I like this method of making 32 HSTs at a time. I'd like to see more videos in the future showing your progress on this quilt. Today I spent more than 15 minutes quilting fabric and making it into a Santa sack.
Such a fast way to make HSTs!! Thanks for sharing! I cleaned my machine this morning & made 2 lil mug rugs for 2 of my staff today. Plan to make more tomorrow!
When you showed the layer cake and all your other fabrics I heard it....first the piano and then the drums on the intro of....oh yeah, it's one of my favorites 🎵🎶🎶🎵 good day sunshine.... good day sunshine..... 🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶 Love this quilt with the bajillion gazillion pieces and you're awesome for knowing that in time you're gonna finish it. Spectacular!!! Stunning!!! But, it's gonna take a minute longer if you keep dancing. 🤓 Ah, who cares... what's another few minutes. 🎶🎶 I need to laugh and when the sun is out I've got something I can laugh about 🎶🎶🎶🎶 thanks for another inspiration Shelina!
I worked on a side project. I cut 2" squares out of my scrap bin to sew up with a bunch of low volume 2" squares that came from a quilt I made for my daughter.(I cut them wrong!). Thanks for the tutorial on hsts from a layer cake! I have a few extra pieces from layers cakes that I'm going to have to try. Maybe they go with the project I started today.
Thanks for my little dance break! Love that song! Now i have to find a way to stop dancing every time I look at this quilt! You get an entry in the drawing.
That sounds like a great plan, Ann! This technique really does make quick work of getting those HSTS made. Fast and easy! You get two entries in the drawing.
@@annhinz6326am chuckling cuz you, Shelina and I and ???? Other people are dancing....maybe I better go get my hairbrush microphone like I used to do over 60 years ago. 😂
Thank you for reminding me about that method- no special rulers needed - working on finishing small Christmas projects that didn't get completed last year😊 15 minutes was all that was needed for one 😀
You are so welcome! That is great that you are able to finish your Christmas projects this year. Just save some for next year. 😃 That happens to me a lot, especially errands. I delay it forever only to find that it only took a few minutes to get it done. Big weight off my shoulder. You get two entries in the drawing.
Good question! I am planning on making these blocks until I am sick of making them, and then put the quilt together. I don't think I will have the motivation to make it a big bed quilt, but am hoping to at least get to a lap size. Thank you for watching every day, AuntieEllen. You get another entry in the drawing today.
@ Thank you. I M working on a Legacy Strip Quilt with strips going back over 25 years. I rough sewed the last block today. It takes two Hours for Each Block. I already packed up the strips I’m not going to use for my DOTS & DASHES to give to a Subscriber Quilter! 😍😍✅
That is great that you are using that 25-year-old fabric. They were probably waiting for their time to shine! That is going to be a really lucky winner of an Auntie Ellen quilt!
@ I am actually keeping the his one for my Trunk Show and Exhibits. I still have a long way to go. Not all of the strips are 25 years old. That’s when I started putting some of the smaller strips aside so that I could do this one day. I keep my Batik and African Fabrics separate although a few stray pieces wound up in here. I look forward to your next Video. 💜💜💜 AuntieEllen
Your way of making half square triangles is much easier. I will try it. This was a very educational video, and I enjoyed it. I did my 15 minutes today of sewing. I'm so glad I'm retired, I can really enjoy sewing my quilts
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you do make your HSTs with this method! I am also glad you are enjoying your retirement! You get two entries in the drawing.
While I watched your past videos today, I finished two table runners and a second Winter Pines quilt top. I really like the idea of making a yellow and white quilt. Such a sunny idea!
Thanks, SammieAnne, I am glad you enjoyed the video! Since it is straight piecing, it is just a matter of making lots and lots of blocks. I reserve the right to make it a lap quilt though! You get an entry in the drawing!
Thank you for introducing me to this method. I will definitely save this video for future reference. I’m going to get my linen fabric prepped so when I find the “right” pattern, that part will be done! Thank you again.
What a pretty layer cake! And it seems like buying new fabric did make you make progress after all 😂 15 minutes sewing sashings on my modern Jane today, and now I’m settling in for some hand quilting
It’s amazing how new fabric can motivate us to keep moving forward! I guess I need to keep buying more every time I feel stalled. 😏You get two entries in the drawing.
