This is why we have to respect those gates- even when it doesn't seem necessary!
I think they have it so if the bridge collapsed nothing or nobody would be under it. My thinking
Oh never mind I thought the only rr was above the bridge🤣
Not sure
@@billybob-zz5sv yea I didn't see that coming lol
@@billybob-zz5sv It probably has more to do with line of sight than being concerned about the bridge collapsing.
OK, I've got it. I wondered why they would have a grade crossing for a train trestle.
Because it's Ohio 😂
It took me a minute but then I realized when they zoomed in that one line is at rd level and the other is elevated
I have seen a simular one in Stockton, Ca.
Agreed
I'm a witch I am coming to your house to steal your stuff away
Wow, without the crossing gates anyone driving through the underpass would be totally blind to the surface train…
They would be a whole new world.💀
Incredibly unique and entertaining post, thanks. Never saw an overpass so close to a land crossing, very cool, what a perspective. Hope to see this as a live camera some day.
Here in Earth City, MO, there's a very sketchy setup like this off MO 141 and MO 370. No gates, just dirty incandescent lamps that can barely be seen.
No kidding! Talk about a completely obstructed view for both operators!
This could have been 2 different competing rail lines from a long time ago

Truly one of those head-scratching places. I do remember a couple dual-level areas in Indiana are the Erie Lackawanna Mainline. We have a small variation of this crossing in Milwaukee where there is a crossbuck in front of a concrete overpass to call attention to a grade crossing on the other side that is a street running spur into an asphalt distributorship. The overpass is CP the street trackage is UP. 200 block East Washington St pretty much in line with the huge Allen-Bradley four-faced clock. Thanks for sharing this Oddity
Weird! I thought that the bridged track was the 'up' line, and the crossing was the 'down' line, but those trains were travelling in opposite directions, and yet using the same track. What traffic, if any, uses the bridge?
@@davidgrayburnhale4125looking at Google Maps seems to indicate this is just a regular double tracked line: maps.app.goo.gl/brvnqzmfpyVQMSmx8
It would be so cool to have a train passing on the high track at the same time that a train was passing at the grade crossing!
Yes, that would be fantastic!
@@usmale49 Beautiful Siamese cat for your picture! Do you actually own one?
@@BrylcreemBill My "Baby Girl" is part Lilac Point Siamese and part Gray Tabby. So I guess I kind of own a Siamese...she's just beautiful. "Baby" will be 17 years of age on March 1 of this year (2024)! Found her when she was barely six weeks old, under a pile of trash/garbage!! Thanks for asking!
We've got a crossing just like that at 13th st. in Wichita. The BNSF, UP, and K&O, all cross overhead, but the WTA, ( Wichita Terminal Assn.) has to cross at grade to access the former Cargill mill, on the s.side of 13th st., so the signals are situated exactly the same.
Oh boy you fooled me! I didn’t even see the rails on the other side until you zoomed in 😂
It fooled me as well I was like why lol 😂😂😂
Cool video and interesting crossing.
A very unique train video! I don't think I have ever seen two rail lines that close together at different elevations. Thank You!
That’s the greatest railroad crossing I’ve seen
And I just subscribed to your TH-cam channel
That is so cool.
A 'Swift' truck could get stuck 2 different ways at that crossing!
Excellent catch!! Love the perspective!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Cool video
I remember seeing this crossing recorded by someone else years back. It’s too bad that GE bell died
Judging by the bridge, looks like one vehicle can get by at a time and in case of a backlog of traffic, having the gate there to stop oncoming traffic before reaching the bridge would allow cars that are stopped on or near the tracks on the other side to clear.
It's tracks 1 & 2 of the split grade main, this runs for several miles in Northwest Ohio and into Indiana. Split grades are kind of rare. On the old Pennsylvania RR main that ran between Bradford, OH and Columbus ("The Bradford Line"), there was a three-way split grade (3 mains) between St. Paris and Urbana.
