You are a lifesaver. My plug was broken but I fixed it - until it broke again taking all pits from the board with it. Now it's up and working again. Many many thanks.
Great in depth tutorial, I’m trying to apply this to a mpk mini mk2 however, & I am a little lost. I’d love to see one of these videos for the mk2 in the future if you could! Thanks mate!
Hey man, just repaired my MPK mini that has been sitting in the closed with a broken USB port for years. I tried replacing the micro-USB port itself but got nowhere. I found your video and in 20 minutes I'm jamming with the keyboard again! Thanks man!
1000 times thanks good sir. It's a good thing I never threw it out. My akai mini usb port broke 2 years ago. I will get started on this tommorow and I'll let you know how it turned out.
Dude. I just picked one of these up on Craigslist for $35 with a busted USB connector. No idea if that's a good deal or not, but THANK YOU. I was searching for pinouts and schematics until I found this. You saved me hours of research and bumblefuckery. And probably a few dozen bucks. Never soldered before in my life, but now I have a working midi controller (and a little soldering experience). I ended up just doing strain relief around the screw post in the corner. Now just to figure out what the hell to do with it... Why did the solder melt so fast for you? Better iron? Better solder? Better hands? Magic?
Hey thanks! think I have a functional MIDI keyboard now! Only thing is that it took me days, to finally figure out how to solder on R1 and R2... you just did it in a second!!
Thanks! I did this yesterday! In my case, a couple pins in the connector were bent. Very helpful to have a picture pointing out where the connections lead to. I remembered to put the cable through the hole before soldering, but put it through the wrong way so ended up making a small cut in the plastic and putting it back in the right way. Used the two holes/vias under the USB connector and a piece of jumper wire for strain relief.
Thank you so much, I did the exact same thing for a usb powered speaker.. It's so much more convenient with the wire attached. Im gonna try it with my m-audio keyrig
Hi Ken I tried to fix my mpk mini and for some reason its not working. When I plug it in All the lights come on blink off the top left light blinks but instead of staying lit it turns off? Any idea what the problem is. I live in Sarasota, Fl
Could you unmount an Akai Mpk mini Mk2? It seems impossibile because of the sustain connector. I can't find a way to use the "tape hack" to increase the pads sensitivity. Thanks
any idea on how to fix the keys? sometimes i have the keys not playing anymore, i disassembled the keyboard and used the grphite trick but i can't get the keys in place anymore, i already dissasmbled mine a couple of time but i can't remember how i got it together the other times!
at first was not recognized by pc then i heard you say it can short if theres any tracers from the female usb connector so i scraped off the tracers but could i have scrapped too much?... :( , now im getting a error message from windows saying device malfunction
You'll have to verify continuity between the connector pinouts and the point on the circuit board. Usually there's a short, or an open, between the pin. If the connector broke loose, a trace may have pulled up and shorted. I may do a video on how to check continuity at a later date.
Hey there, it's long ago since you uploaded this video but I like to ask you something. First of all, thanks for the fix! It worked perfect for me. I like to mention, that you should have good soldering equipment to do this fix especially for data wires. But anyhow it is working! I need to get new screws for mine cause I simply bought it without, can you please tell me which screws I need for the whole akai??? I can't find any description on the web for it :(
I don't know where to get 'official' Akai screws, but I'm sure any hardware store has something close... they may not be black like the originals... if you still have one just show it to the guys at the store. Sorry I couldn't give a better answer. You could always just keep an eye out for someone throwing a keyboard out - they mostly use similar screws between brands and models. Even the screws from a computer keyboard look about the same.
@@keninorlando9 Hey there, thanks for your reply! Yeah it seems not to be so easy cause there are really small ones used. Unfortunately I don't have one over to buy the right ones. I simply don't wanna brake the plastic parts. Finally I know that all screws are same for the whole akai. So anyways, thanks a lot for your video and the fix! It's working perfectly for me!
Hello Ken, I just attempted the fix my MPK and my clumsy soldering skills failed me. I love your detailed repair vids and the fix seems great, but I had a lot of trouble when soldering the R1 and R2 connections. In fact, I heated off the R1 connection altogether. Is my MPK doomed for the dump, or is there a potential fix for this?
Wouter Van Beek My advice is to find someone with better soldering skills to do it. The components are quite small and some irons are too big and hot for this work. There's a chance you can salvage it.
i have the mini2 as well any info on it? i am lost totally different board r1 and r2 are no next to each other i cant find fb1 any help would be appreciated
Hey keninorlando, can I ask for a favor? I just damaged my board by missoldering the resistors R1 and R2, can I know what's the ohmic value of those resistors respectively? Thanks man.
