Just a heads up guys, if you install retropie on top of raspian you have to install the usbromservice from the manage packages/ manage optional packages in the setup ui.

How do you install the usbromservice? I'm super new to all this and need it dumbed down alot lol. I installed retropi no problem on my rpi4 however I cannot figure out how to move roms to the pi for the life of me. I tried formatting a USB to fat32 and putting the folder named retropie in it and when I plug it in to my rpi4 and boot up retropie it does nothing and I think this may be why

justin B what the original commenter is referring to can be found in the RetroPie setup. I’m also fairly new to all this, so I’m not sure if that’s helpful!

I think this would make for a fun arts and crafts project. It'd be really dope to have a collection of USB sticks in those Flash Pac Blu-Ray style cases, displayed next to your modern game collections.

You can enable exfat on the retropie as well if you wish to use Windows formatting. Quit ES and type in the command line the following:
    sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils
Press enter. Make sure you are hooked up to the internet. After that you can use exfat formatted USB drives just like a fat32 drive.

So, I'm very new to this whole Raspberry Pi & RetroPie thing. I am not very knowledgeable about it at all. Recently, I purchased the LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I was finally able to get it set up and I was able to play a few games on it last night (5/26/21). The main reason why I decided to go with a Raspberry Pi was because I'm a child of the 80s and 90s. I wanted to have a system that let me play retro video games such as arcade games and console games (Genesis & SNES) from that time period. The problem I've run into now is that some of the roms work fine and others don't. I can't figure out why this is happening. I have heard that arcade roms use MAME, etc . . . Some of the arcade and 16-bit console roms are working, but other ones are not. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix this latest issue that I'm facing? Thanks.

Just a thought you mention at some point when copying the files from the pie to the thumbstick drive that you can't tell when it's done if there isn't LED on the thumbstick but can't you simply tell by looking at the back of the Pie board and check if the little green LED is still on?

I see the rom files you are moving are zipped files. Can the roms be transferred over to RetroPie unzipped? Like.. BIN or SMD files? All my roms on my PC are unzipped for other windows emulators. Thanks for the content!

  • @iradhill81
    @iradhill81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My problem: Instead of having all the games transfer to the usb stick is there any way to leave the usb stick as extra storage. My rip4 sd card is 256gb but my usb sd card is only 32gb. Reason why is my image is so large that there is no room left to save input config even if I expand my card size in raspi config. So that usb stick doesn’t need to copy files just store new game data.

Retro rom service is not available in my options :-( and using 4.4. found out the hard way you have to enable it first but you never mentioned on the video. Another thing to note... romservice syncs what you have on your external SD to the PI as well. so my pi run out of space!! Am i missing something here?

Love the videos and sorry to be stupid. I am using a 256 gd Wolfano sd card image, and it is great, and I doubt i will add too many extras. But I would like to add (or try to add) return to castle wolfenstein - that is a classic (from my younger days). The biggest flash drive I have ever bought is half of the size of the sd card I have this image on. Can I add extra games onto the retro with the usb, or must the usb be larger than the sd card? Can I run some games off the usb and others off the sd is I guess what I am trying to ask??
I understood that games on the sd could be deleted from the pi (from your video), but still do not fully understand if I could add extras on a USB drive - it is "only" 128.
Thanks again for the great videos.

i know this is an older video but ETA is my go-to for this stuff given I modded my cab to his specs. For some reason when i put my usb into my Rasberry pi with my transfered new roms. it only shows the games on the usb stick and does not merge or save them.I have formatted in FAT32 and enabled usb in retroarch settings. I can play them off the usb but as soon as I reboot my original libraby is there but nt the new additional roms..what am I doing wrong? i followed these steps to the letter.

edit: no they work aswell when in unzipped folders. thanks for the video, worked!
i get a strange failure message when booting saying it cant load the usb mount service but it works in the end. :)

This didn't work for me on my Raspberry pi 3 with retropie. After removing my 256 GB jump drive from my Raspberry pi, it had sup folders, and one of them was named "roms," but it didn't have console folders in it, or any games. I have 53 consoles on my device. Over 1000 games. SD card has 120 GB. When I put the Jump Drive into the pi, start emulationstation, it only gives me the option to quit. Is it because of my SD card being full? It says I have 0 available space. I want to expand the storage.

When you scrape games on the hard drive, are the scrapes stored on the hard drive as well?

I got everything working, but the retro pi menu isn't popping up, just the emulators.

I know this is late AF but do you need games on your pi first in order for this to work cause I followed the steps and no folders are created on usb drive.

with the disclaimer, does this mean that if I click on all of the links that it will be supporting you more than if I clicked on the links just once?
