I'll bet it is due to the double track project CSX embarked upon 20 years ago. They probably decided a bridge at that location wasn't cost effective considering the low amount of vehicular traffic.
I looked on Google Maps for this crossing and find the tracks are double on either side of the crossing. For some reason one track was made an overpass. I also find the tracks go through Sherwood, OH. We go through Sherwood, OH (Not the Forest) while traveling to and from Harrison Lake for family reunions. Since this is not Sherwood Forest we did not see the High Sheriff of Nottingham or Robin Hood and his Merry Men.😁😁😁 hehehe
Alot of people don't understand the facts behind this railroad crossing. This is a 2 way class 1 split. The 2 mainlines on each side of the bridge are owned by different class 1 railroads. BNSF, and csx. Since both go west and bnsf doesn't go to much further east, the side of the bridge the trains are on is determined by where the freight goes which then determines whether its a load for bnsf or the csx. The bridge a a regular traffic route if I'm not mistaken.
The driver of the white pickup needs a ticket for violating the law. Your supposed to stop on the red lights regardless of the gates going down. They could be malfunctioning and if you cross your putting your life in danger, the train could be on top of you. Even if you see the train in the distance it's illegal to cross.
No, the crossing gate only stops drivers coming in the opposite direction. The driver did not get trapped. The reason they have that third gate is to keep traffic from having to sit and wait under the railway bridge. Not sure why, but thats how its set up

Both tracks are CSX. BNSF has a haulage agreement that allows their trains to use the line, but it belongs to CSX.