I would like to repair one of these for my son but I get an error trying to connect to "corner store". Are these connectors still available from you or do you have a new address for your web shop?
Hi I am having a problem when I solder the wires on the board. After I soldered them I do not get the right flashing pattern when I plug in the USB. All the lights flash on the board and then 1 bright solid light with the others on the right hand side constantly blinking also. I assumed it was the data cable so I have soldered the in the exact spot shown in the diagram and I still do not get any different result. Please get back to me ASAP thank you.
Test communications with your computer. If you have that, then try sending over the factory defaults using Akai's software. If not, most likely you have an open, or short and need to remedy that. Then again, the board itself could be bad but I've only seen that once and that was when the previous owner damaged the board soldering on the regulator, which is not related to THIS repair at all.
Hi, I've had this exact MIDI for the past 5 months and it has worked fine until recently. About a week ago, I plugged it into my Macbook Pro and the lights did not turn on and no sound came out when I pressed the keys. It just completely stopped working. Do you know how to fix it?
Hello Ken, I really like your repair videos, they are very helpful but I have a question for you. My Akai MPK mini connector is broken but not completely (it works alright but if I move the cable just a bit, the connection is lost, it is really annoying). So I was thinking about doing this repair because it looks really simple but there is a problem because my connector is still solidly attached to the board. So what do you think, how should I remove my connector and not damage my board to preform this hard wire repair? Thank you. :)
+Blaka Blak Here's the thing... you have to have some decent soldering skills using wik, or a hot air gun, or other method. Since you're even asking I'll assume you're not so familiar with those techniques. It's easiest to take the 'solder blob' approach here - heat up the left and right mounts while applying liberal amounts of solder, and also on the electrical connections on the ends. Run the iron around the connector in an attempt to keep everything liquid while applying gentle pressure on the usb connector itself. The PACE company has some GREAT soldering videos on youtube - some directly address your issue. th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=pace+soldering And this one by Marc Siegel - around 29 minutes in: th-cam.com/video/M0wI-5YZQm4/w-d-xo.htmlm Hope this helps.
Blaka Blak Hi, can you please elaborate on what you did? My connector is also attached to the board, but it struggles to establish a solid USB connection. Did you just solder around the connector itself?
Well, Ken wrote exactly what you should do in the comment above, he even linked some helpful tutorial videos. I didnt want to screw up my MPK for good with my lame ass soldering skills so I gave it to my friend who is good at this stuff and has the right equipment to do it and I sent him link to this video, he did it it no time. I am not 100% sure how he removed the connector but I recall that he said something about using a hot air gun. Sorry that I couldnt really help but I can tell you for sure that if you dont have at least mediocre soldering skills, its definitely better idea to take it to someone who knows what hes doing and show him this video than leaving yourself with no controller.
I have been having an issue after doing this repair. I am not able to download/upload program changes from mkII editor, I assume this is because we are no longer getting our connection from the usb port but rather the circuit board itself. Granted, I can use the midi portion of the device but uploading firmware or using mkII editor either shows no connection or doesn't respond respectfully. Any insight would be much appreciated.
keninorlando9 Sorry one last question, would you happen to know the size of the case screws? The eBay buyer I bought this as-is unit from doesn't have them. Any help is greatly appreciated.
serpicoemcee The case screws are the same as the screws that hold the circuit board to the case ( once you open it you'll see them ). I don't know the exact size, but take one to the store - you'll find some in small hardware - or something close enough for rock and roll. I know the screws you use to attach a pick guard to a guitar are very close in size.

+Joakim E USB != MIDI.... +keninorlando9 Ah, I'm sorry I think that I formulated myself in a flawed way... I'm fully aware USB != MIDI. But I know that many hardwares seem to have a standard MIDI implementation (kind of) behind the USB abstraction. Would be super-nice to make the MPKmini have an old-school connectivity option. Hence I was asking about the connectors with another purpose than USB TX/RX, or if you somehow found old-school MIDI TX/RX. My thinking was to just add a couple of old-school DIN if there was a local MIDI-bus to connect them to.
+Joakim E I see what you're saying. Most Akai keyboards have actual MIDI so you're probably right. While I don't currently have one of these laying around, I might take a stab and checking that row of 4 through holes in a row ( where I mention mounting ground ). I know those are NOT the USB connection points, but I never thought to scope it for midi.. I would make sense that the functionality is present but not wired... but even if that IS the midi port it doesn't mean it's active. If I get another one I'll scope it - in the meanwhile I'm curious myself. Maybe someone else has gone fishing for the MIDI on one of these.
I just realized the whole USB connector on mine got pushed in and it looks like it destroyed a couple little resistors in front of it and theres no way im gonna be able to solder those little guys back on without hundreds/thousands in micro soldering equipment..