So that's why the trackbed looks weird in certain areas, and why it appears like that. Theres sets of bridges east of Urbana, and it all makes sense now. Thank you!
@@WesternOhioInterurbanHistory You're welcome, I'm glad this post was helpful to you!
putting 1 track on a bridge, and the other not, is kind of ridicolous. Like in an underdeveloped country, "there was only money to elevate one track".
@@holger_p by the style of the underpass the elevated track was there decades before the street grade track was installed . It was much cheaper and faster to build it that way .
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Sure, installing no traffic lights on intersections is also always faster and cheaper, but people don't want it always cheap in a civilized country.
They want it nice, safe and comfortable.
There's a crossing just like this near me. Except the grade crossing is very rarely used, and there's no lights or gate. It's just a bell that I'm not sure even works anymore. It's used probably less than once a year mostly for MOW equipment. The overpass is the mainline.
Yup, it had me scratching my head - "Why are there barriers on a trestle bridge?" but then it becomes clear. Anyon driving under the bridge wouldn't imagine that there's a level crossing just beyond it 😱.
BTW, your freight trains are immense! Here in UK, a long freight train is about 25 cars!
Yep, such a major blind spot for sure. I’m almost certain there’s plenty more other crossings out there that needs to have the arm and lights on them for other instances of blind spots for everyone’s safety
It had me fooled for a while, too.
Nice Catches
The speed of the trains at this crossing!! Put as many gates wherever needed to preserve life and rail action together.
On a walking tour in Northumberland (UK) we had a pedestrian crossing of the main London to Edinburgh line. Each side of the line there’s a phone linked to the signal boxes (one for up, one for down). You phone for clearance - the passenger trains do 125mph on that stretch of line…
Back in the 90's, I live in Defiance, Oh., which isn't very far from this crossing.
I rode my motorcycle much as possible in the warm months.
Came thru here many times....werid!. Kinda stumbled across this video...
On this day i was at Fostoria and I recorded trains in the morning about 12 to 2 and I didn't see these trains. Nice crossing, and it is sad the GE electronic bell died.
Bell only programmed to ring on initialization and until the gates come down.
There used to be 2 GE E bells both of which were functional. One got replaced and the other is dead unfortunately.
I just went to google maps to this location ... when viewed from the south they got a train on the bridge and from the north they got a train on the level crossing ... how cool is that !
Nice one....thanks for sharing
It would make an attractive feature on a model rr. 👍👍👍
This is probably the strangest railroad crossing I've ever seen. I mean, not only are there 2 tracks but one of them is high up while the other is on solid ground. Sure is something you don't see every day huh?
I was driving up to this crossing late one night and stopped to make sure there was no train coming. There was none and just as I was going across I heard a loud train and it scared me so much. Right then a train had passed on the top rail. I never forgot that.
Wow that would definitely freak me out too especially at night
This was about 15 years ago and there were no gates, just cross bucks. I was with my brother who worked on the signals in that area so he was familiar with it but I was not. I think I know what it feels like to be 1 second from death.
I like seeing a good old 3 engine mail train keeping schedule …
It's amazing how little it takes to entertain some of us.
Ok, you got me as well. I was thinking whoever put crossing gates at an overpass was doing some serious snorting that day. 😅
That was great, I may have to go check that out myself. Thanks for the share
Brit here, took me a while to get my bearings! Never seen such a configuration before, nothing like this in the UK. While awesome, has to be said, INCREDIBLY Dangerous!! lol. Brilliant video, thanks for the upload.
It's only "incredibly dangerous" if you've been softened up by the Globalist Safety Religion. Some of us still have bones, and are the only reason the rest of you are alive.
I have never seen a crossing like that before. Very nice find.
That's pretty neat! 👍
What a wonderful place to film a locomotive.
I've known about this crossing a while, live in Indiana... but have never gone and seen it for myself. But it's always been extremely fascinating to me. How could it not be?? The grade separation is seriously cool.
