**This video is for educational purposes-
this video was _way_ clearer than the mumbling british guy who rambles for ten minutes
lol thanks dexter ;)
I know right, that guy is so annoying, why can`t he get to the fucking point.
Exactly !!
He's so annoying
I just got this RetroPie today and It never booted to CLI.
Which one , this comment makes me curious... Which guy that enjoys the sound of his own voice way too much are you talking about ? 2 years ago there was only a few known channels , since then there has been a linux explosion on TH-cam .. In the beginning all we had was British guys and old Enterprise guys.
Oh my God. Do you know how long it took me to find the video the video I was searching for? (this video) All I had to do was add 'USB' to my search and BOOM. THANK YOU so much for uploading this video. :D
sorry dude, glad it worked out ;)
+DrewTalks I love ya
Thank you for this video. By far the best ive seen on this topic.
Nice vid mate!
Thanks mate!
Thanks for the post 📯
If you remove files on the USB stick does it remove already loaded roms on the Retropie?
For some reason, when I plug the USB stick to my Raspberry, it wont copy folders to it (tetropie / subfolder) . Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Thanks for the help man! :)
anytime!
You saved me!! Thanks!
can it still add more roms again with the same usb drive?
nice video, 10/10, great, fantastic, wonderful, clear helpful and to the point. amazing.
Thank you Jorey!
thank you man, very nice video
Thanks Grhipis
Super helpful!
very nice video, helped alot!
awesome thanks Lo
What layout are you using in attract mode?
Hey drew, thanks for all the tutorials, they are very helpful, but I am having trouble transferring a few psx games to my rpi... I did everything you said but once I put them in the folder and insert it into my pi, they don't seem to transfer? Any ideas? Thank you
where do you get the games that you add to the usb drive? Very clear video btw!
google there is a ton of sites just search roms and the system
DrewTalks, I am TheWetBandits. This is my second account. Anyway, I tried downloading a SNES Rom off of the first website that came up... The raspberry pi didn't read it. I mounted the room in the right place. Do you need to do anything to the room before you add it into the correct folder?
Hello, how do I transfer the artwork I have with a thumdrive? I am looking for a method that does not require connecting to the internet.
I just did this with psx games for my dad. And none of them are working. He bought a cabinet with retro pie 3 installed with tons of games. Every game I try to add to it doesn’t work. Any idea or solutions?
Hey just a quick question ! I have pre existing games on my pi. About 20 some gigs worth. Is it alright if I use a smaller USB (16g) and will it delete my other games that are on there
MY MAN
Hi i dont have sd card , do i can play retro games by usb only without sd card
What theme where you using? It looked so cool
Carbon theme in emulation station and then I was running "attract mode"
Hey, I'm using a ps4 controller to transfer roms from my usb to the system. After the restart, I can see the games without the retropie logo. Once I remove the usb stick, the games are no longer playable. I tried the "down and dirty" method as well but was unable to tab over on the ps4 controller. What are my options to getting the roms onto the sd card?
I’m having the same problem! I don’t want to have my stick inside the system while playing but whenever I go into the down and dirty method thing, it already has the files where their supposed to be. I copy the files over but When I unplug the usb, I can’t play any games! Please help and sorry for the late reply.
pls respond. does the usb transfer the roms to the sd card (running retropie)? if so would you be able to remove the usb stick after it transfers and not need the usb in the raspberry pie?
Yes!
+DrewTalks Awesome! thanks for replying :D
what about if you only want to use the usb stick vs storing them on the pi?
Hi, great video, can I use file system method to copy games from pi to usb, so I can then put them onto another pi.. hope that makes sense....
yes you just need a linux file system reader
Im gonna go ahead and comment. Id say that he was able to go ahead and give good instructions on how to go ahead and transfer roms to a USB stick and go ahead put them on your retropie. :)
I added 1 rom to my retropie but doesnt work, i go to file manager and the rom apears marked with a (*) what im missing? Scraper?
What is that theme on 3:56 ?
My usb stick stops flashing for a quite a while but like a minute later it’s starts flashing again......when is it finished?
Hi just bought one of these and trying to add more roms , followed this video and when scraping I get this error getting the platform list from the gamesdb.net code 1001 ? Any suggestions ?
I bought one on eBay that happens to be loaded with roms for most of what I want but I need to add some PS1, Dreamcast and PSP then I’ll be set. It’s a 64gb (57gb) and shows about 28gb free. Just want something to play in the living room here and there.
When I hit F5 to copy, nothing happens. What could this be? I see that it says [5Copy] but none of the F buttons are working... Ideas, thoughts?
Answered my own question. There was an F lock feature on my keyboard, holding down [fn] and then hitting F5 brought up the copy feature. Hope this helps others.
I was curious, if I am transferring from USB the automatic way (your first method), if I am only using a 4gb flash drive and have more ROMs than 4gb, can I just load what fits, delete the content on the flash drive (not the folder structure, just the ROMs I added), add the next set and out it back in? Or will that erase the first set of games that I put into retro?
lol I don't know because I have never tried it, I would hope it doesnt delete any games, try it and let us know!
