WRX A/C Compresser Clutch & Pulley Remove and Install | How To

  • We are replacing the A/C Compressor Pulley and clutch because it started making a terrible grinding noise when it would activate. This kit we bought was about $45 and seems to be like OEM style.
    We have very limited tools and are just two people trying to fix a problem themselves, we aren't professionals.

    I just did the same repair with some cheap snap ring pliers from Walmart and it looks like you almost had an easier time! I ended up using none of the spacers when I put it back together (tapping everything in well before the snap rings) and it seems like I'm getting good engagement and no scraping when it disengages (not sure why the original one had 2 spacers in it but maybe the new kit I bought off ebay has different tolerances).
    The fix seems to have fixed my very noisy when engaged AC compressor, and hopefully fixes my half hot/half cool AC when it gets warmer (I keep checking refrigerant and it is in the recommended range but my AC was struggling to blow cold air last summer).

  • @asiegel87
    @asiegel87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How is it holding up? I've been following along and fixing my own compressor.
    If you need spacers to reassemble the clutch I'm guessing your bearings weren't actually seated all the way and the snap ring wasn't locked in all the way around. I had to check and beat on the pulley a few times to get the bearings to clear the slot for the snap ring. The center was sticking out slightly past the pulley. No issues with clearance on reassembly after that.

    How'd you tension the belt once you got the pulley replaced? I'm fixing my '11 WRX and it doesn't have the same independent tensioner as my bugeye. 🙈 Is it tensioned based off the alternator? 🙏😅

    • @snke32
      @snke32 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      11's Wrx doesn't have a tensioner, is a stretch belt type and goes in very tight, the tool helps a lot, but definitely can be installed with a couple of screwdrivers and rotating the crank pulley to spin everything and make the belt start catching the ridges of the ac pulley, good luck!

    • @ChelszH
      @ChelszH  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      zeppelin 911 yes, the ac clutch has to engage in order for the compressor to work. If it’s not then that’s probably your issue.

    Is this a STI or regular wrx? My a/c was also making a sound and now its gotten to the point where my a/c doesn’t even cool when on most the time and im fairly certain is just the clutch, not the whole compressor, that needs replacing. When I turn on my ac the clutch doesn’t even spin which is why it doesn’t cool obviously. Im having a hard time finding a clutch wrx, most im finding are for the sti.

    • @ChelszH
      @ChelszH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is just a WRX, it's not an STI. If you're low on R134 I don't think the clutch will engage. You may need to check for leaks in your system. But if it was making a noise before it may be just the clutch on it needing to be replaced.