The Erie Lackawanna through IN had a few areas of grade separation like this, but when it came to crossings, it was either a level crossing with both tracks, a road overpass over the tracks, or two rail overpasses at different heights above the road. But never a level crossing/overpass deal like this. This is a rarity for sure. And this line is an active Class 1 line... the EL has been removed for decades now.
Remarkable
Very Beautifull and Very Excellent catching ❤️👍
VERY rare GE e-bell on that close mast! cool catch
Very interesting to have one track cross the crossing and one track go above. Why not just have both cross the street or go over on a bridge
They probably belong to different railroads. We know that the surface line is CSX. The overhead is probably Norfolk Southern.
@@frederickschulkind8431Both tracks are actually the same line, the CSX Garrett Sub, why is one of the tracks elevated? I don’t know
@@CarsonTrains someone else mentioned the lower tracks went into a mill or factory area, so probably close enough that the extra grade / slope is an issue.
Maybe the grade crossing was added sometime after the elevated track was built, as that bridge appears to be very old.
@@DntHtThPlya Most likely you are correct. See my comment above.
Unique rail crossing and passage way, with the narrow bridge. Nice video.
Very interesting railway crossing. Looks very unique with all those barriers in front of and behind the bridge etc. Thumbs up! :)
Greetings
Mega
Wow, way cool catch. Thanks for sharing. Is the overpass for a different rail company?😎👍
Thanks, and no both of the tracks are the CSX Garret Sub, I’m not sure why one of the tracks in elevated
@@CarsonTrainswas the level track also suppose to become elevated? From a certain angle it looks like that.
@CarsonTrains I followed this line on Google for several miles each way and this is the only crossing like this I found. My assumption is the at grade track was built later. Perhaps to old bridge here was not structurally sound enough to configure 2 tracks ?
@@MrWc867it’s the logical assumption, there’s only one main in the past, and when they added the second one the rr don’t want to make a second overpass so they make a grade crossing adjacent to the main track
I was expecting debris to fall from the bridge when the train passes over it, and that's why the crossing gates were needed...
In Owings Mills, Maryland, on Reisterstown Road, there is a CSX (formerly Western Maryland Railroad) overpass. About a hundred yards south there used to be an at-grade crossing that was a spur of the main line. Google street view shows the old tracks.
Well that was interesting.

Hey, I don't live far from there! For years, this just had flashing lights
I shot video of the CSX OCS there a few years ago.
Always wondered why the bells tend to stop ringing once the gates lower... 🤔
Because the noise of the train would drown them out?
It’s a newer type of bell combination, I have not seen many so far where the bell stops when the gate is all the way down.
@@JohnGeorgeBauerBuisI've been seeing this around my area for many years (I'm going to guess that it's been more than 30 years). It makes perfect sense, though. There's no need for the fake bell sounds to continue once the gates are down. These things are all controlled with electronics now, so greater nuances are possible in how such things function.
Hi from U.K. Time for a picnic whilst you wait for train to pass. Why do lights keep going out ?
The lights use LEDs that flicker at a frequency that you normally don't see (probably 30 Hz, half the mains frequency), but is very close to the shutter speed of the camera. In reality, you don't see the lights dim. It's just that sometimes the camera takes a picture right at the time when the leds are off for a very short time.
great clip ... the best ever ... the realism was gripping ... and what action scenes ... hard to breathe now
I think is part of the ex-B&O mainline from Pittsburgh to Chicago. Amtrak's Broadway Ltd., and then, The Three Rivers would have come through here from 1990 to 2005.
I grew up 10 miles from this location in the 50’s and know this location. There was no crossing gate or lights at this location back then. Only crossbucks. This crossing is on the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio to Chicago which was bough out by the Chessie System.
I see an awesome movie seen... Come down that hill on the other side of the tracks,,, hit the tracks fly right over the bridge... Just the good old boys..
Looks like these tracks are BOTH owned by CSX. Wow
Wonderful perspective clip! Had me thinking for a bit.
