    Yes it's still going strong. Calibrating incubator temps isn't unusual even for more expensive ones but I do get your point - I don't know why they can't be accurate?

    I've written a more comprehensive article about it on my blog Self Sufficient Me which would be worth reading before buying this incubator (even if I do say so myself); but essentially, I paid $159 AU (postage included) from eBay. I believe they're even cheaper now from some sellers. Cheers :)

    Daniel, I may do a step by step vid on set-up in the future some time but we're actually talking about this incubator on our forum at the moment if you'd like to pop over I'm happy to go through it with you no problem at all! I can't link here but just Google "Self Sufficient Culture" then find the "incubator" thread. See you there :)

    Any idea on how to reset the day indicator back to zero? Mine will not go back to zero even if I hit the little reset switch next to it. Unplug it and it still stays on the last day.

    I know that I'm late to the game, but hopefully someone can give me some feedback on this type of automatic egg turner. For decades we've hand turned our eggs... It's a chore, but never too much of a chore. This year we decided to expand our incubation to several batches, and bought a very similar incubator as the one reviewed here. The egg turner doesn't turn the eggs... It just tilts them slightly. Many times it stops with the trays flat, meaning it rotates a bit, then goes the other way, and stops flat. Is this normal? Do the eggs only need a slight tilt one way or the other? Thanks kindly.

    I learned by ordering another incubator that if ever this type of incubator is not reading the temperature correctly, counting the days correctly, or the egg turner is not working, you can fix that by holding down the positive and negative signs for six seconds. This is a master reboot which will cause the incubator to work for you again and reset the computer operating system within it.

    Cheap as chips mate, we got 2 of these and the little plastic bit that connects the motor to the egg tray crapped out on one of them, also the electrical inlet on one of them broke but we managed to do a fix.
    We only had 4 hatches from these until we went and got an R-COM King suro 20.

    I've got the newer model (clear sides) in 96 egg configuration.Sits perfectly at about 99.5/37.5 and the humidity sits at 65%
    I only paid about £52 for a new one so maybe $85 US
    IT WORKS BRILLIANTLY HATCH RATE 75-90%

      That's great hear! Maybe the newer models are improved (of course, they should be always striving to improve products). The thing I like is the PRICE because the consumer shouldn't have to pay hundreds for a reliable incubator. Thanks for letting us know your experience with the latest model. Cheers :)

      Self Sufficient Me hi buddy thank you for your comment.
      I suspect these mainly yellow Chinese incubators are made by a small group of company using shared components in what is after all a fairly simple piece of apparatus.
      With feedback and returns they will have been upgrading thermos and motors I would imagine from the first lot that burst onto the scene.
      For completeness I'll upload a picture of the one I use as I've noticed a few of the older Ines being resold on eBay etc as it will help your readers to decide how far down the 'evolutionary' chain the machine they are contemplating purchasing falls.
      I'll post a couple of Photobucket links shortly.

      It's quite easy but to get the humidity high enough on the last two days you'll need to put a damp sponge into the incubator.

    I purchased this incubator in April and had temp problems from he get go so I put the Styrofoam it came in around the unit and made a hole to the one on the side of the unit... We shall see where this goes!

    Rick

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rick Tantlinger You may need to buy a separate hygrometer to measure the humidity accurately if the unit is working properly usually just fill a few chambers to regulate the humidity and then during hatching use more chambers to bump the humidity up into the 60/70 % range. I have a manual on our forum (link in the description) it might be easier to understand than the generic one you got with yours if that's the manual you were referring to...

    hi good day! i recently bought my own 48 egg incubator and at first it worked perfectly and then the temperature refused to stay the correct amount which is 37.5. it is currently 33.3..... what can i do to increase temp? i have placed a few blankets over it but it does not increase.... if it helps.. the humidity is 70.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sarojanie R.Babwah Yeah I did the same thing when mine was failing and basically wrapped the incubator in a doona to try and keep the temp stable. Unfortunately, in the end I had to dump mine and cut my losses - I suppose I got a good couple of years out of it for the money but I would have liked it to last longer... Believe it or not, I've just purchased another cheap Chinese incubator (different brand) to replace this one because I weighed up the options and preferred to spend $85 rather than $750 for the top brands similar size - a glutton for punishment I am LOL... we'll see. I'm sorry your incubator is losing temp I hope you found a solution. Cheers

    my dad gave me an incubator similar to this one. Go look at my new babies, trust me I pour over your videos in doing this, lol My quail were much easier then the chicken eggs. I ran into problems with the chicken eggs, born very wet with the umbilical cord still attached along with half the shell. I just let it drag it around until it fell off. The quail hatched clean and straight up like they suppose to.

