  • Auburn gymnast Samantha Cerio suffered bilateral knee dislocations during a recent competition.
    In this video we'll review the biomechanics of landing and explain part of why this happened, plus we'll review the important nerves and blood vessels in the knee that us doctors worry about with a leg fracture or knee dislocation.
    No graphic content is shown in this video and i do not show the injury clip.

      @Uncle Jemima in case of no open fracture, stabilize the joint, check for pulse below the knee to see if there is an arterial injury as the doc says. If no pulse, emergency surgery at the hospital. If there is a pulse, there will be X-rays, imaging and then surgery to repair the tears in the knee ligaments that were hurt. This girl won't be able to stand on her feet for 1-2 months. Then slowly resume to normal function through therapy.
      newsflash, this girl is going to have pain in the knees for the rest of her life most likely.

      I too also once jacked up my patella due to the daily jumping warmups i used to do on a hard surface. Luckily I'm fully healed and can now run and jump like before. But now that I now how easy it is permanently damage your knees, I now only do jogging (on grass) and have stopped hipping and sprinting. Now seeing the video of this girl and seeing your comment on permanent injuries has reinforced my view points about knees.

    I'm still nursing a low impact unilateral patellar dislocation and given what little force it took for my kneecap to end up on the outside of my leg, I often wonder in amazement how gymnasts can get away with the countless short landings and twists without MORE incidences of injury to the knee (but them, athletes are far more fit that I am and have better muscle/tendon support). It really was an unfortunate accident for Samantha Cerio and I hope she recovers well from it.

    I was doing one-legged bulgarian squats and my knee cracked at some point when I was pushing upwards at the beginning of the movement. From what I remember, the leg went no straight upwards, but a bit inwards. After that I got some stiffness in the knee and no immediate pain or swelling. My orthopedist diagnosed me with a somewhat (not severe) capsule tear. She also said it takes 4-6 weeks to heal and you cannot do much about it. My question is - what is this capsule tear? I am not sure what can be damaged in the knee this way. Occasional pain that I have been experiencing in the last 2.5 weeks is on the medial front side, around the point where the tibia and the femur connect. I would appreciate any information. I’m not a gymnast so I do not understand why the black pad belongs on the floor. If a gymnast is training on flat floor and then has to land on a surface 4 inches higher than level ground during competition, it could have contributed to the hyper extended knee position. All those ligaments are in their tightest position in full knee extension. I would be interested to see if there is increased injury rates due to the pad vs no pad. Thanks for the video!

    • @officeaddict33
      @officeaddict33 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the same. The pad, in theory, could soften the landing but it could also throw off the timing by a second or two on the landing. The "feel" of a blind landing is very sensitive. I watched Sam in another video do this handspring pass with no problem at all, like she could do it in her sleep. Wonder if that pad affected her timing.

    • @TinyLexy
      @TinyLexy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My daughter is on a competitive gymnastics team and you are correct that pad vs no pad does indeed change the timing and the position you need to be in to land correctly and safely. With that said, it is almost guaranteed that different venues have different sports equipment. Your home gym that you train in will not have the same equipment and in the same condition as your competitive venues - it’s luck of the draw. Most competitive events allow practice passes so that you can get a feel for the equipment and the timing and it is something this gymnast was definitely aware of as she has been preforming for quite some time. Unfortunately it does help contribute to injuries like these. I personally feel like it should be standard equipment across the board, no matter the competitive venue. It would at least remove one factor for injury! Wishing her a speedy recovery, this is what I envision happening when my little girl is on the floor, shewwww.

It hurt when It happend but i was able to walk it off and stretch it. It got swollen but without any bruising the day after and its hard to bend fully. Its been 4/5 days now and I can walk on it more, its still swollen (no bruising still) but its still alil hard to fully bend. The front of my knee gets tight, the back of my knee and outside of my knee do also. Is this something serious (surgery needed) or will this eventually subside with more PT and RICE?

    I can't help but wonder what could be done to prevent these types of unfortunate injuries in future athletes. This some how seems to be preventable to me. Was she warmed up and moving? Is it possible to construct a safer landing area or is there a technique issue here from her training that built up layers of damage that subsequently led to this freak injury.... ?

      @@Jman3881_ this is a particularly funny way to answer a question in middle school - but from an adults perspective a total waste of time. Clearly it is a bad landing. How do you prevent an injury from a bad landing was my thought process however.

    • @Jman3881_
      @Jman3881_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard H it’s called not hyperextending your legs when landing. Obviously she landed wrong. It’s common sense. If you land badly, your body is going to hurt. You can’t prevent your body from breaking when you do something wrong.

    • @richardh6525

      @@Jman3881_ actually we have been finding ways to prevent these things from happening for several decades now. Thinking it's impossible to prevent injuries is exactly the kind of thought process that should be avoided.

      Richard H I mean if you watched the video you can clearly see when she lands her knees are stiff which causes all the force to impact that joint.

    Who else got excrutiating pain on the knees while watching this video?
    Also, do you have a video about theories on why do our body feel pain when watching someone getting injured i.e.videos? My body hurts too much when watching videos like these, and you co uld consider I'm "average" in health. Common back and knee pain from someone that does heavy work. But mostly relaxed.

    Hey Doc... I think you could have shown the film of the performance. Her routine shows the power and force her knees had to endure. For all the pain she endured it would be good to give the viewers an opportunity to see her skill.. and why her competitive fire contributed to this injury. Let sister shine a little bit

    So we should worry about the Blood supply and nerves more than the flashy names of the media (ACL, etc) for overall function after the injury. What about high function athletes? Will ligament damage lead to the possibility of reduced function for sports, or is it still only the nerve/blood supply we should be worried about?
