Just a heads up guys, if you install retropie on top of raspian you have to install the usbromservice from the manage packages/ manage optional packages in the setup ui.
How do you install the usbromservice? I'm super new to all this and need it dumbed down alot lol. I installed retropi no problem on my rpi4 however I cannot figure out how to move roms to the pi for the life of me. I tried formatting a USB to fat32 and putting the folder named retropie in it and when I plug it in to my rpi4 and boot up retropie it does nothing and I think this may be why
justin B what the original commenter is referring to can be found in the RetroPie setup. I’m also fairly new to all this, so I’m not sure if that’s helpful!
So once this whole process is done, where would any scrapping end up, oh, and game saves too. In other words, once this is done, what gets written where (microSD or external) Please cover all that you can think of that would get written and where it would go after the process. Thanks.
My problem: Instead of having all the games transfer to the usb stick is there any way to leave the usb stick as extra storage. My rip4 sd card is 256gb but my usb sd card is only 32gb. Reason why is my image is so large that there is no room left to save input config even if I expand my card size in raspi config. So that usb stick doesn’t need to copy files just store new game data.
You can enable exfat on the retropie as well if you wish to use Windows formatting. Quit ES and type in the command line the following: sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils Press enter. Make sure you are hooked up to the internet. After that you can use exfat formatted USB drives just like a fat32 drive.
Hey. Can you please do a video that shows how to delete rooms that were on the SD card after setting up the retropie-mount usb option ? I have my roms on the usb but can’t find and delete those that were on the sd card.
Retro rom service is not available in my options :-( and using 4.4. found out the hard way you have to enable it first but you never mentioned on the video. Another thing to note... romservice syncs what you have on your external SD to the PI as well. so my pi run out of space!! Am i missing something here?
UPDATE: I'm using RetroPie 4.4, using `retropie-mount` folder seems to do nothing but empty the USB stick, if I use "retropie" instead of "retropie-mount", it copies all contents of the USB stick inside the micro SD card which is not what I wanted, what am I missing?
Thank you so much!!! I recently just found my pi and wanted to do some games on it. Didn't think it would be this complicated. I am so glad I found this video it worked!!!
I see the rom files you are moving are zipped files. Can the roms be transferred over to RetroPie unzipped? Like.. BIN or SMD files? All my roms on my PC are unzipped for other windows emulators. Thanks for the content!
So, I'm very new to this whole Raspberry Pi & RetroPie thing. I am not very knowledgeable about it at all. Recently, I purchased the LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I was finally able to get it set up and I was able to play a few games on it last night (5/26/21). The main reason why I decided to go with a Raspberry Pi was because I'm a child of the 80s and 90s. I wanted to have a system that let me play retro video games such as arcade games and console games (Genesis & SNES) from that time period. The problem I've run into now is that some of the roms work fine and others don't. I can't figure out why this is happening. I have heard that arcade roms use MAME, etc . . . Some of the arcade and 16-bit console roms are working, but other ones are not. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix this latest issue that I'm facing? Thanks.
Hi, ETA !!! Thnak you for this video !! there is a way to insert manually Video snaps or screenshot directly into the external hard drive or the images/videos stay always on the SDcard ? Thanks for your answer !
i just recieved my odroid xu4 switched from pi 3b+ and my external drive portable 4tb i'm going to see if this works with my portable drive 4tb so i can add more psp and dreamcast games you're tutorials are amazing always and good explained i watched all you video's and subbed.
@@joelthompson1668 i have the odroid xu4 and 4tb portable drive but for some reason i don't understand how to connect the drive it isn't working but it does work on the pc i have also a 400tgb micro sd card so i'm using that atm until i figure out on how to use my 4tb portable external drive
Is there an image with attract mode on it but no ROMs? If not is there a way to start fresh from noobs and add attract mode on. I don't remember if the updated 4.2 or higher has attract mode added on it already.
This didn't work for me on my Raspberry pi 3 with retropie. After removing my 256 GB jump drive from my Raspberry pi, it had sup folders, and one of them was named "roms," but it didn't have console folders in it, or any games. I have 53 consoles on my device. Over 1000 games. SD card has 120 GB. When I put the Jump Drive into the pi, start emulationstation, it only gives me the option to quit. Is it because of my SD card being full? It says I have 0 available space. I want to expand the storage.
I have retro pie set up correctly and have a wired controller set up I also have roms on my computer I have done everything in the video correctly and it transfers the games correctly for the first 1 time but when I try to add more to the pie the only games that show up after I restart the retro pie is what was on the thumb drive what am I doing wrong. Granted I am trying to add arcade games and I am putting them in the arcade folder on the thumb drive
Hi eta, I have been trying to use the usb method for the roms, but when i boot up retropie the usbromservice keeps failing. I tihnk dis might be because i havent been able to format my usb as fat32. I did make sure the service was enabled btw
If you have two Retro pi arcades and One does not have games on it can I just put my usb in one and then put the usb in the new retro pi and will the games be on my new retro pi
Thanks for the tutorial ETA Prime! As always tremendously helpful. Just having a slight issue as the RetroPie menu item is now missing so I can't access any settings etc. I can see all my emulators and access the roms, just not the RetroPie menu. Any idea how I can get it back?
I have the files set up and all the games go onto my retro and i can play them while the usb is plugged in, but for some reason they won't write to the retropie. Is this suppose to happen automatically?
I have an Asus ChromeBox 2. I upgraded the ssd to 128gb and 16gb of ram. Installed Ubuntu and Retropie/EmulationStation. My problem is I am running out of storage space. Is there a way to do this on Linux? I want to transfer all of my roms to an external.

hi i have a 2tb external drive set up for my pie with just about all emulators i can think of...problem is it takes like a half hour just to load into emulation station....any way to speed it up... im using a pi 3b+
Thanks! I managed to get my usb hard drive to work. I also found out for the portable hard drives you need a y usb cable to supply power to it. I simply have it hooked to my laptop for power. Works great.
When I start the pi, I get the Retropie start screen and the when it goes to access the hard drive I get a blank screen. I can see the red and green lights flashing on the pi and the hard drive, but no image, just a blank screen. Any ideas or suggestions??

Can it rum roms off of multiple locations? IE. NES off the SD and PSX off the USB?

so if i delete the games of the usb drive will it delete from retropie as well or will it be kept on the system

The games are inside SD card where? Do I just extract my ROMs there? Is there a special folder?
Do I have to turn off my whole raspberry p3 every time I pull out the USB stick or can I just unplug add roms and then plug back in while on ??