DrewTalks seems the answer is no, I tried deleting one game's cue and bin file and it erased the entire retropie setup on the USB lol
oh wow okay good to know...
drew, bro ur a busy man. you have so much content on here it's hard for you to follow all of us begging you for help haha I borrowed my brothers 32gb retropi sd card to clone, I ended up wiping the card downloaded diskdrill to recover the files 95$ later and I have the files but tried weiting them via win32 and they werent img files so that wouldnt work. a lot of emulation station labeling on files, the real issue is that I have no fucking idea what I'm doing so I'm basically watching every video u have ever posted reading forums and not only trying to educate myself but also working backwards at the same time. I followed your instructions but after changing the usb settings in retropie I'm struggling to get out of the settings without rebooting my pi and when the pi reboots my retropie is deleted?? then I get an error that there are no games, am I able to load my sd card/ retropi this way or do I have to have some themes or games on my system prior??
Great video but not sure if this will work for me.
How do i take the roms off of the sd card and save them to computer for backup. i am building a bartop arcade for my son and only want the arcade games(10 0r so games so it is easy for him to use) on the pi I plan to install in the cabinet. but i would like to save the rest of the roms off of the 128g sd card i purchased so i can add or change the cabinet as he gets older. I lack knowledge in the computer area so any help or advice on this would be a big help.
Use windisk imager to do that
Not sure if you ever got an answer or not but, better later than never.
If you have a laptop that has a slot for the SD card you just stick the SD card in the computer. Next using the file manager you locate the SD card (usually on the page titled "this PC") and double click on it to open it up. You will see all of the items that are on the SD card now. Right click on the files you want to save copies of and a menu will pop up where you will find an option for "duplicate" or "copy to..." both options allow you to save a copy to whatever location you choose.
Hope this helps.
The files arent showing on my usb after i install the stick into my pi im lost plz help
dumb question but i'm new to this... i have the internals of the retropie on my usb however i want to put ps2 roms on the pie do i have to download an emulator for it or just load the roms to the usb it self... kinda lost
Ps2 roms aren't going to work on the Raspberry Pi 3b+
Hi DrewTalks, I downloaded ROMS from emuparadise (they are zip files I think) and I transferred them to my Pi 3 via USB as you instructed, they are showing on my MAME and SNES list (Sega Rally 1 for MAME and Donkey Kong Country 1 for SNES), but they're not working when you press to play them. The screen turns black then just returns to the menu. What am I doing wrong? Can you help me? :-)
Did you ever get an answer from him?
5:23 my usb didn't show up here but the the games did show before going to file manager
what am i doing wrong? i followed your instructions. Im using a 256 gig flash drive. the only difference is that i cant choose FAT32 for the formatting. All i can choose is exFAT or NTFS. i put the usb drive in the razz pi3 and turn it on. I have no indication of how long it is taking or even if it is working because nothing happens that i can see except for the razzs booting up. thank you in advance :)
Did you make a folder on your computer called "retropie" and put it on the flash drive before putting it in your pi
thaaaaank u
0:58 when you have two screens up
two windows explorers
ok thank you
Is there a recommended USB drive size for this? I am running Reys Image on my RPI3.
depends how many roms you want to transfer, price for the money is a 32gb, I would get one with an indicator light myself, comes in handy
Thanks! I found a 64GB drive, though I had to use a 3rd-party program to format it to Fat32 (Win10 kept formatting it to exFat). The rest of the process was flawless! ¡Bravo!
Do you have to have the ROM's extracted? Or can they be in the extracted folder? Or what?
most can stay zipped
@@drewtalks Do you by chance know about MAME ROM's specifically?
@@EricGraham1987 yes zipped
I just plugged in my FAT32 USB into my Raspberry Pi 2 with my "retropie" folder in the USB, I waited for it to stop blinking, I plugged it into my PC and I still had no extra file... Help?
hmmmm very wierd, just did this yesterday and it work...is the pi on and on emulation station?
but why do my roms still not show up on retropie??
Somethings wrong, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I downloaded a rom from emuparadise, and it was a zipped, and I don't know if I need to unzip it or what. I plugged it into my raspberry Pi, and it shows the name of the game (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Euro 990927. No CD), but it won't load. Please help!
I'm having the same problem different game
It's more than likely a bad rom. Try finding it on a different site
My thumb drive doesn't show up on the Pi. I've done everything else correctly. Is there something I'm missing?
You add the folder "retropie"
If my USB has some ROMS on it already in retropie will it add them twice or wil retropie only add new ones?
if they have the same name only once, if even 1 letter is off it will add both
DrewTalks can you remove the USB after loading them on and the Roms will still be on the pi?
DrewTalks Nevermind, you answered the question in another person's thread. thanks.