Love, trains
That’s sad both GE bells died
This crossing is about 20 minutes from where I live. But I had no idea it is there. I need to check it out
Yeah extremely trippy at first of why there are crossings around that bridge until the guy zooms in and surprise surprise there is another track.
Interesting! I used to have older relatives living in Hicksville and area. They've since passed or moved. I might still have cousins in the area?
Ah. I wonder if this overpass has 'eaten'/shaved trucks like the 11'+8" bridge?
Wow that could really scare the beejezus out of someone! ❤
I was canvassing for a citizen action group in Hicksville back in winter of 1993/94, it was very surreal!
Awesome vid
Do trains go across the bridge, or only use the Level Crossing now?
Nifty idea for a layout!
Cool! I was able to find this crossing on Google Maps and see it from both sides.
Talk about a blind crossing! Wow!
Wow I watched this type of Railway Crossing in which one track is high up and another track on the beneath. 😮😮😮😮😮😮😊😊😊😊😊
I notice that the bridge height is 11" and are measured without train traffic. How much deflection down does a train have on the bridge when passing because that opening is going to shrink some when something heavy is on it. Every driver should know the height of their vehicle, but that is a down and up road under the bridge, so you're going to height if the road on either side isn't flat longer than the vehicle passing under it. Wonder what happens to the signals if something is crossing the bridge? Oh, and this is a science and math question. 🙃
You had me fooled! I thought, why would they put up a gate for a trestle? Surprise Surprise! Thanks for the Vid!
I was like.. The tracks are above the bridge and streets, why would it need a railroad crossing?.. then I saw the train, I was like.. Oh.. That's why!
This is nicely different of track set up.
Sch..., was hast du mich gerade verarscht.
GENIAL!
It’s just confusing on what side is which on the crossing. I think left side of the road is Indiana, and the right side (the side his camera is on) is in Ohio. It just confuses me a lot. Very rare crossing on a very rare spot
I found the crossing in Google Maps, you are indeed correct with where the states are.
@@PHILLYCHEESESTEAK26 yeah I did that lol
Excellent video 📸 didn't see this train 🚃 coming
Good shot!
wow man I just retired after 42 years trucking the first thing I saw was the clearance sign & you can see that bridge was hit by a truck @ some time
But when the train came past THAT BLEW MY MIND
Omg I was literally laughing looking at the thumbnail for this video.
Like I'm gonna put a railroad crossing arm at a overpass 🤣.
Like One of those funny video fails that someone didn't do there job well.
But I can totally understand the idea of this, driving through the tunnel and coming out right meeting at the crossing Is a accident waiting to happen. So the extra added crossing arm is perfect for getting your attention that something is ahead.... but All you see is a tunnel.
Can totally understand how many accidents would happen if that crossing arm wasn't in that odd spot...... but things are there for a reason...... this is a great example
Jeez that 2 trains are fast what is hurry
Wasn’t expecting that from the first camera angle! 😂
That is an interesting railroad crossing!
If that's the line I think it is the train is on the original B&O line. The one with the trestle is the High line. It was built from Akron to Chicago to limit crossings and waits for other railroads especially the Pennsy which would tie B&O trains up.
I want to go there someday, weird but unique setup, i think having a third crossing signal after the one you are standing at is kind of odd as well, but its necessary because what if you get caught up between the first right signal and the second right signal
CSX went right through there on the second video
Good job brother
How many wagons were in the train ? Anyone?
Amazing video.
Wow I've never seen a railroad crossing like this before especially with a Crossing signal next to a train trestle bridge and a train track that's pretty awesome with another train track on the other side
Ya got me! 🤣🤣
It used to only have signals. I always hated that crossing
Cool! Nice Concept for a Model layout 🛠🛤🤩👍
What a trip. Had me there for a minute. 😅
Before pressing play - Why?
After pressing play - Nevermind.
The thumbnail is what sells this.
When I saw this I was totally baffled - why gates for an underpass? I'm sure plenty of drivers have been likewise confused, good thing the second gate is there as some have likely passed around the "nonsense" first one.
Awesome shot
