want to live. You would LOVE her house. Three storey town house and it’s like a tardis. We went to visit and had the best time in Ludlow. There’s a great pub over a small bridge near her house which is also ancient and great views across the water.😊
Wow. Sounds amazing 😊
Great video! I lived in Ludlow in the town centre & loved it, very friendly locals & surrounded by history at every turn
if you make it down south!come to oxford,i could help you around.but i only have my fav. pub .
Literally missed you guys by 1 day . Was there for 3 days last week , stayed at kin kitchen on old street . Fabulous place , bloody awful weather.Hoping to get back later this year when it’s drier . Great video as usual , Shropshire such a lovely area generally. Love it
What a beautiful town, so many wonderful old buildings & pubs - I am going to have to look up and see if they have a hafl-decent football team to watch and pay a visit myself one day ! 😉Superb video too, right up there with your very best, keep 'em coming, you two never disappoint ...
I think I saw the actual point when you were talking to Martyn, that Helen fell asleep standing up!
Lovely interesting place, glad you decided on here over Benidorm. Thanks again
Hi, thrilled you made it to gorgeous Ludlow. 🥰. We stayed there a week and never discovered the secret old pubs, will have to return. Thinking you and Helen have reached the age where varifocals are essential, you won't know how you managed without them. 🤓
Hiya guys love ludlow. Did you go down the hill to the pub by the bridge. X
No unfortunately they didn't what a gem that it tucked just around the corner ,👍🏻😊
These places you guys visiting give me great ideas to visit.Thankyou. And I love your red jacket you brought. Janet Kelly.
Ludlow looks great, and you presented it in such a good way that I’m going to take my Yorkshire lass there. keep the the vlogs coming. stay well.❤❤ best wishes.
Have a great time 😊
Tres enjoyable mes amis. I used to live in Ludlow, and although it's changed very little, my memory of it has for sure. Lovely video and the photons are as sharp as a pin!
Another lovely video, this time about a town I don't know at all. Really interesting. Just running through ideas for a Van Parlour Pub. Helen's really found her LOOK with that coat and hat combo. Looks fab.
This video and the last vid as well were really interesting. Ludlow looks fabulous and the two last pubs were magnificent.
Hi guys really great vlog. Another place I have to visit. Thanks for all your hard work, thanks. Peace 🧚
This maybe your best Vlog yet James and it was a pleasure to watch it and still be alive after seeing the damned painting in your last Vlog. That street with the posh houses was just wow and the food looked fabulous. That pub is just a real treat, like going back in time, you can smell the history coming through the screen.
If you love Ludlow, watch the old series Blott On The Landscape. A beautiful town not ret neutered by pedestrianization or Disneyfication. If you’re in the area , Stokesay Castle and Church Stretton.
Beautiful is Ludlow , never went in castle , ha ha when I was a young one my mum use to put cardboard in bottom till she had money after gas meter had been empty ha ha it's true , because my shoes soon had hole in I was a tomboy, so she said right your having boys shoes , I said I'm not having them , so when chap went to get my size she hit me on shin with shoe , ha ha , buy some wellies ha ha , memories I've been all where you've walked round , thanks for vlog, 👍👏👊xx
We love following your adventures and have tried taking your lead and stopped in some places we wouldn't have previously chosen. We're off to Barnsley on Monday for 4 days (the van is having it's habitation check) and wondered if you could suggest a couple of places to visit as we don't know the area at all. We're staying in Denby Dale. Don't worry if you're busy, keep up the great content. Ta ta!!
Depends what you like the food hall inside the market is really good and has a bar too. For pubs try the old number 7 and spiral city. If you want to go a few miles away have a look at Elsecar heritage centre and Wentworth Woodhouse
Superb
I think you must be a freemason James
No need to answer wink wink
Fab outfit Helen
Research the Millennial Reign or post millennial mud flood etc cos that architecture looks amazing and the surrender of the castle unconvincing
Hidden History
You've let the cat out of the bag. I've been keeping Ludlow and Shropshire secret since I worked there in the 90's. It's a truly unspoilt area of the UK. Great vid, thank you both.
Top tip, once you see the price of an hotel on comparison sites ring the hotel direct and they will usually beat the price as they then don't have to pay commission
Ludlow?! Come to Liverpool guys
Gary, l think they were in Liverpool recently. From memory, might be wrong , but l recall Helen asked someone in the bombed out church at the top of Bold Street who bombed it? She’s great 😀
Yes we've got too Liverpool videos on here 😊
@@bythecurb saw those 2 Helen i was talking about you's coming back
That was a cracking video , them old pubs are the best it was just like going back in time I bet Xmas there is pretty amazing
I think your shoe stopping squeaking in the pub
Reminded me of the laurel and hardy movie when he had a noisy shoe also 😂😂
You will love some of the buildings here in Wroclaw and pubs hope to see you here one day. Take care you two 😊
When we visited Ludlow, we would always have a vist to Ross on Wye, then go to Symonds Yat, and walk up to the top of Yat rock ( its an easy
hike James) the views of the river wye from there are spectacular, also you can watch the Peregrine falcons, And hire canoes on the lovely river wye.
It is an outstanding and beautiful area.
My friend's in Benidorm at the mo, it's cold and raining, you made a good choice, happy easter ❤
Happy Easter to you too 😊
So, I'm guessing a parlor pub is a posh version of a micro pub like we have up norff !I
Fascinating history we have in this country, thanks for sharing.
Hi James it's really great watching you two ,hope you get your shoes Ange
Thank you Ange, I got some eventually 😊
Good got to treat yourself ,
Nice video, Shropshire is a lovely county we regularly go for days out and shopping trips as we live close by in Wolverhampton.
Fantastic video will have to visit Shropshire Helen looks great in the new coat. Enjoy looking at all the interesting old buildings. Well done xx 😊
Thank you 😊❤️
Shropshire is my home county and Ludlow really is a hidden gem
Wow great video guys, thanks for sharing 👍.