Yes
were you using a portable keyboard ?
just a regular usb keyboard
Drew Patterson hey thanks for getting back, thanks 😄
anyone know how to transfer roms from retropie to a usb? i have a pi 3 and tried to do an auto mount to play roms directly from usb instead of storing it on my pi but instead I formatted the usb but cant get the roms back on the usb from the pi!
Can you add games this way if you have done the Reys 128gb Image?
Yes
I did everything you said with the thumb drive and I got the internals, but when I downloaded psx rom from emu and plugged it back in my light never stopped blinking for a hole 24 hours!! So I went ahead and restarted emulation station and the games never got there?? what am I doing wrong? can you help ?
Did you put the retropie folder in there and then put it in your pi and the pi populated with all the rom folders? THEN you add the psx roms and replug in
ok I'm going to give it another shot. do you know how long exactly it takes to extract psx games my thumb drive is 32 gb 3.0 and I only tried to transfer six games. guesstimate would be fine and thanks for the reply back!
well the games are huge so maybe one game 15min to 45 would be a guess. The pi 3 is not usb 3.0 so your not going to get those speeds.
it worked sorry it took so long to respond thanks a lot you vids really do help
I did the same exact steps and formatted it to fat32 but I still don't have the file with the bios copied over. What do I do?
same thing happened to me guess u have to stick it in for a while
Does anyone know if I can do this with bios too? Through USB. (Pi zero first setup)
do the same steps appply when transfering from the sd card to the usb dr
Well... I did everything, even downloaded all the games AGAIN to make sure every game goes in the correct folder and nothing happends. hopefully method 2 works.
do you have to format the usb everytime you use it?
no! once its setup you are good to go
Where did you download the roms?
emuparadise
Is it possible to just play the games of usb??
Yes now you can
could I send you my raspberrypi and charge me to do this?
sorry cant do it legally
Drew Patterson I wouldn't be paying you for the roms. I'd be paying you for your time.
Drew Patterson I wouldn't be paying you for the roms. I'd be paying you for your time.
will it work for mac? somehow i can not get split screen
will what work for mac?
I was able to add my roms, but they disappeared and so did the snes emulator, why is that?
they should not disappear... That is wierd
I would kiss you on the mouth right now if I could. This is the only guide that got my pi working for my intoxicated-ass. Much appreciated.
hahaha awesome! glad you have it working!
cool the pagoda in Yangoon
I followed all of these steps, but my USB drive never stops flashing, I've waited about a half an hour.. nothing.. stumped
(using a raspberry pi 0)
cant speak to that, only tried on pi 3, try a small amount of files at first to test it
Where do these so called "ROMs" come from? In all these videos those files are "automatically" on everyone's computer! Except mine
you ahve to download them from sites like emuparadise or arcadepunks, etc
DrewTalks done everything you have said on this video and keep error getting platform list from the gamesdb.net code 1001 ? Any help much appreciated
im not getting the bios and roms folders in my retropie folder
me to
What skin are you USING!!!!! for the es theme!!!!!!!!!!!>>>>>>>>>>????????????????
in es its just the carbon default one, but what i do is go into ATTRACT MODE which is different from ES its a stand along front end
@@drewtalks yo make a video I want this asap
@@drewtalks What is the skin you are using in attract mode?
Can I please get some help.... I followed all the instructions and cant get my roms to work.... i will donate if i can get some help
If your trying the method where you plug in and let the pi grab automatticly I might try the otherway through file manager
DrewTalks what do you mean file manager????
Yes
DrewTalks how do you do that. I have a PI Zero so I was doing USB. are you talking about the way through the network
Its in the video, not sure if its different for pi zero, im on 3. Also in this video how to: th-cam.com/video/9cmLjCjWxRQ/w-d-xo.htmlm48s
can I do the opposite and transfer from the pie to usb
not that i know of...
@@drewtalks thanks I've tride it on Linux it's easy just insert Micro SD into PC and add , remove or copy Roms files fro Image or PC it's so easy
thanks... i'll give this a shot and will report back
thanks for this mate... i got the method starting at 5mins to work... although its just snes at the moment.. i'll add more tomorrow and report back thanx again !!
nice!
does the usb have to be empty
yes, formatted and add a folder called "retropie"
Will this work with rp2?
should do.
Wdf is back directory lol please help
You can see his face at 5:04
And his profule picture
Thats me!!!!
DrewTalks this is really helpful
I did all these steps multiple times and it still didn't work
hmmm might be easier to transfer via wifi if you can?
Ill try great vids btw
link for snes rom pack ? !
try emuparadise, arcadepunks, or retromaniacs they all have em
Did not work for me
it does not show my games or emulators
which method are you using?

Your a good youtuber you deserve more subscribers
wow that was really f*cken nice of you.

DrewTalks hey Drew. I need help clearing my controllers set up. my Xbox controller is not mapped correctly om some games on MLP 200GB image and I need to fix them
If I want to add roms later do I need use the same usb with the old roms still on it?
Yes you can do it either way if the names the same they wont transfer
DrewTalks awesome, thanks. Happy new year!
