(For foreigners) I would like to explain brief story of Military Conscription in Thailand. Thailand has a conscription, but not all Thai men serve the National Service. In one conscription period which is taken place around early April every years, there are men who applied to serve voluntarily, or with their own intentions, if the areas have the full numbers of the applicants as the Armed Forces require, other men who don't apply will not be drafted, but if not, there will be a lottery called "Red Card/Black Card". If the men get red card, they will be drafted, if the men get black card, they will not be drafted. It is not like in some nations like South Korea where Military Service is mandatory for every men. If Thai men are the "Army Reserved Force Students" for at least 3 years (mostly during the high school), they will be exempted from the National Service too, but they have to go the the units to present themselves when the units require. The age of conscription in Thailand is 21, but Thai men can request for postponement of the military service if they have to study or work, until age 26, during this time, they have to present themselves at the units to give their forms of postponement to the officers. When they reach 26, they have to apply to serve the National Service or pick up the Red Card/Black Card. The lengths of the National Service are also varied. If the men apply to serve voluntarily, they will serve - 6 months (If they have bachelor degree.), 1 year (if they have high school diploma.), 2 years (If they graduate lower than high school level.). If the men pick Red Card/Black Card - If they get Black Card, they will not be drafted. If they get Red Card, they will serve - 1 year (If they have bachelor degree.), 2 years (If they don't have bachelor degree.). When men become soldiers, they will receive the basic training for about 10 weeks or around 3 months. Their relatives can visit them after their first 20 days. (or more, I'm not sure about the exact number). After that, they will be appointed different works or missions.