    You mentioned place gal steel in the bottom my concern is that metal tend to hold heat which could lead to problem with temperature control

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you think so... wouldn't the thermostat regulate the temp regardless? You want incubators to maintain heat rather than lose it - I don't really think a light galvanised mesh in the base of the incubator would make much difference overall. Good comment though - thanks! :)

    • @MrPilcher01
      @MrPilcher01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just bought one and the one on board has proved 100% reliable , My concern is steel can get hot, Plastic does not radiate heat like metal the reason I'm saying it I'm an engineer by trade and knows what happens id steel temperature rise it requires energy to cool it the thermostat does not have the ability to cool only regulate I've hatch a dozen chook eggs pus a dozen duck eggs so far and I find it needs no modifications does yours have a humidifier? mine ha a small hole in the side to put water into it without removing the lid the temperature & humidity is constant . I was amazed at its simplicity I only open once at 7 days both times to candle and got an 80% strike on both lots of eggs which was far better than I had expected. with the metal you could exceed the 37 degrees which is what concerns me, think of it tis way as a metal camp side mug they hold heat and can take time to cool the heat never disperses quickly, but it up to you

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a humidifier, no... Some of the more expensive incubators do and I suppose I would use it if I had it but I've been hatching out eggs for years without a dedicated humidifier by just using the water channels within. In regards to the galvanised flooring modification, I do get get your point of metals heating up, just be careful of this plastic floor becoming slippery during hatching as it does and this poor footing during the first few hours after hatching can cause splayed legs to occur in chicks. Cheers ;)

      @MrPilcher01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that is so much better I've used one without now I'm sold on the one I've got it looks simular to yours with a tiny hole in the side near the bottom to put water in through with a little bottle, I'm currently doing a dozen duck eggs for a friend

      Haneen Hamid Hi, you'll need fertilised eggs preferably no older than two weeks and optimally under 10 days to have the best chance of a successful hatching. Thanks for your question, cheers :)

    I bought two Of these incubator And take them to Jamaica the first hatched was a mess because I put too Much water which cause the humidity to be sky high but I tried again with only a little drop of water and now it's the best hatch I have ever got only one problem I have now is that one of the fan stop working

    I`ve watched mine in the beginning and it worked fine and then let it be for x numbers of days.. Now the turner wont stay "tipped". The turner goes a half turn, not a quarter if you now how I mean? Do you have any tips how I should do?

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Åsa Engkvist Are the eggs evenly spaced? Is it moving fully from one side back to the other? If the turner is not properly oscillating the eggs then it might be best to manually turn the eggs by hand for this batch until the turner can be fixed or the problem found etc.

      Self Sufficient Me Thank you for answering! :) We solved it. The engine had stopped in wrong position so we had to cut the electricity to the engine in the right position so it will start from there. Hope you understand my description :P
      And if others have this problem maybe this is what they´ll have to do?
      Now (from today) there is 30 eggs from my quails and I hope this time it will work better. Last hatch with "this problem" it only become 2 chicks out of 18 and one was to weak so it died :(
      Great video BTW ;) Hope some day I will be self sufficient too!

      +Emma Porter That's for you to decide Emma but I strongly recommend using extra insulation around this incubator (if you do get it) to help the motor last longer. Personally, I won't be getting another one as there are other cheap incubators on the market, which probably are better designed to be frank. Cheers :)

      Gregory Salmon Unfortunately the manual I have doesn't show how to reset either (I thought it did but it doesn't)... I have a pdf of the manual on our forum (link in the description above) in this there are references to the default settings perhaps you could manually adjust them all back? It's not optimal but better than nothing.

      It works off surface area not "how much" water. Use the inner runs first to keep a steady humidity and when hatching fill all the rail segments and the humidity will increase. :)

    • @kathyisonline2986
      @kathyisonline2986 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was reading 94% humidity after I added about 1/4" water to each of the reservoirs. So I used a turkey baster and took some out. It was still registering about 85% so I took out more. Now there's hardly any water at all and it says 79%. Unfortunately I had already added my eggs. I will have to check early in the morning to see if it has completely dried up. I think that the plastic to plastic is too tight a seal. It needs more ventilation. But if I leave it open, it beeps. So obnoxious. I think that a styrofoam model is better. I have hatched both quail and chickens with a hovabator, but nothing with these plastic things. Maybe it would be better to use the lid with the heater and the fan over a styrofoam base, like the packing that it came with. Or better yet, buy a better incubator.

    Hey Mark, wish i'd come across this video a few weeks ago. I set temp on same incubator as your to 37.5, and out of 17 eggs, 2 hatched and one was helped out with another pipped. all ended up too weak to servive. Tested unit with a glass mercury thermometer and found the temp to be way too low 33 - 33.5. Ive got 12 more turkey eggs and will try again raising temp of machine to 40 as well which really is on 37.5. Very sad and disappointed. I'll check out your link. Thanks
