Idle relearn after will usually remove check engine lights without a tool also, as far as ive seen. Love these forester videos though majorly helpful for all of us.
You have to rev the shit out of it to get the carbon out of the bore after the upper engine cleaner. The egr systems on the boxer motor don’t do it any favours, it always ends up on the bottom of the bore carbon deposits. Which always ends with compression problems as when the rings hit the deposits the whole of the piston ring opens up. Had a ford capri of a family member threw out that much smoke so used four cans of upper engine cleaner one in each bore let it sit for six hours fixed it completely.. it’s basically mr muscle oven cleaner but for subies
Theres no point spraying into the vac hose with engine off as that would have done nothing, even if it got into the intake it would pool as a liquid. it would have been better to spray it with the engine running and let the vacuum suck in the spray while still atomising. To let it work properly, half the can needs to be sprayed into the throttle and intake manifold, then after 10-15 mins, spray the rest into a vacuum line with the engine running.

Did you pick up an extra can of upper engine cleaner for the evo? Been meaning to do it, myself
I never even thought about doing this on the evo until I did the forester, definitely on the to-do list now