Day 16! We are rolling along! I don’t enjoy making HST’s but having a “trick” helps. Oh , Shelina, who of us has NOT bought “unnecessary” fabric! It does kind of make you feel like you maybe made some progress! 😀 I’m impressed that you leave notes to yourself so you have some clue what’s going on when you return. GOOD NEWS: my cat quilt, the backing, AND the coordinating pillow (which I made today) are all done and in the bag to go to the quilter tomorrow!! I’m both excited and relieved! I “had” to order fabric for binding (see what I mean? there was no fabric in my studio! 😂😂😂) and it hasn’t arrived yet; hopefully it will arrive soon and I can have binding ready. This project turned out to be more work than I anticipated; but it is adorable! Now I have to do some cleaning after not picking up and putting stuff away on two projects. 🥰
Congratulations on getting the quilt all ready for the quilter. I am sure that feels so good that you had to do a happy dance, and another one when you were shopping for binding fabric! I am going to have to do a lot of cleaning myself at some point. You get two entries in the drawing.
So funny :"I don't want to know how many triangles are in the quilt." I can relate. I've purchased and used various types of triangle papers. I've always found that I have to trim the squares down so I prefer doing what you did and just marking my own. I do find if I starch fabric it helps those bias seams a little stiffer when sewn. I'm still working on my vintage hankie project. Was supposed to have completed for Xmas.
It’s so much easier to just mark the triangles on the fabric. Plus it is cheaper and you don't have to keep track of where you put the triangle paper. Starch is a great idea. I always seem to forget when I need it. There are a few days left for Christmas yet, so you have time to finish your hankie project. You get two entries in the drawing.
I have used the papers and have made 8 at a time HST, but never 32!! I’ll try it though next time I need that many small ones. Got my new freezer paper templates made so I’m back to making kite blocks!
You are going to love how much faster this is! The freezer paper templates seem to make it much easier to make those kites! You get two entries in the drawing.
Wow! That's a lot of HSTs! A great method. I wonder if there's a chart out there that would tell you what size square is needed to produce specific size HSTs. I didn't get to sew today because I had to make an unexpected day trip to Pittsburgh. Probably going to be a few more in the weeks to come.🤷♀️
There are lots of charts out there and I am sure a few are even available for free! The formula is to add 7/8" to the finished size of the HST. I hope your trip to Pittsburgh was good. You get an entry in the drawing.
Funny...this reminds me of the number in color test. Can you see a number in the color field? Plus it makes me a little dizzy to look at. Its' busy pattern is also reminding me of stain glass windows. A different look all together though.
So funny, I hadn't noticed, but it does look like the color test colors. I like optical illusion quilts and somehow this one just called to me. This is my first optical illusion quilt but I don't think it will be my last. I don't think it makes you dizzy until you start turning the blocks in different directions so hopefully it will be easy enough to piece. Good thing we turn the block right side down to sew! I see the stained glass window too now! You get an entry in the drawing.
I love yellow, too. I am watching for the second time because the first time i had you on while I was doing a little bit of cutting, ...so very little I am ashamed to say how little it was. And I did sew a couple lines on a crumb block. You are brave to make this quilt...does it say how many half square triangles there are in it?
Yellow is my happy color! Yes the pattern does say how many HSTs are in there. It uses 4 digits that starts with a 1, but I am not looking up the exact number. You get two entries in the drawing.
I like this method of making 32 HSTs at a time. I'd like to see more videos in the future showing your progress on this quilt. Today I spent more than 15 minutes quilting fabric and making it into a Santa sack.
Great idea! I'll be sure to show you how this quilt comes together. You get two entries in the drawing.

I will have to keep this way of cutting half square triangles. Watched while quilting my grandson’s quilt.
So nice that you are at the quilting stage! You get two entries in the drawing.
Loved this Quilt Pattern. What size Quilt are you planning on making? 💜💜💜
Comment 16 out of 16 days. AuntieEllen

I keep my batiks and African fabrics separate from the other fabrics, which are sorted by colors, too. They are just so special.

You have been busy! A yellow and white quilt is a perfect way to bring in the sunshine! You get two entries in the drawing.
Certainly a quilt for the experienced but you made it look easy!
It is a four patch, but it does need a patient quilter to make that many four patches. You get an entry in the drawing.
I am amazed how many half square triangles are in a layer cake. Definitely give this a try. Great quilt
There are a lot of HSTs hidden in that little layer cake square. You get an entry n the drawing.
wow, you made 32 triangles, a great time save. I spent 15 minutes, ironing and trimming much larger 1/2 triangles.
That is a lot of triangles in a couple of layer cake squares! Smart of you for using bigger triangles! You get two entries in the drawing.
Goodness! That quilt is SO involved! I applaud your ambition. I also enjoyed your video. Thank you :)
